Hi,What would be the best way to go about building a substantial backyard pyramid? This is something that I have wanted to do for a long time but have not gotten around to, but I want to plan it out since it's something that I really want.Pyramid requirements:• Pyramid should be encircled by steps to reach the top. • The pyramid's final height should reach about 50 ft / 15 m. • The pyramid shouldn't exceed an area of about 2500 sq. ft. • The pyramid should take advantage of whatever materials are cheapest according to volume and won't fall apart given the chosen retention system. Dude... you're talking about building a 5 story dirt/rock mound in your backyard. That's 1,500 cubic yards of earth, nearly 2,000 tons. This is going to require a substantial amount of engineering to ensure something like that is stable. Asking for advice on how to do it here is not just stupid, it's negligent. You need to speak to a soil engineer to figure out how the slopes need to be shored up so that nobody gets buried under 500 tons of dirt in a landslide.

Steve, I read somewhere that when building the earthen mounds in North America, natives used a layer of clay silt between layers of dirt. This thwarted the natural capillary action that would draw water to the top and erode the pyramid quicker. Try that.

Unironic postThere are two ways to build this. Solid stone, or essentially as a corbelled dome with fill. Solid stone method is fairly self explanatory. Corbelled dome means you pretty much treat take it layer by layer. Build the retaining wall around the structure with solid stone or concrete. Fill the interior with dirt and rip rap mix, which needs to be packed down tight. Build your next layer such that the exterior stone or concrete rests 3/4 on the original concrete, 1/4 on the fill. Fill. Repeat until you can't anymore, such that the layers form a corbelled arch, so that if the fill shifts, the external structure doesnt. Do not use gabions if using erodable fill. Rain will wash the fill away and destroy the structure. You have to start on the bedrock.
