My PC blue-screened on my twice in 2 weeks when shutting it down. It now takes forever to download stuff and to get to the desktop after entering the password when compared to before. Both my SSD and HDD now cap out at 56 mb/s according to the steam game installation window even though they get up to 150 mb/s. How do I go about trouble shooting this ? Pic rel, its the SSD

say I want to make a forum with mysql and node. how does password encryption work? I mean users are supposedly going to have input boxes for account creation and login, which gets sent to me (the server). I guess I would have a users table in the database with fields for username and password; node scripts would be both getting the stuff from the input boxes in the client's html as well as interfacing with mysql to send parameterized queries to add a new row to that users table.
the password wouldn't be plaintext. how is it encrypted? ssl? what's actually going to be in that field, is it still a string or is it something more abstract?
whats the standard here, am I wrong from the start? is it more like a user should actually be added as a literal user of the db?

>>
>>70528096
make sure you dont do ANYTHING else on that computer
take the hdd out immediately
all youve actually lost is metadata for the locations of those files, they're still on the disk but if you write anything to it, it could overwrite stuff because theres nothing there anymore telling it "theres already stuff in this location"
you probably already knew this though and are just asking for a recovery software recommendation
in which case i cant help because im a dumbass and cant actually answer the question, sorry

Unfortunately, don't have another board available to test the CPU, or another CPU to test the MB.

passwords are not secure in plaintext or in a way that's reversible (encrypted)

previously it was common to hash a password with a salt (random value) so users of the same password have different hashes (and for other reasons)

now, instead of plain hashing things like Argon2 are recommended

Back in the older days of Ethernet, Ethernet ports would either be connected to a controller with MDI (computers, routers and end-devices) or MDI-X (switches and hubs) attached to the RJ-45 pinout. These two standards had different pinouts attached to the RJ-45 slot, and the signals would collide on the green and blue wires if two devices with the same MDI type were connected.. The crossover cable was made so that similar devices could be connected without signal collision. Nowadays, most switches, routers, and network cards have an Auto-MDI mode that will switch the MDI mode of the connector if it detects signal collisions between the two devices. Crossover cables are useless if you're dealing with network equipment made after 2006 or that supports Gigabit but some people will make them or buy them just in case they're dealing with legacy equipment.

Is an 860 EVO overkill for a ThinkPad (T430)? I've noticed how slow it's gotten recently, and it still has the 7200 RPM HDD that came with it when I bought it. I think that the best way to speed it up would be to replace the HDD with an SSD, but I want to know if there's any benefits or differences between the SSDs I should buy. The main recommendations I see floating around are the 860 EVO and 860 QVO, are there any big differences between those models? Or are there any other models/brands I should be looking out for?

An SSD will be a huge upgrade from an HDD. I think 860 QVO uses quad level cells instead of triple level cells that the EVO uses which basically means you're paying slightly less for a drive with less endurance. I'm not sure what the impact on endurance is but the price difference between the EVO and QVO is minimal.

inSS.str(rateInfo);

Here's a stupid question

Why would anyone fall for the apple meme

>can't install your own shit
>jailbreaking is effectively dead
>if it isn't paid it has intrusive ads (but apple fags would call it "supporting the developer" - WHICH IS ONLY REMOTELY NECESSARY BECAUSE APPLE CHARGES YOU A RECURRING FEE TO BE A DEVELOPER)

Yes, the performance for games is great. Especially rhythm games. And the camera is very nice. But everything else is fucking retarded. Don't get me started on itunes or how apple does not seem to think GPS needs a quick toggle. Seems to me like they want to make disabling GPS as unlikely as possible so people dumb enough to never consider it can be mined for those valuable datas.
>>
>>70532835
Still haven't figured out if /g/ loves or hates Luke Smith but he has a perfect video addressing this. the TLDR is "status symbol." No different than buying Nike over New Balance or whatever.

Dumber still is Apple is designed for people that aren't computer savvy. So much so that it is painful to use to anybody that isn't a moron when it comes to computers. But that's neither here nor there. For the Facebook-using, non-trouble-shooting simpletons that need "just werx" Apple fills that void. It's for people that don't care about hardware specs or how their operating system actually works - just that the software they use works. No more, no less.

Your arguments for performance and such aren't actual justifications. For the cost of a Mac you can build better for less. Apple's whole model is dependent upon people that don't understand hardware specs and the sort. It's "Alienware" or "IBuyPower" for hipsters instead of gamers.

My sister came to me and asked me to "fix" her old netbook. It's an old Acer Aspire (1.66 GHz, 1 GB ram). She needs to work with docx, xlsx and pptx. Now, there is Win 7 installed, but it runs like complete shit, so I would rather downgrade it, but XP isn't supported anymore and I don't wanna let her expose. Am I being paranoid? Is XP still safe to use? Or what else should I do?
>>
>>70532938
>Could have fooled me with how out of the way so many settings are.
See that's the thing. They don't want you dicking around with the settings. It isn't meant to be tweaked by the end-user. Out of box is how it's supposed to be and you're just being naughty if you go poking around. The settings on their devices are also completely non-intuitive by design (again to my point of not being designed for the computer savvy). Shit isn't where you'd expect because you aren't supposed tweak anything. I can't think of any honest examples because I don't Apple but say the end-user wants their files portrayed a certain way. You or I might immediately try to pull up file/folder preferences (or like a lot of /g/ - "WTF is this browser nonsense!? 'ls -la', done"). Instead Apple might have that shit hidden away in some entirely different menu that doesn't seem to fit the context of the options.

You're supposed to use their products as-is, out of box. If you're even remotely interested in tweaking any kind of settings Apple isn't the brand for you.
>>

How do I go about getting permanent ownership of a domain name?

It's clear that this:
gail.com
is held in perpetuity, or something like it; otherwise Google would have snapped it up.

I'm interested in getting even a total gibberish domain name so that I can use it for email. I travel frequently, so I want something more permanent than just a local phone number.

Go to a registrar of your choice. (Avoid godaddy, namecheap), pick a domain name and pay for it.
Some also offer a small email hosting packages included with a domain.

Don't use trademarked/copyrighted names or you could lose them.
>>
>>70533153
not him but what i do is have a volume mounted which basically acts as a shared folder between the host and the container where i keep all my work, the container can then be deleted completely and replaced by a new one without you losing any data

Is this ever okay to accept unless it's free? Or even if it's free? Assuming you're buying a domain you probably have a home server or a VPS somewhere. Wouldn't it be better to save the cost (if there is one) and fire up your own mail server on the VPS?
>>
>>70533153
You can bind certain directories to the host system.
I do this for config files of services I run in docker containers, so I can edit them on the host system and then just relaunch the container.
>>
>>70533156
I looked up the WHOIS for gail.com (which is pretty much my "case study" for this topic,) and it includes these lines:

Creation Date: 1996-04-04T05:00:00Z
Registrar Registration Expiration Date: 2022-04-05T04:00:00Z

Does this mean domain name registrars only lease domain names, or is it just a matter of needing to prevent it lapsing by saying, "hey, I'm not dead, you can't have it back yet"?
>>
>>70533223
>Is this ever okay to accept unless it's free?
If you need some basic email hosting it's fine.
My registrar has a free and premium mailbox, the free one is limited to 3GB and if you want more you pay like 3 euros a month.

The cheapest digital ocean droplet costs like 6 euros a month and you have to administrate/set it up yourself.
>>
>>70533291
You cannot buy domain names permanently.
I think the longest period you can buy it for is 10 years, but it might vary per TLD.

It might be borked but I remember using an ancient Ubu CD to get it running on an even more ancient PC. I think a buddy and I were sitting in his home office getting shitfaced and both shat bricks when the fucker finally turned the page to "installation complete."

That said it probably isn't your case and restarting certainly wouldn't have helped matters in the event you did need to wait longer. If you have another machine maybe try downloading and installing the Ubuntu Minimal ISO. If you're memory starved or have other hardware troubles a slimmed down, non-live installer can sometimes do the trick.

>>
>>70533415
You'll spend more time scheduling than doing. Trust me, I tried to be as anal as you're describing. It's just fucking unhealthy unless you have somebody else managing it for you. There's a reason anybody that can afford to hires receptionists/secretaries to handle that shit - it's because when things run late, something needs to be rescheduled, or you simply can't be assed, you have somebody else to eat shit whne it comes to rearranging the calendar, kissing ass, and shmoozing over angry appointment-holders.

What you're describing can be achieved in any calendar app/software/site from stock Android/Samsung Calendar shit, Google Calendar, and so on. You just have to maintain the shit which is a job unto itself.

The most I do is maintain three calendars in Google. One is just the default holiday calendar and I don't need to change a thing. Another calendar is the birthdays of friend's, family, and acquaintances. The last is anything professional or binding and I try to keep that as minimal as possible. If you're busy enough that things need constant rearrangement and adjustment you'd better be making enough money to pay somebody to do that shit for you.

Download the ISO file.

On modern/UEFI systems you don't need to set your usb drives bootable, so just format it and copy the files in the ISO (not the ISO itself) onto it.

And just to expand and explain how anal I am: I have a fishing tackle spreadsheet. It has the quantity of any given lure or soft-plastic I own. It has how many soft-plastics come per bag and how many bags I own. If I lose a lure while fishing or if I fish a certain soft-plastic to the point where it's missing a claw (crawfish trailer) or tail (spinnerbait trailer, grub, etc) and I decide to trash it I take note and then update said spreadsheet the moment I'm home and unpacked. I have scanned UPC code. I have highlighting when stock is great/low/extremely low. Websites with the best prices on standby.

And even I won't fucking attempt to screw myself into a fixed calendar day, nor record a day into a calendar afterward because what I do any given day is often inconsistent and a righteous headache to keep track of.

Then again if you live a fairly mundane life where you can "0500 - wake, 0510 - shit, 0512 - wipe ass, 0515 - shower, 0530 - cook breakfast, 0545 - eat breakfast, and so on" then by all means give it a go. I'd personally rather drive a nail through my cock.
>>
>>70531406
No seriously
>>
>>70533529
Replied while I was replying.

Fuck a calendar - take notes. Have an idea you don't want to forget? Write that shit down. Somebody asks if you want to get together to do X on Y date at Z time? Write that shit down. Woke up after a weird dream and don't want to lose the details? Write that shit down.

A simple journal might serve you better than any calendar software ever will. I personally use a military-style "padfolio" which is a fancy way of saying a tiny, zip-up, three-ring binder with a camouflage pattern and some pockets and shit. I keep it on me at all times. It's in my laptop bag throughout the day. When I'm driving before I start I take it out of the bag so I can jot shit down quick (license plates, songs I hear on the radio, etc), and when I go to sleep it's on the table by the bed. I tend to date every page and if I'm mindful enough I might timestamp things or at least make rough reference to time ("Woke up this morning after a strange dream... blah blah... gave me this idea...").

The grasping for control and organization can often be just unhealthy as the disorganization itself. Or even more-so. I may be wrong but what you think you want probably isn't precisely what you need. Maybe consider something simpler like what I've described above.
>>
>>70533529
>>70533644
To further expand - recording doesn't mean shit without reflection!

At the end of the day, before you go to bed, take time out to review your notes. This is when software might start coming into play. If you're as bad as you say you are set multiple reminders for things like dates/times. If you were invited to something set a reminder a week in advance, another three days in advance, another the day before, and one more the morning of.

If it's matters of urgency try to incorporate some stress in your notes and software reminders. There's a bunch of silly fucking software out there to disable your apps/browsing/whatever during X time period when you should be doing Y but fuck all that noise. Man up and when you get a reminder alert that says "sit down and fucking study this subject" or "get cleaned up to go meet Joey for pinochle tournament" don't sit and scratch your balls or rub one out. Study or get cleaned up and then go stomp some fucking fools at pinochle.

Software is only a tool - it won't fix your problems. It can only help you help yourself. If you start putting too much into it it's just another time-sink.

I am continuing investigation while buying new TV. Some anon said that 1080 TV is really not a gamble and I should look for 4k.
- I see couple of technologies such as OLED / QLED / LED.
-- OLED seems to be most shilled (i.e. supposed to be fine), but I am concerned about screen persistence. Will this "burn-in" stay forever or is it temporary stuff?
-- Can I really tell the difference between those technologies?
- Many of those TVs are featuring some system/os(?) at I have no clue how well supported they are. All I want is application for popular streaming service. i know they can be hardly supported if ever, for instance LG had dropped the ball with aquos net.

>>70528767
I did that on VirtualBox, but any virtualization tool will do. But make a note, that the disk image MUST be VHD.
After closing the virtual system with sysprep, you need to attach the related .vhd disk image with diskmgmt.msc and do some magic commands with dism command.
Here is the site I worked with: https://finalthought.org/2015/01/16/creating-customized-windows-8-1-media-iso-wim-flash-drive-part-2/
- In short dism is a multi-tool used for managing with current image (the one you are running right now) as well the offline image.
- The reason we are doing this offline is that sysprep perform a cleanup of temporary files (you can treat it as "white noise")
- Capture-Image will analyze pointed partition (the one with Windows / ProgramData / ...), compress it and produce singular file .wim

After you obtain .wim file you can copy it to bootable, windows installation media and replace it with former .wim file.

It depends on the sending mail server if it tries again after a while. Usually they should try again after a few minutes or hours, but they might also give up immediately and discard the mail.
If the data hosting service runs a mail server, then you can use those if they let you.

In the end it's just software running on a public reachable computer.
Be it a web server, mail server, ftp server or any other sort of server.

I have a Trust Vergo Wireless Ergonomic Comfort Mouse, which I find to be extremely comfortable. It's not really vertical, more just slanted. I think there's some logic behind them being better for your wrists. Just lay your arms on your desk, it's probably more comfortable to rotate your arms a little than it is to lay your hands flat.
I strongly suggest trying it out before buying it or buying from a store that accepts returns though, some of the more vertical ones I didn't like as much. And the Vergo has an extension where you can lay your wrist on which I like very much. Also, it's Trust, so the quality of the buttons is mediocre, and you can't rebind the buttons so I have two buttons that are basically useless.

X Windows - This is the foundation that allows for graphic elements to be drawn on the display. X Windows builds the primitive framework that allows moving of windows, interactions with keyboard and mouse, and draws windows. This is required for any graphical desktop.
Window Manager: The Window Manager is the piece of the puzzle that controls the placement and appearance of windows. Window Managers include: Enlightenment, Afterstep, FVWM, Fluxbox, IceWM, etc. Requires X Windows but not a desktop environment.
Desktop Environment: This is where it begins to get a little fuzzy for some. A Desktop Environment includes a Window Manager but builds upon it. The Desktop Environment typically is a far more fully integrated system than a Window Manager. Requires both X Windows and a Window Manager.

Well, a lot of the basic unix APIs haven't changed in decades. Dealing with files, bsd sockets for networking and so on is basically unchanged since inception.

Themes are just icons and colour sets.

Window managers determine how windows and menus are drawn and how they're organised. Tiling WMs are the most unusual, so look at some screenshots or videos of those and you'll get the picture pretty quickly.

A DE is like a suite of basic software that includes the above. There's usually a common design philosophy, such as the Gnome principle of making everything look like a phone app and be about as flexible.

Two questions

1.
What is the best type of panel to get with a new monitor ?
IPS ?
I'm just sticking to 60 hz for now since 144hz on 4k isn't afforable just yet.
Or would it be worth waiting for 8k 60hz/144hz (is that even possible right now ?) monitors to come out for regular consumers (it's still incredibly expensive at the moment).
I don't do anything in terms of photoshop but do want a nice screen to look at and want it mostly so I can record higher resolution video's for on youtube.

>if there is a noticeable quality difference when stretching the 1080p60 remote play footage
No.

>8k 60hz/144hz (is that even possible right now ?)
No, we're still grappling with 4k, especially above 60 fps. And no, 8k is going to be entirely a meme in almost all situations. 4k is barely an improvement over say 1440p, and we're quickly reaching the point where resolution isn't a limiting factor in our viewing experience. And even if you overcome the ridiculous needs of a monitor like that, that's the EASY part. 4k streams, whether broadcast or internet, are strangled to the point of being near pointless, it's gonna be damn near impossible to do 8k properly in the next 10 years or so, and nobody gives a fuck anyway. 4k was largely a marketing gimmic. 8k is that with the last shreds of actual worth sucked out.

Just how bad are £10 gaming chairs from china?
Surely they can't be worse than the wooden chair I'm using now... right?
>>
>>70538222
Can you link to one of those, that seems kind of interesting if they are only £10
>>
>>70538318
I just went to ebay, searched gaming chairs, filtered to "buy it now" only and set the max price to £10.
4chan doesn't let me post links since my ip range is sketchy apparently.

I haven't chosen any chair in particular yet, I was just wondering if getting any chair for less than £10 is a deathwish since most websites consider anything between £100-£150 to be the "budget" range

>>
>>70538465
Yeah the quality might be questionable but I've never paid more than 50 bucks for a deskchair myself.
I'd say try it if you want to wager £10 on it, I'd try it just to see what the quality is like.
And even if those things only last you like a year or two it's still cheaper than buying a 'budget' £150 desk chair.

No idea, mind you, if that applies to the chairs ALDI sells in the UK.

Content made for CRTs at 480i or 240p will never look quite right on a modern digital display. fans of retro video games regularly use CRTs because (assuming you set it up right) the picture is much better than you can get on any flat panel

I'm trying to block two websites in Firefox from using ipv6 routing using the about:config option "network.dns.ipv4OnlyDomains".

Say i want to block example1.com and example2.com and their subdomains.

The proper string to define this would be which one?

"example1.com,example2.com"
".example1.com,.example2.com"
"example1.com,.example1.com,example2.com,.example2.com"

The major doubt is what difference the dot makes effectively, since on the firefox wiki page, they mention ".doubleclick.net" as the default setting at some point.

I want to buy a Core i5, 8GB RAM PC. I want to know which GPU is optimal for me. I am a casual dota player. What is the optimal min/avarage/max fps for playing on high resolution (1080p) with all effects enabled (I take it the minimum is 90 fps?), and which GPU is the most suitable for aquiring that fps range (considering the aforementioned GPU and RAM config).
Dota is the only game I ever play, and I need this particular CPU+RAM for other operations on my PC.
tl;dr Which (minimal) GPU product should I choose to build a PC for dota with i5 + 8GB RAM?

Windows often maintains different configs for each monitor combo. So whatever changes you make to a monitor's rez/refresh/color profile may be independent of what its set to when used as part of a larger set of screens.
>>
>>70540117
970 is $350.
My budget is low. Max 100 euro for GPU. I played dota on a GPU that I bought new for 50 euro back in 2011 and it did a great job, more than enough fps.
>>
>>70540346
Nothing will run it at 1080 at 60fps on max settings for under 100 euros.
A 1060 is around 250 euros.

You might find a used 3GB one for a little bit over 100.

If your monitor doesn't support high refresh rate, then 60 is what matters.

Look up the game's recommended GPU. Consider going AMD and used.

Keep it plugged in with the battery while using it. Shit's well designed, you're not taxing the battery that way, it's just there if you trip over the power cord.

Modern batteries have a lifetime based on how many charge/discharges you do, it's pretty simple. No need to wait until a specific percent or something. Also, don't let it get too hot for too long, that's also bad. Like the other user said, just plug it in.

Noob question about bank switching:

Say you have a computer that supports bank switching.

Does the whole board have multiple banks that you can switch between, and then each bank has some devices routed into it, or is the whole board one bank with all the devices on it and then each individual device has its own set of multiple banks that you can switch between on a per-device basis?

Is it always one or always the other? Or does it depend on the computer in question? Or is it sometimes / always both at once (i.e. devices spread across multiple global banks, some devices having their own local switchable banks)?

Careful with those IoT products, anon. They tend to be quite easy to hack. I know a guy who can hack any smart lock from a certain vendor, even if they're still on the shelves.
If you're adamant about getting one, i'd recommend against Amazon Ring. They recently got caught up in a scandal over people being able to spy on users who had them.
>>
>>70541465
What do you mean move the torrent files? Did you move the [name].torrent files, or did you move the actual movies, vidya, porn, etc you got? If you just moved the media, it probably is just redownloading it because the file system location it's supposed to be at is now vacant. If you moved the .torrents too and it's still doing that, I don't know how qb works, but you might have to mess around with your settings within the program itself and readjust the download location or something. Just some possibilities to think about.
