>want to install Linux on X230
>Thinkwiki tells you installation without CD-ROM drive is possible, no external drive is needed
>Pre-installation tells you to create Rescue and Recovery Media, so I still require an external CD-ROM drive
>>
>>82637647
um... you can use a USB stick to install a linux distro. and if that's too complicated, just grab the dock w/optical drive, they're only a few bucks on ebay.
>>
>>82637682
Yes, but I meant that Windows recovery is put on a CD and DVD.
>>
>>82637698
I see, then just grab a dock with the drive.

What thinkpad should I buy that has a comparable screen to a macbook air?

T460 - i7-6600U, 12GB DDR4, 512GB NVMe.
Docking station included, for about 350$. This is a good deal right ?
>>

yeah that's actually a great deal
>>
>>82637647
>>Pre-installation tells you to create Rescue and Recovery Media, so I still require an external CD-ROM drive
lol, what clown distro is this? This is clearly optional, and as long as you have backups, completely superfluous.
If something fucks up, simply burn the newest edition onto USB, reinstall the OS, and then restore backups.
Also I'm sure the "rescue and recovery" can be burnt onto USB as long as it's an iso. Finally you can even pull the drive and save your files with an external USB 2.5" storage enclosure.

Why do all used thinkpads smell like old gross chain smoking men?

My T420s has the shitty hinges I described
>>
>>82642491
They're not shitty, they're heavily used. I'll admit that there are some laptop hinges that you can tighten with a nut or whatever, but thinkpad hinges last longer without modification than any other laptop hinge out there. It just sucks that they're not repairable, at least they're replaceable.
>>
What's your distro of choice to put on your ThinkPad?
>>
>>82642925
The problem wasn't that the hinges themselves were sloppy, it's that their mounting points to the lid had come off, so that the lid wasn't attached at all to the hinge any more. This wouldn't have happened if they'd just drilled a threaded hole into the metal lid itself rather than injection molding plastic around the lid to effectively glue brass threaded inserts to it. This is a common problem with cheap laptops that use all plastic lids and not something I expected from an expensive business laptop.

Im currently between a Thinkpad T495 and a E495 both with Ryzen 5 3500U, the differences are not that huge but the T495 has solded ram and only one SSD M2 Slot, does the T and E really matter that much? The E495 seems like the more logical buy. I'm just gonna use it to play some old games, low poly 3D shit and light game dev, all of this in arch (I use arch btw). My current PC it's a i5 6th gen with a Nvidia GTX 950m but the Vega 8 in that Ryzen 3500U with dual channel it's far superior. What Do?

newfag here, got two questions for the thread; first off, why are the smaller laptops (14inch) more expensive than the bigger ones (15inch) of similar specs? Is it just cause it's harder to fit all of the components into the a smaller package?
And second, I'm trying to decide on one of the current E series thinkpads, I need it for everyday casual use (as in no programming or 3d work or anything like that) and school, would like a 14incher for ease of transport, but I'm not 100% sold on any particular model yet, might get a laptop backpack thing (recommendations? are they worth it?). I'm looking at the E15 AMD gen2, E15 AMD gen3, E14 intel gen2 and the E14 AMD gen3. Are any of these worth it? Also I'm assuming AMD beats intel most of the time, just from what i've read online...
Previous experience with laptops is limited to a lenovo B5400, been using it about nine years, I put linux mint on it about two years ago. I'll keep windows on the new chinkpad for now though, need all that office360 shit for classes, plus I'm not gonna risk fucking up a brand new thinkpad with a linux distro that I'm not qualified to trouble shoot and fix, my current lenovo does a bunch of weird shit I can't solve, so I'll just tolerate all the windows bullshit as best as I can, any tips on how to make it less Windows-y?

Also, what's the point of buying new memepads with intel? Ryzen is more power-efficient and the built-in graphics are far better. In fact I fell for the ryzen 4xxx (((lenovo ultrabook))) meme with soldered literally everything and few ports.
The cpu is great, but never ever I will buy such a piece of crap of a laptop (it may be ok for study tho and other things, overall it's okay, but it will die in two years).
I don't care it the laptop is thin or whatever it is, if it limits the usage in some way.

I have two retard-tier questions on displays.
>1. why are 16:10 or other displays better than the 720 one's? I've seen a lot of ratio snobbery in this thread, but never really understood for what reason.
>2. if I get a resolution greater than true hd (iirc 1080), will it still be HD? Meaning, will there be loss or distortion of pixels trying to fit the smaller resolution.
>>
>>82657993
16:10 gives you slightly more lines of code than 16:9, if you don't care for that then it doesn't matter - note that "720p" refers to the resolution, you can still have a 16:10 720p display

however the resolution on most of the 16:10 models only goes up to 720p, so unless you get modding the display panel, you'll be better off with a more recent ThinkPad with a 1080p 16:9 display, as it will still show more lines of text than a 16:10 720p ThinkPad

There are many ways to back up Windows for easy restoration using Linux utilities like Clonezilla or Windows programs. However if you're just learning Linux and your computer isn't ancient the easy way to churn through distros (every noob does this as it's the only way to learn what you will like) is using Linux virtual machines on your Windows host. Running Linux on bare metal is not urgent when you're just trying it out for fun.
My Windows machines get Linux guests and my Linux machines get Windows and Linux guests because it's all convenient and all free. W10 doesn't even require activation (though it's safe and easy with a bit of study).
The suggestion to get the dock is always a good one and docks should get more love especially since most notebook users have external peripherals, and a DVD burner is a fine way to back up files so malware cannot damage them (burn at slowest speed possible for best burn, I've burned live CDs and DVDs since they were available).

If it's in good condition and you have no spare notebook I'd toss a twenty dollar used SSD (Samsung or Intel) off Eghey into it since spinning rust of the era is unbearable and keep it as a Linux trainer or backup Windows machine since being only one deep on notebooks is a bad idea. Upgrade to 8GB RAM using used modules if you can and while it won't be quick it will be much more usable than otherwise.

Having an extra notebook like that is handy for data rescue, trying different distros on USB or bare metal and as a utility PC you don't have to care about. The drive caddy is a handy feature.

I use my fleet of old T61s for all the above uses, to read service manuals, look up parts in my shop etc.

Personally I think 16:10 is perfect for laptops, it just feels like much more screen real estate because your eyes can move up and down easier than left and right. Also, the 800p 16:10 displays on the 12" lappys don't look too bad. The filepicjer menu that pops up when you "open file" is 800px tall regardless of your display, so on 768p it gets cut off, but on 800p its fully visible. I use a 1680x1050 16:10 laptop all the time, and it looks indistinguishable from a 1080p display. Don't really know what you mean about loss of pixels... Try playing a 720p video on a 1080p display... It just looks a little worse, it doesn't ruin the video or anything

Follow-up blog post to the previous post nobody responded to anyway:
The ath9k m.2 card arrived, and after installing it in my T440p and testing it, I can confirm that it does in fact use ath9k. It even has not completely dogshit speeds considering it doesn't use the full slot, is 802.11n, and only has 1x1 MIMO support. It's a lower end card for the driver series, but it means that I don't need an adapter that doesn't fit into the chassis to humor the idea of installing linux-libre on this thing. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

People (mostly on reddit) recommend intel 802.11ax wireless cards because it makes the wifi fast. Problem is that those require firmware blobs to use. Any card that uses ath9k doesn't, but those are restricted to 802.11n and the glut of cards are in the msata form factor. You could use a board that adapts msata cards to m.2, but it's big and won't fit in the cavity the T440p has for its wlan and wwan slots. Turns out that m.2 form factor cards that work with ath9k exist, so it's possible to still have free (as in freedom) wireless on Thinkpads newer than the 30-series.
>what's the keyboard on the t440p like?
Fine. I know people complain about the six-row's key travel compared to good seven-rows, but its bigger problem is all the missing keys. It's not a dealbreaker, and I've certainly used worse laptop keyboards.

Because of this I was thinking of charging him $300 and sending him a link to a 6 cell battery. This thing also has a 940MX and a 1440p screen. Is $300 too cheap? Is that kind of battery life normal? >Debian is 100% free by default.

>What is this microcode required for stability? Performed quite a few software flashes, but never encountered this requirement in the documentation.
This is pretty common knowledge among many libreboot users. And as someone with a libreboot desktop, I can say that the Core 2 Quads definitely need updated microcode or they will behave quite erratically. Another example, this guy made an updated libreboot for X200 before the most recent official update and commented on this issue:
https://github.com/JaGoLi/Libreboot-X200-Updated#important-to-microcode-or-not
I've never understood why the libreboot tranny doesn't like microcode, there's still factory microcode on the CPU itself, so not updating it doesn't make you any "extra free." The EC is a proprietary blob on the board that's significantly larger and more complex than a piece of microcode, yet they recommend updating that blob prior to flashing. Why is updated EC ok, but not updated microcode? Even Stallman himself said blobs that are solely located in ROM are acceptable:
https://stallman.org/to-4chan.html

>>Debian is 100% free by default.
>I think one difference is that Trisquel has a libre kernel (deblobbed).
The Debian kernel is libre as well. Even the Ubuntu kernel doesn't have blobs (they're located in the linux-firmware package). I used to use the linux-libre kernel until I realized it was a meme.

Give it at least 6gb (8 preferred), a cheap SSD (desperately needed but used is fine) and flash Middleton BIOS (from USB or live CD/DVD) and they still do decently. I've a pile of T61ps bought for the WUXGA screens with dead Nvidia boards I stuffed Intel GMA boards into from T61s with bad screens back when it was worth it in 2012 and they all still run fine. The only T61 that died on me was one I bought in 2008 and used constantly for years. It shall get another system board on principle.

>Run xrandr to see if it recognizes the port existing, if not, try booting into an Ubuntu stick and see if it recognizes it (I had this problem with manjaro, worked on Ubuntu). If the DP1 or whatever shows up, but says nothing is plugged in, its busted or maybe dirty.

Sound advice. I keep Deoxit and an old but clean toothbrush and some printer swabs (chem resistant, sponge tip so no fibers) for cleaning ports. The old PC Doctor diagnostic boot diskette is no longer available from Lenovo but if ya can find it online it's easy to write a CD or USB using a boot floppy image. I've not diagnosed a dock with it. The Thinkpad Forums could be a good place to ask about dock diagnostics.

If your ports are occupied then you're probably using it as a desktop so one way is do what I do and get the Ultrabase to add anything you want. They're a glorious vintage Pad accessory to which mere USB hubs do not compare.

If it must be mobile with Bluetooth, toss a USB Expresscard into the slot (too many Pad owners forget those exist) and gain two or three ports. I've used two of the AKE for many years and there's plenty of info on the Thinkpad forums where it would be wise to ask about more recent three port cards.

>>82674850
BTW the "more work" option is flash your BIOS to remve whitelist then install a combined BT and Wif card and remove the old Bluetooth card. I'm lazy most of the time so I'd go USB but if ya want mobility without taking up USB ports go ask what the latest greatest BT 5.0 /Wifi card is that fits (they're all inexpensive) on the Thinkpad forums and search r/thhinkpad for "Bluetooth 5.0 upgrade for X230".

An Expresscard should sort things out then and fits flush.

What's Linux support like on newer shitbox laptops?
I'm looking for a new daily driver.

That post was mine too. Since dangling external drives aren't much of a mobile thing you might consider placing the external drive in your Ultrabase instead (and making that the drive you use the least and not while mobile).
A suffiiciently large single internal SSD permits running your OS of choice in a virtual machine which generally beats booting multiple drives as it's extremely convenient allowing both host and guest OS to run at once, leaving external drives free as storage (which can be shared by host and guest. That avoids extra hardware. Of course you can also place your VMs on any external drive along with storage making them available to host, guest and even USB live boot hosts which can also function as rescue disks. (I keep Kali, Clonezilla, Bob's WinPE and FalconFour 4.0 for full Linux and WinPE live USB coverage and all my host drives have images of same for convenient writing to any handy drive.)
Booting off dangling externals is annoying except on a desktop.

You can fit more than one hdd in an x230. Not my pic but shows location that takes an mSATA and is normally reserved for a WWAN card.

If you want even more space some have used a dual mSATA/M.2 adapter in the 2.5" bay but I don't know which boot best. That would be another question for rebbit and the forums.

Best way is ALWAYS google the specific model (for Pads I also include the CTO code from the sticker) + name of the distro you specifically wish to use.

Support should be fine but detailed, model specific info is what you need and should therefore seek. I did the above and found:

https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Other-Linux-Discussions/Lenovo-V14-IIL-Touchpad-not-working-in-any-Linux-distro/m-p/5063292

Check the comments for Arch/Manjaro/ubuntu etc answers.

If there's a display model at your Microcenter you could bring a live USB and ask staff if you can boot it.

Brehs, I need to connect a SATA DVD reader to my x200 dock. I was thinking of using a normal PC one and connecting the sata ports (dock and reader) and use a spare computer just to provide power.
Would this work or am I retarded?

I forgot to add to check the Lenovo site, download the HMM and anything else of interest then do some reading to ensure you get what you want. Also note your linked Microcenter review mentions low battery life which may not matter.

https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en

82C6S03E00-N is the part number from the Microcenter ad which gets you

V14-ADA Laptop (Lenovo) - Type 82C6 - 82C6S03E00N

https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/lenovo-v-series-laptops/v14-ada/82c6/82c6s03e00n?linkTrack=Homepage%3ABody_Search%20Products&searchType=5&keyWordSearch=82C6S03E00-N

It should be a good utility PC but I'd max out the RAM as on any notebook since RAM is the usual limfac and 4GB is smol.

https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/lenovo-v-series-laptops/v14-ada/solutions/ht504725-where-to-find-the-maximum-supported-ram-information

is not canonical as it's common for notebooks to take more RAM than they are initially certified for but Lenovo blesses it to 12GB.

anons, I'm planning to buy x260, but I need a m.2 slot
I know it's possible to install it. I'm curious if anyone of you owns x260 with nvme
I have 2 options:
- try getting x270 nvme ssd kit
- try getting 01hy319 adapter and DC02C007K20
>>
>>82679179
It should work fine since the SATA drive doesn't care where the power comes from, but a spare PC is rather bulky compared to an external Molex power brick with a SATA adapter if size matters. It's perfectly safe to try. I've done it to power 3.5" SATA spinners while transferring data to notebooks.

Random example:
https://www.modchipcentral.com/store/product.php?productid=17668
>>
>>82679368
Apparently those need UEFI mode selected to boot from the M.2 which is worth remembering if you need that option.

Very nice. Good to know.
>but a spare PC is rather bulky compared to an external Molex power brick with a SATA adapter if size matters.
I don't have one of those adapters, unfortunately. I have 2 old PCs on an open "mount" already, so it shouldn't be much of a chore as long as it works.

Thank you for your answer and time. I'll be setting up the reader now. Have a good one.

I'm running x270 with nvme in uefi mode

I just wonder if I can use the same part in x260
I've found a second solution on reddit, but it's more complicate and more expensive
>>
>>82679616
It won't hurt anything to try and you already own the parts. Post results if it works.

I unfortunately need to run windows 10 for school this semester. I found a used Thinkpad n22 with W10 pro on it.
Hardware is:
CPU:Intel Celeron N3050 @ 1.60GHz
RAM: 4GBDDR3
229GB SSD
Integrated GPU of course
battery still works and holds a charge

I can get it for $100, is it worth it/will it suffice?
My use case will be mainly networking and note taking. Programs will be Cisco Packet Tracer, VSCode, Onenote. Shit like that. Worried the RAM might not be sufficient enough. When I'm done school in ~6 months I'm going to wipe it and put Linux on it to actually use.

Thoughts /g/?
Thank you :)
>>
>>82681492
nvm. it's a HDD. shit is going to be slow as piss, not buying it.
>>
>>82681492
>Intel Celeron N3050
I'd be more worried about this cpu then the ram. it's literally worse then the pentium 4, you can look up any cpu comparisons to know that's true.
>I can get it for $100, is it worth it
I wouldn't take it even for free, that's how worthless it is
>will it suffice?
do you think it'll be fun working on a P4 in 2021? because that's what it is
>Thoughts /g/?
you're better off buying any other laptop made in the last 10 years,
around $100, T410 are possible
>>82681679
>HDD
not that big of a problem
>>
>>82644932
Soldered ram works fine in phones. If you will never increase RAM size it does not matter. If a notebook becomes obsolete sell or replace it, by which time whatever you spend on it now will be irrelevant so many years later.
>>
>>82681492
win10 would suck so much ass on that. for $10 it would still be too expensive, try a local recycler and pick up a thinkpad for cash
>>82681288
for that usecase screen quality might be of concern, try an old Chromebook with a nice screen and coreboot + Linux capability (check mrchromebox.tech)
>>82681138

There is little point in most notebooks as desktop PCs are vastly superior. Buy whatever suits your current use case as notebooks, computers and all objects made by man or nature are transient and disposable.
>>
>>82681870
>it works but it gets really hot, even when its not being used, so I have it just floating in my backpack for when I need to transfer large files on my x201

>>
>>82681693
>I wouldn't take it even for free, that's how worthless it is

Nor I and would not have wanted it free brand new. The specs were deliberately crippled by MSFT terms of sale to the OEM and they're so very bad they're useless even with a light Linux distro.
>>
>>82681138
Mine don't overheat but that may be luck of the draw. I've used mine since ~2012.

>>82681297
If OP is that stupid xir will forget which account they're on. Best to use a notebook with a different OS, and being only one PC deep is retarded so the spankbox can be backup too.
