FAQs:
> Which version should I download?
> How can I activate LTSC?
> What does it have?
> Where can I download LTSC 2019?
> What software do you recommend/should I install?

See /fwt/ paste.

> Can I change to LTSC 2019 without reinstall?
If you are running LTSC. Otherwise, it must be a clean install.

> Can I change to Enterprise or Education without reinstall?
Yes, with a generic volume key of those versions. See /fwt/ paste.

> I already run Windows 7, but don't want to clean install?
The installers (except LTSC) can upgrade.

Is there a problem with keeping a Linux installation on one hard drive and a Windows installation on another? Some guy in a chatroom told me that this would cause problems without elaboration. The only problems I've noticed in Windows are an increased bootup time and a desynched clock.
>>
>>84468329
>an increased bootup time
Because the bootloader searches for other operating systems. I dunno if you can tell Windows not to search for operating systems on other drives, but it's worth a try.

>a desynched clock
Windows stores the local time in the BIOS, Linux stores UTC. You can use
timedatectl set-local-rtc 1

to tell Linux to interpret the time as local time.

My work's 4th gen i7 and sata ssd boots windows 8.1 faster than my 10th gen i7 with nvme ssd with win 10 ltsc.

Its not big difference (like 8 secs vs 16) ,but its noticeable. The part that takes longer isnt the desktop load, but the windows preboot. Both are MBR. How can I improve it?
>>
>>84468558
>Select different sources for different programs.
I don't want that. I want to be able to output audio into two different sources simultaneously. In other words: same program into two separate DACs.
>>
>>84468626
It gets 100% worse >Its not big difference
What kind of irony is that and it can have multiple reasons, but do you have the same power settings in both? Especially the one for shutdown, I don't exactly know how it is named, but in the same menu where you change the power button behavior you can change the quick start stuff and if you have it disabled like me the boot times are worse, but it has other benefits.

My 10th gen i7 is so much faster while waking from sleep compered to my 8th gen i5 it is not funny anymore.
>>
>>84468645
I see, that's slightly different than what I understood. Windows is very hacky so you should use virtual patch cables, create two of them, assign each to two different devices BUT feed the virtual cables one audio source. Does it make sense? No?

How do I scrub files like pngs, jpgs, webms, and pdfs of any data that could identify me? I'm talking about "cleaning" a file of any identifiable information going beyond "metadata."

I want to make some reaction images because my new schedule has given me more free time, and I am just paranoid about my data.

I've been pressing F10 at bootup and manually selecting which drive I wanna boot from. You mean I can just boot from my Linux drive with Grub and it'll give me an option for Windows?
>>
>>84468894
Yes. Grub is the screen that gives options like booting into the backup initram fs and "recovery options" version of linux. It also lists every os that "os-probe" detects. I install linux from a base iso, meaning no gui so I just add these while installing linux and linux-firmware, assuming I'm gonna need them of course.
>>

>You mean I can just boot from my Linux drive with Grub and it'll give me an option for Windows?
Yes. Windows doesn't support booting Linux, but Linux supports booting Windows (so-called chainloader).

Driver updates tend to be kinda conservative for very obvious reasons. Check gpedit and see if you have "Do not include drivers with Windows Updates" set. It's up to you whether to use that policy but you generally need it for kiosks.

you probably deleted the disk with your bootsector, bootloader, or boot manager on it. those are all fixable even if you do accidentally fuck it up.

if it's just data files, and that's the only partition on that disk and nothing shows up in diskpart, you should be fine, but make sure your active bcd isn't on there i guess.

>windows can't chainload
This is, of course, maliciously false: the Windows bootloader has supported loading alternative boot sectors for as long as it's been an OS - so for the NT line, since NT 3.1 in 1993, and the DOS-based line, since Windows 95. And of course, it's supported chainloading EFI bootloaders since the very first versions that supported EFI firmware (Windows 2000-ish).
In fact, it solves a lot of issues dual booting with Linux to chainload Grub from BOOTMGR (and not the other way around), which centre on Grub and libntfs being extremely poor at spotting hibernated Windows (simply no support in the former, and actual bugs in the latter), mounting dirty filesystems, and trashing them.
It's why a common recommendation when setting up a dual boot with Linux is to disable hibernation and fast boot (which is a type of hibernation internally). Not a problem though if you use a boot loader that actually understands Windows hibernation (read: not Grub) first.

For example, despite MEMTEST being an EFI app, it - to my recollection - can't be directly loaded from UEFI: BOOTMGR must be leaving some stuff in memory for it to use.

Having said that, I haven't played with UEFI in years, could be completely wrong, and can't be assed rekerjiggering any of my computers to test it out, since all of them BIOS/CSM boot.

Now that I have your attention: has anyone, and is there even a way to, audit it and know what it's actually doing under the hood?
There seems to be some C# code in there but then it goes straight to a binary blob

Because Windows has things like "backward compatibility", we don't need to compile everything for our machines. If you're paranoid enough (which you are) and competent enough (which you almost certainly aren't), review the code and compile the SppExtComObjHook library, available from https://codepen.io/abbodi1406/full/LYpdMKq and was the second hit when I googled for it.

>>
>>84479236
How can it not support 21H2? It's literally the same OS as 21H1, 20H2, and 2004 for fuck's sake. Saying it doesn't support it is like saying something supports Windows 7, but not 7 SP1 - in fact, more like Windows 98 supports something, but not 98SE, because these "enablement package" updates change a hell of a lot less than an old-school service back.

so, in the case that something goes wrong you get fucked and cannot report anything because it clearly states that it is just supported to 2009. Even custom themes specify which versions they support because many things change between versions that no one notices. Windows10 changes many things underneath without your consent, if it was that easy no developers would bother writing which versions support their software.

Is there an easy way to update ffmpeg in Windows, like in cmd, e.g.

As in, how does one create and host a website similar to 4chan? There's a lot to it, and it doesn't really have anything to do with Windows. You'd need to write the front-end and back-end of the website, set up a database and http on the server, and set up and maintain the server itself, which is typically a Linux install.

I never said that. What I said was that the kernel is a PE32/32+ image that requires a loader to understand PE32/32+, which the kernel also needs to do in order to launch other programs, and that this seems to be a little redundant.

oh i see
eh, i doubt the code to do it is significant at all next to the rest of the code in their bootloader
this isn't the days of 512 byte boot sectors after all, it's probably just that it's easier to copy/paste the same executable loader into both
even with linux the kernel image is a complex image format and is even typically compressed, too

Fucking name decorations (C, Windows, x86).
I want to inject a process with two custom DLLs; the first is the DLL being loaded by the process (WRAPPER.dll), the second is loaded as an import of the first (BASE.dll). BASE.dll has shit in it that I need for other shit and is not supposed to have a DEF file, whereas WRAPPER.dll is just a wrapper with a bunch of ordinal exports and a DllMain. BASE.dll exports a bunch of functions; predominantly cdecl, but the ones being used by WRAPPER.dll need to be stdcall; using stdcall means that my export names are being mangled:

>[BASE.dll]
>[ 22] _XYZ@12

WRAPPER.dll has a DEF file in which I use unmangled names (because of course I do). Since it can't find those unmangled names it throws a hissy fit with loaded:

>[WRAPPER.dll]
>[ 0] +base[ 1] 3fb2 Forwarder RVA -- base.XYZ #Not base._XYZ@12

>The ordinal 1 could not be located in the dynamic link library.
Again, adding a DEF file for BASE.dll is NOT an option. extern "C" wouldn't do anything since I'm already writing in C. How do I prevent the compiler from mangling my names in BASE.dll?

it sends an id of your mobo/cpu to microsoft to give a permanent license to that hardware. even if you reinstall windows it will still auto activate as long as you install the same edition. its basically a legitimate license once activated.

- this requires a windows 10 1903 or higher host AND guest, so you can't do this with a windows 7 guest as he wants, since it's a paravirtualization technique which requires guest kernel support
- performance is a mixed bag

still pretty cool, but won't cover the original guys' use case

So I recently upgraded my pc and I plan to give my old pc to my dad but should I install Win 10 on it or just go with Win 7?

Would Win 10 run slow on older hardware?

These are the spec of my old pc:

i7-920 Processor
12gb ram
GTX 1050
and SSD hard drive.

Actually it's not "arcane"; MS just *really* fell into the GUID hole. COM interfaces are identified by GUIDs, GPT partitions are identified by GUIDs, applications - you guessed it - GUIDs ... give a man a 128-bit number, and all of a sudden he assumes there will be no collisions.

My internet connection keeps dropping when connected via ethernet. I am using Windows 10. Here's what I've tried so far:
>Switched ethernet cables
No improvement
>Tried using the same ethernet connection on my W10 laptop
It works perfectly on my laptop so issues with cables, router, ISP are ruled out I suppose?
>"Reset Network Settings" in Windows
No improvement
>Disabled Windows Defender for a while
No improvement

What should I do next? I suppose it could be an issue with any of the following:
>Hardware issue with PC e.g. motherboard or ethernet ports
>Issues with drivers for network connections.Do ethernet connections involve drivers?
>Something else I haven't considered.

Any help would be appreciated.

Does anyone know of a solution to windows 10 recording a shit ton of "WHEA error 17" messages in event viewer? I am fairly confident the root of the issue is some kind of bad driver but nothing I've looked up and tried has resolved it. I don't even think it's impacting performance but I just don't like the idea of some silent error occuring thousands of times per day and "resolving" ad infinitum

How can I install the windows store calculator? I'm using LTSC.
>>
Stupid question but whatever: I know that back in the days, changing motherboards/changing chipset meant doing a mandatory new Windows installation. Is it still true with Win10?
>>
>>84495510
nono you just update drivers

>>84495007
win 10 solely because of task manager being better. also looks a bit better.

agreed, is the cleanest out there

>>84495220
that is very odd. check your router?

Should i install win10 ltsc 21h2 instead of the normal consumer edition pro version?

Is it eating less ram? My pro version is using 1,7gb after startup. Any other advantages?
>>
>>84495927
Ram usage is not a viable means of testing OS performance. The OS intentionally uses more than the minimum it could get away with. It makes decisions on what side shit to load based on how much you have left. Unused ram is wasted ram.

Most people should use pro or education.

I thought I could rule out router trouble because it worked on my laptop plugged into the same ethernet cable,

>WHEA
>which stands for Windows Hardware Error Architecture
Now you know what to look at.

It never meant a mandatory new Windows install - it's just that Windows turned off all mass storage drivers except the one you were using on first boot. If you turned them back on, you could move a Windows 2000 install from machine to machine without problems - and I did this regularly, making me smarter than everyone else.

Microsoft, recognising that not everyone is as smart as me, removed this "optimization" in Windows 8, and it now fires up every mass storage driver it can find in the hope at least one will do the job - thus solving the problem.

running the dev builds, haven't had issues as my daily driver. I have run thisiswin11 to debloat it a bit though.

>Unused ram is wasted ram.
That's not entirely true. If your working set is too big to fit in your CPU cache your processor will mostly spin idly whilst waiting for the data to arrive on the bus. The more memory that can be reused, the better.
