Should I upgrade my gpu or cpu first? Currently running a i5 3570k with a 1050 2gb. My ti died a year ago and I had that one as a back up in my aunt's pc.

I am thinking of going wither 3600 or 10400f but I heard the b550 chip has USB port issues.

about to buy me a LG 27GL850-B as my main monitor and maybe a ViewSonic XG2405 as a second monitor. any reason why I shouldn't go with either of these?
>"why are you mixing 1440p and 1080p?"
cuz budget reason, plus im pretty much just testing out 1440p so not sure if ill actually like it or not. plus I'd like something smaller as the second monitor
>>
I snagged one of the 6600's from the shuffle today. Not what I really wanted but considering I'm upgrading from a fucking 680 and paid "only" 400 I'm happy enough. Have had incredibly shit luck finding cards. Even though it's clearly the weakest card of this generation it's a nuclear reactor for most games I care about but now I can play new stuff too now I guess. What do you all think these will sell for in 3-6 months if I can ever get a non scalped to the goddamn moon 3080 or 6800XT (maybe I'll wait til next gen to try for a high end card)? Looking at prices for current cards, it appears I could use it to game for a while and still come out ahead if current conditions hold and it sadly looks like there's no end in sight for that. I can't know if all these listings are actually selling without watching it further but given what I hear I would be surprised if they weren't.
>>
>>83823192
newegg shuffle?
>>
>>83823192

I kind of regret not getting in on that, looked like they were selling at or close to MSRP. I've been trying to find a 6900XT or 6800XT at a fair price, but with little luck. I'm still running an ancient HD7970 that seems to be dieing, I think using a heat gun on it to reflow the BGA solder might help, but I don't want to try that until I get a GPU to replace it.
>>
so how do newegg shuffle wrok? I know its a lottery but what, only like one lucky customers gets to buy them or a select 100 or something

I bought a "cheap" gaming monitor a few months back and I like it. 144Hz, IPS has a bunch of bells and whistles.. but the IPS glow is horrendous. Black looks silvery and it starts to shift as soon as I move slightly off center. Is there anything I can do settings-wise to mitigate this or should I just be looking for a new monitor? For reference the monitor is Asus VG249Q

my advice is to stay away from
-nanoIPS, due to shitty contrast (compared to other IPS)
-very wide gamus (very rare to have proper sRGB clamp, so everything looks super saturated)
-"HDR" monitors (only OLED and miniLED are real HDR, everything else is just marketing)

look at the benq ex2780q and the gigabyte g27q (not the g27qc, the qc is a VA panel)
try to stay with cheap panels.
also i would suggest 4k/60 for the second monitor, with scaling it will make text look awesome, see picrel

It's not particularly important you put it back unless you move your computer regularly: your GPU may get loose without it, maybe.

How long are they supposed to last?
I bought a corsair h200i a few years back for an excessive build I made. After a few months there was a chirping coming from the unit. I suppose it was air bubbles? Either way, switched to a HSF instead but I'm tempted to try out the NZXT Z73.

your r5 1600 may bottleneck that GPU but, yes it'll be a huge upgrade for any GPU bound workload.
your board also supports the 3000 series AMD cpus so that's also an upgrade path you can take if need be.
look into a 1440p 144hz panel too if you go with a card that powerful.

there is not much point in going for an 8core variant. if you only care for gaming or keeping the budget low, a 6 core will do just fine. if you actually need multicore perf for productivity, you will be better of investing the extra $ to get the 12 core.
>>
>>83827243
I'd personally torture myself and go in this order; GPU, monitor, ram (match current stick(s) for 16GB or just go 8GB x 2, 3200mhz), CPU. just to weed out the bottlenecks without wasting cash for no reason.
btw you may need to upgrade bios if you haven't already. https://www.asus.com/Motherboards-Components/Motherboards/TUF-Gaming/TUF-B450-PLUS-GAMING/HelpDesk_BIOS/

yea, its the current top of the line for gaming (aside from the more expensive 5800x/5900x/5950x)
you can do slightly better in value for money with the 11400 from intel

that's not how that works. even if you're averaging just 100FPS on a 144hz panel it'll still be a lot smoother and enjoyable than being capped at 60fps
if you go with something as powerful as a 3060 you may as well lean on its power
oh btw I was wrong, your board can take the 5000 series cpus. oops

not sure what you don't understand?
the order that anon proposes is kinda subjective. personally, i'd go cpu, ram, *wait for gpu prices to improve*, gpu, monitor
or maybe cpu, ram, used gtx 970, monitor
as for the bios update, you may need to install a newer cpu (definitely will need it for a 5600x, maybe for a 3600x too, i dunno)

ok so, you have a 450 mobo. that can take the current 5000 series chips, so no point upgrading that.
your 2600 is slower than the 3600, which is slower than the 5600x.
you can upgrade to more cores, but if you are only gaming, it won't make a noticable difference.
so, imo, 5600x for gaming. unless you are doing productivity stuff that needs multicore perf, in which case go up to the 5900x

Is there a way to fix this? Is it just an AMD thing or an AMD on Linux thing? My previous card was a 1060 3GB and it never had this problem (though it did have the problem of having too little VRAM for the game).

Don't buy anything until the new CPUs come out. You'll need a board that has an updated BIOS available for download if you're planning to buy on launch. It'd be great for my current hardware - but what about future upgrades?
If I were to get an RTX GPU, is DLSS any good at 1080p (upscaling from 720p, 900p?), or is too low a resolution to work with?

no, go 1440p/144hz. better yet, go 4k/144hz if its in your budget, the m28u goes for 700-800 shekels nowadays.

>is DLSS any good at 1080p (upscaling from 720p, 900p?)

Should I go for it? His GPU is brand-new and mine is already some months old, it also has 12gb which should be better. The videos I saw on benchmark make my gpu look better for older games, but I'm worried it will fall behind in a few years and be obsolete for gaming faster than a newer generation.

I don't understand the practicality of that statement considering the real life benchmarks of actual use cases show massive improvements..

I'm more worried about future games being more built to cater to 3000 gpus than 2000 gpus. I reckon mine probably has more raw power but could do worse in the future. In a few videos I saw comparing the two the 2070 capped at a higher fps, but the newer the game the more fps the 3060 had in comparison.

Yeah totally massive retard

>>83829193
You can update your BIOS now. You'll probably get a few quality of life upgrades for your 2600 anyway, like faster boot times

>>83829234
Might be within budget but if you want actually good performance, you'll get a 5600X now and a better CPU later. The 5900X will never be noticeably better than the 5600X while they are both high end gaming CPUs. If you're some shithead who thinks he's going to keep the CPU for 10 years, sure you can pay extra now for no noticeable performance gain only to have it be trash for gaming by the time there's any differentiation between the two

>>83829281
High refresh is mandatory for gaming. Even if you're not hitting the max refresh all the time, that's fine, but adaptive sync takes over. DLSS is for 1440p or above, except as a last resort. If possible, buy a 1440p monitor if you're buying new now. They're barely more expensive than a decent 1080p monitor

Geez, I really didn't expect a simple question like this to devolve into this shitposting. Sorry for that.

Out of curiosity, where do you all sit your PC so it's both open and not sucking up carpet dust? Is it just my issue being a desklet without enough room for it?
>>
is the only difference on the upcoming 5000 refresh a "3d cache" or will it be more substantial? sounds kinda stupid. i am considering alder lake if theres no big ryzen launch soon.
>>
>>83831865
I sit it on my personally made from Americas finest wood stand that me and my old man made over the course of 25 years
>>
>>83831879
based
That’s how you build a legacy.
Me and my old cut down a 2000 year old sequoia and made every piece of furniture in our 9 bedroom, 3 story house from that mighty tree
>>
>>83831865
I used a ~$20 stand to keep it off the carpet back when I was a desklet. Now I have a 160x80 cm desk so it sits up here with me.
>>
>>83831007
There's nothing wrong with custom built computers. You knowingly pay extra for convenience, that's it.
>>
>>83831865
Of course, my rig is rackmounted with everything else
>>
>>83832025
Yeah its a no brainer for me, for just £40 they build it, test all the components and do a 24 hour burn, install Win10, install all the latest drivers and Bios and deliver it.
>>
>>83831866
The Ryzen architecture benefits disproportionately from increased cache because RAM accesses are slower than they would be on a monolithic die. For an EoL refresh just increasing the cache would be "fine" from a performance perspective. It should be noted that the current rumours indicate that the refresh will only apply to the top end of Zen 3 processors - if you're just in the market for a 5600X gaming rig then it's probably not worth it to wait. If you have a graphics card already, that is. If you don't, then you might as well keep looking because no amount of 3D cache or bigLITTLE will make up for paying 200% for the card.
>>
Is it possible to enable idle fan stop when using a custom GPU fan curve in MSI afterburner? The card is a 6800 XT
>>
Is a 1tb m.2 drive sufficient? Do you need excess space?
>>
>>83832066
>just increasing the cache would be "fine" from a performance perspective
If it's eol then it's worth it to go for the top of the line,no?
>>
>>83832158
If you want bulk storage buy a big HDD
>>
>>83832158
>Do you need excess space?
In total? Yes. But I would get a larger SATA SSD or even an HDD for that. If I were putting together a new build right now, I would use a 1 TB M.2 for Windows and general document/picture storage, and get a 2-4 TB SATA SSD for games. Then of course, an external HDD is always handy to have for general backing up and big ole bulk storage when you need it.
>>
>>83832066
i would be interested in the max cores for production work stuff. so like the 6950x or the 12900k i guess. what do you think will happen with the 6950x vs the 12900k? alder lake looks like it jumped 100 points in single thread performance which is pretty big. i wonder if a "3d cache ryzen refresh" could match that.
>>
>>83832251
Alder Lake is a house fire waiting to happen, it'll be temp throttled 99% of the time
>>
>>83826833
Objectively incorrect. Many manufacturers show top hosing as the preferred method for install.
>>
>>83832262
nooooo
I thought water coolers could handle ANY throttling issues!
Does this mean the Arctic Liquid Freezer II is jot up to the task of taming Alder Lake?
>>
>>83832262
but it will be running most things on the efficiency cores unless you need max performance for a big workload. also for some reason i used a 11th gen 10nm intel laptop that had a retardedly fast desktop experience and i dont know why that was.
>>
>>83832262
Alder lake's 10nm lithography has a higher transistor density than TSMC's 7nm so I don't know where this retardation is coming from
>>
>>83832283
>>83832291
>>83832300

Nothing can cool Alder Lake, meme buyers will fine out real fast
>>
>>83832306
I will jump ship from AMD in a heartbeat if Alder lake is more than 15% more performant. I have zero loyalty to corporations
>>
>>83832167
I can't make value judgements for you. I took pains to avoid mentioning value or worth; to say that it would be "fine" is to say that it would be in line with improvements we have seen in other recent generational refreshes (eg. Zen 1 to Zen+, Kaby Lake to Coffee lake, Coffee Lake to Comet Lake, etc.). Its value to you will likely be primarily determined by the price at launch and whether you'll actually benefit from the improvements. If you've got money to burn then there's nothing stopping you, of course, and there's good arguments to be made for both staying on the most mature and stable expression of DDR4 and for jumping onto the latest DDR5 platform.

>>83832251
If you really want to know, wait for benchmarks. Real benchmarks. The kind of """leaks""" we're getting right now put Rocket Lake ahead of Zen 3 and we all know how that turned out. If you want my opinion I think the 5950X refresh will beat the 12900K in production work. Primarily due to a core advantage. In lightly threaded applications it's anyone's guess.
>>
>>83832342
>The kind of """leaks""" we're getting right now put Rocket Lake ahead of Zen 3 and we all know how that turned out.
Rocket lake has higher performance core than Zen 3, so yes, it turned out well.

>>
>>83832357
They equalized performance in gaming (quite a feat on a backported 5 year old node IMO) but production still lags behind. More importantly, and this was my point, the early leaks put it at a significant advantage in all areas which simply did not turn out to be the case. I would caution anyone against trusting the current "leaks", from Intel and AMD, because it's obvious many, if not most, are deliberate marketing ploys.

Trannies are usually just as capable as male programmers, it's all the incompetent ciswomen that are muddying the waters.

But AAA games being crap isn't really anything to cry over, AAA games have been the safest, least creative titles available since 2008. There are loads of awesome indie games now to fill the void.

YWNBAW
>>
>>83832790
i prefer air coolers because i like the way they look
put it really just depends what you want. Ai is more about aesthetic and you can mount the rad pretty much anywhere

performance wise you might shave 2 degrees off with an aio
>>
>>83832814
I also heard that AIOs are kind of a one night stand and once the water evaporates, they just become e-waste with no way to somehow refill it. Is that correct?
>>
>>83832827
AIOs dont have water in them you fucking retard, they have coolant and it doesnt evaporate
>>
>>83832827
yeah and there's more failure points like the pump dying and air burning it up
but this usually takes like 3 years to happen
>>
>>83832731
also miners getting rekt
>>
>>83832790
see for yourself:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xCxqITPtXXA

adding to the performance/noise advantages:
- with an AIO, all the heat of the cpu is thrown directly out of the case, making the ambient inside the case cooler for your GPU's benefit
- AIOs make it easier to work on your system. no more struggling with ram height or trying to unhook the pcie clip that holds down your GPU
- *much* safer than big ass aircoolers if you ever want to move your system. the aircooler is ~1kg of metal hanging of your mobos pcb, the aio is securely bolted to the case frame

on the other hand, aircoolers have a reliability advantage. less stuff to go wrong, basically only the fans, and those are easily replaceable, usually.
>>
>>83832839
Why are they called water coolers if they don't have water inside, then?
>>
>>83832877
They are filled with distilled water and a thermally conductive fluid, they are filled with coolant.

>>
>>83832790
They're both really close. A 'good' AIO will keep your temps lower by a few degrees, but also cost more and wear out much faster than a NH-D15, which could last you the next 30 years if they keep giving out free mounting hardware. AIOs definitely have an edge if you move your tower around a lot or have a small form factor case. I have a NH-D15 on my CPU and an AIO on my GPU. There's just not a huge difference.

have you ever learned the water cycle in elementary school
>>
>>83832891

>>

For what it's worth, I would still have a 140mm fan above the GPU, just not one next to it/below it, which is my concern.
>>
>>83832977
dude, at this point in time it is *infinitely* easier to change/upgrade your case than it is to get your hands on a GPU

b550 is more like "Chinese budget"

depends on the cpu too and if you """""((((need))))""""" better power delivery for more cores

I'm thinking of buying a 120mm slim fan, since that should give me enough clearance. Max GPU length without a front fan should be 335mm, the GPU I'm buying is 318mm, give or take.
