is 1000 bucks for a new t480s a good deal?
16Gb RAM, i7 8th gen, 500Gb SSD

For a t480s with those specs $500-600 is a good deal, $600-700 is decent for something with a 500gb ssd. Check ebay and sort sold auctions by recent.

libreboot *is* coreboot, it's a distribution of coreboot with pre-compiled ROMs for a few older thinkpads (X60/T60/X200/T400) that don't need blobs in order to function
>>
>>82024072
I think the X240 through X270 all used the same batteries, and I'm pretty sure the T440 through T480 did too. With older devices you'd be lucky to use the same battery in two consecutive models, because they changed the battery design a lot more often. For example, the X220 works with X230 batteries (though not the other way around) but X201 batteries are totally different.

Currently have a T420 (blaze it) and am overall happy with it except for the sub 1080p resolution and meager battery life.

Would the T440s be the ideal choice for me?
>>
>>82026795
No. The T440s will give no performance difference. Basically all the pre ryzen thinkpads from sandy bridge and above perform the same (except for igpu). Upgrade to a ryzen laptop.
>>
>>82026795
I wouldn't recommend it unless it's really cheap for you to do so. The keyboard will be different, the trackpad on the t440s sucks and needs replacing and you might still have to source a FHD screen for it.

Performance and battery life between them aren't much different here also.

Always replace the drive with a new ssd. A lot of these laptops are pushing 8 to 10 years of use, close to the original drive's end of life. Make sure to repaste the thermals as well. Over $100 for a thinkpad is highway robbery. Faggots like you have brought up the prices considerably. You used to be able to grab a busted X220 and throw a X230 mobo in it for under $100.

only buy from stablished sellers (+100 reviews, all or close to all positive)

if you are that worried filter so you only get refurbished items, this are mostly sold by companies who clean them and make sure they work properly

for older models expect the battery not to work properly (surprise, you will have to replace it). you might also want to upgrade the harddrive

>I’ve found a T480 with i5 8250U with 16GB ram and 512 SSD, is that good enough to last 3-4 years
Complete overkill for compsci if you are running linux.
I bought a new thinkpad with the lowest end i3 they had and 8GB of RAM 4 years ago and it's still holding up perfectly fine, see no reason why I won't get another 6+ years of out it at least.
People here are still running ancient thinkpads with old ass intel core duos, you really don't need high specs for programming and light web browsing on linux. If you are running wangblows 10 it's a completely different story.

Surely it makes more sense to have the trackpad aligned to where your hands are though?
I hate numpads on laptops because they offset the entire keyboard and make you type to one side, the trackpad is only a symptom of the bigger problem.
>>
>>82036235
The idea is that you have the laptop sat on a desk with the keyboard centered and the numpad off to the right, like a regular fullsize that happens to have a computer attached to it.

It makes the machine garbage for truly portable use yeah, but that's the idea, numpads on laptops really are stupid

Please tell me which of the above 2 laptops do you think has the better build quality. I couldn't find any evidence of one having better build quality than the other online.
I know these 2 laptops are almost similar (HP has slightly better graphics) but build quality is priority for me now.
Alternatively, if you think both these laptops are shit, do let me know why, because they're the only ones fitting my budget right now and are similar in price.
My third choice is this IdeaPad which is obviously the best in build quality:

https://www.amazon.in/Lenovo-IdeaPad-Windows-Graphics-81NG00BVIN/dp/B08JCMPPH3/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=ideapad+s540&qid=1623484811&s=computers&sr=1-1

But it has a 10th Gen processor whereas the other 2 have 11th Gen, also has worse graphics than the other 2.

Thanks in advance!

There have been rumors about manufacturers finally upgrading webcams to at least budget phone front camera territory due to working from home and the new reality of COVID so a decade of stagnating at 720p is finally ending and there are some laptops that have those today. One of the better ideas the industry didn't need to rip off Apple for where Apple will do the same thing soon too.

DDR5 is on the horizon so better iGPU performance is expected with Alder Lake mobile late this year. Don't expect AMD moving to Zen 3 and RDNA 2 with Rembrandt until next year. Other than that, you better hope the continuing trend of gluing shit together and soldered ram stops although I doubt it.

Repaste and clean the fan
And yeah these laptops sit at 40-45c depending on your ambient temp with the fan off, if you're running the cpu at max freq with turbo boost on you'll get fan spin on anything more intensive than writing a word document or reading a PDF

I keep my 450s at about 2ghz with turbo off most of the time and can do all the usual stuff, youtube etc. with lots of stuff open in the background just fine, I just click a different profile when I need the full capacity of the cpu

Are there ryzen 5500u based laptops with a T series quality chassis and thunderbolt 3 for $400 CAD?
>>
>>82050114
You serious? They just came out and cost 2.8k maplebucks. Nothing else in the market right now besides the HP probooks equivalents which will cost around the same will get you that. And I think Thunderbolt still isn't on AMD laptops. It's in like 1 AM4 desktop mobo though as an add in card. But yeahñ if you are paying that much money, you might as well get the 5800u/5850 option.

If you just want a laptop with a Ryzen 5500u you would have to come over here in the US where we had those Ideapads selling for 449 freeeom dollars. I don't know what other options you cunucks have but Asus had their laptops in Walmart around 500 USD or so.

He was pointing out that the T480 is significantly cheaper and superior in every other way other than processing than the alternative that anon had suggested you giga nonce

thinking of getting a latitude D630 to avoid the intel ME botnet, thinkpads are getting too expensive all over. should I get one of these for a daily driver?
>>
>>82050857
T61 with T9500 here, yes.
Middleton BIOS is obligatory for SATA2.
Mostly light browsing but i use it for the durability and reliability.

If you can get a better laptop, get it.
If you cant afford a better one, it works but dont expect much out it.

>outbid for a T430 by $1.00
>>
>>82051505
he probly outbit you by quite a bit. ebays autobid function works so that only the minimum needed to outbid you is placed.
so if your max bid is $1000 and the most someone else bids is $200 then ebay will auto place a bid at $201 and win you the auction

i thought ME was already there by that time

slightly less rubbish then E which isn't saying much

wasn't present in intel cpus or chipsets until 2008 iirc, and that laptop came out in 2007
>>
>>82051634
wasn't ebay, never knew that though. perhaps the site does the same thing though it shows your bid anonymously after placing. I don't get why sites let you do that.. maybe I'll get it next time
>>

core2 duo era was the last before intel ME was integrated into the cpu rather than the chipset

hey tpg, having a hard time with setting up my raspi 3 to flash the rom on my x220 for coreboot. I have all the hardware I need including the jumper cables and rom clip etc. Was wondering if someone had an updated guide without expired links to non existent web pages. I have tried using multiple guides to compile (pardon the pun) a working setup but I keep running into unavailable data through web pages that no longer exist. I'm not experienced but I can follow directions and use bash commands. I was also looking at Heads as an option to flash but there isn't enough documentation for me to fill in the cracks so to speak. Really scratching my monkey brain on this one. Any help would be great, thanks!

M91p and older yes.
M92 and newer kinda, propietary PSU fucks them up.
You can buy a 24pin to 10pin adapter but the PSU will never shut down if you turn the PC off in some models.

$184 is too expensive for a M83 without HDD.
Look for Thinkstations instead.

Since the used market is sourced from companies and government. Those can include law firms, hospitals, and other entities with sensitive information. Therefore a mere hard drive wipe is not up to standards, so they remove he harddrive for physical destruction. When they remove it, they can't be fucked to remove the caddies, and they all go in the shredder.
