Hi,What would be the best way to go about building a substantial backyard pyramid? This is something that I have wanted to do for a long time but have not gotten around to, but I want to plan it out since it's something that I really want.Pyramid requirements:• Pyramid should be encircled by steps to reach the top. • The pyramid's final height should reach about 50 ft / 15 m. • The pyramid shouldn't exceed an area of about 2500 sq. ft. • The pyramid should take advantage of whatever materials are cheapest according to volume and won't fall apart given the chosen retention system. (I was thinking of gabion walls and concrete footings with compacted dirt.)Please tell me how you would go about accomplishing this task. Thanks for your time,Steve
>>2074332I'd also like pathway around the pyramid to be at least 2 ft. wide if not 3 ft. The grade of the steps isn't really important to me but shouldn't exceed 45 degrees. Thanks,Steve
Why would you ever want to do this retarded shit?
>>2074336I like variations in topography, but where I live the land is mostly flat. I also like the idea of being able to hike to the top in the morning to get a nice view of the surrounding area. Thanks,Steve
>>2074333Cheapest material is called butobeton, sir. It's plain concrete with (very) large stones dropped in it. The structure you desire will not be cheap, though - 400 tonnes of concrete and 1200 tonnes of the large stones.
Dude... you're talking about building a 5 story dirt/rock mound in your backyard. That's 1,500 cubic yards of earth, nearly 2,000 tons. This is going to require a substantial amount of engineering to ensure something like that is stable. Asking for advice on how to do it here is not just stupid, it's negligent. You need to speak to a soil engineer to figure out how the slopes need to be shored up so that nobody gets buried under 500 tons of dirt in a landslide.
>>2074343This would be a multi-year project, so the cost would be spread out over a long period of time. I am also open to getting fill from alternative sources. Anything to take up volume that will stay together. Thanks,Steve
>>2074344If the slope is not too extreme (say, 45 degrees or less), then I don't see any risk of a "landslide". Thanks,Steve
>>2074348>>2074344Add to this that people have been building pyramids for literally tens of millennia. They didn't need soil engineers or millions of dollars. Of course they had slave labor, but I have a used dump truck and an endless amount of free time. There's no reason why 1500 cubic yards of dirt cannot be willed into the form of a pyramid by myself. I am willing to put in the hard work. I like to think outside the box in order to accomplish impossible tasks. Thanks for your concern,Steve
>>2074348International building code permits a maximum grade slope of 2:1, which is a little less than 27 degrees. Anything steeper than that is not allowed unless it has been designed by a geotechnical engineer to employ devices and methods to stop erosion and slope failure from occurring. The fact that you don't know this and think that a 45 degree soil slope is "not too extreme" despite it being nearly twice the code allowable maximum slope reinforces my advice that you should not be doing this yourself.
>>2074354>people have been building pyramids for literally tens of millenniaThey were also made out of solid blocks of stone, not rocks and fill dirt.
>>2074362>Anything steeper than that is not allowed unless it has been designed by a geotechnical engineer to employ devices and methods to stop erosion and slope failure from occurringWhile this might be a general guideline, I strongly doubt that it's encoded in U.S. law. And if it is, it's likely not enforceable except for in urban areas. >>2074365This is a valid criticism. Making sure the dirt doesn't wash out is going to be a substantial challenge. I will have to learn more about identifying soil mixtures which won't erode quickly. Thanks for the thoughts,Steve
Pyramid constructed from sand. Steve
>>2074369>I strongly doubt that it's encoded in U.S. lawIt has nothing to do with US law. It's in the international building code that nearly every permit department in the country is governed. It's a matter of you not being issued a building permit due to not adhering to required regulations, and being fined heavily if they find out you've done it without a permit. Unless you live in an unregulated backwater shithole where nobody cares, then by all means proceed in ignorance with constructing your 2 thousand ton deathtrap and just remember that you were warned.>>2074371>Pyramid constructed from sandThose are clearly blocks.

That gets you a liner and moisture barrier. Hang horse stall rubber matting on the inside (you can weld elevator bolt s to the wall as anchor studs) for sound dampening. It's only money.

>>2074365All the south/central American pyramids were build out of rocks and fill dirt, only the outer most layer was solid.
>>2074826>only the outer most layer was solidGee, really? Why do you think that is? The outermost layer is where the erosion problem occurs. Soil has no problem supporting weight, what soil is bad at is holding itself up against gravity.

Hi friends,I just want everyone to know that it was not my intention to have others plan this out entirely. I'm not sure why this has engendered such a harsh response from so many. It's not as if I am coming to the table with nothing at all. I have a basic idea and am looking to see how others would accomplish the same task.>>2074548It's not nearly big enough. I need to get a property in the country in order to see this to completion. Right now, I'm just on a city lot. While it sounds like fun trying to do this in the city, it's just not going to happen. >>2074748This is close to what I am thinking. I am just concerned that the gabion walls will collapse under pressure and slumping will occur.>>2074769Good post. Thanks.>>2074788This is beautiful. My fantasy is to have a goat tower at the top of my pyramid.>>2074802Does this have any drainage system installed? I need to read more about it.
Steve, I read somewhere that when building the earthen mounds in North America, natives used a layer of clay silt between layers of dirt. This thwarted the natural capillary action that would draw water to the top and erode the pyramid quicker. Try that.
Good luck, mister Steve. Whenever I settle down I want to spend the rest of my days building a fatass pile of dirt for god
Use this
>>2074973Hi friend,Thanks for the video. This is an interesting technique. I could imagine using it to build retention walls. It looks like these would be far more stable than gabion walls, but I'm not sure about cost competitiveness. I need to price out the required materials.>>2075266It looks like many of the American mounds suffer from issued related to water retention.I think I can handle keeping water out of the dirt. Installing drainage systems, making sure the soil mixture is right, and using non-porous materials when necessary should eliminate most issues related to water retention. >>2074348A pyramid with a height of 50 feet and an area not exceeding 2,500 square feet (or 50 feet square) won't have 45-degree or 1:1 slopes. It will have 1/2:1 slopes minimum, but steeper since you are trying to add a flat area within the slopes for stairs. This isn't something you're going to accomplish with loose, uncontained soil. That being said, there are plenty of ways to make it happen. We also need to know the make/model of your used dump truck since you'll need to transport somewhere between 150 and 750 full loads to your backyard.
>>2075197Not really, its basically a mound with steps. Lack of drainage is probably why it keeps collapsing every 3-4 years at 1 million eurobucks a pop.
>>2074332Steve, you need a body to inhabit your pyramid. Preferably a mummified one. Hit me up if you want some spicy DIY mummification recipes.Regards, Hank

>>2075620Umm, you do know what website this is right?
>>2074332You gotta look into geo-polymers bro. It's how the egyptians made their pyramids.
Unironic postThere are two ways to build this. Solid stone, or essentially as a corbelled dome with fill. Solid stone method is fairly self explanatory. Corbelled dome means you pretty much treat take it layer by layer. Build the retaining wall around the structure with solid stone or concrete. Fill the interior with dirt and rip rap mix, which needs to be packed down tight. Build your next layer such that the exterior stone or concrete rests 3/4 on the original concrete, 1/4 on the fill. Fill. Repeat until you can't anymore, such that the layers form a corbelled arch, so that if the fill shifts, the external structure doesnt. Do not use gabions if using erodable fill. Rain will wash the fill away and destroy the structure. You have to start on the bedrock.
>>2074332So you have an area of 15 meters by 15 meters and you want to build a "pyramid" that's 15 meters high.Basically just buy a metal mast structure and be done with it. Assuming this is about 800 cubic meters of volume the absolute minimum cost will be about $8000 just for cheap stone or gravel. If you had access to "free" soil or stone or gravel it would be different. I can be done but it's fucking retarded and I can't help but think you're either a child or a mentally ill man trying to build a fucking backyard pyramid. Also, what about the ground you're building on? You'll also need a foundation.
>>2076183How hard would it be to cut solid stone blocks out of the bedrock and use them to build the pyramid? You'd need one of those stone cutting chainsaws and a water supply. I think flooding may be an issue.

>>2074332So I take it you want a footprint of 50x50ft for your 2500sqft? You want this 50ft tall, as well? You want a pathway of approximately 3ft spiraling to the top, and probably a flat top to hang out on top of your pyramid, correct? Each rotation on the pyramid is going to eat 6ft of its associated dimension, so if you have, say, 7 levels, you will be left with an 8x8 square on the top of your pyramid to look down on others from. So with this in mind, you'll have 224ft (50+44+38+32+26+20+14 are your levels) of pathway to climb 50ft. AKA, you'll need to climb 1ft for every 4.5ft of walking. This assumes your incline is consistent throughout the entire structure, even on corners.
