>On August 29, 2016, Max Goldberg announced that YTMND would likely soon be shutting down, citing ill health and the site's inability to fund its own hosting fees from ad revenue. Goldberg stated "Besides being a time capsule I don’t really see a reason for it to continue to exist... It seems like the internet has moved on...And I’ve moved on too. I don’t have much interest in the site beyond it being good memories."[11] Despite this, the site remains open as of March 2019. On May 12, 2018, the site stopped accepting new user signups as a result of Google shutting down version 1 of its ReCAPTCHA anti-spam mechanism. On May 12, 2019. On May 13th, 2019, the website was permanently shut down; any attempts to connect to the website now results in timeout errors.

I hope the archive gets saved.

Recently I learned the original Space Jam website is still being maintained by Warner Bros. You can even still watch tiny Quicktime videos of "behind the scenes Michael Jordan" clips if you have a browser that supports it. It's got the stupid fucking background every 90s website had and it had no cohesive layout whatsoever. Stuff like that is so rare today.

Okay, that's mostly fair, but it also implies that there was any main focus at all. Also, look at the #1 most subbed over time. Smosh, Fred, NigaHiga, PewDiePie. To your point though, RayWilliamJohnson did take the spot for a while and he was nearly the pinnacle of unoriginality and progenitor of the trash we see today. >shut up idiot, I asked a simple question.
That's the problem; you asked a question that could be answered by typing YTMND on any search engine, on Wikipedia, on ED or on any of the thousands of gay "meme wikis". Hell, practically any website on the Internet with a search bar is likely to yield useful results. You'll always find hostility if you seem like you're unwilling to take even the simplest, easiest of steps. If you're still confused after looking into the subject a bit, you might get an actual response with a question like "I'd never heard of this site before and doing some research, I still don't get why it was notable. Any first hand experiences?"

It was popular because it allowed just about anyone to make new or derivative multimedia without touching Flash. Any ol' dummy (and I mean this endearingly) could cobble together a page with an image, some text and an audio loop, and engage with the community. It became even more popular as it grew into a cybercultural hub of sorts, then died because of YouTube. I'll let you look up what the site is/was, though.
>>
>>70960217
>once its on the internet its there forever
I've always hated that idea because it's so obviously wrong. People who don't know what they're talking about (ie: boomers) think that anything on the Internet is completely set in stone forever for some reason, but it's easily one of the most impermanent media out there. Barely anyone that runs a site has a plan for what to do with their archives once they inevitably shut down, and major ones actively focus on looking at hot new shit while relegating everything else to the pile until they die and take their archives with them. If it weren't for active third-party efforts to save everything, there would be virtually no record of what things were like before the exact moment you see it, and even then they only have what people think to save in the first place. It's almost sad, because there's likely been great content that's just disappeared forever because nobody backed it up and it got scrubbed from existence when a server was turned off.

I'm kind of horrified to think about what it will look like when YouTube shuts down.

>startup sites can't make enough money to stay open without stooping to the same level as the oligopoly you're trying to overthrow, and even then there's a decent chance they'll just get flooded by /pol/shits who scare off everyone else because they think "we don't like google" and "please shitpost about jews more" are the same thing
>going through the government won't work because the majority of Congress gives 0 fucks about breaking up businesses and the amount of lobbying required to get them to do anything would bankrupt Bezos
>subverting tech companies from within isn't even an option because they all have insular communities that range from standard hivemind shit to a full-on cult of personality
I'd like to think there's hope, but the only angle I can see is subtly manipulating public opinion, certain politicians, and media outlets to be as hostile to tech companies as possible, until there's major public support for breaking them up and one of the major parties supports it to the point where you have to be on board with that to be viewed as electable.
Essentially you'd have to have shadow government style influence over American society for it to be possible within a feasible timespan.

At least a honorary zoomer, if you don't fit into the age range. Even my non-VORE (non-very-online-retard) friends would go "oh yeah, that site, damn" if I mentioned that it died. What did you frequent, instead? I'm curious to know what a Newfag's Journey through the Internet looks like.

before the fucking www, bbs were filled with rednceck flyover incel soccer mom boomers before that
people invent a mythical golden age. in the renaisance, people burned books, scholarship and wisdom of contemporaries (like duns scotus, villified as the original dunce) to honor a mythical classical era that never really existed.
dont make the same mistakes. do not falsify the recent past.

there is a "no fun" cult, driven by the business pressures of extreme cemtralization, monopolization, monetization, etc.
this is distinct from "no politics".
you merely bought into corporate propaganda.

English might not be your first language, but the retarded tripfag (important qualification for this one) didn't quite mean "anyone younger than the speaker". Xhe likely meant to draw an analogue between the zoomers of today and the newfags of yesteryear.
