>>

not a bios issue, ram these days and the one you have is dual channel. just 2x it and you know what speeds you are running.

For example your 800Mhz is actually 1600mhz in dual channel (800Mhz 1 stick +800Mhz another stick)

it's ECC, and there's 18 sticks in the system. All channels are properly populated. It's a bios issue. In order to utilize all the ram, I have to run it in extended mode instead of enhanced, because enhanced mode only sees 94 gigs.

Heavily modified AW 17 R1 here.
>>
>>81457430
Shit didn't see you, I'm guessing you're either using an M17x R4 or M18x R2, a man of culture I see.
>>
>>81458457
M18xR2, thank you. But I'm a bit disappointed in the requirement to run the 1070 under Optimus so I'm working on trying so other things out. I want to see if Linux can run the 1070 explicitly and I'm looking to run a 980m on another M18xR2 as well. I need to be able to output 4k from the mini-DP and Optimus doesn't allow this.
>>
>>81458531
Yeah, one of the big issues with the M18x R2. You could always buy 2 980M's (2 of them scale together to perform almost the same as 1 1070) and use Prema's 200 watt vBIOS on both of the 980M's to be able to overclock the shit out of them, and you would be able to run the 120hz display without optimus iirc.

What 1070 do you have if you don't mind me asking. Do you have the Dell standard MXM 3.0B one, or do you have the 3.1B MSI variant?
>>
>>81458779
The unit I've been fighting with to get working with the 980m ended up having a bad motherboard at least at the MXM slots so instead of buying a new mobo I just got another whole unit for just a little more which shoyld be here in a week. The one I got also comes preloaded with a 980m so I should be able to just pop in the one I have on hand already, hopefully. Do you know of a 120Hz display for the M18x? I couldn't find anything in my searches. But yeah I really want to hotrod these two units out and make them earn the /g/ Certified Toaster stickers I've been saving.

The 1070 is Dell MXM 3.0B yes. Didn't have to mod the heat sink like I hear the other one requires.

Also if you know anything about component-level repair for the MXM slots on the bad mobo let me know. I'd love to save it and maybe use the 680m SLI I swapped out for the 1070 in the other unit.

>>
>>81458892
Ahhh I'm an idiot. You can't have a 120hz display on the m18x R2 as there is no eDP connector like there is on the 17 R1.

Are you getting another M18x R2 or an 18 R1 (also known as the M18x R3)?

Yeah, you need to mod the heatsink in order to get the MSI 1070 to work. There is a guy on Ebay who sells pre-modded heatsinks for the M18x R2 and M18x R3 that have the area cut out for the MSI card. They are also good as they usually have 6 heatpipes instead of 3. He custom makes them and they are ALL copper which is good for heat dissipation, his name is Cicichen, or just look up Alienware M18x R2 6 heat pipes.

I couldn't really help you there as MXM slots are very complex. Your best bet is taking it into a shop sadly.

>i dont know why someone would need a piece of information so therefore it has no reason to exist

>>
>>81459315
I'm getting a 3rd M18xR2 because I figured $1k for a whole new unit+980m was better than $400 for the mobo alone.

I'm an EE and probably just as capable at fixing this as any shop in my area if I just had the schematics. Otherwise I guess I'd have to take the bad one and a good one to the scope and compare signals which is a huge pain.
>>
>>81459368
Alright good, avoid the M18x R3's like a plague, they tended to literally blow up or short as the power delivery on them were terrible compared to the R2.

Oh nice, schematics would definitely help, I just don't know where you could get them. I'm assuming you have been on the NBR Forums, so I would probably just make a thread there asking if anyone knew anything.

>>81459302
You are right, but a single 980m with the 200 watt vBIOS overclocked can beat a 1060 and perform closely to a 1070.

That's okay, I don't build PCs as a hobby. My PC in itself is not my hobby, but a tool for me to enjoy my hobbies.
But there is nonetheless still a value consideration when building a PC despite the current market, as the price brackets have all just moved up alongside each other. It's not as though only one CPU or GPU is hideously expensive, they all are. The good value options still remain less awful than the bad value options such as the 3090 or 5950x.

Anyway I'm glad I got a fairly high-end system built before the market went to hell.

Yeah back in my day 500-550w units where perfectly adequate for a mid range system like yours, you went to 650w if you plan to OC or had some high end component.
750w was the absolute max for a single GPU system with all high end components, after that your just blowing money.

Why people suggest 750w units for even midrange is mind boggling.
>>
>>81460614
For me, it's upgradeability. Not really THAT much more in cost from a 550-750, and means you are sorted for the next decade. If you want to upgrade to more demanding hardware, you are already sorted.

ok I'll bite
RAM is dual-channel - so if you're running 3600MHz, it'll show up as 1800 (1800x2 = 3600)
So if you see older builds running 1200 or something, it's actually 2400. Just an example.
>>
>>81463425
what is this, some kind of Double Data Rate notation?
>>
>>81463425
Just to clarify it's not that it's dual channel but the way data is encoded it can carry double the data per clock cycle, hence double data rate or DDR.
3600mhz would be the effective speed when the clock rate if the DRAM module is 1800mhz

fuck speccy

anyways.
I have 32gb of 3600 speed ram in my pc rn, but I have an extra 18gb of 3200 speed ram from the same manufacturer sitting next to me in a box.

Should I run them together for 48GB of ram? How would the speed mismatch effect anything?

Tbh I have literally no use for this much ram but I have it and it was free so whats a man to do.
>>
>>81463501
The RAM as a whole will more than likely run at the max speed of the slower kit.
You might have to enter in timings and speed manually
>>
>>81463527
seems like either way the rams not going to be used since I have like, 0 use cases that would lead to 48GB of ram being used up unless I want to boot up the old clover version of AI dungeon and test my story telling abilities again.

What would you anons do if you had too much ram
>>
>>81463319
>overclock
why would I give up stability for numbers that just look good and don't really make an real world difference?
>>
>>81456703
How
>>
>>81463562
No such thing as too much RAM desu
I bought 32GB at the behest of the retards over at /pcbg/ just because I didn't want to downgrade from the 24GB of my Haswell system

Should have bought more before RAM spiked like 50 fucking percent
>>
>>81463053
It's DDR3200, so it's clocked at 1600MHz.
>>
>>81463574
Did you know that it's possible to get a stable overclock? Shocking I know
>>
>>81463319
>who can't overclock their system
Does it really matter? Is this some kind of contest? Do we actually need the extra performance?

>>
>>81463840
It's free performance. I think of this as a reverse idiot tax.
>>
>>81463756
If it was completely rock stable it would have been done at the factory
OCing is always a concession to stability, it's just that some are willing to take the hit because they don't care if their PC does something fucky once in while.
>>
>>81463891
Sounds like you don't understand how the manufacturing process works. It's okay tho, this thread is full of brainlets just like you
>>
>>81463899
Sounds like you don't know what a truly good working PC is
Even the mildest of IMC overclocks can cause a render to fail, of course that probably doesn't matter to you since your PC is a hobby
>>
>>81463873
But it's only useful if you actually use it.
Like, being able to remove the speed limiter in your car is only useful if you can drive at those speeds anyway.
We're sitting at a point where most of the benefit in increased performance is in highly threaded loads at maximum load. Single threaded loads are decreasing.

And on top of this, our CPUs are now overclocking themselves.
Back in the Core 2 days, the base clock was the base clock. You got a 2.4GHz CPU and it was 2.4GHz.
Nowdays you've got boost clocks, which is just the CPU overclocking itself within thermal and power limits. It's not overclocking itself to the absolute limits, but it does a decent job if you have adequate cooling.

Needs more ram. Another 16 should do the trick. My PC was recently upgraded from a ryzen 3600 and a GTX 1080. I have a better job now so I went nuts.

I had to sell my 5700 XT because of some bad times, currently using a shit-tier HD 3450 I pulled from a junker PC. I miss the fucker and I had to sell it for scalper price but it's kept things bearable for two months. I would've kept mining on it but said expenses were a little more immediate than I had hoped.
At least it runs Factorio so I should be good for the next long while.
>>
>>81464805
I was testing some OC settings, I was having stability issues and I've been too lazy to bump the timings back up.

Sell it.

Put it in a different system.
Eat it on a hot dog bun with mustard.
Slit your wrists with it.

My Asus zephyrus rtx 3070 is almost in my hands and my future specs are; Ryzen 9 5900hs, 16 gb of ram, 1 tb pcie ssd, rtx 3070.

But is sad that the new dell rtx 3080 is a little faster than this zephyrus. Fuck. But also is to learn programing in deeply so the not too low specs will keep me away from playing video games.

Ah shit, thanks bro. But it's fine, I'm not too far into the shitter. I got the money but it's just not worth rebuying a graphics card that can run games the way I want them to right now. I might pick up a slightly more modern card like the GT 710 or whatever's cheap so that I can actually use my 1440p monitor though.
Still, thanks again for your generosity.
