doesn't steam charges 30% too?
>>70939428>passed on to usersi don't think it's passed on to users on steam. steam charges $60 for new games where all other stores do too generally speaking. There was a case of one game being sold for less on epic store because they take less of a cut
>>70939428And Google Play, but you have the option of installing non steam apps on your PC and non Play apks from Fdroid or other sources in android. With Apple they enforce a monopoly
>>70939428All online stores are at risk of antitrust law suits.Anti-Monopoly laws might begin to be enforced. That's all the big online retailers. This will mean a change in business practices and a change in restructuring online retail.
>>70939404It shouldn't just be the 30% shit. They should also be forced to either, or both:- Allow third party apps in the App Store to use the kinds of undocumented APIs and background execution and job scheduling APIs that apple apps can- Allow third party app stores / allow people to distribute .ipas without immediately getting their $100 certificate revoked.

I mean, this is good news, but it's only step 1 of like 30 to ending the walled garden. This was just a ruling based on one narrow defense Apple raised (out of about 14 defense). It took a few years to get here, and now it goes back down to the lower courts for the other defenses to play out. It will be a few more years (and possible more supreme court trips) before this is resolved.
>>70939428The problem isn't the price, the problem is that iPhone only supports (offically away), installing apps from Apple's store. By Apple's own design the only way to get app's on iPhone is to go through the Apple controlled store. Apple has given themselves a monopoly on the ability to distribute apps. Steam isn't a monopoly because on any Windows/Mac/Linux computer you can install whatever software you want on it, likewise you can install whatever software you want on an Android phone, including different app stores so Google Play is not a monopoly there.

>>70945504>>70945512>Why is the government telling Apple their 30% share has to go?that's not what happened. all the supreme court did was say to say that apple could be sued by their customers. apple was trying to say that they never sell any apps to consumers, that the consumers buy the apps from the developers, but the supreme court said "no, everyone knows that you're the ones that the buyers are paying."apple had hoped that they could get the case thrown out, but the supreme court basically said, no, the buyers can sue you, apple.the supreme court made no decision about whether apple is a monopoly or not, or whether they can charge 30%. they just said that it's a valid lawsuit and that it can move forward.

>>70939404OH PLEASE!This would be so fucking good.
>>70946708It is, because publishers have other options besides selling on Steam, even if they do sell on Steam they can sell keys outside of Steam (of which Valve doesn't take a cut), and consumers can buy games on Steam, off Steam but for Steam, and not on Steam at all. It's a completely different scenario from Apple.
>>70946728>steam is a monopolyMonopolies are perfectly legal for this exact reason.
>>70946678the consumer has the choice between 50 manufacturers of the product. If the consumer doesn’t like the product/service provided by any of them they choose another until they are happy. The rejected ones have to improve something to gain back customers or they die. With that much competition it would be detrimental to piss off your customers. Also capitalism is supposed to allow the set up new competing companies to fill gaps in products/services.If we talking patents that’s a whole new system of regulation.

>>70946811Price gouged insulin. Much cheaper coca cola than water. All options have planned obsolescence or are have monopoly element baked in. Printers have ink and repair monopoly. Give me one printer manufacturer who makes long lasting repairable printers and has allowed competitors to make ink, parts and repair. Has competition on this submarkets. This is the future of all consumer electronics. Competitors get bought because they are not ripping off consumers and making money to compete against abusers. Comes a point when alternatives no longer pop up because all knowledge is centered. Oligopolies wont be broken down. All product options are bad and no choice but to buy bad. Oligopolies wont offer the better product option. How is this not a failure? Market wont change their product if it makes more money not to. Untapped market is not filled. Ex. see above text about a printer.Gatekeepers exist that favors those who can pay. No viable product can be made if the product doesnt make enough to pay for the gatekeeper or gatekeeper sees that it would harm those who pay the gatekeeper."You have a choice!"You imply consumers have power when they dont. There is somthing to be said for the idea that the people always get the government they deserve. Howsoever that government is constituted — whether by "democracy", by a republican, if aristocratic senate, or by king, tsar, or emperor...it is the passivity of the people that grants assent and legitimacy to their tyrants.Whereas the serfs suffered the privations of the feudal nobility; and the french king, buoyed up by the endurance of "les miserables", who later enabled the reign of terror and rule of Napoleon, were the architects of their own dismal, squalid fate; and whereas the swedes waged centuries of religious wars againt their baltic neighbors, Ben. F. rightfully believed the English culture and government to be the best — and this state of excellence was hard fought though constant struggle, for its people were the best, vigilent and most valiant.American independence was won with the aid of tyrannical continental despots, who Ben F., along with the rest of the revolutionaries, desperately wished to avoid being indebted to, or controlled by.Despite his "predjudice", Ben F. lived in paris as ambassador until the french revolution. He preferred to fuck milfs and widows as "they are grateful" for it.But his warnings about the athoritarian, marxist continental scum were just as prescient, truthful, and insightful then as they are today.>>70974069Whatever else that statement may be, it is not in favour of "vibrant diversity and multiculturalism".Nor is it in favor of the claim that "there really is no such thing as race," or that "race is performative", or "culturally constructed".It does not, for that matter, advocate discriminatory, racist policies designed to unfairly privilege midlle IQ hasidics against those northern or central asiatic races which have been objectively tested to be intellectually superior, not just to "whites", but also to negroes, dravidians, amerindians, and SEAmongrels.

On the other hand, some games are only available on steam and nowhere else so they have a monopoly on those games. But technically every game is a monopoly because no one else can sell those games anywhere else and only one person or group has control over it.It gets complicated and the pseudo lawyers on this french whoring website aren't going to be able to debate all the facts and nuances in the law to work it all out.
>>70949266>Most games can be launched without steam client or at the very least patched using steamless so that they don't need the clientWait really? Could you give me a link to a tutorial or something?
>>70939428valve doesn't own the operating system and disallow game stores other than steam
>>70951632Do you really think 4chan is socially liberal/middle today?
>>70958085>Steam has a price match clause (just like many stores do) so you cant even sell in another place for cheaper
>>70960098they can't compete because they would need a decade to match steam's feature listthere are plenty of alternative game/key stores
>>70981398Not him but you can just read their ToS if you care to. >>70980050>abolish the FDA! Yeah, no. I work for a medical company and the bigwigs do not give a shit about your health. They're terrified of FDA inspections though and that goes a long way.
>>70949092>So this only applies because you can't sideload on iphones then? It doesnt apply to android because of the existence of fdroid and the like?Pretty much, though you don't even need F-Droid or any alternative on Android, you can install applications directly, with no store having to be used.
incredibly epic. Apple's recent shareholder meetings all but confirm their future was in rent seeking in things like the app store. this could really destroy the value of apple significantly.
>>70966868Shit occasionally got past apple store. Like anything else, only install/run something you trust. Go overkill, install everything in a sandbox environment or VM.
>>70981361yes, especially after leftist shills/trolls invaded from 2016-2018 midterms. The userbase more than tripled during that period.what else could the new userbase be, other than "middle"?libertarians (left or right) are vanishingly rare anymore.we have instead morons who are "individualists" which is a fancy way of saying they are socially-left big government liberals like bill weld, or delusional stirner worshipping "marxists" who are really just corporate cocksleeves.and the rest dont even bother to pay any kind of lip service to ideals of freedom and autonomy in the slightest.
>>70948980presidents are chosen by majority vote (if you're lucky)phones are completely your choice, it's not even as bad as windows where the software availability can basically force someone to use it, everything important is available for both iOS and Android, there is no pressure to get an iPhone over any Android phone
>>70985450corporate issued devices, with vital infrastructure and apps tied to that particular ecosystem....unfortunately its a real problem in several workplaces.then there is social pressure: zooomzooms are 90% idevice users in the US
>>70985523>work iphonethis isn't a thing i've seen, maybe the US is differentin that case though, it's a work phone, not a personal one, treat it like an appliancethat and... it's a work phone, not your phone, even if it was an android phone with lineageos and root access, it still wouldn't be your phone, since it's work-provided
>>70981440They COULD compete on price though, but taking a lower cut and selling games cheaper so that Steam's 30% isn't passed onto the consumer.Steam's illegal cartel agreement is what makes them difficult to compete.>>70980458The large corporations already do, outside of freely allowing us to leave their enslavement. They're convinced us the enslavement is willful.
