what should I do about this crack in the rollcage of my W530? seems to have happened because it's right by the cooling system so must have been caused by thermal stress
when the keyboard and palmrest are removed and I push the display up, it flexes a lot due to the crack
was thinking about using thermal glue, does that sound like a good idea?

For modern shitposting and movie watching tasks tasks a Sandy or Ivy Bridge ThinkPad will be less than $150.
They are easy and inexpensive to service if something breaks.
They're pretty good

I am moving and getting rid of my desktop. I will only have my X230 and a few spare hard drives/ssd's from the desktop.

For one you don't get USB3.0 speeds out of them, you are limited to 1.5 gbps (I think), only 3x faster than USB2.0 while USB3.0 is 5.0 gbps.

Then they also have weird drivers which may or may not work or be updated and are finicky with the expresscard being plugged/unplugged or the USB device being plugged/unplugged. And the Expresscard being unplugged and plugged back in is a very common occurrence since trying to plug things into it will sometimes trigger the pop-out thingy.

Some also get hot, meaning they are idly sucking up power.

You can try with some good epoxy like Araldite, clean the crack with degreaser before (like automotive brake cleaner).

If it cracks again I would make small glass fiber patch over it and again fill crack with epoxy and then coat patch itself with epoxy.

Ignore superglue and bondo retards, you'll just contaminate everything.

It's best to build your Coreboot image with your ME binary already stripped before being packed, and then run me_cleaner again on your final Coreboot rom to set the flash descriptor permissions (I think parameter -d?). Then flash externally, and you'll never have to flash any BIOS region ever again except for the actual BIOS section (Eg, your new Coreboot builds, and not ever have to touch the ME or GBE info). If you've already flashed externally and don't want to take the thing apart, you can flash individual sections of the flash, like the flash descriptor or ME if you didn't strip and disable it properly. After you do it once you'll likely never need to touch them again.

Alternatively you can just select the Coreboot option in nconfig "Strip down the Intel ME/TXE firmware", which will run ME_cleaner and strip and enable the HAP bit, but will not set the flash descriptor permissions. It really isn't required to have your ME descriptor permissions set, but it would disallow the ME from writing to other sectors of your flash chip. Better safe than sorry!

For light web browsing (use content blockers), media consumption, and programming heck yeah.
>>
>>70574502
Not that guy, but I see the term light browsing thrown around a lot. I would assume this means that streaming services such as YouTube would only work smoothly with low resolutions (480p and below, maybe 720p), right? I remember reading on the now defunct buyer's guide that C2Ds struggle with high bitrate video
>>
What's the consensus on the X1 Extreme?
>>
If my thinkpad has an HDMI port, will it support 4K and 1440p resolutions on a standalone monitor? I already ordered an E485 but never thought about this.
>>
>>70574599
My X200 with a p8700 plays Youtube videos in MPV at 720p/60FPS, or 1080p/30FPS. Though, for what reason you'd want to play 1080p videos on a 1280x800 display, beats me. By light browsing, I mean not Discuck or other shitty Javascript trash sites, and obviously using a content filter to disallow third party trackers.
>>
>>70574502
>It's best to build your Coreboot image with your ME binary already stripped before being packed, and then run me_cleaner again on your final Coreboot rom to set the flash descriptor permissions

I don't quite understand. The ME part is from the bottom chip, coreboot doesn't replace any of it so why would I use a me_cleaner on coreboot rom? I'm sorry I have not yet done anything on the x230, but going to be doing in a few weeks, just don't wanna mess anything and want to do it right.

I read this pretty cringy guide, how accurate is this and what would I need to do on top of this to do everything I can to clean ME?

>For what reason you'd want to play 1080p on a 1280x800 display beats me
Yeah, I should have clarified that I was thinking about doing that in a T60/T61/T400, but then again, there's not much of a difference between 720p and 1080p even in the 1440x900 (or something close to that) display
>Not Discuck or other shitty Jankyscript trash sites
Yeah, that's what I'd have my T530 for: for the zoomer trash and Wangblows
Thanks for the advice, I might pick up those two T61's that I mentioned a few threads ago and get them fully fixed, even if they don't have NoVIDIA GPUs (though I've heard that it's preferable that they don't)

Not necessarily. It depends on the GPU. Just google "max resolution for ___ gpu" and it will say what resolutions over what ports.

old t510 is bad condition so I was looking for something new, more powerful and hopefully lightweight. Should I get:

-T460s (full HD)
-X1 carbon second gen (only 1600x900, but otherwise seems nice)
-X250
-Some uncucked Dell/HP (i don't know which model)

Yeah I looked up before asking here. I rephrased my search terms and finally found several forums and reddits where they say the 2500U supports 4K60fps over HDMI, but my thinkpad has 1.4b HDMI so it is "only" 4K30fps.

>flash descriptor permissions
what do you mean by this
>>
>>70574759
What's on the last chip is irrelevant as long as you keep your final Coreboot image within 8MB. If it's bigger than 8MB, then you'll have to flash to both chips. The 8MB + 4MB chips on the XX30 series are virtually combined (in that order) into a single 12MB chip, and what's on that chip is determined by your flash descriptor, which is built when you compile Coreboot. You'll be required to supply your ME image in order to compile Coreboot, so that it can put it in its new spot on the flash chip.

Although this is for the T430, this is a pretty info-complete guide that should work fine for the X230:

https://nm-projects.de/2017/08/flashing-coreboot-on-the-t430-with-a-raspberry-pi/

>>70574867
Can't vouch for the T60 or T61, they likely use worse on-board graphics. The T400 will do the same as the X200 performance-wise with the iGPU.

>>70575585
The flash descriptor tells your chipset what partitions are on the flash, where to find them, and what they're allowed to access when executed. For security reasons, it's a good idea to disallow the ME from R/W to other sectors of the flash.

you modify the grub.cfg in your libreboot rom.
https://libreboot.org/docs/gnulinux/grub_cbfs.html
>>
>>70575610
Okay, so I would extract from both chips, combine them, run me_cleaner on them, build coreboot and run me_cleaner on the built rom again? Then flash that ROM to the 8MB chip (if it's not over 8MB)? So flashing only the top chip is effectivelly like flashing both chips?

If the rom is over 8MB, I would need to split the image and externally flash both? Could I try to shrink the ME to get it fit?
https://github.com/corna/me_cleaner/wiki/External-flashing

And that would be all there is/can be? Thank you for the help man.

not him but its basically this
>read both chips (8mb and 4mb)
>combine both roms into at 12mb rom( cat 8mb 4mb > 12mb)
>use ifdtool -x to extract flashregions
>build coreboot rom with extracted flashregions
no need to run me_cleaner, simply select "Strip down the Intel ME/TXE firmware" to neuter intel_me
>split coreboot rom(12mb) into a 8mb rom and 4mb rom
>flash 8mb and 4mb onto their respective chips

If you're talking about the BIOS update, I don't believe there is a way to ignore that check so you'd have to flash it with something like a rasbpi.

I'm looking for a small laptop that would allow me to:
- use LibreOffice on a daily basis,
- have a battery life of at least 3 or more hours,
- have a screen smaller than 13" (12 or so would be perfect),

Used thinkpad market sounds all fine and dandy but I'm Polish so the availability for those is questionable to say the least and if not for that the prices posted here are at least 1.5x or 2x higher on Allegro (polish ebay). Which Thinkpad would meet my requirements?

>>
>>70581876
Just that you'll fall in love with it, especially with an upgraded screen.

My T420's bios didn't like GPT partitioning, it had to be MBR. I thought I was going nuts when I first set things up, then I found the problem. The bios chip is under the magnesium frame, so external flashing requires a complete tear down. There's an SPI header near the bios, I exposed it by sawing a small chunk out of the frame and soldering in a socket.

If you're not up for coreboot shenanigans, the bios update cd is available on the Lenovo website, but you have to hunt for it, the link you find from a basic search there is 404'd. If you completely strip it down, make sure the "wifi off" switch is lined up right, or when you get it back together again you'll have no wifi, and you'll have to do it all over again.

Repasting does wonders for internal temps. Beware of knockoff batteries on Amazon, 9-cell size with 6-cell capacity. Don't be afraid to take it apart, clean things out, and replace or upgrade as needed. They're a joy to work on.

Are you going to run linux or windows on it?

I managed to score a Toshiba 315CDS with a completely working battery which is amazing because this laptop is a Pentium 200mmx and I get 2hr out of the battery.

CD ROM isn't working I think and it's Windows 98 so that rules out reloading the OS, the factory image is fine I just want to get USB flash drives to work on it

Depending on the distro and your model thinkpad, there may be "some assembly required". For example, I run slackware so getting the trackpad to run required editing some config files. Battery life may or may not be as good as under windows, depending on what your distro has setup for the T420. It comes down to your google-fu and your willingness to get things working right.

Just post here with any questions you might have. On a sad note, if you have a T420 with the discrete Nvidia GPU, don't count on the GPU working properly under linux.

But don't let that stop you. Running linux is one way to truly know and own your machine, and keep it running for the foreseeable future. It's gratifying to get your install running nice and tight, without bullshit bloatware, microsoft spyware, ads bugging you in the start menu, and the OS constantly trying to get its fingers into your wallet.

Has anyone here upgraded from the T400/T410 to the T420 or a later model with a 7-row keyboard mod? How do you like it? I am starting to really feel that CPU performance and RAM bottleneck, especially with VMs and full-disk encryption. However, I am not willing to give up the 7-row keyboard. I also prefer 1440x900 to 1600x900 given the same diagonal. Someone should do the T70 thing for the T4{0,1}0 already.

I used to work in ITAD, and I remember there was a Thinkpad that came in where, when you opened the laptop, the keyboard had two risers in back that would push it up on an incline, making the laptop more ergonomic. I want to say it was an old P4 Thinkpad, but I'm not sure. Any of you guys remember which one did this?

Linux at work and at home for six years now. Hadn't touched windows in years. Then I had to setup my mother's Surface tablet, Windows 10 fresh setup. Candy Crush bullshit right there in the start menu, the OS continually asking for your credit card #, redundant and mismatched control panel and setup tools, shit not working right on an out-of-the-box install. Pajeet-tier sales tactics, constantly pushing the windows store. The OS shilling for Edge & Bing, continually asking "are you sure" on any change. This was on Microsoft's flagship product. She's had it for 3 weeks and it sits completely unused.

The amount of humiliation you people will pay for is incredible. If you will defend an OS that willfully disregards your hosts file, you're not in a position to make an intelligent comment.

This is how I corebooted mine.

The preferred method is to just have the pi hanging out somewhere on your network headless, and to ssh into it. Somewhere online is a howto on getting ssh setup by editing the raspbian config files on another machine, then booting up the pi with the modded config. But please, putty or screen into it from a legit PC, doing command line stuff from a tablet or phone is painful.

It's the sort of thing that seems like wizardry when you first do it, but becomes just a normal part of using computers. But really, you shouldn't be messing with coreboot if you have to ask this question. Most of the howtoo's I've seen on it assume you have basic knowledge and leave out a lot of obvious steps.

Think of how you'd tell a long haul trucker to drive from New York to California. Now think of how you'd tell it to a 10 year old.

I actually fucked up. It was an old SL500 that I found for 50 bucks. I was also looking at a T420 also so I just mixed up the model numbers. Anyone have info on the SL500? It's an old Core2duo one. The one I'm looking at has the Core2duo T5870 series but it says it supports up to the T9800. So if that one is socketed, it would be a nice small upgrade.

The latest AAA zoomer shit (fartnite and all of that crap) can't be played on most dankpads (T530 and above can play it on the lowest settings, though), but old games (Age of Empires, Diablo, Doom, etc) and indie pixel""""shit"""" (Terraria, Minecraft, Risk of Rain, and many of those shovelware RPGMaker games) can be played just fine
And besides, you can get an xboner 1 or a Censorship Station 4 if you want the AAA cinematic experience kusoge, so what's the deal?

T400 if you want dedicated graphics (not all of them have it) and a 14" screen

Probably like 1.5GHz pentium and 1-2GB of RAM, they're not very demanding but 13 and after are a bit less optimised than the previous ones.

If there is nothing under that circle near the crack, drill it and cut some threads to take a small screw. Then get a flat piece of metal and make a bridge to that other screw in the pic.
Fill the crack with epoxy before you tighten everything down.
