Just tether or mobile hotspot... WWAN cards are scarce and not as good as your phone, and you need to be on Windows to use the (proprietary) drivers.

Seems like the best decision to wait, quad core 8th series have sealed the deal with performance, just hoping this series improves on the screen
Came close at looking at the Dell XPS series just fore the screen, shame battery life /thermal management /keyboard /build quality is dogshit

i just picked up an x220 off of ebay, newbie question inbound

is there supposed to be a coilwhine and they run hot? i was running arch and now manjaro (arch on my other laptop) as i wanted something quick and ready to use

42 percent battery, guy said nothing wrong with laptop, is there common issues with the front usb port on the left though? seems like it doesnt work

the laptop constantly smells like smoke as if something is cooking inside.. other then that everything seems running alright (1hr screentime is shit though)

anyone do an IPS upgrade or the FHD Mod? just wanting the cheapest ips/screen upgrade.

coreboot worthwhile? got a raspberry pi untouched thinking about giving it a crack

cheers guys

I wouldn't trust it, may be an unregulated power supply or worse, an unstable regulated power supply with weird peak voltages. If you have a scope I would recommend checking if that "DC" is really DC or else get a branded power supply, if your laptop is worth more than 20 bucks I would seriously buying at least a semi-reputable power supply.

Negotiatinf with a seller on Gumtree who was a technology brainlet.

It was listed as an i5, 8GB for $250. He agrees to $200. Picked it up, perfect condition, though there's wear on the keyboard. I didn't check the specs there, and I knew it wasn't an i3 since it wasn't an X230i. Take it home, check BIOS, i7.

I got REALLY lucky.

Pick related of it now.

Mostly just overcharging for it and giving you no choices with the hardware.
The screen was also your standard 1920x1080 with absolutely no choices if you wanted a higher res or 16:10.

They marketed it as "the classic thinkpad experience" yet you had the same amount of choices as you'd get with an Apple machine and it cost about the same as an Apple machine.
Ultimately the only "classic thinkpad" it had going for it was the keyboard so people were rather disappointed.

Yes, grab it now, the fullhd monitor is excellent for visual work. Don't know how good the price is but the TN panel is easily one of the best made for laptops and is worth the price.
Maybe negotiate a bit, don't get the 4gb ram and SSD instead supply your own after buying it.
>>
>>69759052
Yeah, but for what I need (Just a comfy laptop to do some work with it) it seems like a little bit overkill. On ebay, there are other T520 with the Full HD monitor but with i5 and without the nVidia for a lot less (Around 150€), I don't really wanna waste too much money for something like that, I already own a more than decent desktop, is the performance boost really significant?

Didn't know you already have a desktop, well if you just want light work get those i5 T520 then, the processor should be fine for it.

Is there a particular problem with the X240 over the X230? I see both the T430 and T440p in the op as good choices, but only the x230 is mentioned.

X240 is when the basic design of the ThinkPad started to shift towards sleek and away from magic bento box of mystery.
>>
>>69760952
Not really anything wrong with the x240 at all.
Though, if you use the trackpoint and want physical buttons get the x250 instead. You can replace the x240 trackpad with the x250 trackpad, but it's kinda messy.

the x240-x260 have maybe the best battery life of any of the thinkpads, with a truly ultraportable build (x230 is kinda thicc).

I own an x250 and I love it. Got it for $180. Just make sure you don't get the i3 version, or else you're stuck with 8gb of ram, and it's not hard to find them with SSDs so just get one with an SSD.

I hate sleek shit. thinkpads should be big and chunky. We buy thinkpads instead of macbooks for a reason. Even the X2(0,1,2,3)0s are chunky. That's what they're supposed to be like. Oh, that reminds me. Is there any thinkpad with a 100% keyboard that isn't sleekshit? I don't want to get some gay modern thinkpad but i want a numpad.

Hey /g/,
I bought an x200 tablet at an auction and it didn't come with a charging cable. I bought a universal one but the battery doesn't charge (it runs fine off the universal adapter though). Is the battery shot, or do these things prevent charging off of third-party power adapters? Pic related, it's a Targus 90W APA31CA.

So, after having used the x220 all the way to x250 at least at some point in time, here's my wisdom

>from x220-x250, the performance is virtually the same across the board because after x230, they started using undervolted CPUs which are more power efficient at the relative cost of performance
>because of this, the x240 and x250 have nuts battery life for everyday use, the x220 and x230 get the job done still though
>x220 has my favorite feeling keyboard, but the x240 and x250 have nice feeling keyboards as well
>x240-x250 keyboard is better than the x230 keyboard to me, since it's basically a firmer, more responsive and tactile feeling chicklet keyboard
>go with the x240-x250 if you're coming from a Macbook Pro for sure, since the trackpad and keyboards are very similar
>x250 is across the board better than the x240, since it has trackpoint buttons, 1080p IPS display, can have up to 16gb of RAM
>x220-x230 is more easily reparable than the x240-x250, but the x240 and x250 are still very repairable by most modern laptop standards
>x240-x250 are much lighter and more portable than the x220 and x230
>most of the same ports across the board
>it's minor, but I personally like the more recent square power connector more, since in the past I've had issues with the round power connector getting pushed back into the case because they're glued in
>x250 feels the sturdiest all around, but they're all tanks

so tl;dr
>if you want sleeker, more portable, better screen, modern features, best battery life:
>x250
>if you want legacy features, nicest keyboard, absolute cheapest still suitable for everyday use:
>x220
>x240 and x230 are kind of like the x-series step children, still decent but avoid unless you find a deal

RAM has a frequency right? 1366MHz, 1600MHz, 2133MHz, etc. If you have one stick that's at 1600MHz and another only at 1366MHz, the 1600MHz stick will not be able to run at its fastest speed.
This is an oversimplification but it's what'll happen.
>>
>>69767759
I mean unless you set XMP up which I'm not even sure you can on a thinkpad motherboard, the ram will run at the JEDEC standard speed for that generation/DDR#. Just make sure the module is at least that fast.
>>
>>69767759
so why does he have to make sure theyre the same speed, like you said he had to?
all he needs to do is make sure the new stick is the same speed *or faster* to ensure he isnt slowing anything down

I bought a barely used t460 off fb recently, I enjoy it a lot, but I have one really weird issue that no amount of troubleshoot has fixed
The touchpad does this thing where, I'm not sure I've isolated the exact thing that causes it yet, but seemingly randomly every few clicks (only from the touchpad mind you, not trackpoint) it will "lock up" cursor movement
But it doesn't really lock movement up. I'll click, and if I don't lift my finger, it'll act like it's clicking at a million clicks a second, if I drag it'll pause shit if i'm on youtube and move over to it (mind you, it moving is like really spastic, I have to really drag and it doesn't move so much as flicks, and it barely moves at a time, 3 or 4 drags to go from left of the screen to the right) clicking like no tomorrow the whole time.
I lift my finger from the touchpad and it stops. But it sucks because I wanna be able to just keep dragging and clicking and not have to worry about it locking up and clicking a bunch. I've tried reinstalling drivers and changing all the settings I could find everywhere relating to it. Nothin.
Anyone have any clue what the fuck this is? It's just bizarre. I've never seen anything like it from any laptop.

>built-in buttons for rotating screen
>you can rotate it into portrait and flip the screen around to read manga on it
>you can tilt the screen to show someone something without them standing right next to you
The only real downsides are not getting more proper hinges. The main thing that keeps the screen in the standard position are several rubber pads, and they get worn down over time. I got two X220Ts with one of them in better condition than the other. The one in worse condition can rotate while closed due to missing rubber.

Look at the actual spec differences and decide how much you care. The 500s are all 15" so if resolution is a consideration you might consider a T520 and W520 equal for example. Main difference you'll probably find is the discrete GPU and how powerful it is.

Not that I know of, but I recall hearing the Elitebook 8770W had one.

What does /tpg/ think of this WLAN card for the X201?:
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Atheros-QCA9880-802-11AC-1300Mbps-802-11AC-Dual-Band-Wireless-MINI-PCI-E-WiFi-network-card/32951234273.html

Looks good to be except
>5 Watts(Max)
but that doesn't mean idle power usage is terrible, right? or at least not much worse than my current card..
>>
>>69771103
wish that was halfsized

can you upgrade the graphics card in a msi GV laptop?
>>
>>69771103
No joke, I was looking at that yesterday. Those are meant as broadcasting boards, and they don't work properly in many devices due to BIOS problems. They really aren't meant for laptops.
>>
>>69771178
I have modified BIOS with whitelist removal. What do you mean by "broadcasting boards"?
>>
>>69771103
I would verify on h-node that it works with all free software before getting it.
>>
>>69771103
Whaat you should look into are M.2 to Mini PCIe adapter boards, like this: http://aliexpress.com/item/M-2-NGFF-Chave-A-para-Mini-PCI-E-PCI-Express-Adaptador-Conversor-para-Intel-9260/32947256959.html
A reddit guy did that and posted his results here: https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/8sq7se/small_diy_project_intel_9260ngw_to_x220/

100 for a 2520m t420 with only 4gb ram and a hdd instead of ssd is about right.
Expect a couple things that would need fixing, like the battery most likely.
You have to buy an adaptor for it, extra ram stick, ssd if you want speed and a cpu upgrade (if you so desire since it is a slot cpu) so you're possibly looking at 200 or so by the end of it (maybe less really) at which point I'd say shoot for a newer thinkpad, I got a 2016 one for 200 and I like it a lot more than my t420 (and I liked that one a lot)
Also probably getting a lower res display with that too. 16x9 is minimum for being usable.
>>
>>69771152
$100 for something that
>doesn't have a charger
>no operating system
>(most likely) no working battery
is not something I'd call suspiciously low, hell you could probably pick one up with a charger and OS for cheaper than that. Not that the OS matters to most people here on /g/ since they just reinstall it anyway but it does to some people.

I don't see it on that website, but the page on Ali says it uses the ath10k kernel driver and this page confirms that:

>What you should look into are M.2 to Mini PCIe adapter boards
Ok, I'll do more research.
>They can turn a PC into a wireless router.
Interesting, but I still don't see how this is a bad thing, as long as power usage isn't terrible

Because it is meant for broadcast, I'd imagine its power consumption to be terrible. You're better off looking for something designed to be used as a mobile transceiver, like the Intel 7260 or something more modern through an adapter.
>>
>>69771292
The one I am using (Artix btw.)
Doesn't really matter what distro you run on it but something like debian with KDE or Kubuntu is pretty neat if you're not very experienced with GNU+Linux.
