Speaking of 33mm watches, I've been eyeing this super thin (sub-7mm) Mido with a textured dial which comes in either 33mm or 39mm. Should I go full LARP with the 33 or the 39 for a Grand Seiko on the cheap?
>>
invicta really missed the mark by not calling themselves inshitca when they started making watches again under the name. Imagine if they had invested in coming with a movement similar to an hyt but instead of dumb mountain jew fluid it was liquid shit aka diarrhea. Possibly you could customize with your own diarrhea, that of a celebrity or excrement of your favorite meal. I mean there missing the meme of wearing a literal shitter. You would think, but I've been rocking this 39mm Tissot as my dress watch and it suits my skinny (like barely over 6" skinny) wrist fine somehow. Maybe the black dial makes it seem smaller. I also ditched the weird Seamaster bracelet for a nice oiled leather strap if that matters.

when I was a teenager I had this analog/digital Fossil that had an LCD screen for a dial which displayed the number of seconds. The seconds display died at some point but the hands still kept time so I continued to wear it anyway, and I got more comments from strangers about that blank LCD watch than any accessory or garment I've ever owned
>>
>>16378814
Shavers? I ordered it because they make coffee machines and radios. It just looks good what can I say. It's not like most "watchmakers" manufactured their own cases, dials, movements, crystals, straps either. Very few do. At least braun designed this one well
>>
>>16378872
It looks like an mvmt watch, which it probably is. Dont be upset that people see your poorfag shitter as exactly that.
>>
>>16378886
No worries there mate. With things like these, how you wear it is as important if not more than what you're wearing. Nobody in their right mind would try to dress up a braun watch, but it can still look nice in a fit, no matter how
much of a shitter it is.

Say what you will about that piece of shit ticker, it's still a classic design that will get positive attention from normies and qts. Come to think of it, the biggest cope is paying 10x as much only to wow horologists and chronophiles. It's a marketing company, not a watch company. Most of their workforce are in branding and sales, that says it all. One thing that sucks about their watch is that it's glued shut, so you can forget about servicing it down the line. If you like it, just wear it without a care in the world because there is no point wondering what people think about you solios

Allegedly I'm on a 6 month "wait list" for a Day Date 36 after a positive first experience with my local AD and a deposit I've left. I'm considering going in there and trying to buy a Yacht Master 37 out of boredom with my smaller wrists, anyone have any idea if this could speed up the acquisition of my Day Date, I want it but I'd also like to begin the process of forming relationships with ADs so I can get the shit I want easier in the future. Do be expected to offer a blowjob, and don't expect the courtesy of a reach-around. Whether they actually expect you to put out is besides the point, but flowers and at least a few lunches will be required. As for a discount, with the grey market prices being what they are in this artificial bubble, expect to pay MSRP and possibly some additional fees to land your watch through the AD.
>>
>>16379728
>>16379852
What the hell am I reading.
>>
>>16379807
I'm honestly not sure. I'm doing test fittings at the moment with PVA glue and this was successful, and in the right lights looks amazing without glaze. I'm just worried about paper fibres getting into the movement.
>>
>>16379858

A facetious reply, making light of the hoops you must jump through, the money that must be spent to land a Rolex at MSRP. The games AD's play may well take much more time and effort than it is worth to land that Rolex.
>>
>>16379879

You could coat the paper dial with polyester resin to encapsulate the fibres, but that will change the look of the paper.
>>
>>16379858

...which is why so many have no trouble paying grey market prices, to avoid all of the manufacturer + AD games. Some argue that grey market represents the "real" price of Rolex, but I stand by my opinion that it is an artificial bubble created by the cartel.
>>
>>16379887
There's time to try everything; the paper place sent me like a christmas wrapping paper sized roll of this stuff so lots of experimenting before I commit.
>>
>>16378897
Pretty based.

$100-$1000 range is megacope territory
>>
>>16378972
It's a homosexual hipster thing. They use it to identify each other
>>
>>16379893
I would soak one piece with resin, and laminate multiple pieces together on top/below to absorb the resin and obtain some strength. Trim to shape after cure. If you have just enough layers to bond them together without saturating the top layer of paper, you may get the look you are after combined with sealing the fibres on the back side and avoiding completely translucent paper.
>>
>>16379887
>>16379893
Don't use polyester, it yellows within a couple of years. If you want to use resin, try epoxy. I would also sandwich your paper and dial and clamp that under as much pressure as possible to flatten the paper a little while the glue is drying because it looks like the fibres may have swollen some from the moisture in the PVA glue you've used.
Do something like that : take something flat and solid (polishes stone countertop, metal, glass, it don't matter) then put your piece of paper, dial with glue on top of the paper, then a piece of insulating foam so the feet of the dial won't bend or break, then stack heavy books on top of everything, or better yet some weights or a few clamps. Can't wait to see your project take shape
>>
>>16379852
All the people I dealt with at this AD were women and they seemed to like me considering I'm not ugly, poor or too retarded, they responded positively to me explaining that I was looking at Day Date as first Rolex since childhood despite still looking like a teenager, I'm hoping they see me as a walking dollar sign for future business since I have many years ahead of me and am already capable of buying decent shit, do you think I'll be able to get this fucking thing within 6 months? I'm bored of waiting, it's been like 2 months already
>>
>>16379893

If you lay up your paper/resin (which needs a catalyst to cure) on something like plastic wrap, then cover with more plastic wrap, put under something heavy and flat like a book, it should cure flat. It is an exothermic reaction, so it will get warm, cure, and then cool down.
>>
>>16379912

Epoxy resin turns yellow as it ages ;).
>>
>>16379917

Unlikely, but wish you all the luck in the world.
>>
>>16379922

I have done casting with both polyester and epoxy resins, and I would definitely experiment with the polyester resin for a project such as this. There is a "crystal clear" resin used by ship modellers for dioramas, which may also be worth a shot.
>>
>>16379879

https://notaglue.com/

Bondic is a UV cure product that may coat/encapsulate without changing the look of the paper too much.
>>
>>16379924
They've sent me a message with a picture of a day date 36 but with the retarded diamond bezel and turned it down, is that at least a positive indication that I'm not entirely forgotten?
Would offering to buy a Yacht Master 37 I don't really care about at MSRP instead of discount help in any way? I just want this fucking Day Date, I appreciate the anonymous feedback either way, I'm not exactly surrounded by people that could provide feedback on this
>>
>>16379937

Buying several pieces you don't want is what will (eventually) get you the piece you do want. You'll have to weigh the cost of playing the "will I eventually get the watch I want" game against the inflated grey market price, which is a slam dunk.
>>
>>16379937

If I only wanted one specific Rolex, I wouldn't pad the collection with watches that simply will not get the wrist time they need to justify the purchase in order to get the watch I do want.

>>
>>16379954

They are feeling you out, and will need to know you'll
a) keep the watch
b) service the watch
c) not be flipping the watch
d) be willing to spend a boatload of money in the way of repeat business in order to get the watch
>>
>>16379954

>>
>>16379922

>>

Forget about a discount. Buying a ym would put you back on the radar, but do you really want one? If you flip it, there's a chance you'll get caught. Just drop back by the store if it's been a few months. Thank them for calling you, look at all the other shitters, talk about watches, etc. Be sure to wear something sexy. Have you left social media reviews? You don't have to buy anything to say how Susan is such a great employee, etc.
>>
>>16379962
OP here - my first thought was this craft glue Diamond Glaze - water-based (I actually don't think I mind if the fibres swell, that would make for a nice look potentially)

A lot of hobbyist jewellers seem to use it and that's basically how I see this dial, like one of those pendants 80 year old retirees make except it's going in a watch

That said I have never built a watch before so thanks for all the recs

When asked how long I was interested in buying Rolex I instinctively answered since I was a kid and the woman instinctively responded with a genuine "aww", and after the deposit was finished she excitedly acknowledged that my first Rolex would be a "President", I left that day feeling confident I was going to get the watch on time, it wasn't until I started reading online where I saw all these people complaining they were on these crazy multiyear waitlists and they're never getting a watch
Basically I know they know I'm not a flipper and I went in there knowing what I was talking about, with a 36mm that fits me appropriately, does it sound like I still have a shot, man
Would the YM37 help out with at least getting my ass back in front of them to refresh their memory of me?
>>16379966
I don't flip, that's why I'm only interested in buying things that are appropriately sized for me, I wouldn't mind the YM because I would end up getting one anyway, Rolex doesn't have a huge selection for 38mm and below, all of it can be covered by buying different Day Dates I like and perhaps a YM37 as a casual watch, I'm still young and don't have any sexy watches yet, I only have Seiko tier shit and a Junghan dress watch so far
>>
>>16379959
this.

The luxury watch industry is all a scam, you want a specific watch, and if you tell them you want that watch, they will force you to buy everything but the watch you want until they decide to let you buy the one you wanted in the first place.
>>
>>16379978
A presiden is just the name of a specific style of bracelet, not the watch the bracelet is attached to.

I've build stitch and glue fibreglass sailboats out of epoxy and made custom furniture for showrooms using polyester. Maybe it's just the marine stuff, but in my experience, epoxy resin smells faintly like
a cake baking while poly smells like you're dunking your head in a bucket of hair curling solvants. It also turn a honey/amber colour within a season while epoxy stays crystalline for a few years. Again, my experience is limited to marine stuff so I'm willing to say we may both be right.
I've also done molds with smooth on silicone rubber and have seen their resin samples. I'd bet that's the best option for a hobbyist doing some prototyping in their kitchen/garage, considering price and ventilation etc. I second that you should go with it, japanese paper dial
boy
>>
>>16379983
I know that, and the woman at the AD literally called it that anyway
>>
>>16379974
You could also try some neoprene glue (3M spray) just spray some most on the dial and paper, wait for the glue to dry and then stick the paper to the dial - there's no water so no risk of fibres swelling (I know you say you don't mind but from that picture it looks a bit out of control) and no need to
put too much pressure while the glue sets. Just a thought
>>
>>16379978
Just buy an Invicta, they look like a Rolex, as many of their watches are direct homages of classic rolex designs (people who say clone or ripoff don't understand, that Invicta has paid licensing and has permission to use Rolex's visual designs), their automatic watches with the Seiko nh35a movement are as reliable as the sun, and they cost only around 100$ - 300$ depending on the specific model. And you can order them from their official amazon page and get the watch you want at your door step in only about a week.

Ignore the rage poster who will inevitably reply to this post with irrational anger, he's just a weirdo who is physically incapable of keeping his autism to himself.

>>
>>16380015
No you wouldn't and yes I am. Invicta makes some very nice watches, for a thousanth of the price of the Rolex version. Anyone who thinks otherwise is just a fanboy. Unless you're after the specific engineering of a Rolex movement, I don't see the point in buying a Rolex. You can't wear it, they're too valuable. Everyone I know who owns a Rolex keeps it in a safe or safety deposit box, and if that's what people do with them, then what's the point?

You can't, it's ruined. They make little dimples to mount the diamonds in.

I was thinking of using a stainless based watch, because it would be easer to repair than gold or brass, by spot welding over the dimples and then grinding and polishing them back smooth, but this might leave permanent discoloration in the metal in little circles all over the surface, but that might actually create a neat looking effect when polished to a mirror finish.

You can use uv stabilised resin so you don't get the yellowing over time. And a nice way to check how the dial will look after resin, lacquer or clear coat is spray it with alcohol. How it looks like with the alcohol misted over it is how it will look when it is saturated with resin. The alcohol should evaporate off before reacting with anything on the dial.

You can always sand it off if it looks shit and start again. The material on the actual dial can make it looks weird if it goes translucent once it has resin on it, so if you are doing anything white, you might need to tint some resin and paint it on beforehand. I make prosthetics and orthotics out of composites
>>
>>16380510
Alcohol preview is a good idea, we do the same thing with furniture. How do you iv stabilise resin? Is it an additive or a special resin altogether?
These are real nice. Did tou paint the mold before laying in the carbon fibre or is it airbrushed after it came out of the mold or is it something else? I'm curious about that colouring process. Gel coat and spraying polyurethane is the only thing I known to do over composites
>>
>>16380525
I just brush on left over resin from one of my 3d printers (I have like 10 now not all of them being used some are parts machines only) and cure + clear.

Idk about what kind of epoxy home carbon fiber molders use my carbon pieces were pre-impregnated with resins that I had to vacuum form when I worked ony cars
>>
>>16380479
Meh can’t win them all
>>
>>16380533
We use big bags, forgot what they're made of but they feel kinda like how thick vinyl does, and hook them up to an air pump so the fibre conforms to the mold. Sounds pretty much like the process you're using.
How do you attach the velcro and hardware though? More resin or rivers or what?

I'm actually not too sure about uv stabilised resin, the uv stabilised resin I have at work is for infusions under vacuum. The lamenting resins I have aren't uv stabilised, you should be able to get some laminating resin that won't yellow. I think the glass on the watch would probably filter out a decent amount of uv energy so it isn't an issue though, I'm not sure about it though.

I usually have a plaster cast, I pull a flexible pva bag over, you wet the bag and make it pliable and it dries without any creases. Sometime I have a 3d print that I fill with plaster so it doesn't collapse under vacuum. I either paint it with pva liquid or pull a pva bag over it. I lay the carbon up on it, using 3m spray glue (not sure which one of the top of my head, one that is the least likely to impact the resin matrix. Once the carbon is on there, I will using a 12k carbon sleeve as a last to give it a carbon look, but if they want it a certain colour or a pattern, I will tint it white first, since the carbon is so dark. And do another infusion with tinted resin or a fabric, the fancy stuff on the outside is literally generic fabric I get from the craft store. To actually infuse the resin, I prick a whole down the bottom of the first pva bag (don't have to do anything to it if I used pva liquid) so the vacuum will suck the first bag tight against the mould after I pull a pva bag the whole thing. I have a jig that holds it all nice while I put it under suction and string the resin down, sometimes I have to turn it upside to try and get air that is hiding around some the hardware I install between the carbon. I cut it out and try to demould it, but it is usually too stiff, so I usually have to chip the plaster out

I think the best way to try and do an interesting dial is to use a flat sheet of the material you intend to make the dial with, and then cut it out buff it to size. But most people wouldn't have the equipment to do that

These are both quite different and bretty weird, I think I slightly prefer the look of the accutron but the fact that it is an accutron with a tuning fork logo yet uses a balance wheel movement just makes no sense. It's like 3 layers of brand seppuku deep.

The Eterna is neat, but loud in a way that may limit it's practicality a little bit, and the dial finishing looks garbage.

$1500 is a tough price range, it's a bit of a dead zone where you don't get a lot more than you would for something half that price - say something from tissot in the 300-700 range.

Best bet in this territory is microbrands, but what a crapshoot in terms of resale value haha.

Spot on man. I wish they just used a bulova uhf quartz in the Accutron. I love the style of the KonTiki, but it's a pretty big 42mm. I'm not actually that familiar with it. It does sound like it could be exactly what you need. Using resin and composites is for pretty hard wearing stuff. >>
>>16380771
new watch brand. they're cutting out the middle man and passing the savings on to you
>>
>>16380756
Yup thats it, thanks anon I appreciate it. I only tried googling “square omega watch” and didnt get anything, i hate being retarded
>>
>>16380772
boys i just put the captcha in the text field by accident its no deep mystery lmao
>>
>>16380189

I do not- you'll have to see where it goes. Auctions are funny- may or may not make reserve, or may skyrocket past it into "poor choice" territory.
>>
>>16380913
I know. It is under reserve right now. :(
>>
Anyone have experience with vintage omega geneves??? shit looks beautiful and good examples can be found around 5 or 600 cad
>>
>>16380915

I know I want one, and depending on its service history it may take some $$$ approaching purchase price to put right. The safest bet would be to find one that has recently been gone through by a watchmaker at a price you are good with.
>>
>>16380925
There are many on ebay and chrono 24 around 6 or 7 that have been serviced. Thats a great deal imo as long as theres a photo of the case back opened up and shes clean.

legit
>>
>>16380934

There are a few local to me, priced relatively reasonably in Canadian Pesos.
>>
>>16380944
I am considering getting one of those (on an integrated) rather than a tissot prx powermatic 80. I have no vintage watches but i have 8 new ones, I am still uncertain if getting into vintage is a good idea. How much does maintenance cost on a vintage?
>>
>>16380936
>https://www.chrono24.ca/omega/geneve-cal-601-serviced--id19036952.htm

Looks to be a nice piece, a few age spots on the dial (expected for something almost as old as I am).
>>
>>16380946
Right? and theres a whole dearth of them at this price point
>>
>>16380945

The best estimate would be to contact a local watchmaker, run it past him for a quote on basic service with no surprises. A good mechanical from that time period can theoretically last more than a lifetime when regularly serviced, and regular service history would suggest something that wouldn't need major disassembly to replace worn parts. Markings are usually inscribed inside the caseback by a watchmaker at time of service. The worst thing you can do is run a vintage mechanical for long periods without regular service/lubrication- that is when you'll find jewels in need of replacement, bushings worn out of round, and vintage hard parts requiring complete replacement. Mo markings inside the caseback often equals no service. If the previous owner(s) didn't give a crap, there may be some expensive surprises for the eventual owner who wants to use it as-intended.
>>
>>16380945

I don't universally hate on Tissot like you'll often read on this board. I have seen some people rave about the PRX Powermatic 80, people who have some higher-end pieces and are not garden variety po' folk. I have one Tissot, and my eye on a couple more, and as long as you realize what they are (lower tier Swiss mechanicals or quartz) and are OK with that, you could certainly do worse. The problem is, there are watches for not much more that are considerably nicer per extra dollar spent.
>>
>>16380953
I cant just ask a watchmaker to check out an ad and tell me if its any good? Unless if I promise Ill get some service from him? Its a good idea im just not sure about execution, but I dont know any AD people or any watchmakers.
>>
>>16380957
yes they do occupy a strange range. What do you reccomend for around 1500 that might be comparable? I am not interested in Hamilton, but I certainly do like the vintage omegas...

the powermatic looks like the best choice for integrated bracelet and also I love the textured blue dial. Looks very nice and I think it would match my style.
>>
>>16380958

I wouldn't go AD for something like that, but what I would do is approach a local watchmaker, tell him you are thinking about buying a specific vintage piece with unknown service history...there is a good chance he'll know if there are any specific pitfalls with a given movement you should be aware of, and can give you a ballpark quote on cost to service barring any surprises. Almost anything can be repaired/restored and brought back to life, but whether it is cost effective for a new (to you) piece with no sentimental attachment is an entirely different story.

^^ this would be a good place to put out feelers (if you are Canadian) before buying. You have to register to see content.
>>
>>16380963
thats some good advice, I catch your drift for sure. Warm regards thanks. If you are the tissot anon, what watches do you have and how has been your experience?
>>
>>16380961

Being a bracelet and/or strap guy who likes to change between the two on a whim, not the best resource for integrated bracelet watch advice- I tend to gloss over those. For new, you could scroll through Mido's site and see if anything strikes you. Then there are the microbrands. Spinnaker may have something that appeals to you.
>>
>>16380972
I have done like 2 weeks of research, thus far the Tissot really checks the boxes. Blue textured dial and integrated bracelet, very 70s, dress-sporty. And the 80hr power reserve is fantastic. Only issue is that it would have to be serviced by tissot; but buying from them they give u a free service. ill check out spinnaker atm
>>
>>16380969

I have an older (smaller dial) PRC200 that has been flawless, has been in rotation for 9 years. I first saw it overseas, and managed to find the discontinued model at a healthy discount from a local AD. I am going to pick up a Heritage Visodate, mostly because I've loved the automatic version since its release. Most of my watch acquisitions will not be Tissot, as some of their styling cues on their stainless sports watches in my wheelhouse lean towards 44-46mm cases.

https://en.yema.com/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIp8Cxx8z48QIVbhmtBh2FqAC6EAAYASAAEgJN5PD_BwE

A few Yemas have a 70's vibe, but not so much a dress watch.
>>
>>16380979
I see, I defs dont like the majority of their pieces for that reason too. But i would be happy to have one for sure
>>
>>16380983
they have a good sale. I like that chrono. Site gives 15 % off and its like 300 USD. Do you have any experience with these? Why did it come to mind? Defs a good way for a cheap chrono but I would not buy one without a discount as it has now

I was leaning towards a Yema Speedgraf for a while, and towards a discontinued Heritage Flygraf (attached), but ultimately went a different way.
>>
>>16380998
the dials are just a little busy, and I feel like I would be adding another shittter to my collection. I think 8 shitters is enough, and I want to get some real swiss stuff or a vintage swiss. But then again there are some nice Yemas esp. the chronos
>>
>>16381001

I wasn't looking at their quartz offerings. Only autos.

https://windupwatchshop.com/collections/watches

^^ saw them here

They ship to Canada, will allow shopping in CDN, and carry a wide variety of brands not easy to find here. A subsidiary of Worn & Wound.
>>
>>16381004
that and the discounts right now are enticing. good eye anon
>>
>>16381001

Then you wouldn't like what I bought instead. German, with a tried & true Swiss movement. Very busy chrono dial.
>>
>>16381006
perhaps I would, for a chrono its gotta be, those blank faced mvmt chronos are fucking kek-worthy
>>
Integrated bracelet, but with (maybe) a too-modern dial

Came across some dope looking unimatics.. any idea on those?
>>
>>16381014

Circa '63 German aviator styling that is mostly still true to their 60's offerings.
>>
>>16381018

A microbrand, made in Italia. Mecha-quartz movement. They appear to be nicely made with excellent case dimensions and materials, but at the moment mostly nly have renderings to go by. I would be "in" to try one of those.
>>
Do check out Halios (Vancouver). Only two models, but both have a vintage vibe.

Can the chrono actually be used underwater?
>>
>>16381163
Obviously no since you have to unscrew the pushers. Probably you can on a frogman or other digital divers.

Something about this little Japanese shitter really speaks to me. Anyone got one/know much about them? Hardly expensive so I might just cop

What is some inspo for cool quartz sportwatches

I have a Sinn 556 but I cycle to work most days and some of the roads I go on are awful so I tend to wear that on when I'm not biking.
>>
>>16379983
Everybody knows that, but since 99% of the times the president bracelet is exclusively used on the day date model (they also used it in daytonas, datejust etc...), everybody calls the day date the president.
Stop being a smart ass, only makes you look retarded.

I saw somewhere saying that omega gave those watches for free with that custom blue origin strap.
Is true that omega initially won the space race, but now is just omega milking muh moon landing.
Imagine paying for the speedmaster and then omega gives them for free to the richest people in the world, honestly for me is a marketing flop.
>>
>>16381288
>Work hard to be pretty decent
>Get a lucky break
>Milk that sucker for life

That's pretty much the formula for success right there

I know that, It's pretty obvious that omega for example pays Cindy Crawford and her daughter to wear their watches, but one thing is giving them to some random actress/model etc other is giving free watches to the richest people in the world, specially Jeff Bezos with all the amazon controversies.

Nice 666. Look into art deco and sector dials, similar to the VC fifty six. Longjeans heritage classic, Baltic sector and Vario empire from microbrands.
>>
>>16381207

Yes, serious price creep. Everything has become more expensive lately.
>>
>>16379473
A lot of cheaper watch brands copy the simpler Patek designs that originated with Patek ie. Calatrava
