FAQ:
>Which version should I get?
>Where can I get the ISOs?
>What the fuck is an .svf file?
>What does LTSC 2019 have?
>How do I verify the ISOs aren't fake/infected?
>How do I activate Windows?
>How do I change to a different edition post-install?
>How do I disable backported telemetry in 8.1/7?
>What software do you recommend/should I install?
See paste. (your other unmentioned question is probably here, too)

>How do I debloat/debotnet Windows 10 1803-2004?
Offline (pre-installation): Optimize-Offline
Guide: https://rentry.co/mdl-optimize-guide
Online (live installation): privacy.sexy / wpd.app / W10Privacy / privatezilla
Don't mix offline & online tools with each other.

>Do I really need to debloat it?
If you had to ask, then no.

>Can you get the Ryzen scheduler on LTSC 2019?
No. Wait for LTSC 2022, or use SAC (semi-annual channel) editions.

>Can I upgrade to LTSC 2019?
Only from a previous LTSC build(s) w/o doing the upgradematrix hack in paste.

>Is Windows 10 2004/20H2 OK?
Only Education & Enterprise.

>I already run Windows 7, but don't want to clean install?
The non-LTSC installers can upgrade.

>Are homebrew ISOs safe to use (Gen2/Ameliorated)?
Depending on trust&rep, almost never. Most of the time these are unverifiable and unreproducible.

10 LTSC has the benefit of being able to shut off 99% of telemetry and it doesn't have the Store or any modern apps besides Settings so you get the old speedy Vista/7/8 versions of things like Calculator and Photo Viewer.
LTSC also gets longer support. LTSC 2019 will be supported until 2029, 4 years beyond 10's EOL and LTSC IOT 2022 will be supported until 2031, 6 years beyond 10's EOL, but LTSC 2022 (Non-IOT) will only get support until 2026.
>>
>>83390574
>>83390806
It should be noted in addition to this, LTSC versions don't get any hardware updates, so things like Ryzen CPUs don't run properly on LTSC 2019 and never will. They'll run fine on LTSC 2022, but it's only a matter of time before some new hardware doesn't work correctly with it. Many applications, especially games require specific versions of 10, usually the latest.
If you want hardware/feature updates and support for newer applications use normal 10 Enterprise.

how do I keep windows from rearranging my icons all the time? the main thing that causes it is running games in lower resolutions than the display resolution which throws off window positioning and arbitrarily rearranges icons. I'd be fine with autoarranged icons but it can't even manage to do that right as it's never in alphabetical order, or it will start out that way and restart from a again before sorting all the icons.

>can i turn off telemetry in enterprise
Yes. Enterprise and Education can set telemetry to 0 like LTSC via group policy.

The Semi-annual release Enterprise/Education version works fine with Ryzen and can turn off telemetry. Pro can't.

Should I use enterprise or education? Also how do you disable telemetry on them? 3rd party apps?
>>

>Should I use enterprise or education?
They're basically the same, mostly just a licensing distinction that doesn't matter to anyone not paying for them.
>Also how do you disable telemetry on them?
Use Group Policy just like on LTSC:
Press Win+R > type gpedit.msc then in the editor: Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Data Collection and Preview Builds > Allow Telemetry > Enabled >Set to 0 - Security (Enterprise Only)
>>
>>83392298
LTSC 2019 will run on Ryzen CPUs, but the performance is nerfed pretty badly compared to 10 1903 and newer. You can say the 2-20% decrease in performance doesn't matter, but I wouldn't call that "working properly".
>>
>>83392383
Not him, but it's that the only policy?
>>
How do I disable the different coloured text in PowerShell?

I know I could make it all white but I want it to be all black when I SSH in via my Mac terminal. So ideally I just need it to be "neutral" coloured like command prompt.
>>
>>83392298
I would be compelled to use LTSC if I gained performance rather than lose it even if it was a 2%. There's no much incentive other than "it doesn't have the store". Powertoys now isn't compatible anymore with LTSC 2019 which is shit.
>>
>>83392727
Personally I have performance gain on LTSC compared to the normie editions like pro, just because of all the crap that isn't running in the background.
And I had no problem running it with my new hardware from 2021. However I don't have a ryzen, so I know nothing about that.
Ultimately, if you genuinely believe that not having microsoft store is the only incentive to use LTSC, then you're really not the type of guy that wants and needs LTSC and you should be fine on pro or whatever.

Also for people that use WSL, WSL1 is available in LTSC 2019, but WSL2 isn't, and will only be available starting from LTSC 2002. Something to keep in mind if you use it.
>>
>>83392906
>2002
I meant 2022.
>>
>>83392906
I used LTSC on a haswell build I had up until last year and honestly compared to 2004 (which was the last version of Windows I used on that one) I didn't notice much of a difference in performance at all. All that crap running in the background as you say wasn't enough to make my system behave noticeably any more responsive or quick. Shit, I found that disabling mitigations was more effective, at least for stuff like opening some applications and installing them. I can't imagine that something such as a Ryzen 3600 would even give a flying fuck about the calculator running in the background. Not saying it should, but I would think that affects old systems more rather than anything Ryzen (unless we're talking about shitty budget but new laptops).

>>
>>83392317
Basically the same thing but Enterprise has certain business/sysadmin-oriented features you'll probably never use while Education has certain privacy-oriented features enabled by default with no way to change it
Also disables things like ads in Start menu or "tips on how to use Windows" by default, again, with no way to change it
Also didn't have Cortana until relatively recently
Education might be a good pick if you want a slightly less annoying Windows installation out of the box

Is there any way to completely disable the function key on a Windows laptop, without using UEFI settings?
My grandpa wanted a new laptop and bought himself an Asus TUF F17, but he keeps hitting FN+right arrow and switching the keyboard from static light to rainbow RGB. edition shouldn't matter. you should be able to use any windows 10 edition that is the same architecture as yours (e.g., if you have a 64-bit device, which you probably do, make sure you're using 64-bit drivers). only other thing that might matter is if it has like the specific windows 10 release, but doubtful.

Damn, that’s what I was worried about. I downloaded a Microsoft keybinding utility (hoping I could bind f1+f12 -> FN or something) and it didn’t recognize the FN key was even being pressed. Thanks for confirming it, Anon. I’ve already tried their RGB adjustment software and it won’t let me lock one configuration in place, so I might have to choose between physically disabling the key somehow and finding him a new PC.

you can usually disable it in bios/uefi settings

I looked for that under advanced settings, but I couldn’t find the option. Just the usual enable/disable hyper-v, the boot menu, etc.
>>
>>83399512
i'd hunt around a bit more, it might not be under advanced settings. you could try pulling up the manual for your laptop or possibly searching online, too.
>>
>>83399512
>>83399610
there could also be a "function lock" key combo. i think if you turn function lock on, it basically disables the function key unless you reenable it using the same key combo, but it doesn't persist through reboots.
>>
>>83399610
Good idea, Anon. I’ve done the latter, but hopefully their official documentation will have something useful.
>>83399621
That would be perfect, but I don’t think the Asus TUF F17 has a function lock combo. It does have a windows key lock and a few other hotkey settings (like making f1-f12 act as hotkeys even when fn isn’t pressed) but none that just disable the fn key from working.
Or they do and I’ve spent the last few hours missing them. That’s always a possibility too.

i can't say for sure since i'm not super familiar with powershell conventions, but i would focus on the top one. it looks like it's already parsing the top line correctly at least (note that it's putting the part it can't run in single quotes, i don't think it's a problem with it not parsing the entire string so quote shouldn't be necessary).

it sounds like it doesn't like accepting the value you gave it as a parameter. are you able to invoke-command on that normally (e.g. without it as an argument to lockscreen)?

>>
>>83407074
>>83407110
yeah running this works perfectly fine (locks the screen like I want). Whats interesting is if i put the entire command value in parentheses when i open powershell it causes this to run and the screen locks. Really confused with why i cant use this as an alias, maybe i should try making it a function instead?

Invoke-command {rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation}

set-alias -name lockscreen -value (Invoke-command {rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation})
>>
>>83407147
i'm not sure. you might be able to work around it by simply setting it up as a powershell script and putting the script in a path directory, though? i've done similar things in batch, which i'm more familiar with.
>>
>>83407214
function lockscreen {Invoke-command {rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation}}

This actually works just fine, its just confusing that the alias does not seem to support this functionality
>>
>>83407227
it might be that alias is intended to be purely used for aliasing command names, so possibly doing it as a function is the correct method anyway

Short version - how do I sign a driver or bypass restrictions of having digitally signed driver?

Long version - MS being dicks removed drivers for their WP (Lumia included) phones in recent images. I had to install from new image on new laptop and cannot access my Lumia phone after plugging it in due to lack of drivers (even as usb storage). I have older PC with old installation that still have drivers for it but when I move INF file containing drivers from old PC to another and try to install it, it refuses to do so stating that "this driver is not digitally signed". How do I bypass it?

Thanks for help.

tl;dr there are a few different ways, i recommend you use method 3. remember to disable it again after you install per the text in the green box. you don't want to permanently allow installing unsigned drivers, just install the one you need and then reenable signature checks.

I know I'm late but I think the gist of what you are asking is does using PCI express on the M.2 slot disable other PCI express slots

The answer to that is usually the first M.2 slot closest to the CPU doesn't disable anything.
The second slot however won't usually disable some PCI express device but will disable some sata ports regardless of using PCIe or sata on that slot.

All motherboards are different however so read your manual
>>
>>83410315
Check your audio, usually you need to manually change it. Just left click audio icon in taskbar, then you'll see at the popup there is "v"/dropdown button. Left click that and it should show the options.

My tip is: Abandon windows and get Linux
>>
>>83411339
Not much reason not to do both really. I hop over to Linux frequently and also have a home server running Linux that I interact with frequently. My main OS is still Windows since it tends to be the most convenient for the tasks I do most often in the day, and most of my general workflow/automations are already geared around Windows and it hasn't been worth finding alternatives to move that stuff over yet. Still, each OS is at its core a tool and anyone who lets some biases toward a particular brand dissuade them from using the most effective tool for the task at hand is a fool.

sounds like it ran the 21H2 feature activation thing. the H2 "feature upgrade" just activates some disabled stuff in H1 i believe. pretty sure it's reached semi-annual channel by now, so you were bound to get it at some point.

>some gay ass newspaper icon appears on my taskbar
you can remove that by right clicking it and setting news and interests to off

>task manager is now full of shit services doing whatever the fuck
service host isolation has been a thing for a very long time, you can disable specific services if you want using services.msc but unless there's a specific service you've found is impacting performance, it shouldn't matter and you shouldn't touch them. you should research anything you change on blackviper's website first. http://www.blackviper.com/service-configurations/black-vipers-windows-10-service-configurations/

Yes. It's a holdover from when I scattered batch files all over my hard disk. Way, WAY back, I would dump them in C:\DOS, but then it occurred to me to just put (something like) C:\SCRIPTS on the %PATH%, and that's what I've done for about 20 years now.
>>
>>83421289
You can do that with any edition of windows.
>>
>>83421711
I guess that probably makes sense as the better way to do that. I don't have any scripts i use on windows except one python script for downloading images/videos from 4chan threads. But i dont think i could call that directly by including it in path as you need python before the script name else it opens up in a new window which closes as soon as its done (which i dont want) so i also just have a function for that in my profile. What kind of scripts do you have that you regularly use?

Only brainlets assume edge is exactly the same as chrome
>>
>>83421859
not that guy but you could just encapsulate the python script in a batch or powershell script that handles calling it i'd imagine
>>
>>83421920
Yeah that's true, it seems a little odd to have a powershell script that just is calling a python script, seems like an unnecessary step but maybe thats because i dont already have a script folder in path so it was easier to just add to profile.
>>
I have my Pictures folder on a second drive. Is there a way to have this folder still show up under my users folder on C drive so i can easily navigate to it when i open powershell? It's annoying to have to do multiple steps to get to the folder (first d: then cd into the Picture folder from there)

I just got a new laptop with an intel 10th gen CPU and while setting up my Windows 10 Education install I noticed that advanced power settings in control panel is missing all the useful settings? I googled and most solutions mention to change some regedits to get it working but some functions may not work etc. Do you guys know the problem and know a good working workaround or should I just not use these settings?

It’s like you’re trying to kill grandma at this point, that feature is put in place to protect us. Don’t worry, you’ll be able to return to normal login once we finally get 117% of the population vaccinated in order to reach heard immunity.

Yes, all (publically-released) Insider versions are "timebombed" to stop you using them forever. The idea being, if you're on Insider, you'll be receiving a new version soonish anyway, with a new, later timebomb.
>do i need to worry about losing my license?
No though, depending on how Microsoft handles upgrades in the final version of Windows 11, you may lose the ability to install and activate Windows 10 legitimately.
>will kms work with 11?
Almost certainly - but I wouldn't bet my grandma's life on it. It's one of those "we won't be completely sure until it gets here" situations. By rights, it'll be the same situation as Windows 10: all SKUs except Home and some weird Embedded versions can be activated by KMS.

But Microsoft is the only company that has actully done any work on the engine.
For that reason alone It's more detached than any of the others

Finally leaving good old Win 7 for 10. After the installation do I need to install drivers manually or Windows will do it automatically?
>>
>>83423932
By default it does, but so many anons use memescripts as a matter of course, and turn every single option on, even if they don't understand them. Suffice it to say, there's an option to turn driver updating from Windows Update off.
>>
>>83423932
most things should work ootb, but i would recommend getting the latest gpu driver from the manufactuers website as windows update drivers are sometimes outdated
>>
>>83423932
windows update will get good generic drivers for most shit. probably want to update graphics driver manually though.

yes

I'm on Intel intergrAted graphics (HD4600)
>>
>>83424238
then the driver provided by windows update should be fine.
generally, you only need to manually install drivers when something doesn't work
>>
>>83424149
windows 10 will run fine on that. most of my devices (i have eight) are at least that old and all of them run win10 education with zero issues.

you can run win7 if you prefer though. make sure to check how to get updates for it.

KDE Connect seems to be available for Windows.
It allows you to pair devices and share files between them when they're on the same network.
I've only ever used it with Linux and Android though and I don't know how well it works for large files.
>>
>>83424290
I would say that you might also want to install drivers if your system is very recent. Like Ryzen 5000 or 11th gen intel

But any other case it's best to leave shit alone if it works. It's probably in your best interest because M$ does do lots of driver testing and specific driver versions are served by Windows update for a reason.
