Help me decide what diver I should get for my collection. I currently only have a Speedmaster Moonwatch 3861. I'm considering either a Seiko 62mas SPB143, a Tudor BB58, or save up for a Rolex Submariner. It might be boring but which one of these do you think goes well with my Speedy?
>>17359699I'd get the BB58 personally. Maybe a blue one so you don't have two black dialed watches. Ultimately you should just get whichever watch you want most.
>>17359706I just have a thing for black dial watches. Feels like it fits better with everything else I wear. I looked into the blue BB58 and it's so much cheaper than Black for some reason. I've also thought about saving up and getting a sub just to get the Rolex out of the way. Sometimes the Seiko SPB143 looks so good and it's cheap compared to the other two.

it is completely pointless to wear any watch other than a quality replica rolex datejust. all of you look ridiculous with your NATO straps and giant bezels, and you check the time more frequently on your phone anywaythe only exception to this rule occurs when you have enough social clout that quietly switching to a gold day-date doesn't surprise people

I have a 20 year old $200 Seiko automatic that no longer works, is it worth it to service or at this price point does it make more sense to just get a new watch? I don't know anything about watches, but I'm looking for a Christmas present for a good friend of mine. He likes the 70s style and has been talking about wanting a watch. >>17360439Oh and I meant to ask, can I just take it to any watch repair place or should I send it to Seiko? Totally new to this.
>>17360461Any decent watch repair place should be able to repair them. Find one and ask them if they can have a look and tell you what is wrong and how much it would take to fix it.
How does the date feature work on watches? Does it just always know how many days of each month there is? Or do you have to reset it?
>>17360528On most mechanicals it just does 31 every month so you have to set it every few months. There are annual calendars that can account for all the days except February 29th on the leap year, and there are perpetual calendars who can get that right as well.
>>17360455Looking at it again are you sure it's an automatic? I'm suspecting it's a quartz and maybe all it needs is a new battery? Can you read any numbers from the watch so we can find the model online?
>>17360539Here's the back, the manual (assuming it's the correct manual) says it's a "analog quartz watch with an Automatic Generating System"
>>17360204keep in mind you probably can't hand-wind those, kinda annoying imo
What sort of income do I need to comfortably afford an entry level Rolex model around 10k? Also don’t want to appear larping even if I have some money.
It is 25% from MSRP from an authorized dealer. Still big money for me but I absolutely love the look, but this would be my first and probably only watch for some time. Should I?
>>17359699>>17359710Tbh, I'd just go try them on. Might as well buy them in person if it's not too much more money too. Not sure if your financial situation (maybe a rolex or tudor is just a casual throwaway purchase for you - no hate but it might make a difference), but a luxury watch is usually somewhat of a big purchase so I'd try and get the most out of the experience. Always feels more special when you buy it in person and you really know when a watch is for you when you try it on. To answer your question and not be a useless shitter, I'd either second the pelagos 39 or do the bb58. But a sub is a sub and if that is really what you want I'd get that. For seiko I kind of like that new slim turtle, but havent tried it on. The spb143 looks sweet but it's a bit chunky for its size and I find that thinner watches look and feel better on me personally
What is up with SBGX263, SBGX261, and AQ4020-54Y all having flat crystals? Are there any normal size GS or Citizen that actually have this extremely basic feature that even a lot of cheap shitters come with nowadays?>just buy a 48mm joke watchNo
>>17360552Ah it's a Kinetic! It has a rotor that charges the capacitor that then powers the watch. They go empty fast are known to fail quickly, especially if the watch has been sitting for some time. You should try wearing the watch for a day to try and generate some electricity to see if the capacitor is still working or not. If not it's usually not worth repairing, i don't know if someone would even know how to and be willing to repair it.
>>17360004You have a nice taste in watches.
>>17360564>extremely basic featureI usually prefer a flat crystal to a domed or bubble one, and it's not 'basic', it's more of a design choice.
>>17359819Big sundials are kino. Stick to undersized peseux 7001 and unitas 6498 sundials since watches now are either too big or too small for these movements, respectively
>>17360559Maybe if they're making like $300k+ because I make about $140k and I wouldn't wear a $10k watch, "six figures" isn't as much money as you think if you're an adult with adult responsibilities
>>17360548Oh its one of those watchesCool litte thingsSeiko still sells some as seiko kineticIt probably just needs a new rechargeable battery, i dont know how hard the specific cells it needs are to source or replace but if you search around some you can find people talking about it online. Assuming the battery is still made you can probably buy one for like $10 and then pay any jeweler $12 to replace it.
>>17360565I like it. Looks like an old 60s diverIf you don't care about the warranty and you probably dont need it you might be able to save some money buying on jomashop. You can also probably talk the AD into giving you another 10% off if you are up to it.
>>17360567>>17360575Interesting, thank you for helping me anons. That's a bummer, it sounds almost like a disposable watch, but on the flipside if I can just change a battery that'd be awesome. I called for an estimate for an automatic and got $150, I'll call back and ask about kinetics. I tried shaking it for a minute, didn't budge. I'll wear it today and report back this evening.
>>17360570I'm not asking for domed/bubble crystals, those would look stupid on that kind of watch. There is a big difference between a slight curve to avoid that harsh glare that a flat crystal gives you, and a ridiculous neo-vintage bubble. Like what they do on literally all their larger watches (picrel), what's wrong with this? The only answer is they think the customer won't spend an extra $50 or whatever it would cost to make the crystal not look cheap.
>>17360580Alright new estimate, the guy said if it's kinetic and not holding a charge it probably just needs a new capacitor and that'd be about $80-100 and take a week to order and get installed. Now I just need to decide whether the juice is worth the squeeze. Are kinetics considered to be inferior watches? I think I'll do it anyway. Thanks again anons.
>>17360572What’s your comfy price range for a watch?
>>17360575>a new rechargeable batteryIt doesn't have a battery, it has a capacitor. It's old tech and it wasn't ready yet when they made it. Now with better solar and batteries it's obsolete.
>>17360593>Are kinetics considered to be inferior watches? It was new tech at the time, combining the automatic charging from mechanical watches with quartz accuracy, but the capacitors weren't good enough yet and they went empty quickly if you weren't wearing the watch constantly, and after some time they would get 'weak' and 'tired' and would hold less and less charge.
>>17360593Meh, still kind of expensive

I suspect that most watches will over perform since I dont see the gaskets that use being vastly different between watches in the same brand. I bet it more has to do with how rigorous the quality control is for particular models rather than the watch itself (dive watches with crazy depth ratings and dress chronos aside. this neat little guy came in the mail today; this will be my first foray into DIY watch servicing. The dial and hands look great but it's hard to see with the rough crystal. Case could use some work and I'm just hoping I don't fuck up the movement. I've done disassembly now I'm waiting for the ultrasonic cleaner and cleaning solution to arrive. It's marked sindaco on the back and the dial is marked suisse de lux but I can't find any info on either name. The movement is the exact same as this: https://17jewels.info/movements/b/brac/brac-2003/So far so good. wish me luck.

What does /wt/ think about the oris aquis? Thinking of maybe picking up the green one.
>>17360886Ok but malls are still a thing where you live, so I think we just live in different realities.Sampling from my immediate circle of close family and people I see on a regular basis, here's a full account of the watches they wear daily, nothing left out because the number of shitters is actually negligible. I am only counting one watch per person, the most commonly worn watch in their rotations:>apple watch>another apple watch (different person)>yet another apple watch (also different person)>yet ANOTHER apple watch>a hamilton khaki>a GP world timer>a rolex day-date>an actual omega speedmaster>a seiko 5>a seiko skx (different person)>a cartier tank>a nomos orion>a VC patrimony>a tag aquaracer quartz lady's Or to summarize:4 apple watches, 1 high tier luxury, 7 mid tier luxury, 4 shitters. Not a whole lot of rolex either. I am leaving out the watch of one person who is a high functioning autisticus extremus, most of the other people on this list would not identify as a "watch person" but nonetheless does give a shit (like they might visit hodinkee every so often or browse the local watch boutiques when on vacation). The who I would guess doesn't really care about watches at all is the tag owner, I would bet good money she bought it because she "heard tag was good" then again my relationship with her is one of polite tolerance as I am forced to see her through a mutual, the rest of these people, except 3 of the apple watch owners, care enough about watches to meet your admittedly rather lax criterion of "knowing that PP exists" which I'm pretty sure anyone with a passing familiarity with current hip hop music would probably pass
>>17361181Oh sorry the "actual" was when I had a swatch omega on the list but decided to cull it when I switched to the "primary watch" rule
>>17361179Watch some videos about the issues with the inhouse movement version. The minute hand jumps around when you push the stem back in unless you fiddle with it the right way.Otherwise its a nice watch but you should know about the issue going in.https://youtube.com/watch?v=HZsDWiZBSgg
>>17361181You know there are still malls in large metro areas that are wealthy, right?
>she wears a watch on the left wrist>he wears his watch on his right wristwhat are other watch red flags?
>>17361108I wish I had smaller wrists desu37m looks like girls watches on my wrists
>>17361198Sure but they certainly aren't any kind of social nexus like they might have been 30 years ago. In the US at least, outside of special cases like the Hudson Yards complex, most malls are hanging on for dear life while their owners desperately shop for ways to not lose a shitload of money on them (like converting them into apartment complexes or logistics centers).
Anyone here got a Moonswatch? Haven't really seen one in person yet, always out of stock. How bad is the quality?
>>17361216I've seen one in person. They look like a toy omega, which is what they are. It's an omega-shaped swatch, not an omega for the price of a swatch.

>>17361215I know what you mean and agree in general but there are a couple malls in my area that are really still crowded. Not exactly the hangout spot but they are close to urban centers on in them. They have restaurants mixed in or near by and some of them are outdoor sort of things. So they have evolved but still are there

>>17359766>>17359766They were not worth their price back when they were new. Nowadays, they're shitty relics and maintenance is time-limited by the available supply of spare movements and parts that are no longer made. I got this in Japan a month ago. Weak yen made it irresistible. It goes well with the holidays too, I think.
>>17361974Ah the Godzilla. A bold choice, enjoy wearing it.
>>17361191Pretty much all watches that I've owned (I've lost count) have exhibited this behavior to a greater or lesser degree, the worst offender was/is a 1960s seiko lord marvel that was about as bad as the oris jumping like 3-5 minutes if you skip the "crown wiggle" technique, but even new watches do this very slightly. I'm kinda surprised that a guy who runs a watch youtube channel and calls himself an "engineer wannabe" has never run into this before.I'm not saying it should do that to such an extreme degree on a brand new, ostensibly not-cheap watch, just questioning this guy's experience with watches, considering I barely even consider myself a "watch guy" and I have a ton of experience with this.
Tissot autist here, got my grail shitter and after servicing it finally seems to be working. Some monkey had messed with it and everything was gummed up with oil but it seems good now (hopefully). Will post some pics from when I took it apart if anyone gives a shit. It's powered by the very old in-house Tissot 2031 movement with the most retarded (but fun) setting method out there.

>>17362082It's super inconvenient for setting the time but its mad fun and very satisfying to fuck around with and watch the seconds hand twirl around the dial. These movements have a super tiny stepper motor you can hear whirring away with a super rapid ticking sound when you do it too which is really neat IMO. The setting method for the hour is really cool as well if you travel a lot and need to change timezones quickly as it jumps in hour intervals that you cant fuck up if the hands are aligned correctly. That said, I probably have autism for being this fascinated with how these weird turds work but whatever lol. Here's a pic of a super bad example I bought to harvest parts from a while ago. Stepper motor can be seen on the right in pic related connected to the gear with the black corrosion all over it.If you want one, some old Buler and Lanco watches were fitted with 2030 and 2031 movements - Check eBay and you might get lucky and find a badly listed one for around 20 - 30 quid - Most Tissot examples are Seastars from the 70's and are currently bringing 50+ in non-running condition but you can find a nice one around 100 - 120 if you're patient. Sorry for the tl;dr response btw.
>>17362055Looks so much better than the PRX
>>17362071At least he isn't an ESL monkey rofl
>>17362116As someone who owns a PRX as well, I think they both have their strengths and weaknesses. The Seastar has much nicer dial finishing IMO (mine was water damaged when I got it, so it's a bad example), but the PRX has a nicer quality of finishing on the case and bracelet. The Seastar is from the 70's though, so I suppose this is really a matter of preference of modern vs vintage. One thing the Seastar absolutely mogs the PRX with is the clasp though - The PRX has a butterfly clasp with no true microadjustment outside of half-links, where the Seastar has a traditional clasp with a lot of room for microadjustment. Although I don't struggle getting a fit, why they changed this specific aspect of the watch is beyond me and it pisses me off.
>>17362055It's a fun hobby. Before my essential tremor became too much of an impediment, I would repair old watches. It was so relaxing.

>>17362321>Were are you going?London nvm
>>17362160I am going to get it serviced in the new year. I think the previous owner had it lightly polished on the clasp but nothing too badly, the Omega texture is still very feelable unlike those insanely polished ones where they're almost gone so I'm still happy with it. There's plenty of nicks and dings on the bracelet and case so it's still well preserved from 1959.
