Has there been a mainstream comic run as good as the Bat epic in last 30 years?

Morrison's Action comics excluded.

The Knightfall Arc ran in the early 90's
>>

This was shit. Something that's epic and grand without having tons of loopholes and is decently written.

I wouldn't even say its the best Morrison run of the last 30 years.

2001 New X-Men Grant Morrison
2001 X-Statix Peter Milligan
2004 The Punisher (MAX) Garth Ennis

Genuinely no. And least of all anything written by grant himself.

That shits awful, the novelization is better.

Stop. He hasn’t writtten anything in his career as well paced, plotted, thought out and executed as his run on Batman/B&R.
>>
>>137394456
Also ennis punisher is better before MAX and only good after Born when he’s paired with Parlov because, like millar, parlov gives a nice aesthetic for the misery and cynicism to bounce off of.

Geoff Johns Green Lantern. It's not always the best but it has so much great stuff overall. Johns did more for GL than what Morrison did for Batman.

This
DnA's Cosmic Marvel

New X-Men/Academy X and X-Force? What was so special about it?
Academy X was good and X-Force was OK, but they weren't even the best X-books of the era. See PAD's X-Factor, Remender's X-Force, or Gillen's Uncanny.

PAD's X-Factor was great, but I'm not sure I'd consider it peak x-book because it really does its own thing.
>New X-Men/Academy X and X-Force? What was so special about it?
It actually built (respectfully, I thought) on previous Claremont continuity, tied some loose ends. New X-Men towards the end actually had a good take on a new X-Men junior team earning their name - I didn't care for Academy X and all the random slaughter early on.
I actually meant more towards the Messiah Trilogy and Necrosha era (it felt like they were kinda leading the direction of the comics at that point, for me), though even Curse of the Mutants still had some good material. I'll admit I don't recall exactly who was writing the main X-Men books, but a lot of the Utopia era in them rubbed me the wrong way.
>>
>>137394129
Goes to shit in Batman Inc.
The beginning part of the run is underrated though.
>>
For batman? Only O'Neil editor's run is at the same level but has worse low because 90s.
For other heroes?Don't think they are better or worse but
>JLA and All Star Superman
>Moessner/Waid/Geoff Flash
>Geoff/Tomasi's Green Lantern run
>Triangle Era(it had also worse low) ,plus Louise Steel and PAD supergirl
>10s Aquaman(multiple kino runs with serviceable runs)
>Peter David Hulk
>Geoff Johns Superboy prime epic(the finale was the only good thing about Batkek)
>Lemire Animal Man
>Busiek and Geoff Superman
>Daredevil post Miller saga (Nocenti to JMD to Kessel to Kelly was a ride to leave Miller shadow that made you cry when Quesada happened)
>HAckman Fantastic Four
>DnA Guardians and Nova
>Greg Pak Herc and Hulk
>Jurggens Thor
>Busiek Ironman n Avengers
>Louise simonson and Peter David X factor
>Authority
President Luthor era(Loeb+ Kelly) could have been better than batmorrison but they fucked up at the end of both runs.

Utopia era X-Men was Matt Fraction. I think you're overestimating Kyle and Yost's influence on that era of comics. They did Necrosha and Messiah War, but both of those crossovers were just extensions of their X-Force run, and none of it had the character-defining work you saw from PAD or Remender.

>>137399410
>I think you're overestimating Kyle and Yost's influence on that era of comics.
I dunno, their X-Force run was the one that used a bunch of classic Claremont villains and referenced classic stuff. I get the impression those two are huge fans of the Claremont run, but one is an edgelord who loved killing off characters. You can see in the crossovers that spanned several titles like Messiah Complex, Second Coming and Necrosha. Meanwhile, the other titles' writers were giving us stuff I largely didn't care for like Generation Hope, a lot about Utopia, the science club etc.

>>137396876
actually no, you fags just misinterpreted what he said, which is unironically quite bigoted
>>
>>137394354
You mean The General? Robin took care of him in his own series
>>
>>137396973
That would be the second part/series of Batman Inc, during New 52 shit. It seemed editorial didn't want all the deep continuity references of the first half, gutting Grant's existing story and leaving behind a bare bones, uninteresting and padded basic action tale
>>
>>137400131
Probably more 'comic companies are beholden to debtors and the biggest debtors want only fags and dickchoppers getting promotion'
>>
>>137402765
Yeah i'll concede that the first part of Inc was better. HOWEVER, the foreign Batmen shit was my least favorite part of his whole Bat Epic so increasing the focus on them bored me. I don't care about le scottish batman, and his sidekick girl was only slightly less boring/annoying.
>>
>>137394167
it's far longer than it should be.
>>
>>137398394
honestly, the big problem I have with No Man's land is that Batman is absent for a good deal of it. I know there are rabid fans of the supporting cast and I respect that, but I'm Batman for Batman and, maybe, Grayson.
>>
>>137396973
I have all three omnis and I stalled out as soon as I reached Inc.
>>
Comics suck because they literally don't let new people in, at least, not on merit.
>>
>>137399245
NTA, but I don't even know why I finished it. It made me feel gross, like I'd jerked off six times in the same day.
>>
>>137394129
Yes, many. Morrison's run was pretentious overblown self-sabotaging shit.
>>
>>137398394
I thought it was pretty good, a fun event that used many characters well. And it did make some meaningful changes on Batman too - Cassandra being the most obvious.
>>
>>137394129
Tom King's Batman buries it
>>
>>137403282
I hope you at least read the native American batman and Robin chapter, that was the best issue in Inc IMO.
>>
>>137403374
>pretentious
The peak of the run (B&R) was incredibly lean and straightforward though.
>>
>>137403291
DC regularly puts out specials and anthology comics that are made up of a lot of new talent. A lot of them suck but some have promise. Marvel has been promoting new writers and artists for a couple years now. One of the better Spider-Man artists started off doing Spider-Man fanart on Deviantart. DC's Chinese push has been bringing in Chinese writers and artists.
>>
>>137403263
That's fair.

>>137403579
I have yet to read the whole thing, I've read the first volume and felt alright.
>>
>>137404018
No I was trolling don't read it. Or at least don't pay for it. King's run was trash, save the time. There are like 20 other Batman runs that would be better.
>>
>>137394129
The run itself was fine. But literally nothing good has come out of the legacy its left on Batman.
>>
>>137397324
>Like JMS's run
So, awful.
>>
>>137403374
Name 20.
>>
>>137394129
Greg Rucka's Batman was pretty good but Ed Brubaker might be Satan to the character so everything Rucka did is kind of tainted.
War Games was a war crime. His Catwoman was carried by the artists
>>
>>137394129
This is the only Batman I ever read and I tried reading more afterward but it just didn't interest me.
>>
>>137401049
I mean, I though the real crazy fun was volume 2, but you do you, man
>>
>>137396910
I think the criteria is ongoing Big Two comic run. Long Halloween is limited.

Just another example of why ongoing comics are crappy. The most iconic and best-selling Batman stories are limited series.

>>137401621
LotDK is an anthology, not an epic run in an ongoing under a dedicated mastermind. But it's easily the best non-limited Batman book in main continuity of the last 30 years. Batman Adventures, Gotham Adventures, and Superman Adventures are probably the most solid, overall quality ongoings at DC in the last 30 years.

>>137398227
Yep.

>>137400498
Morrison is getting to that age when comic writers don't really have that ambition anymore, right? He looks good for his age, but 63 is well past the prime for most Big Two writers.

The MCU is so financially successful it's a phenomenon, yet it didn't really invigorate the superhero genre. If the MCU had a robust DCCU to compete against, then maybe more energy and talent would've been generated. But many fear that superhero fatigue is setting in, and that opportunity is gone. (Or maybe somehow the normies jumping ship will right the wrongs, who knows?)

I think Morrison bowed out due to the shitshow of New 52, and the overall lack of passion and innovation in the Big Two for the last decade+. If the tide turns, maybe he'd jump in again. It feels like we're in an age of ennui and stagnation waiting for some big thing to come fix everything up, like King Arthur restoring the kingdom or some shit.
>>
It's the blueprint for everything bad about modern Batman stories.
>>
>>137394129

Knightfall and hush get lots of mentions by batfags but both are trash.
>>

>>
>>137403291
>not on merit
That’s the key. They hire lots of new people, mostly people who have never bought a floppy, hate the entire release format, write for trades and barely ever read any of those.
>>
>>137408237
This but not by fault of the original story. The original story was amazing, but then writers keep putting out mediocre riffs on the original like a bad photocopy, getting worse and worse each time.

Miller does DKR and we're still getting grimdark batshit 30+ years later.
We'll get the Snyders and Zdarskys and Williamsons of the industry doing Morrison ripoffs for at least another 15 years.
