https://www.zdnet.com/article/microsofts-killer-windows-7-patch-breaks-networking-bricks-legit-not-genuine-pcs/

>The issues stem from the Monthly Rollup update, KB4480970, and the security-only update, KB4480960, for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1.

>Günter Born's Borncity was first to report the Windows 7 Genuine brick and the separate network share issues bundled in these updates.

>As Born notes, monthly rollup KB4480970 addresses a serious PowerShell flaw and adds extra mitigations for Meltdown and Spectre side-channel attacks.

>While it was prudent to patch quickly, admins discovered the update tripped up network shares over the SMBv2 file-sharing protocol. Born figured the security-only update might dodge the bugs, but he discovered that it caused the same issues.

>Born's and other reports commented that Microsoft hasn't listed the bugs as known issues on its support pages for KB4480960 and KB4480970. But Microsoft has now acknowledged the issues.

>Regarding the 'Not Genuine' Windows 7 error, Microsoft confirms that "some users are reporting the KMS Activation error, 'Not Genuine', 0xc004f200 on Windows 7 devices".

>"We are aware of this incident and are presently investigating it. We will provide an update when available," writes Microsoft on both KB4480960 and KB4480970.

You can't even disable or postpone updates on Windows 10 though.

The number of breaking updates in the last few years has to be intentional. Microsoft just does not give a fuck anymore.

You can try Debian in VirtualBox before full install. And if you have zero experience with linux, maybe try Ubuntu or Xubuntu first
>>
>>69316006
Yeah, I was thinking about installing in a VM first but I take regular backups and most of the important files I have on my external hard drives used for storing media, I can just re-install the software I have currently or find an alternative. About Ubuntu, I'll switch to Debian sooner or later so I thought I'd cut it short and just install Debian first, thanks though.

it could be because "$(xsel -b)" wasn't quoted?

I recommend the other way round:
- install Linux on a separate disk
- install virt-manager (installs QEMU for dependencies)
- dd the windows install, the whole disk
- point libvirt to that image while creating a new VM
That's it, no need to dualboot if you forgot something.

Microsoft hates Windows 7. It represents the escape route from telemetry and forced reboot hell. They are desperate to close the exit ramp by crippling Windows 7. It's just like what they did to Windows 95 when they wanted to force Windows 98 with Internet Explorer integration.
