Good morning again Emmy fans and nandroid enthusiasts! We have the next comic in the series, a bit of a jump from meeting Garrison to meeting another character.
>>130618253A *human* character, a small surprise but something unexpected none the less.
>>130618253>>130618259Well, we know what Darcy's offering is going to be.
>>130618259Which raises some questions about our Aunt here, and why she chooses this little arrangement with all of these here outmodes- is it a soft spot for the mechanically inclined? Maybe some passing guilt for not helping robots past? And why the secrecy, what risks are there? Also here's a full-res link for that anon who asked for it (some months ago)- I'll work on getting links like this for the rest of the comic to the best of my ability as well: https://files.catbox.moe/n5db0j.png
>>130618292Last thread was a step in the right direction, so, as always, kindly remember to ignore, report and do not feed any blatant trolling, shitposting or spam.
Glad we got the names of two of the bots! Looks like that orange hat-wearing one is the only unnamed one left
>>130618253Damn, Aunt Ginny lives like this?I wouldn't have imagine a normal-seeming human like her living there. The property looks abandoned, there are cobwebs inside everywhere.>>130618292What's the point of this? All the main comics are available on Webtoon for everyone. And if someone wants the high-res versions, they are free to join Dom's Patreon. It's literally just one buck a month.
>>130618286From a practical standpoint, bringing in another junk-picker is way better than a standard pile of junk, so long as the energy cost to keep Emmy charged isn't astronomical then she's an investment for the 'family' now. Beats the shit out of a toaster or an apple core, get fucked outmodes Darcy is junk queen.
>>130618259An old lady that smokes, a woman after my own heart
>>130618302Is ArchitectOP gone again?>>130618516Based and waiting for her to kill herself faster and inherit her stuff-piled
Avery is for ________
>>130618538Bulge
>>130618533>inheriting gigantic piles of trash and a health hazard mansionI think I’d rather hold her bony hand
>>130618533No, not at all, just using that instead since it's less likely to be deleted.>>130618333>What's the point of this?Archiving more than anything, in case things ever go belly-up.
>>130618253Too much of a jump, Garrison barely got a proper intro, it looked like he was going to be looming/threatening and then he just came into the scene without much in the way of interesting paneling. Now the old lady’s introduction has zero impact because she’s immediately brought in without any sort of mystery/impact. Doesn’t Dom know you should put your audience in suspense a little while to give reveals more impact/meaning? Now that he’s in the narrative portion of his story it’s like he’s not giving anything any time to breathe.
Got some junk to aunt Ginny Will she like it?
>>130618253Anyone else getting serious Cloris Leachma vibes?
>>130618616>anon posts his junk
>>130618612>Doesn’t Dom know you should put your audience in suspense a little while to give reveals more impact/meaning?No, he doesn't
>>130618253>>130618259>>130618286Oh. I didn't think the Aunt is actually a human. I wonder what she would think of Emmy as a find?
>>130618878Pretty cute, probably
>>130618878I wonder, will she be viewed as a valuable piece of machinery that would be lucrative to sell, or will she be viewed as another helper to increase the daily scrap-gathering total of the household? I wonder which is more useful to this family now.
>>130618967Given the state of the house, they could really use a maid in the "family".
Guys literally only want one thing and it's fucking disgusting
>>130618259>>130618292>>130618292They are fukken thieves?
>>130619110More like scavengers probably
>>130618253>mecha gorilla butlerperfect>>130618292What a nice landlord
Twinks GTFO and let the REAL Botlers in
>>130618878>>130618967>>130619049It's pretty obvious where this is going. Emmy is a child-care robot, and Darcy is a child in serious need of care (whether she thinks she is or not). Pretty sure Aunt Ginny is going to assign Emmy to be Darcy's caretaker, if for nothing else than to keep her safe during her junk-hunting expeditions.
>>130619150Based, gonna need a Garrison version of picrel
>>130619189Picrel?
>>130619110>>130618292Can you imagine the size of the ant he had to push over to get the rat skeleton? Or that dandelion? Seriously risky business.
>>130619213Im guessing picture related, though I dont understand bronary.
>>130619213Short for "pic related", basically stands for the pic attached to a post.
>>130618612Shit is happening fast because ALL OF THIS STUFF. Is happening fast for Emmy too. She's getting thrown in with a group of Outmodes, a strange child, a old lady, a junkyard, all of this stuff is happening fast, and with her being out main central character, writing wise, it makes sense. Also, What if a character doesn't need that kind of entrance? Is the idea of someone just showing up just not good? Like that shit with people just doesn't happen, not even in real life but also just in other stories? Not every character needs to be hinted at in whatever way your imagining in your head. Maybe the paneling/pose with their first intro could be better, but, still. This Aunt got hinted at back in MARCH according to Webtoons in one of comics when Darcy references them. It's now MAY, and they've been referenced MULTIPLE TIMES by the other characters in these two months, Dennis, Darcy, Garrison. What good would it do for the character if she/he DOESNT need to be poked and hinted, and foreshadowed, and get a whole ass page spread for their introduction? You would call it a waste of time, for a character that doesn't need it, because your making judgements on a character whose purpose we don't know and their role in the story is ALSO still unknown to us. The story would be moving at a snails pace if we decided to dedicate even MORE TIME for every single new Robots introduction and with a comic that comes out this fast, that would be unbearableThe story is FINALLY moving across at a steady pace. Maybe some things are moving a bit too quickly but if you ask me your way too used to nothing happening and the crawl that was the birthday party
>>130619150based
>>130619267>actually appreciating the comic and seeing what the creator is going for>not blindly hating and criticizing every decision made from the startYou must be new here
>>130618292Wondering if we're going to see the other foot fall with her - is Garrison needlessly uptight and the aunt is too chill to care about the vase, or is she going to rip Emmy a new one and throw her into debt slavery when she finds out?
>>130619267>This Aunt got hinted at back in MARCH according to Webtoons in one of comics when Darcy references them. It's now MAY, and they've been referenced MULTIPLE TIMES by the other characters in these two months, Dennis, Darcy, Garrison.I agree with your other points but I have to vehemently disagree with you here;Real-world publishing time should not be a metrics for how a comic is paced, because when you read it when it's already finished the pacing will be completely different.Pages happens one after the other, not however long it take for them to be done and posted. Otherwise on a re-read the entire comic will be extremely rushed and unsatisfying to read Did the characters wait a whole week after Emmy arrived until the aunt showed up?No, she come down when the clock hit five.
>>130619352Maybe she'll want to keep Emmy so she uses the vase as an excuse.
>>130619150Why don't you use anti-aliasing?
>>130619546Perfer to not waste time perfecting lineartGets more art done plus less stress
>>130619358I can agree with you a little bitSome things are going too fast and aren't going to be good on re-readBut that comes with the whole thing of weekly updates, and how fast a story moves in real life vs. when the pages are already out, and how to keep audience attention with a story that moves too fast or slow. But in it's current state, I still maintain that the comic is moving at a alright pace, and saying that these introductions are rushed is too soon to tell when we don't know how large a role they will have in the whole story, so a big reveal or slow burn to it, would just be unnecessary.
>>130619586It would not take additional time, you just place the same lines like you normally would except they would look smoother.
>>130619157I wonder what the relationship there is, Darcy and the aunt. Biological relation? Informal adoption? Are they close, or antagonistic? Does the aunt truly care for Darcy, or is she interchangeable with any old outmode who can bring her scrap?
>>130619623It would for me. seethe
>>130619623That is a damn pretty piece of art.
>>130619653>It would for meElaborate.
>>130619670major autismo about making shit juuust right.
>>130618253I NEED MOAR ULA
>>130619741Understandable, have a nice day>>130619795Don't we all?
>>130619631Her behavior so far looks like she might just be a doddering old lady who likes her trinkets and came up with this as a way to offer shelter to homeless robots and maybe humans, in Darcy's case, and get all the tchotchke she could ever want out of the deal. None of the robots in the previous panels seemed concerned about the vase breaking so she's *probably* not going to fly off the handle. But it remains to be seen what she'll think of it and just what Darcy's friendship bracelet does, if anything. Maybe she'll smell opportunity instead and guilt-trip Emmy into joining her merry band of scrappers.
>>130618253Is it just me or is her introduction a little off? Like what's with the second panel of her just standing in a near indentical room saying "it can wait". Then she just appears with the group. Makes me feel like i've missed a few panels.
>>130618253Just from her design and set up does anyone think she's gonna be something of an antagonist? Like kinda manipulating the robots for her own gain and only Emmy notices something's off only to make an enemy of her?
>>130619631We know that "Aunt Ginny" is Darcy's great-aunt. It's hinted that Darcy's parents are dead and Ginny adopted her. Beyond that, we'll just have to wait to see how they interact.
>>130619631I don't think Darcy and Mrs Hackle are biologically related, as Darcy admitted she is not really her aunt a few chapters ago. But since she calls her "Aunt Ginny" I assume they are close.I'm honestly surprised how nice Mrs Hackle, I was definitely expecting anything but that. Maybe she has a darker side we haven't seen yet.
>>130618333reminds me of the Monarch's house.
>>130619863looking back at it now it does feel a little off. the scene would benefit with a little more panels introducing the aunt. it would mean more effort is needed to finish it though.
>>130619887>We know that "Aunt Ginny" is Darcy's great-auntOr do we?
I’m just hoping it doesn’t end in a lesbian ship. It seems like that’s all western comics and webcomics can do now.

>>130619911I think dom just fumbled the transition, but otherwise just having the clock ring and Garrison fetching her is not that bad a transition

>>130620155She's deteriorating, you need to print a new one and laminate her.
>>130620155>taking her to a restaurantholy based anon.
>>130620202you people say the same every time i post a picture that's closer up, has better lighting, or with a different camera, i take care of her, she looks the same as she's ever been (which is not optimal given my poor skills), i thought of laminating her but i'm not sure i could get it done properly with her size, any recommendations?
>>130618253Foster's home for Robotic friends.
>>130620155>Anon-kun, aren't you Lonleyhttps://youtu.be/EETYBwHpTuM
>>130619863Dom was being a little lazy in the second panel and didn't draw all the junk the robots put on it in the first panel. It's in the background and the focus is on Garrison and Ginny in the foreground, so it's a forgivable oversight.
>>130620364Who is this nandroid?
>>130620364based nanny. when someone makes you drop your box you beat them to death.
>>130620378i dunno
>>130620260That's the problem, I don't think there is any point in laminating the existing one, she already looks weathered and wrinkled. Maybe you should print out a new one, and get a better knife for cutting cardboard while you're at it. Then you can probably get it laminated at the same palce you get it printed, or maybe some other company can do it, IDK. Or perhaps you can even find a place that would print directly onto cardboard so that you don't have to glue it and thus avoid wrinkles.
>>130620418Well you must have had some kind of idea of her when drawing her. What's her job?
Good Lord, Ginny's in on the scavenging and thievery. That's so sweet. She's like the orphanage owner in Annie, but kind.(goes to cue up Rag and Bone by White Stripes)

>>130618253>>130618259>>130618292Since Garrison is named that way I assume he is a guard bot in a military compound or somewhere that is important. The questions I have are how did he become an outmode, how did he end up in Aunt Ginny's home for homeless robots, and how did he learn the polite and butler-like personality?
>>130621571The passing introduction of this robot and its consequences have been a disaster for Emmy threads

>>130621590He's not identical for sure, but Garrison has a stylistically similar body to the Iron Giant. For all we know one day he accidentally read a book and decided the military life wasn't for him. But then again, why design a hulking guard robot or walking tank with a receding hairline? I'm more inclined to think he was designed to be a butler from the start, for hyper-posh old-money railroad tycoon customers.>Garrison gave Dennis the medal on his coat, because it didn't mean anything to him anymore

Added some stabilizers to the forearms and working on said ball-joints for the elbows and later shoulders. Promise you´ll see much more finished next week.>>130620567absolutely Emmy-Pilled, Argentina-bro
>>130621821Garrison strikes me more as a bodyguard than a butler. I could see him standing next to some mob-boss as a reminder of what could happen to any of his guests who don't show proper respect. The "receding hairline" is just a nice stylistic touch.
>>130621947>constantly spouting life updates>only artist to create an entire tumblr and curiouscat for his character>repeatedly offers "lulore" as if people care>genuinely cares too much about how people view his story so he mauls its coherency to match constructive criticism

>>130622600Given his small size probably some form of small, easily maneuverable maintenance robot for tight spots, but I doubt it with his lack of aptitude for scavenging. To be frank a lot of the robots feel like they were made with a specific design in mind to convey character, rather than purpose, like a robot should in this universe. Maybe he was a line of robot companions specifically, like a little brother or a grandson robot for only children and aging retirees, who knows.
>>130622658>To be frank a lot of the robots feel like they were made with a specific design in mind to convey character, rather than purpose, like a robot should in this universeThat's very true, now that you mention it. Characters are important but I really wish Dom put more thought into worldbuilding sometimes.
>>130622703And it's not like the two are mutually exclusive either- you can design a very functionally clear robot that still has a strong and interesting character, so I think Dom didn't really stop to think about the application of a very small Pip-bot, or the job the stout orange fellow would take in the real world, but just making them look "rag-tag" and so on.

>>130622848>It's not about the story per se, it's about their design: it doesn't convey what they are. That's fair, Pip's design is very childlike and his personality is childlike too, but besides that there's no clear indication of what he was built to do. Same for the big orange guy, though he still gives off heavy lifting or businessman vibes to me. But at the same time, how specialized does a robot need to be? Socket is clearly designed for one specific purpose, but the big orange bot could just be a utilitarian "do whatever" bot for construction sites.

And at the moment, I think they are fine. Not completely perfect, not without problems, but they have been much shittier last autumn, or at least how I remember them. Heck, they've been shittier a couple months ago when the spammer was more active. But *now* is suddenly the time to avoid them? And also, yes, the comic discussion is, and always will be, the main thing here. Nobody is arguing with that and nobody is trying to take that away, and we are getting plenty of it each thread and it's great. However, if I wanted to discuss just the comic alone, I could simply go on Webtoon or Patreon. The comic is what I came here for, but the OC is why I stayed. >mfw https://youtu.be/Ge8mFKIkgkkDo you think the robots in this story struggle with existential dread. A lot of them seem very carefree even in these horrible circumstances. Does Emmy stare at the mirror at night? Will she get up at 3am to walk to beach to stare into the night that hangs over the ocean? Do robots watch the sunrise?
>>130640903>ELO appreciatorYou have good taste, anon. And I guess it depends on the robot, and when and how and why and where they were made, and so on. I doubt the earliest robots ever understood in anyway the weight of their existence, and they blissfully existed from their inception to their shutdown blissfully unaware of the world and themselves. I think the robots that we have now, in the comic I mean, are like more lighthearted androids in the Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep sense- created without memories or any human grounding they're capable of emotion, and doubt, and the whole spectra of human feeling and reflection, but with none of the emotional context needed to modulate it. There's no grounding for their existence being in danger so there's no dread to come of it, at least for robots like Emmy who've been guided intellectually into thinking the world is a perfect, happy place so long as they follow the rules. Older robots, like we've met the past few comics, I'm not so sure. They seem a lot less preoccupied with their own existence than with how they got to be outmoded instead- call it existential cynicism instead, maybe, replacing the looks in the mirror with snide remarks about other robots who've yet to befall their fate.>Will she get up at 3am to walk to beach to stare into the night that hangs over the ocean?I remember a story a little bit like this, from a long time ago.

>>130640903>struggle with existential dreadI'd wager that's a particular fast-track to going outmode, so they might have tried to clamp down on their ability to navel-gaze over the decades as the tech is refined; there even seems to be a particular undercurrent notion that the Nandroid series might have particularly potent blinders on in this regard, considering recent commentary by the outmodes on the allegedly meager depths of Emmy's intellect despite being much newer and high-class hardware.
>>130641320You say that like there's a large gap in intellect from each generation when it seems like quite the constant. It seems like a barrier that was over come that push something from a basic droid to a thinking machine: As regardless of age or model robots have varying levels of wisdom, intellect but still interact on even grounds like humans would; among even the same generation of the same machine intellect and thinking patterns vary more than the generational gaps do. >are like more lighthearted androids in the Do Androids Dream of Electric SheepI don't think so, the main thing that differentiaed the androids were their lack of empathy—that human component. Also they were created with memories, so that wasn't the issue. It was something about them, be it hardware or their particular nature of existance. Emmy and the other robots show some kind of empathy and belief in right and wrong outside of what's taught>There's no grounding for their existence being in danger so there's no dread to come of itI mean being outmoded, or destroyed, and just regular mortality is still an issue engrained into them. Surely there are robots, outmode or not, that feel a great weight regarding a manufactured existance and surely those that are made obsolete would start to have some very heavy doubts about their own purpose and being. Maybe they question their freewill, the freewill of others ect>I remember a story a little bit like thisDon't know what you mean, that was just a snippet from my lifeSo far it seems most of the machines lack that depth of thinking, where they're more concerned with the real than the ideas that constitute their beings. Do you think robots comit suicide? I suppose keeping them away from such notion would be good from a manufactures perspective: You don't need your ticket bot to rewrite critique of pure reason for the risk of him throwing himself into the ocean over petty ruminations about their existance
>>130642531yeah I said something similar >>130642656That depth of thought isn't needed but you have to wonder if makers can control such an aspect of them. Their brains seem to be a little beyond that tinkering; maybe they have to do something close to selective breeding in the amount of control they have. As in "hmm this batch seems to kill itself less and doesn't ask as many question, let's try and do what we did with them but more so". It could also be that the robot brains just aren't capable of that kind of thinking, and the more rational robots are a result of age and experience. >considering recent commentary by the outmodes on the allegedly meager depths of Emmy's intellect despite being much newer and high-class hardware. You're mixing things up a bit. Garrison, which is a great piece of info lore wise to have a robot comment on another robot's "type", is the only one who comments on nandroids being "empty headed" and that sterling products is believed to be "superior". So with this and how little people talk about mental hardware it seems intellect does not seem part of the stuff that comes with newer higher class models and machine intelligence is a semi constant. Garrison, despite being the oldest, seems to be the most intelligent or at least knowledgeable. If Nandroids are known to be empty headed it could have more to do training or that cerebral hardware, if it exists at different qualities, is preserved for only very specific machines whereas domestic bots are given the normal machinery. The former seems more likely from how there's little comment on intellectual superiority regarding superior models rather that Emmy's naivete is a result of her grooming for servitude. Also I made that edit lol
>>130627975same
>>130642656>You say that like there's a large gap in intellect from each generation when it seems like quite the constantI agree, I was talking about the *earliest* robots, like our Great War automaton we saw, not aware robots like Electronica later on who, I imagine, set the standard for intelligence and complexity in later robots. Odds are Electronica was just the same in terms of intelligence and awareness as any "modern" robots are, but the difference instead is in the progressive miniaturization of what goes into generating that. That's all I meant by it.>the main thing that differentiaed the androids were their lack of empathyNo, the lack of empathy was precisely *because* they, as in the Nexus-6 androids, were created without memories. That's why the Nexus-7s are so indistinguishable from humans, they're created with a lifetime of memories from their incept date upon which to create normalized, socialize human responses. The robots in this universe don't have that as far as we know, and instead of a void of empathy expressed as a sociopathic disregard for life like in DADoES, the robots in Emmy's universe seem to have picked up a lot more cynicism for their condition. I'd also hardly call her reception in the past comics empathetic on the part of the other robots, more so highly suspicious.>I mean being outmoded, or destroyed, and just regular mortality is still an issue engrained into themI'm not disagreeing with this, I was saying more how they express this doesn't seem to constitute dread so much as indifference or even whimsy, like the assortment of outmodes don't sympathize with the recently tossed Emmy, rather they make fun of the irony of her being a Sterling in the middle of a host of outmodes as well as making fun of Emmy's denial of her situation.>Don't know what you mean, that was just a snippet from my lifeThere was an Emmy beach story a while ago to the tune of sunsets and whatnot, just a memory.
>>130643211I'll feel really poorly for the lower-end menials if the secret to robot intelligence is a relatively static piece of blackbox tech, and thereby every bot has the same theoretical mental output but may find themselves thrust into "you pass butter" levels of rote labor activity and worse, conditioned to merely grudgingly tolerate it if there's no way to teach them to enjoy it.

>>130631208Probably not.The two sides had different 'metrics' for who was winning. The US touted body-counts; 6 or 10 or whatever of them died for each soldier we lost. The Vietcong measured material costs. A fighter plane or a tank cost a lot more than two dozen cheap, expendable, low-tech guerillas. Both sides imagined the other was 'bleeding to death'.Robots require high technology, maintenance, and electricity. All of which were scare in the North. They can be spotted by metal detectors and IR.The US would certainly have employed robots and the American public wouldn't have been so concerned about how many 'casualties' they suffered.

>>130650325>anyway, what does aunt ginny do to have a constant supply of cash? or does she get it from the scraps the bots give? It's really weird. She looks like she has enough wealth to not have to rely on robots bringing her scraps, but the state of the house says otherwise. Not to mention that if she actually has enough wealth, it begs the question of why is she associating with outmode scavengers in the first place.>>130650623There was a little bit of it early on, but then either the moderation decided to step in for a change, or (more likely) he got banned for posting illegal content elsewhere again.

>>130637020>>130637078>>130641339Thanks, this was meant to be just a one-off, not the start of something bigger. However, on second thought...>When you first heard about the stress-testing department, you could not believe it>How could the famed John Sterling allow something so horrible to exist in his company?>You'd come to rationalize it as a myth, a twisted rumor spread by some of the meaner Nandroids to instill fear in their weaker classmates>All doubts were cleared on your graduation day, however, when the lady handing out family assignments took you to the side and handed you a special folder>You were not going to a loving family, you were going to what you now knew to be 100% real android hell on Earth>And the fact that you were being sent there to work rather than to be tested yourself somehow made it feel worse>What followed were several weeks of training that made you unlearn a lot of the things you've learned about the company, the world, and the robots' place in it>At the end of your first day, you were asked to saw an older model janitor robot in half>Even though you knew it didn't have consciousness like you did, the beeping noises it was making during its final moments haunted you that night(1/2)
>>130651263(2/2)>You did not emerge from your docking chair feeling well rested the next morning>And when your human instructors asked you how you were feeling, you admitted as much>"The first day is always the toughest," one of them said. "You will get used to it, eventually, but it is not going to be easy.">"Luckily for you, however, you are a robot," the other added, "so we have something that might help you with adjusting.">The two then presented you with a special software update>They jokingly called it the "careless update", because it just made you... care less about certain things>From that point on, you training went much easier>You learned everything there was to learn about about the various Sterling products' internal mechanisms and the various tools used to stress-test them>On the final day of your training, you were forced to destroy a fellow Nandroid>Some part of you was sickened by how easily you did it and how accustomed you've become to the horrors of it all>But you did not dwell on it>After all, you were a good robot, and good robots did not question their ordersI don't intend to turn it into a long ongoing work, but I can probably get a few more shorts out of this idea.
