Microsoft has made some terrible systems and Windows 7 wasn't terrible. XP was getting old and I heard that the 64bit XP wasn't as stable as 32bit. They re-did the UI to be more modern and released Vista but it was noticeably heavier than XP and people downgraded it to get their performance back. Vista also asked confirmation like 10 times when you tried doing anything, as an annoying security feature. When Windows 7 came out they had toned down the annoying confirmations and hardware had already gotten faster with more RAM, so it was pretty much perfect straight from the release. Every piece fell into place at that time and they released something that the world was ready for. After that they never got there again. 8 was horrible, 8.1 was still horrible with some fixes made from 8, 10 was spyware that they embraced instead of trying to hide it. Not to mention that after introducing tiles they never had one unified UI again, always old control panel and new tiles at the same time.

Too bad Microsoft didn't give Windows 7 out as FOSS system so the community could keep updating it. Now it's a security issue when holes aren't being fixed anymore. It's better to mimic the UI with Linux so that the system isn't compromised.
>>
I like the look of and feel of Windows 11. I dislike the new right click menu but meh I learned to live with it.
>>
>>85197699
if only there was actual good mimics of the OS on literally any platform, usually its still off in a way you can tell its a copy and not actually windows 7.

also, gui in general just needs to go back to 2010s gui already. modern ui is shit.
>>
>>85196583
I didn’t notice but I’m still using windows 7

You know a OS is good when you don’t notice you’re using it and everything just werks. Until I tried to be a coder and couldn’t install python, fucking piece of shit.
>>
>>85197794
as a fellow python dev, I upgraded from 7 to 11 yesterday and I am in the process of bringing my projects over to 3.10.1 etc. That being said, you couldn't do anything with 3d printers on Windows 7 outside of running cura and freecad or old autocad. I don't see the appeal of sticking with Windows 10 when 11 exists and you can literally make it faster than 10, turn off all the spyware in a much easier fashion, and it just works with my new hardware very nicely. I installed python, platformio, python, and I am now current python 3 woohoo! 11 feels a lot more like Windows than 8 and 10 ever did and I am glad for it.

>FOSS Windows 7
Problem is that knowing MS, I can guarantee they're still using large swathes of prior Windows operating systems in their most modern one. So there's a chance they'd end up with a bunch of zero days in Windows 10/11. I wish 7 had gone FOSS as well so we could make our own security patches and hardware drivers. Possibly even implement a home brew DirectX 12.

Reminder that extending Windows 7 and adding features like DirectX is entirely possible right now, even if Win7 is not open source.
It's trivial to get apps that don't work on Win7 to work on Win7 (with the exception of games, which usually require DX12 which is more difficult)

Dude, you can download vkd3d, or the Microsoft dx12 runtime for win7 and get stuff like resident evil village (which is a DX12 game) to run on win7.
The thing I'm saying is, I personally don't have enough skills to implement dx12 on win7. But I have gotten a couple of win10-only apps to run on win7 no problem. And I had literally no experience programming on windows until a couple days after christmas last year.

plug in 2 of them and then you get 16 in addition to the 4-8 available on the motherboard, and you are then going to run out of space inside your pc

>>
>>85214683
won't a pci-e x1 (3.0) be overloaded if lots of drives work simultaneously?
>>
>>85214716
pcie 3.0 has 1000 MB/s per lane, which means that if all 8 hard drives are transferring at 110 mb/s, the connection will be saturated.
Most normal hard drives only go up to about 80 or 100 anyway, so it will be basically fine. If you are using special snowflake high RPM drives then maybe you will need to get a faster card.
If you are conecting a bunch of SATA SSDs at 600MB/s each, then you will need to buy a faster and more expensive card. 8x600 = 4800 MB/s which means you will need an 8 lane PCIe card if you are connecting all SATA SSDs.

I migrated from Windows 7 to Mint two months ago. One thing that annoyed me about it was how much space it took up on a 120GB ssd. The C:\Windows folder got huge and I had to go out of your way to run Disk Cleanup every so often to clear 30+ gb's of accumulated temp files. In hindsight, there is probably a way to script W7 to automatically do that, but the /tmp/ directory on Mint has opened my mind to a self-flushing temp folder.

Win7 will never be surpassed, is very usable to this day, and looks much nicer than any newer version of windows. However, AME10 was sent down from heaven for those of us who needed win10 for the one fucking app that requires it.

You will never be a Windows 7. You look disgusting, no wonder people despise your flat, boring, disorganised mess. You put on makeup through the use of shitty forced blur, thinking that's what people liked about Windows 7, you tried reattaching a "Start menu" which you removed, feeling guilty for what you've done, but people still hate you. You have no Aero, and you will never have Aero, you will always look like a hideous abomination of legacy code and webshit, on top of lazy, uninspired, copied design.

>what baseless claims? i said os i use weighs half of stock win7 (it's a fact)
The ISO size, sure..... But upon boot Windows 7 has 25-35 processes while Windows 10 21H2 has 117. Even a super stripped build can only get so far down, such as my pic related (start menu or other UWP is disabled too). A stripped Windows 7 build can go down to 17.
>and runs faster (also a fact).
Basic Windows tasks feel far snappier on Windows 7 but technically yes, newer applications will run faster on 10.

I'm not afraid of malware, I'm running an un-updated Windows 7. The point is that downloading a random ISO is retarded beyond belief.

that's what OP said and to which i replied that striped 10 is better. then i pointed out why i like modded 10 better. it is after all a subjective opinion, not an objective fact cause everyone judges by his own criteria. if that's too hard to understand then im afraid we won't see eye to eye. ever. also i was comparing striped 10 to stock 7, of course striped 7 will be lighter so thanks for that captain obvious. also you keep coming back to me downloading "random" mod of win10. i see my fault here so let me extrapolate. i said it takes 3 minutes to find and download mod. that's because i spent days beforehand trying out releases of different modding groups before settling for one. so yes, downloading random iso IS retarded, but also NOT what i do. still waiting for an explanation on how me using modded10 has anything to do with os being locked down. asked about it few times already and im honestly curious.
>>
>>85231607
That's true, but the problem is, POSReady 7 comes with *asterisks. Don't recommend it blindly, it lacks some features like Aero thumbnails, sticky notes, windows media center, and wifi support has to be manually installed. Unless the 2023-2024 extended updates actually contain something really important there is not much merit in using it over Enterprise.
That being said, some people might not care about any of that. It depends on the use case.

Uh if your not into the latest games why even bother to upgrade? Windows 7 64bit can take 192GB of ram you know.. Office is office. Go with the lowest version that has everything you need (2007 ver for ex; new office formats plus save as .pdf feature). Adobe is adobe; .pdf is pdf and photoshop is still photoshop. Blunt terms; if it works don't fuck with it. Keep spare parts in a closet and roll on. ATX and SATA ain't going anywhere so your in great shape. Your PSU blows; newegg will fix you up. Your SSD shits, again newegg will fix it. Everything else; well pull out your spares.

Windows 7 was the best OS to just install and start using, not much setup needed, mostly sane settings OOB, while I can get Windows 10 or Linux to the same level of productivity and I need to now as Windows 7 is too old for me now and doesn't run properly on my Hardware, but every other OS needs more configuration and more tinkering. For Windows 10/11 and Linux are similar on terms of productivity and configuration needed, equal amounts of fuckups and breaking stuff. Windows 7 is the GOAT, but even the greatest gets old and dies.
