As I sit here having just completed assembling my brand new Cinelli Tipo Pista, I can't help but be in awe of the aesthetics of its Italian engineering and design, and how it almost looks like a work of art.

So this begs the question; are bicycles /fa/?

>i think the fixie/single speed trend has been dead.
>i see more people on vintage road bikes now

I don't care what trends are dead or alive or what the cool kids are riding right now. We're in the middle of a severe bicycle shortage. Everyone got the bright idea to buy one to avoid public transportation when the rona hit. Parts manufacturers had to close their plants. Then a lot of people got laid off or furloughed from work and decided to give cycling a try as well. A lot of bike shops are clean out of bikes and the ones that do have them, you have to pre-order them like a new gaming console and wait on a list. I myself had to import one from Europe and still had to wait a month on a wait list.

Anyway, the point is, if you can find a bike right now that fits your size, you take what you can get or you won't be riding one at all.

Even women are getting in on the action:

>Why Women Are Biking in Record Numbers in N.Y.C.
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/07/nyregion/nyc-biking-covid-women.html

However...

>>15725897

I'm not a "fixiefag". I haven't been on a bike since 1991. After doing some research, a fixie seemed like a good deal for daily commuting because of the low maintenance. My first bike was a fixie, so it was also worth it to get one because of the familiarity.

Lastly, I'll be riding in NYC. It's a law here that your bike has handbrakes. Most cops don't care, but there are some who will ticket you if they're bored or just want to powertrip on someone.

the biggest parts manufacturer for bicycles is in japan, shimano. japan isn't locked down and corona isn't even a thing now in japan.

>decreased maintence

this is a meme, i haven't touched my litespeed in months and it runs clean

there are some really nice high end bikes with electronic shifting, hydro brakes, etc that require less maintence

i've had road bikes sinc 2012 or so and i mistakenly built a fixie from the ground up. and it wasn't good at anything.

the few times i took it to the san diego velodrome it wasn't even that fun

ebikes that you build yourself are faster than motorcycles now, the ones where you buy an electric motorcycle. and then just ride it around like it's a bicycle

the problem is that sometimes you lose the lottery and the chink who built your li-ion battery pack fucks up and your house catches on fire

but you can buy store bought slower e-bikes

When you say faster are you just talking about acceleration? That's great and all, but what about 200kph pulls on the highway
>>15726632
>literally has bicycle tires
That would be up there with my reasons for not getting one.
>>
>>15726632
they're getting better.

>no insurance
>same speed as most entry level gas bikes but looks like a bike
>no registration
>no smog
>no oil changes

>literally $50 bicycle tires not $350 motorcycle tires that need a mounting machine and balancing

>range
>can hook up to non-tesla rd party car charging ports
>or ask your boss if you can charge at work just don't tell him you're charging a 8Kwatt electric motorcycle on a trek frame and he won't know

>>no insurance

Kek, just wait, the jews are never far behind.
>>same speed as most entry level gas bikes but looks like a bike
What do you mean exactly, cause again, they might out accelerate a motorcycle, but acceleration isn't everything.
>>literally $50 bicycle tires not $350 motorcycle tires that need a mounting machine and balancing
Kek, cmon there's a reason those tires are expensive and require balancing. And you can mount your own tires.

When electric becomes better they'll definitely be a more viable option, but electric bicycles won't replace motorcycles, electric motorcycles might do that, but not electric bicycles.
>>
>>15726642
a lot of the bikes featured in that video are outdated. 2015/2016 models

these days ebikes run better batteries, better motors mid-drive. avg diy performance is 0-60 in a under 2.5 seconds

so.. it doesn't look like it in videos because thy're so quiet but....for about $7500 on a bicycle, no license or insurance needed you'll be doing 0-60 faster than a lambo or a ferrari
>>
>>15726660
You keep saying faster, when you mean acceleration.
Even 2020 top of the line electric bicycles aren't going triple digits or maintaining that for hours.
Makes them great if you live in a city though. Until someone smashes into an old lady and the family demands registration for them
>>
>>15726663
yes, quicker.

you can't fit enough batteries or gear a bike hub well enough to maintain 100+ mph speeds.

but, lets be honest. a cbr300rr can't do 100+ with most riders anyways

you're stepping u to 600cc or even liter bike territory.

yea if you buy a ducati track bike you'll have a race bike that can't realy run on the street or have a kick stand...

for $7500, and no other costs, no registration or insurance you have...a bicycle...that's faster than a ferrari...that you can roll into your cubicle
>>
>>15726673
>you're stepping u to 600cc or even liter bike territory.
Ok, but you're making it sound like that's fast or something? A 600cc bike is pretty average. and kek what do you mean "even litre bike territory" As if you need some go machine to be able to do 100mph.
My GS500 can do 180kph(110mph) and cruise at 150kph just fine.
And if you don't want to do 100+, fine let's look at just your average highway speed, 60mph.
You would be retarded to go on the highway with an electric bicycle for any real amount of time.
And 7500 is a lot of money. That'll buy you a decent SV650.
>no registration or insurance
That's true, for now, and I'd say the main reason to get one.
>.a bicycle...that's faster than a ferrari...that you can roll into your cubicle
Saying it's faster than a Ferrari is so ridiculous, it will beat it off the line, then seconds later get passed when it hits its top speed.

this feels like a conversation i had with my mom in 2012 about 3d printing.

a year later i visted her with something i printed (and it opened her eyes)

maybe the answer is to build an ebike

then have people ride it since a quite bicycle whipping around isn't impressive.

most people don't have sport bikes that ride, so an ebike is faster than most bikes on the road....

like a chopped cb750 or an xs650...not hitting 100mph. 80's sportster....not hitting 100mph unless rebuilt

honda goldwing lazy-boy cruiser, not hitting 100 mph....

anything sub 600cc from the japbike makers probably not hitting 100mph+

keep in mind, most high end german sportscars are also ecu-limited to 115mph.

a modified ebike can hit 70mph....not for long...but you can legit go on the freeway with one. its a bicycle though so it's not legal.

you're right some idiot is going to kill themselves on one, but right now it's like 3d printing...the low IQ fuck tards aren't adopting the tech

I didn't want to blow a lot of cash going in. This is my first bike since 1991. I didn't even know if I still knew how to ride a bike or if I would even enjoy it as much as I did when I was a kid. Better not to go all No. 22 straight away and then end selling it on Craigslist if I decide it's not for me. I can always build the frame up with better parts later on.

>frame too big

The frame is size "Xtra Small" for people from 4 12" - 5 4". I'm about 5'6" (on a good day) and size "Small" is for people from 5 3" - 5 8". Remembering riding my old brother's larger bike when I was younger, the bike felt unwieldly. So I went on Reddit to ask some experts and they told me to size down and get the smaller of the two. It feels like it's "just right".

It means you aren't riding a serious enough trail. I heavily doubt you're riding 4+ft drop offs and technical downhill on a bike with no suspension. At any decent speed anyway.
It's also the wrong tool for the job.
