Why ThinkPad?
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet
>Great durability: magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, high quality plastic body panels
>Utilitarian design: indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop
>Easy to repair (most models), upgrade & maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model, spare parts easy & cheap to obtain
>The TrackPoint™, great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support

There was one time I found a T20 at Goodwill back in late 2010 or early 2011, but it was so gross that I was hesitant to pick it up, let alone buy it. Like, there was enough organic material to grow a small vegetable garden in it. I COULD have rehabilitated it, but it would have been one hell of an undertaking. I later found a T40 at yard sale in the summer of 2011, it was a much better computer in every way. 1.5 GHz Pentium M, Radeon 9000, 512 MB of RAM and it was squeaky clean. Overpaid a bit ($80, which could have bought me a T60 at the time) but it satisfied my laptop fix in high school and it could even play older games like HL2 and Rome Total War very well.

I'm thinking about this too. Price difference is such that I can get an X220T, or a samsung tab A 8.0 for the same price, the only reason to get the tab is that it's much smaller and lighter, suitable for taking notes and reading ebooks/pdfs, but really that's all.
The X220T meanwhile can do practically everything, drawing, browsing, developing, note taking, reading, gaming etc etc but it's kinda mediocre at doing all of that, though ironically despite the size it's nice to have something that can do everything at such portability.

Look at the extreme sides and top, if the color shifts negatively then it's TN, plus IPS are more white so to speak, meaning if it looks bluish or grayish, then it's TN. Still, I have a T530 with the 1080p TN panel, and the color doesn't change in anyway unless viewed from extreme bottom angles

they're better in every single way. from a more tactile chicklet (le layout faggots need to be gassed, if you don't use a standard 60% with xmodmap/hotkey layers you're on the gas list) to not having a whitelist for linux-libre and openbsd.
They also take 2 9" drives like you see in my screenshot there, which is much more flexable than just one with a slow dead ssd format.

From what I assume, once that exe has done the activation process (whatever the process is) windows should be permanently active then, and so there's no worries whether defender deletes it or not? Or do I have to keep the activation exe around?
Does it work for all windows 10 versions including enterprise and LTSC?

debian is what you move to once you understand the basics and are looking for something more customisable.

grab a copy of linux mint xfce from here, get a usb stick and use rufus to install it to the usb.

https://linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=265

then power on the thinkpad with it plugged in and open the boot menu (the right key should flash up on the screen when the logo comes up) and select the usb stick and just follow the install.

Howdy /tpg/

A couple years back I bought two R61is off Craigslist and I'm finally getting around to upgrading them. Just the CPU (c2d T5*** to T8100) and RAM (2GB to 4) for now since they're the most attainable (read: cheapest) at the moment. Since I'm still using the 5400RPM drive they came with, what kind of speedup can I reasonably expect?

Last time I used them they were pretty sluggish, but to be fair my dumb ass was running KDE on them, so I imagine switching to something more lightweight will help a lot.

Also, I've read that R6* models can be upgraded to a QXGA screen, has anyone tried this? I'm pretty sure I have a 15" screen though it measures closer to 15.25".

What happens in say another 10 years form now when these thinkpads will DEFINITELY be unusable. Do you just sotp using computers because processors have fbi/cia backdoors? 0) back everything up on your computer that is important to you to an external hard drive. DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP!

1) get a usb flash drive bigger than 4gb
2) download the iso image from here

https://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/current/amd64/iso-cd/debian-9.6.0-amd64-netinst.iso

3) put the iso image on your usb stick

4) go to the library with your usb stick

5) download windisk32 onto the library computer

6) copy the isoimage from your usb stick onto the library desktop

7) use windisk32 to burn the iso image onto the usb stick

8) take the usb stick home to your computer

9) put the usb stick into your computer

10) hold down F11 as and then turn on your computer to get to the boot order screen

11) boot from your usb stick

What's the most legit replacement for "ThinkPad 12.7mm Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter III" (0A65623) that won't fuck up my Ultrabay? There's a zillion chinkshit brands selling caddies on Amazon.
Also, why the fuck did Lenovo stop making this very important part? The whole reason I got a chinkpad was because OEM parts were supposed to be readily available.

did you play pen and paper?
>>
>>69328210
Pros
- Clean look
- Can use a dock

Cons
- Can't use chinkpad screen or keep it open for good thermals
- Have to set keyboard on top of chinkpad if you want more space
- Big footprint won't leave much space unless your desk is huge

I ended up getting separate monitor and laptop stands.

Pros
- Keyboard slides neatly under monitor stand
- Can use the chinkpad screen if you want
- Smaller footprint for regular monitor stand

Cons
- Have to use hubs and adapters, which can be janky
- Need to figure out strain relief for hub/adapter/power cables

Summary: if space is at a premium or you are going to use the chinkpad screen I would get a laptop stand. You need a laptop stand because monitor stands won't raise the chinkpad screen high enough. If you only need one screen or are going to use two external monitors, then the Lenovo stand and dock is probably a better solution (with a regular monitor stand for your second monitor).

Is a thinkpad X1 overkill if I don’t ever plan on gaming or running intense programs? the most “intense” thing i would be doing with it would be having multiple chrome tabs open with microsoft word running at the same time.

More than anything I want reliability and durability.

Also what are the big differences between the X1 and T480/T580? which one would be better for me?

thanks /g/ents

i'm fucking impressed. I put out this bait post, and 150 replies later, nobody took it.
I'm buying a fucking x220 libreboot arch gnu/linux thinkpad. This is obviously a 130+ IQ general.
>>
>>69335169
This is probably bait but don't buy anything with a XX30 designation or later. Stick to XX20 and older. You're welcome.
>>
>>69320635

practice by first using it only for scrolling (nipple+middle trackpad button)
>>
>>69320635
Back when i was planning to get a thinkpad I was asking myself the same question, and I went full retard and bought the X200(T) which *only* has the trackpoint. I dove into the deep end and forced myself to use it.
And yeah your general issue can be solved with sensitivity adjustment.
