that stupid shoulder camera zeos uses gives me nausea
>power outage for a second, bad weather>always think "Shit. Did it affect my headphone's sound quality?"What do I need to protect my amps and headphones from outages? I can't imagine the $20 surge protectors everyone has really do anything, do they?
You can divide headphone listers into two categories, boardly speaking.1. Those who highly value audio quality2. Those who don't value audio quality that muchThe first group will quickly move into mid-fi and eventually find their way into hi-fi and one day into an endgame system once they can afford it. The second will just float around lo-fi and sometimes the entry level of mid-fi. And to remind everyone:Lo-fi .. < $150Mid-fi .. $300-$700Hi-fi .. > $800

>>79671563You can divide headphone listers into two categories, boardly speaking.1. Those who highly value audio quality2. Those who don't value audio quality that muchThe first group will quickly move into transparent DAC amps and reach an endgame system once they can afford the $200 it costs. The second will just float around in audiophool tweaks and retardation like $5000 amps that perform worse than $100 devices. And to remind everyone:$200 is all you need to achieve transparent source gear. Less even. Always look at measurements before purchasing. That "upgrade" will likely be a downgrade.
>>79671604Is it useless or did you just not enjoy learning you listen to lo-fi?
>>79671668$200 using the latest electronics will be low-distortion and quiet but very flat, lifeless, horrible dynamics and generally a bottom-tier experience.

How much resolution am I missing by not using the SDR mod with my HD800? Does the 6khz peak really obscure the resolving ability of the driver?
>>79671804you can just EQ it down if it bothers you
>>79671702I know you must be listening to an Atom or some other toy you were marketed with $100nlo-fi headphones. So you probably listen to the worst electronica and metal rock imaginable. When you go up the ladder of high end audio your tastes change to reflect the greater enjoyment better system bring.
>>79671809The HD800 has something fucky going on with its earcup reflections/acoustics that make EQing a bandaid solution, or am I totally wrong? For some reason I'm not detecting this so called obnoxious treble across varied genres with very few electronic recordings as an exception. But I'm guessing that's because I don't have a "real" amp - a USB 2.0 interface, the Motu M2. Or maybe my ears are messed up. I notice that the sound signature of my 800 changes a lot, with seemingly no changes in the source.

>>79671924Nothing in its CSD indicates the 6K resonance is anything out of the ordinary. It can be fixed with EQ. If you look at the CSD for M1060 - that's something that can't be fixed with EQ. >For some reason I'm not detecting this so called obnoxious treble across varied genres with very few electronic recordings as an exception. You may not be treble sensitive. >I notice that the sound signature of my 800 changes a lot, with seemingly no changes in the source. They have very large cups, and the headphone's sound is dependent on position. Put it on differently and you'll get slightly different sound.
>>79671454Has anyone done the SHP9500 cup mod?I'm printing my own, but in the meanwhile, how do they change the sound?
>>79672013its a bit of a cheap one and the only websites i can see it on will take a while to ship, any alternatives? my budget is $200
Resident non-audiophile electrical engineer here guys. For a good sound, you don't need Burson or Sparkos opamps, because they're worse than $3 opamps.About linear power supplies, they're the devil. Huge, hot, heavy, induce mains hum in the sound and are generally shittier compared to a good 500kHz or 1MHz switching power supply. Just don't use a phone charger for supplying and amplifier. As for using your PC for music, don't go full retard and use a linear power supply with it, or other strange ideas. The switching frequency of the PC components will fuck with your sound either way. But don't worry. The solution is as simple as using a $5 TOSLINK cable feeding a DAC, or using a DAC with isolated USB. And if you use a moderately well engineered product, it will be isolated. Also, the Yggdrassil is shit beaten by their own Schiit Modius for a fraction of the price. CD transports may be the pinnacle of autism, by the way.
>>79672256hello, based department?
So what's a good alternative to the Topping L30 with them exploding all over the place?
>>79671885You sound like that resident audiophile retard, even worse, since you judge other people's listening habits.
>>79671804>Does the 6khz peak really obscure the resolving ability of the driver? On the contrary. I think it was an intentional design decision by Sennheiser's engineers since it accentuates their soundstage.>>79671924>The HD800 has something fucky going on with its earcup reflections/acoustics that make EQing a bandaid solution, or am I totally wrong? The HD800 respond very well to EQ, but you need more power for it to work correctly.Get a proper amp for them, look for oratory1990 EQ profiles on reddit and then apply them via your preferred EQ app. I used equalizerAPO+peace GUI on windows.t. FYI after six months of owning the ifi zen and fiio k5 pro dacs, I've settled on the ifi and sidelined the k5.The k5 is fine, has more power than the zen, and better connectivity, but the (firmware updated) zen is just that bit more enjoyable as a daily driver (4+ hours a day).

Pretty much every audio community would call me insane for pairing such a clean sounding SS amp with the 800 but I don't think I'm treble sensitive and I like hearing any and all the details in a recording even if it's recording flaws. >>79679745it's been going on for yearsthe hd600 and harman target circlejerking days were much better, cute even compared to this
>>79679784It's weird because both are highly competent manufacturers. It's Sennheiser who should be worried because their HD800 are horribly outclassed by the French and Japanese.
>>79679745It is a who's who in the world of overpriced and overhyped headphones meme off.
>>79679809Sennheiser isn't going to do shit because despite drastically falling behind other companies, theyre still pushed at top tier in most stores. You don't find out about other brands unless you go forum diving, or if you see other brands in stores theyll generally get less of a spotlight than Sennheiser which in effect makes Sennheiser look better to someone that doesnt know better.
>>79679809Not really. HD800S are still good headphones. The cheapest stax amp is $1000 since the 252S is discontinued and the 800S competes well with the Utopia. Not accounting for used stuff of course.
>>79672256Based and sensible in a sea of delusion.>>79673856Spending a bunch on audio equipment that doesn't perform well in objective measurements fills the same role for mid life crisis boomers rhat astrology does for white women in their late 20s.>>79675533Pray for those who were electrocuted by their schitty DACs.>>79672740Glad other people are arriving at the same place I did with my HD800>>79679472I upgraded from 6XXs to HD800s. The 6XXs have meh soundstage and aren't super clear for higher pitched noises (like a cymbal), but are otherwise excellent headphones and it's hard to justify upgrading from them unless you drop $1000. I wouldn't reccoment that DAC to someone buying new, but if you have it you won't be able to tell much of a difference between it and any other DAC, if you got all that for $400, your performance per dollar is just about as good as you can ask for.
>>79679809sennheiser has the mindshare so I don't think they feel pressured to innovate when people want to listen to the sennheiser legend and then proceed to convince their brains that this is what quality sounds like
Redpill me on getting a Focal Elear/Elegia for 400 bucks (2nd hand)I don't have a dac.

>>79679864Yeah, i got the g6 because i really wanted a mic input. I got the schiit fulla, but after it began earraping me every time i turned the volume knob, so i went with that. I understand that a better amp/dac might be better, but it doesn't sound to me like there would be one at that price point. If i decide at whatever point i REALLY need more quality, then i'll look at a better amp/dac. But like you said, i probably won't be able to tell the difference until a lot of money higher. And as far as 6xx, i have tinnitus so very high pitched stuff like cymbals are already fucked for clarity. But one question i have for you or anyone else. I think i might want another pair of headset to make up for that soundstage deficiency. That way I feel like i'll have all my content consumption bases at least decently covered. Any recommendations for a big soundstage something or other for less than $400, closer to $200-$300 ideally?

To be honest, once you've spent $100-150 or so on a DAC the law of diminishing returns kicks in super hard and they basically stop getting better (this is controversial but I've tested a lot of DACs, and there is barely a difference between $50 and $150, especially if your hearing is already a little fucked). Only get an amp if your current source cannot supply enough current to your headphones (which will manifest as less power in low tones), they can only add distortion otherwise.

I don't really get how to really tell when an amp will or wont be fine, but it sounds fine, and people tell me it's fine, so it's probably fine. I hear it gives more power than the fulla anyhow.

can the hd800s sound even half as good as the focal clears when eq'd?
>>79681357Maybe if you really try fuck it up hard. They'll sound better usually.
>>79679058You could upgrade the pads on them to the stpad2 from Yaxi. they are p expensive but they do improve the sound quality, making it more balanced.
>>79681206There's a lot of electricity math that goes in to determining it with confidence, but the 6XX have 300 ohms impedence which is very high. V = IR, so the current (I) will be very low for a given voltage. The HE4XX has 35 ohms which is still pretty high. Some big planar magnetics have like 8 ohms, so they need to be run with low voltage and very high amperage to reach the same power (P = VA). For what you have you don't need to worry about it.

It has enough power, and anything (except maybe tube amp) stronger I probably just couldn't tell the difference. One question though. Is there a sound quality difference that would be between high gain and low gain settings? I think i remember reading that everything should be set for the highest they go, except for the last step in volume to get the best sound quality. I have it at around 16% at high gain, and 50% at low. Is this correct in that the higher quality is at high gain, or does it not make a difference at all, just do whichever one has a more comfortable volume.

DO NOT BUY AUDIO TECHNICAAll Audio Technica products are made in China and engineered in Malaysia, while only the top management remains in Japan. My Audio-Technica ATH-SR50BTBW broke down today, exactly one year and 6 days after I bought them. >>79681835High gain is in theory the same or worse than low gain. Everything maxed except the last step is correct because digital equipment can only make things quieter by reducing the numeric values of the sound which loses information, and analog equipment performs worse at low powers. In general amplifiers have a problem where the left and right channel diverge in volume when the knob is set low (<20%), so you want the knob above this, thus low gain mode.
>Stax questionIf I got a KGST built with normal bias (230V) would it work well with the 007? I don’t really understand the limitations of normal bias vs pro bias.
>>79682891Why would you use it normal bias? Either way you could probably tap into the zener string and get normal bias and have the regular supply be pro bias.

>>79682920It’s ironically my most powerful electrostatic amp, I got it secondhand and it only has normal bias. It updating it to pro as easy as adding a few zener diodes? Would it be possible to add a “pro/normal” switch?
>>79683090Might be simpler than that. If you can take a pic of the power supply pcb there should be a 1Mohm pot that adjusts the bias. Stick a voltmeter at the bias test point and turn it up or down to adjust the bias. You could record the exact resistor value that has the bias you want, and then run that to a switch on the front, but that would be ugly and you're running hundreds of volts through a random switch.

The only bad thing about this is that if the converter fails, I will have to import another one, the ones I could get locally are all 220V to 110-120V. Those extra 10-20 volts could fry the components on the energizer, or reduce their lifespan. The Modius is their budged offering with said outputs, but I'm really interested in their multibit/R2R DAC. So, ideally, I would love to get a Gungnir Multibit, which is almost like the Yggdrasil, but at a half of its price. If not, a Bifrost would do, and it's at a bit over a half of the price of a Gungnit Multibit. I'm also open to other brands, as long as they have balanced outs.
