When I first started using Android, my MP3 player application of choice was Apollo. I am still using Apollo. It has no ads, costs nothing, and is free as in freedom. You should be able to install it through F-Droid.

The problem with these FOSS apps is that they all have similar navigation and it's barely serviceable.I remember spending a full week downloading every damn player on the store and all of them just either lacked features or were god awful to use so I stuck with BlackPlayer until I bought Poweramp on sale.

I'm surprised I haven't seen someone list Shuttle. I got Shuttle+ for free through the Amazon App Store a few years back, looks a little tacky colour wise, but the UI is good and supports every file type I've thrown at it (mp3, aac, flac, and opus)
