If the mold is HOT and the metal is high fluidity some rotation/vibration is good enough. If it is a viscous metal you really want either excessive sprue pressure+lots of side-feed tubes and vents if you cant use vacuum.

Ever since I read the Gingery books, I've wanted to make a lathe from scratch. A small cast aluminum lathe bed with a screwed on piece of CRS seems like a shitty idea though, so I've been thinking about trying cast iron. You probably could, although pouring that much bronze has it's own issues. But I don't know if you could keep the ways flat and accurate, as bronze - while tough - wears faster than steel, which is why bronze is used for bushings. Never heard of or seen a metal lathe made out of anything but steel, with an iron base. But it's pretty dense, so it may have enough dampening properties for a lathe. The issue with aluminum is strength, and it's too light. You don't want the machine flexed and shuddering all over the place.

I haven't checked metal prices in a while, but bronze has always been pretty pricey, too - the cost factor of bronze is something to consider.

Don't know for sure if it would work -my gut feeling is it's too soft to keep the ways flat and accurate, but who knows? I kind of feel if it was appropriate, you'd see bronze milling machines and lathes, and you just don't. Like a Bridgeport - the base is just cast iron, but the important bits that you need for accuracy are steel.

Those books are for bored owners of existing machine shops and not a way to get machine tools. If you want to make a useful result begin by setting up an effective shop and don't waste effort and metal on anything BUT the shop and its equipment.

Tools get you toys but rarely the opposite. Begin with welding equipment (which helps build many other things like racking, benches, machinery dollies and much more). Acquire machine tools, tooling and learn how to obtain stock. Everything that bleeds time and money from your shop works against you.

I'm looking at using 330 (building a furnace with the potential to upgrade it to a gas turbine) and 303, 304, or 430 if that helps.

You can weld it if you want but the weld will rust quickly.

Any thickness is structural if you dimensionally strengthen it. I recommend 1/12" at least if you have a nice bending shear.

Use an abrasive cutting wheel unless your bladed cutter is carbide tipped.

Im trying to compress and hammer harden a bronze dagger.Ive seen some diy set ups to do a unified and consistent edge by using two brass door handles as guides with the blade run through it as its hammered.

Problem is all my door handles turned out to be fake brass or hallow.Ive got some round brass but im not sure what set up i could do quickly to keep them in place as guides.

Maybe not too bad, you could rib a "flat" pattern out to get your rigidity without needing too much additional volume. The few times I've pulled by Enco mill/drills bed off to clean the ways, I've been """"impressed"""" by how little iron is actually used to make it.

Same would probably apply for aluminum, too, though. you could always face an aluminum casting with a grey cast sheet that you can lap down.

How can I find tin in the wild? I came across a bundle of zinc wheel weights a few months ago and made some brass, now I want to try making bronze with tin.

1095 is slightly tricky because optimal ht requires a hold time at aus temp.

You might be able to get away with no hold, but it won't be optimal.

140 degree canola or fast quench oil.

After quench clean scale to shiny metal then use torch to gently heat until steel turns light blue. Dunk in water and repeat once or twice more.

Ive done it You can buy a cheap iron ingot mold.

Ive found the porperties of aluminum and copper behave differently to tin and copper bronze though.Its normally a straightforward alloy (tin bronze) but for some reason despite aluminum having a lower melting point to copper it doesnt seem to mix with it easly and remains pretty viscus at the bottom of the crucible while the copper is pretty much water above it.It took a great deal of mixing , borax and letting it sit before they made a useable alloy.

I have the opportunity to get a job pouring gold for a small mining & processing site.

I want to know if gold pouring/precious metals casting is an actual profession/line of work or am I imagining it? I'm told its skilled work so I want to know if this is a skill that would get me work in the future, especially if I get good at it. I imagine for firms producing bullion the process is mostly automatic but could this experience get me somewhere like that?

Searching for "gold pouring jobs" just returns a bunch of news pieces so I'm a bit lost.

Oil quench, anneal, oil quench.

Temper at like 400F for 5 minutes or so. Grind to final shape.

Hello its the bronze sword guy again.Im wondering if i can get some advice and info on brazing. Ive been experimenting with some miscasts to see if i can fill some superficial holes.I havent had much luck with a propane trouch and some flux nothing seems to stick.I have heard in the bronze age they would "wash" miscasts with holes with a coating of fresh bonze on top so i attemped that but didnt have much luck with the bronze droplets not actually sticking or fusing securly.

Whats the chemistry behind liquid metal fusing? i clean the surface, add flux and heat it up.Some chinese blades are made from multiple parts cast onto each other.How does that work if the metal doesnt fuse?

Too cold. The molten metal should be over-heated and the base metal should be pretty damn hot.

Your drops are chilling before they metallurgically fuse.

Another trick is to fill it with a more chemically active lower melting point metal like a lead or tin.

that depends on the kind of random stuff you have laying around.

you need oilsand. if you buy this is by far the biggest expense, but i guess mixing your own is a huge pain and requires a lot of sieves. the castbox is simply done with 2x4s
+ like 20$ for random stuff, brush, blower, parting powder etc.

the foundry can be rigged up out of dirt and random bricks/stones. a natural draft airflow and spalted wood should get you to aluminum temperature range easy.
i say sub 100$ without safety gear.

If you want to go up to copper/bronze, forced air and an insulated foundry is a must. For forced air, a mains leaf blower and triac speed controller is like 50$ on ebay. you'd also need coal for fuel and a refractory lid

So a friend of mine wants an African style machete like pic related. I am not sure what steels to use. I was thinking, maybe a "leafier" core and a harder edge.

Coat your ceramic wool in refractory cement, it won't tolerate forging temperatures on it's own and fibers can come loose and be blown out into the air (and thus your lungs) if it's not contained. Cut it with fabric shears, wear a dust mask and eyepro, package it up in a bag or something when you aren't actively going to be cutting it for something new, vacuum the work area you cut it on afterwards.

Get a single-layer pottery kiln (the ones where you get get like 20 sections to make a tall one) and stack cheap firebricks as needed on the top. Melt-out and drying doesn't need a lot of heat just a lot of time.

the melting point is too low for a charcoal furnace. Even when not melted, the metal remains too hard to shape, and becomes brittle when you try.
Seems like a cast-only alloy.

You can´t melt tungsten carbide. While the cobalt gets softer and will at one point liquify, the WC-carbide will dissociate into W2C. Nonetheless you won´t get a melt but a really hot mud instead, because the carbide will stay solid at reasonable temperatures (1600°C).

Recycling of tungsten carbide is done by dissolving the cobalt in liquid zinc and performing a vacuum destillation (metal vapor!). That removes the cobalt binder from the carbide and both can be processed individually again. You need gigantic and expensive equipment for that.

I don't need nitric acid but I know it can be made from piss.
But the summary gives good information:
Sulfuric acid was produced in early times by distilling iron II sulfate, or “green vitriol,” and later, by heating a mixture of saltpeter (NaNO3) and sulfur along with steam

So...uhm...They use that green vitrol to make fertilizer / thing that kills moss. Also gives off SO2 and SO3 but H2SO4 remains in the flask.
They say it is
2 FeSO4 --- > Fe2O3 + SO2 + SO3
H2O + SO3 --- > H2SO4

So the process of exposing Sulfur to Oxygen and bubbling it through water might not be that far off, just that yields may be low, which is why they use the catalyst to keep the reaction rate steady while keeping temperature low.

But I just realized muriatic acid (fuck English acid descriptions) should work really really well and is quite safe. It creates hydrogen and a zinc salt. Much safer than sulfuric acid and much easier to clean up. I will pick it up tomorrow.

You can get a little bit of platinum and do some slow-as-fuck solid platinum catalysis. Once you have the acids you can use it to make the proper platinum catalyst plates. Or buy shitty knock-offs on Amazon.

Thank you, but I have no need for it anymore. If I had gone with the HCl, I would have also gotten baking soda. Then I would have washed the parts, and washed them again in a basic solution, to make sure no HCl remains in order to avoid Phosgene.

Instead I found a safe alternative: Blued flue pipe. Years ago, I tried to make a forge from an old barrel, but I did not, for I had built a gas forge and it worked "well enough". Nowadays, the gas forge has died due to cracks in the refractory cement.
Pic relates. One cuts off the top part of the barrel, flips it around and puts it back on using a welding device (be sure to remove the paint, it stinks/burns when welding). Then you use the stick welder to cut a hole out in the middle - I had no plasma cutter and it was late, so I could not use the flex. Take the flue pipe and attach a square piece of sheet metal on it, the attach a "flange" of flat sheet metal.
Place the flue pipe with square attachment and stick it into the whole made in the barrel so about 2cm look out above, and somehow make a conical mold (not sure how I will yet). Make a steel disk with holes in it, and place it into the flue pipe at the top, make sure it is flush with the rest of the barrel.
Put wooden dowels into it, and cast your refractory cement. Let it cure (at least 24 hours above 0C, the warmer the better). Remove the mold after curing, and fire it slightly. When that is done, use a drill or gently punch out the dowels.


Soon I will have a barrel-forge, and with a new makeshift anvil (the last one was too soft), I will be able to stoke the flames again. The Oil-Blower I have tried on a smaller scale forge already and it can burn steel. It has a variable speed controller, as well as a flap to regulate airflow, and doesn't mind higher temperatures.

Since I have no power where the forge will be, I must power it some off-grid way. It seems that those mobile power units are very expensive, and I'd get away cheaper with a car battery, a solar panel and an inverter. For example, with a 70Ah car battery I should get:
70*40 = 840 Wh
840Wh / 75W = ~10 hours of blower
Considering the battery is a) full and b) not being charged with solar power. Using a 100W solar cell with an inverter it should take around 9h of sunshine to load up the battery. Losses of the inverter assumed. I ain't no electrician though.

I forgot to add, the guy in the video related takes an oil drum and also saws it in half. He then turns around the BOTTOM half, and cuts a piece outside the top. This is ingenious, for he now has holes already ready for ventilation + a hood. I did not do it this way and I am angry with myself, but...live and learn.
