>>82013097
The problem is not M1X chip itself, it's the Mini LED displays. iPad Pro's display has a blooming problem, probably Apple is working on this problem, and that's probably why M1X Macbook Pro's were delayed.
>>
The reason /fag/ hasn’t take off like freeshit and winjeet threads is because Apple gear doesn’t need constant, around the clock maintenance and repair. What is there to talk about?

Planned obsolescence in macOS Monterey.

Also, being from California, Monterey is one of the last places I'd name a macOS release after. Maybe the crackhead marketing team is more than just a lame dad joke.
>>
>>82013032
Any computer can use displaylink... You could also connect another GPU over thunderbolt.
People want real outputs, and the only reason apple doesn't give them to you is that they hate you and know you'll suck their cock even harder when they give you worse products.
>>
>>82013123
I don't think so, the bloom was already on the XDR display released 2 years ago, you can't easily fix the issue, it's a complex problem that comes with Mini-LED.
It doesn't bother me on my iPad, the bloom really only appears in dark rooms, I take that over OLED burn-in.
>>
>>82013213
I actually prefer the IPS display used on my Macbook compared to the OLED stuff on iPhones nowadays. Even when you turn off True Tone on the iPhone, it's noticeable more yellow compared to my Mac's display.
>>
>>82013192
>Planned obsolescence in macOS Monterey.
What do you mean?
>>
Is it too late to get a M1 MBP? I need a laptop for uni but I feel I'm gonna get cucked with a new model announcement the moment I buy it
>>
>>82013328
a globe somehow needs an M1 chip and not even the top of the line mac pros will get the feature
>>
>>82013327
OLED just simply isn't color accurate, so Mini-LED is the best you can get in that regard for now.
The new iPad Pro 12.9 looks like the Macbooks IPS display with OLED black levels when you use it in a light up room, the bloom only starts happening if it's darker and starts looking pretty bad in absolute darkness.
>>82013363
Just because x86 support for some gimmicky features isn't included in the first dev beta pretty much means absolutely nothing.
There also appeared a newly listed Intel powered Mac Pro in the XCode beta and Apple won't deny features to a new product, I bet my ass they will just add x86 support for those useless features in the upcoming betas.
>>
New iPhone vs secondhand/refurbished. On average, what's a better purchase?
>>
>>82013363
That's because most of the mentioned features requires AI stuff, and only M1 Macs have a neural engine.

>>82013489
Just buy an iPhone SE if you want to buy a cheaper iPhone.
>>
>>82013121
Beautiful work anon!

>>82013489
Depends on age.
If it's a newer model, then just buy it new, get AppleCare+, blah blah blah.
If it's older (Like an XR) then used is fine. I've bought plenty of used iPhones, it's better to get them from private sellers and have apple replace the battery then getting them from refurbishers, but still, $80 5c from Aliexpress is a good deal for what it is.

Anyone feel a bit technically let down by the WWDC vids so far?
Other years I feel like I've been able to get at least a couple dozen good vids to sit through, but this year there's little all I feel's worth a watch.
What's everyone's favourite talks so far been?
>>
>>82013097
Chances are this is just so the vid pops up for anyone searching for the M1x MacBook, not an indication that they're gonna actually announce it.
>>
>>82013340
Depends what you want out of your computer.
presumably the upcoming M1X isn't M1 2.0, but a higher performance, higher power version of the same.
So it's not like the M1 will be obsolete with the release of the M1X.
>>
>>82013614
I don't think I'll need something that constantly performs, as I'll be using it for mainly web browsing/coding. The thing is, I wanted to get something that really holds its ground so I can use it for the next 10+ years.
If the M1X is just a performance boost, I'll get a M1 for sure. But if it leaves the M1 way behind and the price is not that high I'd kinda regret it.
I'm probably getting a M1 regardless, thanks

I don't know about lasting 10+ years, new technology and all, but Apple does have a good record of keeping shit relevant for a long time, so they're as good a choice as anything else on the market, assuming you make sure to get a guarantee.
Apple (as well as many other companies like Lenovo) have this problem where their hardware is very nice IF it's assembled correctly, but it often isn't when you get it from the store so shit breaks, and then after sending it back under your guarantee you get something that's been duct-taped together correctly and lasts a long time.

From what I heard the M1X has more cores in general (and fewer of those cores are efficiency cores, 2 relative to the m1's 4, iirc), a LOT more GPU cores and supports more RAM than the M1, so it's not going to completely invalidate the M1 without paying the price both literally and in terms of power consumption.
Plus the M1 already has fairly impressive performance, I say it's more than enough for web browsing and programming (assuming you don't do anything super heavy, in which case you wouldn't use a laptop anyway)
My guess is that the M1X macbooks and the regular M1 ones will have the same relative price difference as i5 macbooks and i7/i9 ones.

Besides, no company is going to release a product which completely invalidates their own product in the same "generation", they'll gimp the M1X to make sure that doesn't happen if they have to.

How is safari compared to firefox? Is adblocking effective or must I install firefox for this purpose?
How difficult is the interface for someone coming from fagdroid tablets?
I'm not gonna return to using them because a samsung tablet I still have disappointed me thoroughly.
>>
>>82014020
>How is safari compared to firefox?
You're limited for choices because everything on iOS is forced to use the built-in webkit renderer. Browsers can be incredibly flexible with what they do with that renderer, but untimely they're all pretty similar.
>Is adblocking effective or must I install firefox for this purpose?
I hear Brave's the go-to for Adblock by default these days, safari doesn't really do much in my experience.
>How difficult is the interface for someone coming from fagdroid tablets?
You'll get used to the gestures eventually, major points are app settings, regardless of if native or 3rd party, are in the Settings app, apps are responsible for their own back buttons (but swiping from the right edge of the screen inwards is usually taken as a strong suggestion), and welcome to the world of quality over quantity when it comes to features.
Use shortcuts if you need ssh scripting otherwise WebSSH (not actually a web client) in lieu of a native terminal.
>I'm not gonna return to using them because a samsung tablet I still have disappointed me thoroughly.

Thanks m8.
The M1 iPad Pro can really handle a lot without even starting to stutter, but I think I could drain the battery in an hour with this if I didn't have it plugged in.
>>
Universal Control was the only thing I cared about from WWDC, since my mid 2015 MBP can't into Sidecar. Sure hope they won't find a convenient excuse to block older computers from using this too.
By the way, are there any free programs for sharing mouse and keyboard with a Windows PC? I don't wanna shell out 30 bucks for Synergy.
>>
>>82015626
They actually blocked sidecar because of the Intel iGPU that simply didn't support it for some reason, I don't remember the details.
There is a workaround and you can use it, but you only get pretty low resolution and artifacts with it, I tried this years ago with my gfs 2013 MBP.
>>
>>82015667
>because of the Intel iGPU
Aren't newer Intel Macs also using Intel iGPU's?
>>
Real shame how little the iPad Pro got for the 2nd year in a row. My 2018 Pro handles the beta with ease and will be able to hold out for that glass backed pro next year with a real redesign. I like how unified a lot of features are getting across the platforms but the nail in the coffin for iPad Pro EVER being a computer replacement was Apple’s demo of Universal Control. Never more clearly have they stated “you are meant to buy them all”
>>
>>82015626
May sound odd but I’ve been using the Logitech MX keyboard and mouse to swap back and forth between PC and Mac. Haven’t tried the file drag and drop feature but supposedly once you have the software set up on both computers it works fine.

Hell I’ve even been using the Logitech’s for gaming without any issues for months. So much for wireless professional devices being shit for gaming. Hasn’t stopped me from playing shooters one bit.
>>
>>82016304
It's not about the iGPUs in general, it's about the changes Intel did with the compatible models.
It also affects Hackintosh builds up to Haswell.

That's pretty neat, but it seems like the Logitech software is locked to their own products, and I'm not buying new stuff unless I explicitly need it.
Luckily I found this

Does _anybody_ know how to speed up macOS?
My brother handed me one of his old macbooks, so I decided to use it for software development. Compiling takes quite a while, and starting applications takes 2-5 seconds on my shitty wifi (less when turned off).
I've tried turning off SIP and it does make stuff open a bit faster, but applications and even my compiled programs still take quite a while.

Hi bro, I have a 2020 Intel MacBook Pro and the late 2020 MacBook Pro w/M1 and 16GB RAM.

I love my M1 but devs are being lazy AF porting code to run natively on Apple Silicon. A lot of the apps I use I’d need to run Rosetta 2 in order to use them on the M1… such as Audacity, NordVPN, any torrent app, any IRC app… you get the point.

You can wait for the next iteration of Apple Silicon. I don’t think this Intel to M1 transition will be like the PowerPC to Intel transition.

Sup /g/uise

I'm new to Macs, as I only have them at work and don't really know much about them.

I regularly have issues with anything related to video on my 2019 MacBook Pro:

About once a day, if I try to launch a video in Quicktime, in VLC, a Youtube video or a Meets meeting, I get a couple of video frames, and then everything freezes. Not the OS, but the browser tab if it's in a browser, or the app that's trying to read video.

I have to reboot the computer, and things get better for about 24h.

I haven't installed anything esoteric regarding video (codecs, video applications, nothing...)

I'm kinda lost here

Is this something somewhat widespread?

I'm at a loss here so I regularly try startup shortcuts to clear my SMC, PRAM, NVRAM, but nothing seems to solve the issue durably

Also my OS and everything I can is always up to date with the latest updates

Help?

I've never had these issues before Catalina, does that invalidate your diagnostic, or not at all?

Use pyenv for python. Don't let Homebrew handle it or else it becomes a big mess. Also make sure you download the Xcode command line tools so that you have all the expected tools for programming in C and C++.

Also consider using xhyve, the OS X port of bhyve, for virtualization. It's free and better than parallels in any way if you want to spin up VMs. Docker also uses it iirc for containers.

Impossible. Parallels has propietary graphics drivers, propietary sound drivers and many good things to make your vm experience perfect.
Spaces support, and even that feature where you can put windows from a windows vm in the Mac's desktop.
I bet xhyve is like qemu.
At least try to make it like Q. It was a qemu fork with coreimage, coreaudio direct support and many other good features.

Go to System Report and see what's reported under the Power section. It's hard to tell what exactly is wrong, but if you have less than 1,000 or so charging cycles and it recommends service, then I'd say go for it, because it's probably detecting a pretty bad issue with your battery.

Battery replacements range between $129 and $199.

Apparently the base iPad will stick with LCD, the Air will go with OLED and the Pro with miniLED. As to why, I figure that the Air will be mainly for entertainment so OLED will be for those who want true blacks and such, while Pro is meant for long term professional use and burn in may be a real issue on a device that can go over 1000 nits and miniLED doesn't burn in so that one's used instead.

Went to the Apple store to test the new keyboard on the M1 yesterday
After being harrased by the security guy for wearing a neck gaiter (aparently Apple is still quaking at the knees over the meme virus) I spent 30 or 45 seconds typing and here's my thoughts:
It's an obvious improvement over the butterfly disaster of the 2016-2019 models but still lacking in comparison to their older keyboards on the 2008-2015 models. I honestly don't understand why they choose to continue to skimp out on something so essential.
No one is buying Apple computers for the software we buy apple for (what was once expected to be) superior build quality and longevity of their products. I feel that Apple has lost the plot as far as their laptop computers are concerned and looks like I'll be sticking with my 2012 MBP for another year at least until those numbskulls can give me what I want: A laptop with the BEST

The scissor switches are fine, but I do want to see USB-A back. I dont use HDMI or SD cards but having those slots would be really nice anyway, since I never know when I will want to plug in to a display or projector, or if I ever need to insert an SD card. Given that the latest iMac finally got 1080p webcam, I hope the same happens for the upcoming Macbooks. I'm still a bit skeptic of the M1 being better in graphics than the AMD GPUs in Intel Macs.
>>
>>82028561
I think the ones who lost the plot were Jony "CWC Autism stare" Ive and the old design team.
The Macbook peaked at around 2012/2013 but they continued obsessing about minimalism and thin design to the point where it started ruining the complete lineup.
If the rumors are true the redesign will include USB-A + HDMI ports and an SD card reader, which gives me hope for the rest of the machines, including the keyboard.

Also I don't work for Apple and never have, and I don't think I'll ever get hired anyway, and that's fine with me. Where does that put me?
>>
Realistically, for how much longer do you think the 6S will get major iOS versions? Considering the iPhone 5 with A6 got to iOS 10 and the iPad mini 4 with A8 is getting iPadOS 15, I think the 6S will be further supported for at least half as long as this gap, rounded up since I don't think Apple will drop support halfway through a major OS version again. So 3 more years at least, or up to iOS 18 at least.

There's also a DXVK so realistically any apple porter can just lob those two guys in and boom DX on Vulkan (or they can write a straight vulkan or metal renderer... like idk you have no idea how little code actually revolves around the graphics api if you make your own engine (people using other engines are at their mercy, ie., Unreal or Unity or MonoGame)

Apple has become very good at providing updates for its Apple Silicon devices. I think there's a very good chance the M1 Macs will be supported for very long.

Early intel macs were gimped right out the gate because the core solo was rushed to market, that doesn’t seem to be the case for M1

MacOS good, screen and touchpad very good. M1 is experimental but also good. Ideally wait for the M2s which should be coming in the next few months
