Honestly with the way they have been selling I would not be surprised if QA went put the window and they just threw whatever components together that they had. There will probably be more bad cards this generation than in previous ones due to scarcity and the high demand. They don't have to worry about bricking your card because they know you'll buy it anyway.

Apparently it's caused by the menus running at a stupid high framerate and it's overheating the VRAM. The GPU should throttle this at a BIOS level but it seems like EVGA cards forgot about this so it runs until it pops like how old AMD CPUs used to run until it physically melts the socket instead of shutting down after 100C.

>>
>>82635403
You happen to be using an open source os like linux or whatever? If so, it most likely defaulted to a shitty open source driver. Tell it to use a proprietary one and it'll work fine.
>>
>>82636522
for the 3000 the FTW3 isn't as good as it was.
>>
I don't even understand how it's possible for a card to die from a game unless the driver somehow goes full retard and overvolts the everliving shit out of it, which I'm almost completely certain isn't happening here since voltage control doesn't depend on the particular game running. Any decent card can easily handle full load, so the only explanation I can see is that the card design is shit. If something literally popped, I'd guess it's a VRM MOSFET which was likely poor quality or insufficiently cooled, it's actually fairly common for VRMs on graphics cards to either not be actively cooled at all or at least not connected to the main heatsink.

>>82636522
If boards are literally popping due to running a video game, then yes. There is literally nothing a video game can do to break a properly built/designed card. Didn't EVGA have 2080 Tis frying themselves and black screening a few years ago as well? I remember there was some scandal around the Turing launch as well, even though the reference boards for those cards were overbuilt as fuck.
>>
>>82636512
intel works better because there is no pajeet-made opensource driver for it. amd wont release proprietary blobs afaik, so they have to use pajeetshit.

Technically every frame render cycle causes a transient spike, having several thousand 500w+ transient spikes per seconds can't be good for power delivery components.
>>
>>82636848
All modern GPUs made in the last 10 years require proprietary firmware blobs, Intel included.

>>82636958
If they're undersized and cannot handle the power delivery demands of the GPU or if they're not cooled properly, sure. It's also very unlikely that the GPU is drawing shitloads of power if it's rendering at several thousand FPS, that means that the amount of work it needs to do for every frame is minuscule (or it would take longer) and in such a situation it's very likely to hit a CPU bottleneck before you hit a GPU bottleneck, so at least on average the card will probably not be power capped and will be drawing less than it does at much lower FPS in a very demanding game. Sure, it's possible for VRM transistors to die due to transients but if that happens that just means the choice of transistor is crap and inadequate for the load the card puts on it.
>>
>>82635843
Yes, but also no. A modern high-end card might draw more power, but it still gets far more performance per watt than the 480 did.
It's not like you'd just get 480 performance if you limit a modern GPU to 250 watts.
>>
>>82637343
Well the game does do something that pushes temperature beyond what furmark can do so something is definitely happening on the software side of things that the hardware cannot cope with.
>>
>>82631739
They finally get what they deserve for ruining PCs.
>>
>>82636457
But muh 3% over reference
Seriously the bullshit AIBs do to leg up on another needs to be reigned in.
It was hilarious when Nvidia completely blocked factory tuning on 1070 Tis, I ain't never seen GPUs so price competitive in awhile.

I fully expect if this isn't handled correctly Nvidia will do some "reallocation" of silicon
>>
>>82637388
All that means is that these cards are poorly built or poorly designed. Other cards don't seem to be dying despite running the exact same game, obviously some cards are just shit.

>>
>>82637862
A 500W space heater is a shitty space heater, even more so if it mostly runs at 360W and only spikes to 500 for less than a second at a time.
But if you don't like it just buy a lower powered card. It's still going to be a shitload faster than a GTX 480.

> As for what happened, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 graphics card ran the title but fan speeds jumped to 100% almost in an instance followed by a black screen. On the second try at running New World, one of the components on the graphics card popped followed by the PC unable to POST. The user also encountered the same issue with a second EVGA GeForce RTX 3090 FTW3 graphics card which died while attempting to play New World. Another user reports that his graphics card was completely fried while running the game.
now that is very interesting. I wonder if someone can find out what is causing it. It would be the greatest of additions to malware to add a video card frying routine that bricks nvidia cards in mere seconds.
>>82633733
>people who expect a $2k gpu to not fucking combust on their own??
you'd expect so, but then there's that pesky shit called software drivers, which i'm sure will end up being part of the reason why these cards were able to get bricked in the first place. these are the same cards that were hell popular and used for 24h/7 days a week as crypto miners. something isn't adding up.

my gigabyte 3080 overheats under stress
my friend's gigabyte 3090 also overheats under stress.
i fixed mine with more thermal pads, his wasn't fixed even with the pads.

my question is how the fuck do you ship a product that doesn't even work out of the box? thermal throttling at the slightest load is not fucking acceptable. i don't know if this is a problem with nvidia or gigabyte

Njudea goyim cattle would buy even a literal pile of shit as long as it has the nvidia logo on it.

It is because 3090 was a meme-tier SKU that Nvidia threw-up at the last minute because they were genuinely scared that RDNA2 was going one-up them hard back in 2020.
It turned out that RDNA2 merely competes against Ampere at gayming workloads. 3090 quickly became silly and is quietly being discontinued for 3080Ti (Their original pitch for ultra-high, customer-tier GA102)

Custom GPUs and motherboards have gone up in price but I have yet to see where there is an increase in quality

My 8gb 580 that I paid £200 new for is fine thanks. My point still stands.
>>
>>82647942
I don't see prices ever going back to what they were a couple of years ago when something in the £250-£300 was more than enough for 1080p 60fps gaming. Media portraying a slight decrease in prices as going "back to normality" are just normalising these prices.

Mining will run these cards at like 50% power for maximum efficiency. A game is the exact opposite, where not locking the frame rate will result in pushing your GPU to its full limit and making it run as hot as possible.

What's wrong with that? 1080p 60fps should be a piece of cake nowadays and not cost much at all to run.

https://www.igorslab.de/en/evga-geforce-rtx-3090-vs-amazons-new-world-design-caused-evga-problem/

It's not RTX 3090 thats dying, it's EVGA shitty fan controller IC that's dying for whatever reason and since only EVGA uses that shit, their cards are dying
>>
>>82650068
remember when nvidia cucks were trying to blame shoddy CAPs on EVGA? Why is EVGA the company to pick on?
>>
>>82650051
Noting, I'm just saying that even if prices go back tomorrow, gamers won't be satisfied, because they now NEED 1440p@120
>>
>>82643568
They always had them from the get go. People need to stop letting these companies bend them over and fuck them under sheets with these shitty fucking cards.
>>
>>82650162
I would be happy with a moderately priced 1440p@60hz card right now. I went from an nvidia 560ti to an amd 380 and now 580 and it never cost me more than ~£200-250 and gave me solid performance for a while.
I still have the 380 but with a dead fan and another one rattling. I'm planning on fixing the fans because 380s are going on ebay for ~£160-180 which is only a little less than what I bought it for a 6 YEAR old card. The last few years have been insane.
>>
How though? I thought cards throttled before allowing themselves to overheat
>>
>>82650088
No FE cards have died, only EVGA cards died because their fan controller IC died and there was no caps problem, Nvidia fixed it with a driver update

STAY MAD, AYYMDPOORFAGS
>>
>>82650068
The article goes under the premise that only EVGA cards are dying, which isn't the case since there's a few reports of 6900XT dying too.

>>82650331
Badly implemented protection won't help you, that's why you see reports that have cards blackscreening once then dying after a reboot, the blackscreen is the protection doing it's job.

it's actually good practice to take a massive man dump on people excited for trash that degenerates the industry. They're called slaves that drag every other customer down because the standards have been lowered by them. They are complicit. This is part of the reason why it's honestly hilarious there's no consoles or gpus for sale anywhere. It's great. The gaming community is getting what it deserves for years of supporting trash that has no mod support, is bloated in size so it's the only thing you play, is riddled with Microtransactions, is built with psychological exploitation in mind, spies on you and sells your personal information, etc. And now, what little supply there is, burns. smells incredible

>>gaymers "trust the company" and expect it to just werk
I'd expect it to just work as a regular consumer
Of course the difference between me and gaymers is I don't create a cult of personality around a the brands that supply PC parts.
Companies like EVGA, Asus, MSI, corsair, etc can never do no wrong, they will never go out of business. No one will ever call them out on hardware that shits the bed, people will be angry for approximately 5 femto seconds until next gen comes around.

I guess this comes from the new generation of builders who treat their PC like the tuner car they never had and that general unreliability and breakage is just accepted as part of the cost of having a high-spec PC
>>
>>82631552
Why does EVGA still have the elite gamur reputation? That stopped being a thing after GTX 295... Asus surpassed them a long time ago.

EVGA is fucking shit terrible quality, but they have astronomically better customer support and respect than anyone else. That's why people keep going back to them.
