Is there an excuse to use Xfeces when MATE exists?
>>79681322cute mouse
I have no idea what XFCE is or does sorry.
Yes. XFCE is XFCE. MATE is Gnome 2. If I'm installing XFCE my goal is to use XFCE, not Gnome 2.

>>79681322a FUCKING RAT
>>79681322It never breaks so I never have a reason to change.
I like using XFce because I don't like GNOME
>>79681348You don't belong on /g/
>>79681322nothing better than XfFCE and I3wmchange my mind
MATE + Compiz is the ultimate DE experience.
>>79681916Just so you know: before FOOTfags decided to make gnome3 that was the default desktop experience on GNU plus Linux.
>>79681322Years ago mate was dogshit, no customization and retarded UI. Xfce permits you to set everything as you wish. Has mate improved since the last 7 years ?
>>79681829>
>>79681999What? MATE is arguably the most customizable DE.
Gnome was almost dead when ubuntu first came out. Noobs really liked the orange and brown color scheme, and a new generation of footfags was born. Like so many bad things, it's ubuntu's fault.Truly the distro of bad choices.
>>79681322oh shittttt a ratttt
>>79681942Honestly though, I unironically can't find a flaw in MATE + Compiz. It still feels modern, polished, and feature complete. With expo and scale plugins, I can see all open windows/workspaces at the same time, just like GNOME 3. How is this not the default GNU/Linux DE anymore?
KDE has the best ui and the best suite of applications. Nothing else comes close.

>>79681829Lurk moar>>79683050>uses Lumina*has a light environment with no bs*>>79681322No, xfeeces is a bunch of zoomers who regurgitate other peoples opinion, stack xfeeces up to any other light de such as LXDE, MATE, Lumina, or TDE (lxqt isn't ready for use yet but I'm excited for it) and you'll have several times more stability, configurability, and lightness
>>79683147>xfeeces is a bunch of zoomersits literally the boomer DE. its one of the oldest and the few people that develop it are giga boomers.

>>79681322i dont use any of them and just use openbox, no panel, no desktop icons, just a plain dark grey screen and a rightclick menu for apps
>>79681322MATE is heavy as fuck.
>>79683794Sorry forgot my name
>>79683809MATe uses less RAM than Xfce.
>>79683794KDE > Cinnamon > Xfce > not using a DE > GNOME
>>79683821Np senpai
>>79683944RAM isn't the only resource. For example, you can have 64GB of RAM and GNOME will still stutter because it's CPU-heavy and GPU-heavy.
>>79681916Why in the world would I want wobbly windows? I just want my shit to work and be fast. All the fancy gimmicks can fuck off.
>>79683988
>>79683988There is no such thing in GNU/Linux world. Either your shit lags or it lacks features. Possibly both.
>>79684073That's what's crazy, it's open source, there's gotta be someone out there who could just make it look normal and function. Why does every distro have to try and make it flashy and buggy? What's wrong with it just doing what it's supposed to do?
>>79681916I remember installing compiz to do the workspace cube and never used it again.
>>79684142You do realize Compiz has a bunch of useful stuff and not just flashy effects, right?
I use sway as my wm with a mix of gnome, xfce4 and KDE applications. Don't use DEs, choose the best features from every of them and make the ultimate DE yourself
>>79684176>useful stuffName one.
>>79684212ScaleExpoGridShow mouseDim InactivePlace WindowsWindow Rulesand more
>>79683050Cinnamon is the heaviest DE. When the desktop environment uses more RAM than the web browser something is going wrong.
>>79681362>MATE is Gnome 2MATE has been GTK3-based for a while now brah.
>>79684098I had an idea to make most simplistic Windows-like DE that had only most basic features but also wasn't ugly as hell, but Xorg is dying and Wayland is a clusterfuck of demon's abortion software. Even just for writing most basic toolkit I have to go through such shitfuckery, it just isn't worth it. I could do my own tweaks, but it would enslave me into eternal maintenance since I can't simply pack it into executable and expect it to work the same for everyone else.Icons. They are most important aspect of consistency in your desktop. Have you seen how they work? You create a separate icon for any desktop shortcut there is. Instead of desktop shortcuts linking themselves to a basic set of icons you just have THOUSANDS of the same icon for any application there is, Keepass, KeepassXC, KeepassX would have 3 separate icons that you have to create manually in your icon pack. It's insane. Now, if you go for a separate distro that tries to fix shit like this, you constantly have to deal with repo maintainers, your own maintenance, developers and their moronic decisions.Libraries update every time, they constantly break compatibility, hardware acceleration sucks ass. I mean, if it was possible to fix fundamentally broken shit that Linux is, people would already do that. Instead it just stays at one place, stuck somewhere in early 2000s. When people say that GNU/Linux is a server OS, they are right, it's not user-centered by design and there is no millionaire around there who won't mind to hire a huge team to fix it for free.
>>79683807>no panelHow you even use that thing? What happens to minimized programs, how you switch windows efficiently, how do you drag-n-drop to window that is behind another, don't you need a clock, battery indicator, etc?
>>79684264>Cinnamon is the heaviest DEYou must be using it with a shitty configuration or a shitty distro then.On login, Cinnamon consumes roughly 600MB RAM on my Thinkpad with Intel integrated graphics, and 700MB RAM on Precision with an NVIDIA GPU. This is under Fedora, with a good amount of applets, extensions and startup programs too, so I could get it significantly lower if I wanted to.I have observed similar RAM usage with Cinnamon under Linux Mint as well, on a shitty Acer laptop with Intel integrated graphics too.
>>79684264GNOME RAM usage is over 1GB. It's heavier than windows.
>>79681916WOW ANIMATIONS!!!!!!!Installing it RIGHT NOW BRO!
i like it :)
i actually like gnome but then again i use pop!os
>>79681916that looks gimmicky as shit
>>79684264>Cinnamon is the heaviest DELol no, unless you are still living in 2013. The heaviest DE is Gnome, then XFCE/Cinnamon.Even Plasma is more lightweight than Gnome, while offering more customization out of the box. The absolute state.
>>79681916>*wobble wobble wobble*sure is 2008 in here
Just use LXQT you pussy.
>>79681322I've tried both and Xfce seemed more reliable and lightweight than Mate. Xfce's customization is enough for me, so I went with it.
>>79683312>lxqt is literally just openbox
Just use dwm
just use VT
>>79683050>CinnamonSlow because wm is a fork of an old version of Mutter with almost zero development
>>79681322I want to like XFCE but I can't.
