Temperature, power delivery available, load.

The higher your temperatures the lower it will boost. If your VRMs are trash it won't boost as high to prevent your motherboard from catching on fire. If the load isn't enough then it won't turbo fully to save power and reduce heat.

no benefit at all, IF should be synced to RAM unless your RAM is fast enough to outweigh the latency penalty of an unsynced IF

>>
>>84465677
You want your IF 1:1 with your ram frequency to avoid latency penalty. So if you got 3200mhz ram then 1600mhz IF is fine. The benefit is better performance since your cores talk to each other faster and of course your ram is faster too from higher bandwidth or lower latency.

I have parts from an unbuilt build from years ago, a 8700k and a GTX 1070 Should i just build it or should I try to sell the CPU and Mobo and switch those out?

I know the GPU is more likely to bottleneck me then the CPU but obviously the GPU market is fucked right now and switching a GPU out is simpler then replacing a mobo/cpu on an already running machine. For reference, my goals with this is to use it for gaming for the forseeable future. I'm fine with 1080p/60fps, tho I wanna run AAA games on ultra/with raytracing once I can get a better GPU

Oh, actually, also: Do I really need a M.2/NVMe SSD? I have a bunch of normal ass SSD's from 3-4 years ago I was gonna use for the OS drive and for games, and then a bunch of 1.5tb HDD's I was gonna use for general movie, document, manga, etc storage
>>
My 750w psu has started to have coil whine or other type of non fan related whine today, I think it's like at least 9 years old. It's high pitched enough that it's starting to annoy me. Going to get a replacement soon, I don't care if it's modular or whatever but a good option seems like a Corsair RM750, the one that has the whine is a Corsair TX750. I'm probably just going to connect all the modular cables to it even the ones I don't use because it would suck to lose them or forget where I stored them. The only thing I really care about is price and longevity.
>>
>>84466223
given than the 1070 is obviously not LHR, you may be able to sell it for enough to buy a more modern LHR card.

Best non curved 1440p monitor for ~$550?
Uses are pretty much everything except for vid/pic editing
Don't play shooters but I play rocket league/mmos
Only real requirement is high pixel density for sharp pic/text since my eyes are kinda bad
Good contrast and low response time would be good too.
pic related are my specs if needed

>>84466613
I'm not really great on gpu knowledge, but 2070 will enable more 4k stuff while 2060 is just for 1080pp from what I have read and what is in OP. If the difference between the two is around $100, or maybe $150 at the most, then probably the 2070. Assuming this is starting at retail price from an actual store and not some used miner card.

I keep getting blue screens every couple of days, and I have no idea why. I assume it's either the RAM or PSU. The PSU is a silver rated 450w EVGA one, and the RAM is 2 sticks of 8 Gb G.Skill Ripjaws. Alternatively it could be the Assrock b450 motherboard, but my temperatures never get hot, and I never abuse the computer, so I'm not sure why exactly the motherboard would crap out on me now of all times.

What's the best way to test each individual component to try and find the cause of the blue screens? I think I fucked around with the RAM voltage a while back because the stock speed it ran at was 2100 Mhz, and I wanted it to run at the advertised 3200 Mhz.

my screen just blacked out while I wasn't even running anything intensive yesterday and the GPU won't display anymore so I took it out and use the iGPU for now. But I tested it a bit and when I turn it on, the BIOS still gives the ok beep and a few seconds later I can still hear the window startup sound. I also made the iGPU the top priority and ran it while the GPU is installed and speccy still detects it and I even managed to uninstall and reinstall the drivers.
Only thing I haven't tested are the other ports because I only have HDMI right now.
Are there any kinds of major GPU errors/failures that are like this or is it just the HDMI port that's broken?

Besides not using absolute bottom tier mobo with almost no vrms and no vrm heatsink, the only other factor here affecting you besides temp could be that you have a ryzen 3600 from the 2019 batch. The ones from 2020 onwards have higher stable oc and lower voltage required for said oc

If you're not hurting for capacity then a 2 TB M.2 is probably fine and good value compared to their SATA counterparts. Gen 4 seems pretty unnecessary to me though. I'd probably go 980/970/Evo/Plus if it were my money.

>I meant manual irl OCing
So did I. I upgraded from my 980ti which I manually OCed for 6 straight years only because it was time to upgrade, not due to any failures or even performance depreciation
>>
is it worth upgrading from a 6700k yet?
>>
>>84468313
You can't brick cards with manual OC. Nvidia and AMD don't let you go past unsafe voltages unless you go out of your way to modify your bios.
>>
>>84468344
6 years from now it will be useless anyway. You will be able to get something that matches its performance and consumes a fraction of its power, for a lot less money.

No
>>
>>84468544
Yes but there's some catch about the ranks/channels. Iirc there's a gamernexus video about this. The gains are about 5%
>>
>>84468716
all OC editions are placebos as in they're always meant to run at that power degree but the card comes intentionally gimped by something like 3% so you cna clock "oc" on their shitty software and "unlock it's true power"
actual OCing means going beyond whatever the manufacturer specifies with third party tools like MSI Afterburner or directly on your UEFI/BIOS.
>>
>>84468785
I know, that's where I'm getting the info from. But that video was a while back, and I wasn't sure if it was still correct/relevant.

>>
>>84468648
+200mhz with +1CL doesn't make much difference. You might be able to get the old ram to reach 3200/16 with manual settings anyway.

>>84468544
What matters is having at least 4 total ranks. 4 sticks are guaranteed to have that, but 2 sticks could have either 1 or 2 ranks per stick. 8gb sticks are basically always 1 each and 32gb 2 each, but 16gb sticks vary and manufacturers don't often label them with this info. Additional ranks beyond 4 are redundant on consumer motherboards.

Reposting. Left is what I currently have and right it what I'm considering. So I'm keeping things like the ram, the PSU, GPU, etc.

I'm undecided between a 5600x and a 5800x and I really have no idea what I'm doing with my mobo.
What mobo would be best to pair with either of these CPUs? I'm mostly looking to emulate and play at 1080p and am pretty clueless on how much motherboard actually matters.
>>
>>84468539
Fast game loading times are one the of the big benefits of SSDs. For some games it might not matter, but I'd put anything loading-sensitive on the SSD. Put a heatsink on if you're worried about temps. Your 1tb will be replaced by a bigger drive before longevity comes into play if the workload is gaming.

>>
>>84468927
first of all, get an nvme ssd. doesn't have to be a top of the line pcie gen4 model. look at something like the kingston a2000 or perhaps the samsung 970 evo (non plus).
the form factor is better and they are noticeably faster than sata drives.

second, what are your use cases? for gaming/browsing/shitposting/torrenting, you will be fine with just 6 cores. if the 5800x is within 50 shekels or so, just get it. otherwise, 5600x is fine.

as for the mobo, the mobo quality level will matter if you want to overclock high end chips (the vrm quality and cooling will affect results and longevity). so if you were planning on a 5900x and wanted to overclock, i'd definitely recommend a more expensive model. the one you have will prolly be fine for a 5600x.
and the mobo type (b550 vs x570) will matter for the amount of devices you want to connect. x570 gives you more pcie lanes, so if you plan to use more than 1 gpu or more than 1 nvme ssd, x570 is the way to go. for a basic bitch setup, b550 is fine

How hard is it to take off the "armor" on modern mobos? I want to replace it with either something like my 07 box had in pic rel or if I can't manage that I'll buy those little heat sinks you stick on GPU memory dies. Is that do able?
I hate the way my computer looks. It's got all new parts and everything but I just hate it. I didn't specifically pick even one thing to have RGB intentionally yet I ended up with 6 argb fans, a motherboard with two or three separate controllable leds, my GPU has three rgb leds. My case has two built into it. Waterblock...
but whats bothering me the most is that the motherboard that cost me nearly $300(barely works btw) for alder lake has worse VRM cooling than the board in my ati 4850 box. My 12700k is lapped and pushed to the absolute max so I'm sure the power delivery could use the help.
I wanna make the whole system look cool in my book but this fucking garbage gigabyte mobo comes first. Then I'll look into removing the shroud and back plate from my GPU and putting on my own active back plate and fans and replacing the aio with a open loop with clear tubes and the system fans.

Kek'd hard Anon.

My Goto was the Enermax Saberay and it had long ass RGB strips along the front and top, the last time I bought the adv instead of the normal version, it would lit up an entire room with RGB so much, the local LGBT community tried to claim the girls room to be their headquarters.
I thought something like the Saberay, the O11 is almost entirely a Glass-Box and I won't go water cooling with this thing. So the Fans, Mainboard and RAM would be the "only" RGB in this build ... kinda feels like pic related when coming from that.

I need something gayer.

yea, kinda, its rendering 2 screens and in vr you really want your fps to stay high for nausea/motion sickness reasons.

i would bet serious money that gpu prices will by much better 12 months from now. not to mention that new gen gpus will have been released
if anything, you should buy the other components now and hold off on the gpu purchase.

>gaming pc running all currently released and soon to be release games on ultra, how much should i be looking at?
depends on target resolution, but mostly roughly the same.
for non-VR usage, i'd still suggest a 3080 if you want 4k at all, even for just 1440p ultra
a 3060ti or 3070 will be competent at 1440p but will kinda choke on the heavier titles, cyberpunk etc

You could store a GPU for as long as you want provided you test it before the warranty runs out, but it would be foolish in this market because GPU prices are insanely high right now and a new generation will come out in a year. It would be profitable to sell it now and buy back in a year.

>A 212 evo should be more than enough for his 5800
lol, no, the 5800x is notoriously hot-running
not because of efficiency, the total watts are low, but because of heat density (all the watts are coming from the tiny ccd)

also, imo you should always get top of the line cooling.
even if you don't *need* it to get the best perf your chip can give, its nice to have a quieter system.
and the price diff between a decent cooler and a top of the line one is like 50 bucks, so why not.
compared to the rest of the build, the extra cost is a rounding error

You can use Freesync on Nvidia but only on GTX 1000 series or better. If you have something like a 970 you can't use freesync, you need a gsync monitor for the same effect.

yea, your system is old, even a budget new system (see below) will really outperform the fuck out of it
for gaming, your average fps will probably not change much, but your stutterings/1% lows should improve perceptibly and the overall experience in other programs will be much snappier

basic bitch budget gaming system:
11400(f) and b560 mobo (check prices/deals, it may be worth it to go for a 11600 (non-k) or even a 5600x/b550 if they are close enough in price)
16gb decent ram, 3600mhz cl16
decent cpu cooler (im a fan of getting top of the line always, for the extra quiet)
1tb gen3 nvme

i'm thinking of upgrading from a NH-U9S for cooling my 12700k. My main issue isn't actually with it being an alder lake board, it's the extreme limited compatibility of my Gigashite ITX mobo due to it's weird chunky M.2 heatsink (aorus ultra z690i ddr4). The only other noctua that'll fit it is the NH-C14S which apparently is a stronger unit but it's oriented horizontally rather than vertically. my case is a fractal node 304 so the mobo is sitting flat parallel to the bottom of the case. I don't see why it should be a problem but is there some reason why it wouldn't work or not be effective?

I built my first PC about a week and somehow it works but I'm having trouble with of all things one of the case fans. For some reason whenever I boot up the PC (from shut off or sleep) it will randomly be really damn loud and make a buzzing sound constantly while it spins.

I don't know a real fix other than turn the PC off and fuck with the fan. Wiggle it around in its fixture, pull it then press it hard into its fixture. For some reason this tends to work and its silent on next bootup and stays silent as long as I leave the PC on but when I startup again the buzzing will often return. Anyone know what might actually be causing this and a permanent fix?

Pretty good, but you don't want the 5700G for an HTPC, it's overkill. Even if you wanted to use it for emulation on the big screen, a 5600G will serve you well and it'll be a hundred bucks cheaper. The iGPU performance difference is negligible too, somewhere around 5%. It plays back 4k60 HDR vids on YouTube no problem, but I hear that it does not have HDCP 2.2 and PlayReady 3.0, which are needed for 4k UHD bluray playback and Netflix in 4k, if those things matter to you. It also doesn't have AV1 hardware decode, which is expected to be a big thing, starting in a few years. If you're mostly looking a media playback box then there is no need for you to go too far, and you can even just buy a cheap little Athlon and a 1 liter plastic slab and call it a day.

but it comes with adequate and good fans, has exceptional build quality and features and generally doesn't drop the ball in any major way.
considering how long you can keep it for, imo its excellent value for the discerning, heterosexual white man.

is a Ryzen 7 5700U the same as 5700G (laptop)
>>
>>84473313
No. The U is meant for laptops while the G is the desktop variant with higher clocks and video capabilities
>>
>>84473335
what about the U and H?
so I could potentially be better off with a mini pc with a XXXXG cpu

I've heard Asrock isn't reliable, but on the flipside, I have to wonder how many people are pushing them to their limit. I'm sure if you do that they crap out early, but I wonder how long they last if you don't.

Not him, but I hate having the usb ports on the top. Dust will fall into them.

Gracias. I've looked through the two links in the op but couldn't see something for 12th gen.
>>
>>84473502
Yeah those links are only for AM4 or 10/11th gen intel. Options for alder lake are limited, even for DDR4. just browse pcpartpicker to see what there is.

computer intensive interest include starcraft and machine learning (programming in general, including backtesting, but it's usually not computationally expensive - openGL can be a little bit, but it's nbd). I'm wondering at what point I should upgrade from the shitty desktop I already have.

The ASUS ROG Strix Z690-G looks nice, but the ddr5 ram looks more expensive. But if that's whats going to be made going forward I guess I'll look towards this one.
>>
MSI GeForce RTX 3060 VENTUS 2X 12G OC LHR
Would this be a decent upgrade that will last me fore some years? Have a 970 right now that isn't feeling that well
>>
>>84473672
It's too soon to get into DDR5 unless you have the means to throw thousands of dollars away and not flinch
>>
>>84473681
ah you're right for some reason google was showing ddr4 ram when I searched for ddr5. Yeah ddr4 then.
