>Pros of MacPorts
- Biggest selection of packages.
- Supports PowerPC, Intel, and Apple Silicon. This means it'll work on your older Macs running OS X and the latest M1 Macs.
- Updated frequently and well-documented

>Pros of Homebrew
- Biggest webdev collection of all four
- Apple Silicon support
- It just works

>Pros of Fink:
- APT-based. Useful if you come from Debian-based distros.
- All binary packages

>Pros of Nix:
- Cross-platform and portable
- Hermetic builds

Work just issued me an M1 MBP. I'm about to CONSOOM once it arrives hot damn
>>
>>81042669
You can change the associated email address, sure. Regarding why you can't use the iCloud email as the ID; Apple IDs stem from iTunes, so they didn't always include an email address I guess? It is weird for a first time thing for sure.
>>
>>81042736
I just swapped my 16" Intel MBP for one at work too. I'm the Mac admin so I needed to actually start testing on these things. It's a hell of a lot better than the 16".
>>
>>81042843
Not him, but I use a 16" for personal use. Would you say the difference is substantial?

I might sell my 16" and wait for the M2 or something
>>
>>81042853
It's not particularly substantial in terms of my day-to-day performance. Basically it feels the same, except faster at some things and the fan NEVER turns on, whereas the 16" was a small jet. Also the battery life is just fucking nuts —I can go a full day of meetings, etc without having to charge it. The 16GB RAM ceiling is the biggest issue with these things right now. 16GB is enough for me 99% of the time, but I'm pushing it without really trying. But as they say, unused RAM is wasted RAM; but an 8GB machine would be paging to the SSD constantly.

Hello mac user frens
Any one wanna tell me what the benefits are of using a Mac? I've used one only a few times I'm too autistic to get used to the opposite mouse keys and apps that I have no idea what they do.
What makes it better than windows or any random linux distro?
>>
>>81042927
Damn son. I honestly cannot fucking wait for the 16" M1/M1x or whatever they're putting out.

I've got a based 2015 13" that I use as well that I can switch back to while I wait.
Don't want to end up with three macs. I already got enough fuckin Thinkpads

your iCloud email should be your ID. unless you registered twice?
>>
>>81042982
>What makes it better than windows or any random linux distro?
if you want games, I'd be the first person to tell you to stay on Windows. Otherwise, it's a better more integrated package (especially using across different apple devices) for productivity, development, or getting a UNIX fix even (one that works and you don't tinker with at least).
>>
>>81043123
Can you change your @icloud.com, ID/Mail address?
>>
>>81043394
Afaik no
>>
>>81043123
No, I made my Apple ID a million years ago, it's a hotmail address. I also have an iCloud email.
>>
>>81044464
it sounds like you have two IDs then. the iCloud based one and the old one. maybe you could merge them? or get apple support to do that? would be a better thing in the long run.
>>
>>81044532
>>81043123
No, I have one Apple ID. The sign-in email address is a hotmail address and it has an iCloud email address as part of being an iCloud account. I couldn't create an Apple ID with an email address that didn't exist yet. I made this well over 10 years ago, it's not an unusual situation. There's nothing to merge, they are one account.

Alright frens considering an iphone as my next phone, specifically the iphone 12 mini.

i got a question about notifications though
>it's 4:00 pm
>i go to 2 hour meeting, forget phone at desk
>i get an sms at 4:15 pm
>get back to my desk at 6:00 pm

since iphones dont have notification LED's, is there a notification reminder that'll periodically give me a vibration that there are messages that i havent read yet?
>>
>>81049548
Basically no, you do get a 2nd vibrate shortly after the first at around 4:17pm. the notification will be shown on the lock screen and is likely to be put on top and minimizing others like twitters (depends on your settings and presence of other apps, stock apps tend to have higher priority).

without the notification LED or periodic vibrate, I suppose the raise-to-wake feature will catch your attention of unread sms when u get back at 6
>>
>>81049678
thank you
>>
>>81049548
There's a hidden option for LED notifications (using the flash I guess), but I've never used it.

Me? I wouldn’t even buy one. However, normies haven’t caught on yet so you better sell it quick. I sold all my Intel Mac stuff last October. Very soon (April) the 16” Apple Silicon MacBook Pro’s will drop and you’ll be really fucked.

I bought the MacBook Air (2020, M1) w/16 GB. Pro Tip: use the educational portal and save a couple of hundred, Apple aren’t checking... at least not in Ireland.

I have an i9 and an i7 from work, they sound like fucking F16 fighter jets taking off and my M1 smokes them both.
>>
>>81053209
Yeah, My 16" i7 is chugging hard driving this 4k monitor. Well, that, and I think I'm better suited to an air. I'm putting up the CL ad after work today.

Do you think I can get like $1700 USD for this thing? I think that's a fair price. I only paid $1400 for it, but that's a longggg story.
>>
>>81053235
I wouldn’t know... I would take whatever you can get. All I know is they’re sitting stagnant on eBay at those prices. Make yourself super competitive and you’ll find some girl who just wants a MacBook Pro and doesn’t care what’s powering it (and probably won’t ever update the OS).

That's what I'm counting on -- people who don't give a shit about the transition from i*tel to ARM.

>>
>>81053305

Ordered my M1 back in January and got it early February.

I value battery life and I don’t see the next, more powerful, Apple Silicon iteration being better on battery life.

That said, if I like the next thing better I’ll just buy it: I’m rich.

I work on a helpdesk also, and we have a few Mac only customers. My coworkers treat it like they just hit a landmine when they call in. I'd recommend setting up a macOS virtual machine if you can. Just play around in it and get familiar with the menus. Learn shortcuts.
>>
>>81058457
I wouldn't sell anyone on just macOS. maybe 20 years ago, but it's more about the phones and the convenience of their integrated services (i.e. the ecosystem). then macOS to compliment that. but if you do want a desktop friendly UNIX, Macs don't disappoint. it's not tinker friendly, but "it just works".
>>
>>81060868
>it's not tinker friendly, but "it just works"
That's the beauty of Linux honestly. You can get an "it just works" OS and never touch the terminal if you want to, but still on the same distro just crack open the hood if you feel like it.
>>
>>81060888
I guess what you want to just work is different across users too, one's mile mileage will vary. I don't think disk encryption is that straightforward on either windows or linux. even with ms making it easier by uploading the key to an ms account. but it's so transparent on Macs I don't even think about it beyond one button.
>>
>>81060957
