>>70148545

personally im glad i got the 4930k instead of 4770k or 4790k, i knew the extra cores would come in handy and its the reason i can use it fo at least a few more years before any frametime issues in games

mostly waiting for a good rtx game so i can play the grephiks, currently have metro exodus

i use madvr with ngu (superresolution)

the one use case i had for the ramdisk was to dump very high bitrate video from shadowplay, the ssd wasn't fast enough apparently or it was some bug in shadowplay. anyhow the ramdisk at 120 mbps video (or MBps?) solved it

the other use case is probably to put an older game/indie game on it and have it load very fast

Yup. It just works. Chromium with JS disable is very lightweight. It still plays my anime just fine. Very comfy to shitpost. Enough for development. It flies with a SSD. Unless it suddenly breaks, I don't see me replacing it in the next 6 years.

Arch is shit too, if you are a mint user you should just use Debian (((or Ubuntu))).
If you are an arch user you are better off with Fedora
>>

>if you are a mint user you should just use Debian or Ubuntu
>If you are an arch user you are better off with Fedora
wtf, I don't get why you think that. Could you explain your reasoning?
>>
>>70166610
mint is a middle man to Debian and Ubuntu packages, they add no patches not they check how they push them. Is literally setup to fail. Just use the real thing.
Arch is unstable as fuck, pushing development versions of xorg is stupid. Fedora has the latest stable packages, and is actually maintained by the software developers itself; as in, it uses gnome which is developed by fedora and red hat, or systemd, SELinux, and so on. In this sense Debian and Arch are also a middle man who pulls the packages made for other distro, to themselves. It's just some basic reasoning on what quality can you expect, Debian is actually good, arch isn't.
>>
>>70165383
Mint is the only distro I haven't had any problems with... yet. It may be bad, but it just werks, that's what I need right now. I have the stuff to do on this laptop, nigger, I can't mess with it

I have 8 gigs of RAM now, but I speak from experience. Back when I used a piece of shit Lubuntu with only 1 gig of RAM. I was smarter at managing resources and didn't have a 50 careless tabs and processes running.

If I had 4 gigs of RAM, I'd be more productive them having 8, but I agree 2 is way too little.

Why would you lie on a mongolian basket weaving forum? I've been using Arch for a couple of years now and have unironically had zero problems with packages.
>>
>>70167023
I have to try arch again, to be honest I wish it was good. I don't like Debian ancient packages so I use those mental gymnastics to use Fedora. But Arch would work too if it wasn't so close to upstream development

Should I upgrade the processor? $25 gets me another .4 GHz at one end of the scale and $200 gets me dual 3.4GHz and another heat sink at the other end. Still has only usb 2.0 though. Could a mac pro running ubuntu use an add in board with usb3.0 plugs?
>>
>>70170322
A 2008 Mac pro with dual 3.2 Xeon Quads performs on par with my FX-8350 rig, it's kinda insane, if you can get eight matching ECC FB-DIMMs for 32 or 64GB quad channel ram, and a 7950 Mac Edition, that could be a beast

AMD calls the 8350 a Vishera, but it's really an awesome clock improvement of bulldozer.

I'll bet you buy into the intel 14nm+++++ lakes that keep changing the name when it's the same damn thing they've been using for years at this point.

All my friends report Mint as being stable. If you say it's setup to fail, how come people aren't reporting breakage?
>Arch is unstable as fuck, pushing development versions of xorg is stupid.
I think it's designed to be so, it's a rolling distro. There's no way it would ever be stable, unless it's abandoned (if we mean stable as in "doesn't change").
I agree with your assertion about Fedora.
>>
>>70170580
> I hate intel
I prrefer AMD as well but I had terrible experience with them on linux.
My desktop kept freezing every few hours for 2 months until I figured out what was wrong.
I'm new to linux but still I had to spend eternity on google trying to figure out what was wrong and had tried everything, until I found an obscure forum post which suggested tweaking an odd setting in BIOS and that fixed my problem.
Makes me reluctant in buying AMD again.
>>
>>70170700
AMD is weird as fuck on linux, I couldn't get linux to boot off usb on the 8350 rig for the longest time, turns out the iommu controller is disabled by default in the bios.

stable doesn't mean it doesn't change debiantard, it means it doesn't crash and behaves as expected. you can freeze a broken arch snapshot it will not make it stable because it's old. You can get stability by not changing functionality while fixing bugs
>>
>>70170881
>stable doesn't mean it doesn't change debiantard, it means it doesn't crash and behaves as expected. you can freeze a broken arch snapshot it will not make it stable because it's old. You can get stability by not changing functionality while fixing bugs
Let's not argue semantics. I like my software being stable (in the Debian sense of the word), because it makes it harder for an update to break my workflow.
For example, recently an update to KDE caused Lattedock to not show icons for any open programs. It stayed like that for around 10 days and then it was fixed. These kind of things are very unlikely to occur in Debian.
Whether that works for you or not is up to you, some people do prefer bleeding edge because newer features, often bugs are solved, etc.

install neofetch with your package manager

you may not get all the different specs that other people get since your OS may have different properites than others. For example when I run neofetch I will never get a DE (Desktop Environment) since I only have a WM (Window Manager) installed.

It's a pretty similar concept even down to the retarded idea of shared floating-point units, but with much more threads. The individual cores are quite weak and on their own couldn't even beat the ancient ARM9 chip in my file server in CoreMark, and they don't even double what I get out of my C3000, but together they could probably excel at some general workloads.
