You guys don't train for strength year-round, right? Spending at least 25% of your mesocycles building muscle to then make strong seems smart

What is this "building muscle" and how is it any different from strength training? They're the same thing. Are you talking about, like, being a dipshit who spends 3 months a year doing sets of 10 in the competition lifts?

Let me know how that goes. Fr you're always building muscles and conditioning with assistance lifts

6.5kg is a lot to cut less than 6 months out unless you really know your body. My advice would be to compete in the higher weight class.

You could try lowering your fats now up until the meet to drop a few kg and then for the rest do a water cut, i.e. drink 1-2 gallons of water throughout the day starting 48hrs from weigh in then 24hrs before stop water altogether. Your strength will likely take a hit tho
>>
>>70312079
You build more muscle when you're doing hypertrophy because you're doing twice as much volume. You're also beat to shit most of the time so you don't get as strong

Justin is strong and he'll keep getting stronger. As much as I like giving him shit, he has far more drive and dedication than 99% of people his age (more than me when I was 19). You build more muscle with sets of 8-15 while maintaining systemic strength than you do sets of 6 or less. The idea is you spend some time building muscle that way, and then you spend time training that new muscle to be strong using lets of 6 or less. Sets of 6 or less are very far from being optimal muscle building sets.

Hey guys can I get a form check?

I feel like lately it’s been spine day because my upper back has been hurting after my workouts and yesterday it persisted slightly.
I’ve been doing SS and going up 15lbs but around 180 I think is where it got hard for me. First video is 210 second is 225lb.

Going to start tripping since I am getting more serious about competing. I am the anon that tore his pec (doing bjj) that has been posting in the past few threads. Booked a tour of the PL gym closest to my house. Hoping to compete in the ~160 weight class once I finish my cut. Right now I’m doing 365 squat for one and hit 425 dead for three today at 189. Pre surgery my stats were 275/455/575 at 200.

As I continue to cut down to around 160, what are the best PL programs I can do the up my squat and dead? Right now I’m doing 5/3/1 and it’s working pretty well.

Soreness isn't the only thing that matters, it's something you see to confirm you're doing enough work. You're trying to get bigger and you do five sets of squats at rpe 8. If you're not feeling soreness in your quads the next day, you must be doing something wrong
Rep range, technique, something. Other muscles are a little different
>>
>>70315860
That's just not true. I've grown (both in size and strength) without being sore at all for the vast majority of my training. I know I'm GDE but I'm a lot stronger than most people on /fit/.

Pure mental masturbation - muh optimization.
Who cares as long as you're doing what works to get stronger and bigger. The only times I've been sore were when trying new movements or not being used to the volume, which went away pretty quickly in both cases. Even my current training, which involves me doing a pretty wide mix of rep ranges compared to what I've done for a while still has me not being sore at all.

yeah I grabbed the straps to the left there then also went up to 700 just for the outright win since a HW hit 650 too.

I know this isn't locked out but the judge said down so we take those. It's really hard to push hips through with such a massive shaft in front of you and also the yoke gets in the way.
>>

I can't believe they actually ended up using a yoke. I was hoping that they just meant axle but that's hilarious.
>>
>>70316169
being a yoke makes it not roll so grip is less of a factor than it would be for axle after all. The biggest thing about the bar size is more that it takes the technique out of the deadlift to an extent and makes it more a pure brace hard and grind kind of lift. That's why the lockout looks like it does because that's a very novel stimulus. I think it might be helpful for building that range in general.

Strawman. Squeezing out a few extra percentage points is dumb as fuck and most people aren't optimizing their diet or other factors nearly enough for it to matter.
>>
>>70316262
you have no reason to think it's only a few percent. Let Rippetoe design your program, he knows best. Squats and oats, fatso.

>>70316288
You have no reason to think it'd be a massive improvement either. If I'm making progress at a reasonable rate then training is good. Addition of other variables including soreness that wasn't there before could potentially throw training off to a severe degree. Optimizing beyond that is mental masterbation. People just need to lift consistently with something they enjoy.

In 9 days I am going to start sticking needles in my ass. I definitely don't want to do untested powerlifting, at this point I have no plans of doing tren/adrol/etc. so I wouldn't have a chance of winning. The only potential powerlifting I see in my future is that maybe I'd do USAPL sometime in 2024 if I decided to do just 1 cycle and stop.

What about strongman? How well could a moderately-enhanced man expect to do with 1-2 years of dedicated strongman training?

The hobby is fun in itself. I learned this about myself sitting on the river Tyne in Newcastle on a crisp winters day. I don't like rowing. I don't like long cardio sessions. I enjoyed winning races but I fundamentally did not like the training. I like lifting heavy! I enjoy powerlifting even if I'm mid at it.

So, if I'm having fun, why would I stop, just because I'm not going to be world champ or even a medal contender?

Thanks my guy. Did some more research and the PL gym I’m touring is actually holding a meet in early June with deadlift only. Do you think 5 plate deadlift would be competitive in the 75kg drug tested division? Pretty sure I can reach that by June at the rate I’m going

i found that i don't really like them for bench. doing them like that also takes the weight of the portion of the tricep needed for bench. it puts a lot of pressure on the shoulders/pecs that could lead to tweaking it like some of the guys I know that worked them heavy.
its also a giant pain chain 200lbs to do them.

I like dips. JM presses are elbow rape until your elbows adapt and floor press is fine but generally it's going to be an advantageous position for your triceps unless you're able to touch your chest at the bottom like me.

You may not have a good idea of how to do this but I'm curious what your first idea would be. If you were going to get back into rowing after not doing it for a few years and were gonna end up cutting 10-20kg over a year or so... what would your approach be to keeping as much strength as possible? I lift at the end of the day so no stims before training just tanks the session so its a must I think

No, after first cup I feel notably better every morning. Hell i literally didnt sleep at all one night not too long ago and that first cup still perked me right up. Could be a placebo idk. Also if you drink it black, I think it's objectively good for you. Now spamming energy drinks and caffeine tabs might be a whole different ball game. I remember it sucking when I cut back from drinking multiple thermos-fulls of coffee to 3 cuppa day. But only for like a week and it wasn't unbearable.

Woke up this this morning in a really grumpy mood. Kinda went to bed grumpy too but I'm not grumpy about the same things.

At least the sun is shining and it's a warm morning.

Squats 120kg 3x3, 1x11. Sandbagged the AMRAP set. I was good for a few more, oh well. Let's call this first week a bit of a deload... other than that, my return to low barfor the first time since November felt alright, although I reckon the knurling has scratched my back up some.

Pause squat 70kg 2x6, 3 second pause. So a coach I follow on IG suggested using a metronome to actually do a proper, full length pause in the hole. Three seconds felt like a week, but that's a spectacular tip. Still can't really count reps though. I possibly could push the weight slightly on these next week.

Cable row, leg extensions, DB BSS ab rollout. The last time I did BSS I was using the SSB and holding onto the rack, so the lack of stability on these was a challenge I need to work on. Slow eccentrics felt super good for the row and extensions, especially on my slightly janky knee tendons - it sucked at the time but my knees feel better than they have done for a while.

Managed a ski after for 5km. I'm in real danger of breaking 1000km for the season by the end of the month; I need 54km in the next 12 days. Doable.

Happy Sunday. I'm still a bit grumpy. Got an idea for a conditioning workout for tomorrow.

It's similar to a deload but it emphasizes doing more novel movements and resensitize you to what you've been doing. Also some emphasis on energy system build up.
