built in 2014, survived the psu exploding. when should i build a new one? this thing stinks

>>79687797UPGRADE TO AN SSD!that i3 is pretty slow too. you could upgrade to an i7 broadwell (or haswell) with 8 threads will help you out. GPUs are pretty crazy right now but look for a rx 570 or 1650/1060.
>>79685020pieced together for $550 from local individuals
Got an RX 570 that I use for macOS in here too but have it disabled for Windows.
Do I get more hard drives for hoarding or 12GB 3060 for deep fake porn?
There's never a good time to upgrade.
>>79688354deep fake porn
>>79685039same except ryzen 5 2600

>>79689890keep it till next gen is out. 4k isnt really reachable with higher graphic settings, so i bet your running 1440p. if you're running 4k or want to upgrade, look out for a proper deal on a 3080. dont spend more than MSRP for it unless you don't care about cash that much

yes I am poor and stupid thanks
>>79690334How is having a recent 8cores on a good mobo with a good 1080p GPU is stupid and poor?I mean you could do better with RAM, better screen and more storage but it's a nice little rig. You'll be able to upgrade to a top tier zen3 cpu in a couple of years when the prices drop so that's pretty smart
>>79690216may keep an eye on it regardless, its free performance in many cases for AMD's solution, Intel shouldnt lack behind much and see some uplifts too
>>79688564>i5-4690kmy brudda, when is it time to upgrade?
>>79690413Thanks bro.I just know how 4channers like to dump on people for minute little issues, I was preemptively assuming there'd be a "hurr ur rig is trash" comment. It's the first computer I built myself and so-far I'm pretty happy with it.
At work right now. I actually do some extent of CAD modelling on this crummy heap. Replacements on the way though, installation only delayed until further notice because of the pandemic. Not looking forward to Win 10.
>>79690927I wasn't looking forward to Win 10 either but it's really not so back once you tweak it a bit. I removed Cortana and all of the in-menu ads and annoying start menu tiles and it doesn't really bother me now. Still... I long for a simpler time.
>i5 m560>8gb ram>1280x800>128gb ssd>x201

>>79691821>upgrading every genWhy?
The only real issue I have with this laptop would be the 768p panel, but honestly I don't mind it one bit at 14", and I don't really need great colors or contrasts for word processing and translation work. If anything, the fact that it's kinda dull and washed out makes it easier on the eyes when working on documents with a white background for extended periods of timeThat little dual core i7 is pretty beastly for a U series chip
AM3+ is a dead end, and upgrading it any further would basically require assembling a brand new PC. Still, it's good enough for Minecraft and weeb VNs/JRPGs.
>>79687428>that RAM speed on Intelwhy
>>79689851Emulation & compilation reasons mostly. I also like to play games sometimes, so a 1650s is fine.
RTX 3080 soon. Also, is there any tangible benefit to getting an X570 board over a B450, other than having an extra m.2 slot and a few extra SATA ports?
>>79687618How are the temps? Heard the 5800X PBO temps are high as fuck.
>>79693527PCIE Gen 4
gentoo with pci passtrough
never going to upgrade below 14nm
My're specs.I sorta miss having a massive bang-for-the-buck PC, though. My last PC I sold for more than it cost to build even after ~5 years of use. This one only has maybe $400 bucks saved off new -- less if you specced a lower tier X570 mobo.
>>79693730w-what's the n stand for
>>79693750Remember when Europe sued Microsoft for bundling Internet Explorer with Windows? This is the result.Windows N doesn't come preinstalled with a few things, like Windows Media Player.
>>79693527Not all X570, but some support two PCIE x16 slots (running x8 each) direct to CPUAnd X570 has PCIE 4 chipset lanesBasically only useful for multiple graphics cards and PCIE drives
Should I upgrade to 3060 for 600 usd?

>>79693916I feel so sorry for you.
>>79693694>4000 MHz>1.34 VHow?
Recently got the CPU. 1080 still performs well on 1440p
>my pc is already obsolete>lemme guess, you NEED more?
>>79694005It's a 1600. Does it matter? He's still slower than an i7 4790 that will run on sub 1V.
>>79694005I dont know, I am too scared to upgrade my motherboard because this overclock might not work anymore. Has been running like this for 2 years now on the stock cooler
>>79694106That's crazy. My 1700X can barely do 3.8 Ghz at 1.35 V. I know 6 cores is easier to overclock than 8 but still.

AMD corelets btfo
>>79685020Still can game at 1440p with little hassle. Convince me to upgrade.
Probably gonna get a new laptop soon.

You could've done B350/B450 and spent the difference on a good SSD.>>79693029That must run like ass, especially with the 5500 XT running at PCIe 3.0 x8.>>79693527Better VRM, more layers on the mobo so better memory overclocking. I've also seen lots of people having weird issues on their PC with PCIe 4.0 enabled though.>>79695618Broadwell is always a strange thing to see.>>79695619Yeah, that's good. My brother got one of those drives right after they came out and it got so fucking slow after a month. Talking under 100MB/s. He got the firmware updated eventually but it never ran near advertised speeds again.
Do I win something?
A nice upgrade from my A8-6600k and RX570
>>79695639you're absolutely correct when it comes to gaming but i just wanted more cores
>>79695690xmp is disabled. overclock your ram for free performance. haswell can do 2400++
>>79695797He could just have really old memory. I'm running 1066 on Skylake.
>>79695690>no SSD>8GB RAM>XMP not enabledYes, here's your prize.>>79695843It clearly says it has a 1600MHz XMP profile.
>>79695779Yup, I would've built a new machine this year if I didn't have to replace my old GTX 980 last year. It died on me and I ended up replacing it with the 5700 XT. I used it with a 1080p 60hz monitor for a while, but I finally upgraded to a 1440p 144hz monitor and I'm still running stuff like a champ. Averaging 115-120fps in Doom Eternal on Ultra Nightmare. Granted, not every game is as well optimized.
>>79695857why torture yourself with low framerate? drop the settings
>>79690071Wasn't AMD's resizable bar implementation available only with AMD CPUs?
>>79695850>It clearly says it has a 1600MHz XMP profile.oop
>>79695954Motherboard manufacturers quickly implemented it on their own and exposed AMD's bullshit.
>>79695951Because I literally can't tell the difference between 120fps and 144fps so I'd rather have it look prettier. I feel like when you hit around 120hz, it's hard to make out the difference at higher frames. That's why I feel 1440p 144hz is the sweet spot. On a 27in monitor, I can't tell the difference between 1440p and 4k.
>>79695984It needs to be supported both on the GPU and and the Motherboard though. If the drivers don't implement it, it doesn't work. I can see AMD being petty enough to do block it since they kinda advertised SAM as a big thing.
>>79693576Runs perfectly fine on my NH-12s. Never throttles under full load. Quite unless your maxing out more than half the cores (even then it's a noctua so still pretty quite). It's at ambient temp when idle. Normal loads don't get past 60C
