I really need a midi knob/fader controller. I bought a keystep and while it has an arpeggiator and a sequencer i never use, it does not have any mappable knobs at all. It has one lousy modulation slider. I think need some mappable knobs. I can't decide between the choices i have here though .

3. Buy another midi keyboard that has mappable controls, but is 32 keys, because of space.

Kazrog's True Iron, Analog Obsession and NoiseAsh have some VST plugs that find their way into my workflow, NoiseAsh's Pultec is incredible imho if you just want the ridiculous pleasing air boost thing. There are some amp and gear impulse responses out there that can be used and abused to add grit and 3D to a signal as well.

Do I just have brainrot or why can't I get started making music in Reaper? I used to make music in GarageBand when I was 12. I have used Reaper for years for random shit and learning how DAWs work, but I haven't actually managed to get up a basic setup of musical instrument plugins so that I could actually start making music.

A few years ago I installed free Kontakt Player but setting it up was so freaking convoluted with all the registrations and multi-track routing that I gave up. I've also tried TX16Wx sampler and downloading random sample packs off the internet, but browsing through sounds in file browser is clunky and pretty much doesn't even work in default state unless you know which of the 50 unlabeled buttons to press.

I like how Reaper is lightweight and has powerful features and I have quite bit or experience with it so I don't want to abadon it, but holy shit at this point I just need something user friendly that works out of the box with a reasonable collection of sounds, because my brainrot can't handle it otherwise. Be it plugins or DAW.

Why do a lot of modern DAWs have shitty external midi support like FL for example. I started using Cakewalk and it is great for me since it can do sysex and has proper midi which is really nice for programming synths or using romplers and its free on top of that.

it's cool and all, but the default interface is too compromised by the Touch UI and just sucks on anything productive (i.e., not any touch interface). It really needs a lot of work to compete on UI vs. Renoise or the new hardware trackers. Even something like the edit step: sunvox has +1/-1 hotkeys and a touch UI for 0..16 below the lock icon. Renoise has an equivalent mouse UI but also hotkeys to set a specific edit step. The m8 doesn't have edit steps at all but is fast enough to use that you don't mind. The polyend tracker has an edit step soft key and then you can +1/-1 the value with the jogwheel or use the grid to enter an exact value. Summary: the sunvox has the shittiest keyboard option and a tolerable mouse option. Renoise+polyend let you instantly switch between common edit steps. Result: the first fucking thing you do, lay down some basic drums (edit step 4, edit step 8, edit step 2), is frustrating on sunvox unless you're using an android and don't notice because everything's equally frustrating.

My only "goal" is just to make the music I want and not have to do anything else.
30% is probably overshooting it by a lot but a good chunk of the music I think about making is rock- I just can't justify the cost to benefit ratio with how much time it takes compared to working on other genres, especially since I regard it as more of a "side" goal rather than a serious pursuit.

I enjoy it but by about 12 seconds I feel it's getting stale by itself. I would insert a new part with a different field or a different melody over the muted do do do do bit for a while, and then after that melody concludes you can include the remaining seconds and riffs after 12 seconds as a refrain.

In the export audio window, there's a box that says "Resampling." By default, it's set to a conservatively low 32-point sinc.
The higher you set this value, the more accurately your waveforms will be rendered.

Can config random chance shit right from push. Can sequence notes on top pads and play on bottom pads. The fact that the pads can be split is amazing. I think the drums need to be louder, they're really quiet in the mix. So it just sounds like the synth is bouncing around with volume automation instead of being sidechained to the kick. Overall, it sounds like you have some interesting ideas to kick some songs off of. Like at 1:10, that whole jam just needs to be mixed better / flushed out and I could easily see it as some indie dev game music

A few thoughts, the drums are too muffled, like i know the style you're going for but that filter on the snare is too much. Lower the resonance a bit and maybe open it up a hair. The synth in the beginning is barely audible, I'd raise the gain a bit to bring it out more in the mix. The pads and bass at 0:27 are killer, its a wonderful soundscape you created - really feels like bougie lounge house music

composition aside, the first thing that jumped out was how overly bright and forward you left everything- the lacks any sense of depth because of it

for stuff like those little noise effects and sustained strings for example: if you shelved out the highs heavily, lowered the volume, and added a dash of reverb or echo you'd instantly have a sense of space in this track; the song is okay but if you applied that concept everywhere I think you'd have something a lot nicer

so I slice|slice|slice with simpler a lot- i've got a workflow that works around using it like that and it's great and all but obviously the lack of being able to scrub and stretch outside of those slices once printed is a huge drawback

my dream feature in ableton is something that functions exactly the same but then has an "apply to clip" function that would arrange the original audio into a new track with all automation and pitch information etc- huge bonus if it could be applied to audio that isn't the original or even the same length as well

i've used da vinci resolve lightly and there's like light and marker information that you can apply to other clips and t b h it's upsetting to see so many interesting concepts in video editing not being applied to audio :'(

Sunvox is pretty good, but is a little bit weird and lacks VST support... and I'm not entirely sure that it's open source, it might only have source released for old versions.
Renoise is the more practical alternative to it.

LMMS is the open source DAW that I've heard mentioned a few times here.
