What are some watches you originally had a distaste for, but grew to like?
And vice versa?
>>
>>15981688
Rolex
Thought it was overpriced bullshit for the tasteless morons with more money than sense.
Realized it's actually just an entry level watch and real watches cost even more so it's only natural that everyone buys a Rolex as their first luxury watch and there's really no sense in buying anything cheaper until you get down to a G-Shock because everything else is a massive compromise that's worth nothing in the eyes of everyone from the experts to the plebs.

It's a sad fact but I'm poor and I'll never be able to afford anything good so I shouldn't really envy better people, it's my fault that I got into this situation and that I'll never get out of it and no matter how hard I try to find some "smart"
option that's still "respectable" but it's just not happening if you don't pay the amount of money needed for a real luxury watch, there are no shortcuts, gotta pay your dues.

The popular models all cost upwards of 10k. For that money you can get a solid gold Vacheron or Lange.

Cartier - I thought they just made fashion watches.

Omega - I thought they were a high end watch brand. Turns out most of their watches are mediocre quality and look cheap in person.

Rolex - I though they were expensive simply because of brand name and marketing and not worth the money. I was very wrong. They make daily wear watches you can put on your wrist and not worry about for the next 10 years. They are luxury in the best sense of the word.

GS - I'll get shit for this but while that are good they aren't the god-tier watch weebs say they are.

>Rolex - I though they were expensive simply because of brand name and marketing and not worth the money. I was very wrong. They make daily wear watches you can put on your wrist and not worry about for the next 10 years. They are luxury in the best sense of the word.

Rolexes are definitely not worth the money.
Their external finishing is a joke, and their movement finishing is non-existent.

>>15981733
>while that are good they aren't the god-tier watch weebs say they are
>>
>>15981736
External finishing to a autistic macro level isn't everything. My experience with Rolex is they still look very well finished to the human eye and touch but you also get great built quality and reliability and iconic designs. They are watches that just work and work well. You might think they are expensive, they are, but no one getting a Rolex at retail price today are going to say they are not worth the money.

>>15981739
Here in the real world that makes no difference to the buying public.
>>
>>15981747
A Submariner case for instance is basically a box.
A GS case has intricate geometry, hairline polished bevels, contrasting polishing/brushing with sharp borders between them, facets, ...

It's not just about the macro level, and it's not just about the level of polish.

i want to buy my old man a watch for his birthday next week
my budget is $500, and i think he really likes dive watches with metal straps. something like pic related.

>>15981749
Which is a completely subjective opinion. If you prefer GS design then good for you but many, many people like how Rolex watches look.

The difference between a box and an intricate geometric form is very much objective.

Anon.
The sides go straight down and the top goes flat. There isn't even a bevel anymore like the Sub used to have.

The case has an extremely simple, boxy shape.

additionally look at the clasp when you buy the engineer bracelet. some have a stamped steel clasp, some have milled. milled is usually the more expensive one and it's more luxurious. the bracelet replaces the stock rubber the watch comes on and it both looks and feels amazing.

Have you guys scratched your minerals?
I just realized with my SNK I had since I was in school (almost a decade ago), where it was my only watch for years at a time, that I would take out to everything including exercising and snowboarding, it's still in great condition. Maybe I can see scratches if I held it up to better lighting, but I don't get how other people get their watches to an allegedly illegible state.

what do you think of this one (ssc495p1)?
>>
>>15981809
citizen uses a higher quality movement and a dive watch is actually practical and simple, while your dad will most likely never actually use a chronograph so it's just pointless clutter and additional expense. that seiko looks like any number of mall watches your dad could just buy himself, whilst I recommended those citizens because they have a more unique styling without being too out there, so it's a little more special. I also believe all of them use blue lume which is rarer at these price points and has a cooler look to it.

damn, your jewelers is selling mall shit. they don't have anything really nice on there, this is all watches a mom would buy her son.
if they cannot order one of those watches for you, and your dad is into automatic watches, then you could follow this guy's suggestion >>15981816 and get a zelos. they offer incredible value for money with great dials but your dad has to like automatics. they offer DHL shipping and I believe DHL express = under 5 days anywhere in europe pretty much
>>
>>15981688
5-10 years ago I used to hate modern Omega with a fiery passion for being made to comparable external quality standards to TIssots and having movements that ate themselves while being priced like quasi-Rolex competitors and having a design catalogue still largely stuck in the 1990s nadir of modern watch design.

The Swatch Group has since made a legitimate effort to improve Omega's external finishing and the 8500 movements don't seem as prone to eating themselves. Omega's a lot less terrible today than they were 10-15 years ago as a result.
>>
>>15981841
well there is another one, but they only sell high end watches. i think the cheapest one they have there are around 1000.
if i don't find a legit looking online shop i guess I'll just settle for one of the mall watches.
>>
>>15981851
dude no
no watch is better than a mall watch
or just tell your dad his gift got delayed in shipping and get him something else
>>
>>15981785
Not the person you are replying too, but you are misunderstanding the point. No one is arguing which designs you should subjectively like, but it is inarguable that Grand Seiko is doing considerably more external finishing work on their cases, dials, hands and bracelets than any of their competitors at an even vaguely comparable price point.

https://www.siebeljuweliers.nl/horloges/citizen/citizen-herenhorloge-promaster-marine-bn0150-10e-rubber-zwart
if you want something more "regular" then this is not a dive watch but is quite tasteful and sporty, also titanium so it's incredibly light but some people may not like that because normal people think weight = better
https://www.siebeljuweliers.nl/horloges/citizen/citizen-herenhorloge-super-titanium-bm7470-84e-titanium-zilver
the citizen promaster diver does not come with a bracelet, only a rubber strap, you will have to buy a 20mm bracelet. or you can just buy a 20mm leather strap. I would recommend this because the stock strap is extremely tooltastic with diving tables written on it. I don't know where you buy bracelets in the netherlands but you should be able to find some place that sells them online, they all come from china, they should be 30-50 euros. if it won't come in time just get leather or "sailcloth' style strap.

This.
Omega is trying so hard to overcome their 80's and 90's badness that they're actually putting out really good pieces and making good use of new materials and new technologies.

Reposting from last thread for ideas. I recently won a lot of money gambling (mostly esports) and want to get something cool.Willing to spend up to 5k maybe more. Pic related is my daily wearer. I'm thinking something with a white face, 37 or 38mm. Doesn't have to be white but it'd be nice. I was thinking Nomos but idk. This particular movement came in 3rd place at the 1948 Concours de Chromoetrie and features a large brass/invar Guillaume balance, mounted by a blued steel Breguet spiral, and it is stamped twice with the Geneva seal, reflecting the absolute highest caliber movement Patek ever put into a wristwatch case. Considering these movements are tested and compete in small wooden boxes, it was up to Champion to pick his case, and he chose reference 2458 (modified to fit this movement, of course) and in platinum.

>>
>>15983416
Wouldn't some fucking bongs emitting from your watch be infinitely ruder and more noticeable than just sneaking a peek at the time? An hourly chime is also different from bonging on command.
Yeah I get it it's a stupid watchmaker flex like memebillons but those at least have some kind of theoretical reason for existence while there is no actual excuse for minute repeaters.
>>
>>15983433
If you're being looked at when addressed, head and eye movement is more noticeable than someone "stretching" their hand.
It's a light chime, not a fucking gong. You're probably the only person who is even going to register the sound.
>>
>>15983441
I have heard minute repeaters and I assure you, if I am mid-conversation with some guy and some chimes start sounding I'm going to ask what the hell that is. It's a historical holdover. Minute repeaters in pocket watches would buzz or vibrate meaning that you could just press the button on the pocket watch while leaving it in your coat. Quite brilliant actually. Back when this was pioneered lume didn't exist either, meaning a minute repeater was your only shot at finding out what time it was in the dark. It also was obviously extremely useful for the blind.
>>
>>15983502
>>15981686
What pocket watches are effay?
>>
>>15983502
OK that makes sense. I can accept that.
I was trying to rationalize what the point of this shit was outside of flexing because the whole reason the wristwatch exists is so that you can just look at your wrist and tell the time and not have to count bongs.
>>
>>15983455
Enjoy your government tracking botnet anon!
Pro tip- never install the Bluetooth app, it sucks shit and will drain your phone battery, also then the you will be trackable by the Bluetooth signal emitting from your wrist.
Thw watch doesn't the app for anything it's just a dumb botnet gimmick.
It's still the best square model to buy because the new screens are much better and the module has some nice features that the old solar model didn't have, like showing the current time while you are on thw stopwatch or countdown screens.

Yes, it doesn't make sense to make them currently really. I don't know what the people are talking about above - the chime of a minute repeater is 100% more noticeable than just quickly checking your wrist in a meeting.

Thoughts are buy what you like. You probably don't know enough about the guts of a watch yourself so it's not really much better to listen to someone else form an opinion for you, and they're not the only aspect that makes a watch.
>>
>>15983930
I'm thinking of the new one which looks like that and uses the new calibre but is wider to compensate. Anyway the 2500 movements have an issue where they start wearing out quickly because they can only be lubed a certain amount and after 5 years it starts going and the wear racks up. So it's fine but you need to service it regularly which kind of makes the whole co-axial gimmick useless since that is supposed to extend service times.
If you don't care about that and you like the watch, buy it.

That's not bad. Bracelet not my thing and overall not what I'd put my own money towards.

I dunno dude, I feel like there's almost no scenario where you couldn't get away with wearing a Seamaster today. And they are so much more interesting and better looking watches

Looks like a $400 watch at best really. Nothing but polished surfaces, all soft edges, etc.

>one day it clicked that it's the superior trinity steel sports watch.
I agree with a ton of caveats. I’d take a 15202st over most Nautiluses and Overseas, but the bog standard 15400 or whatever the entry model is now is just dogshit.

It kinda bugs me that the Jumbo doesn't have a seconds hand. If it did, it would be perfect.

some of the ball watches look nice. There's one that looks so good apart from the massive squared loom numerals

I went back and forth on this one; the first two stages I was exactly like you, but since then I've moved back to seeing the Overseas as the superior design.
And this is largely based off my own genuine spontaneous reactions to spotting them in the wild, unexpectedly.

The RO is just too gimmicky and flashy with its bolts and sharp corners. Also the bracelet looks like a triangle from the side because it's so wide at the watch head and tapers so very dramatically.

The Overseas is just a much "nicer" looking watch overall.
