Way too many of you little zoomers (and even some of you boomers) don't know jack about Venom. You don't know who he is, the joining of journalist Eddie Brock and a symbiotic alien from outer space. You don't know his history, that he was only actually a villain for less than fifteen issues and that he always was interested in protecting the innocent. You don't know what his best comics were, we'll get to that. And you don't know that Venom was the most popular comic book character of the entire 1990s, that without Venom, Marvel comics would have died.So it's time you all learned something. This here is a Venom storytime, starting from the very start, Secret Wars #8, where Spider-Man first meets half of the being known as Venom, the symbiote.
>>126355110We're not going to do all of Secret Wars, because it really doesn't matter. Basically, some dumb Avengers shit happened and Spidey got sucked up to outer space where he fought with super heroes and villains and then ripped his suit. But being on an alien planet or asteroid or whatever, he couldn't find a sewing kit to fix it, so he does the sensible thing we see here.
>>126355122Next thing you know, Spidey's got a brand new suit.
>>126355135After that, a lot more dumb Avengers stuff happens before Spidey goes back home to planet Earth. He gets back to crime fighting and he likes his new suit, it can even supply him with endless webbing and suck his dick while he's wearing it. It seems a little too good to be true, and maybe it is. That's where Amazing Spider-Man #258 starts.
>>126355163Mary Jane is asshurt about something in this issue I guess.
>>126355198Ahh, Mary Jane has red hair like the classic Spidey costume, while Black Cat is black and white just like the symbiote. And now Peter has to choose between these two bimbos, very high level symbolism here.
>>126355110Is Secret Wars good?
>>126355214Dare I say. Kino
>>126355214The symbiote prefers the chick who wears matching clothes and forces Peter to shoot some of that sticky stuff on her.
>>126355230This issue also has some classic Puma appearances. I'm sure Puma will be getting his standalone movie any day now.
>>126355262I like how the symbiote just slides off him onto the chair here, it's neat.>>126355220It's okay, the art was cool, but the only thing it's really remembered for is the symbiote, and the symbiote was such a small part of it anyways.
>>126355277This for me is one of the coolest moments from Peter's history with the symbiote. The idea of it taking control of him and going out at night to fight crime, so Spider-Man is basically active twice as much as he was prior to the symbiote, that's neato.
>>126355289Even in his dreams Peter is completely ungrateful when it comes to the symbiote.
>>126355163I love how the animated series incorporated this cover into the intro.
>>126355318Here starts the history of the Fantastic Four in regards to the symbiote. They'll be showing up a lot in these early Venom comics.
>>126355332With the symbiote's weakness to flame, human torch actually continues to show up even into the Carnage era, but that's getting a little ahead of ourselves.
>>126355342Can't wait to see that fat Asian kid in the MCU take his crack at portraying Hobgoblin one day. Hopefully it will be in the same movie that has Indian Flash Thompson become Agent Venom.
>>126355383Find it very funny that Peter was too retarded to realize the symbiote was alive without being told so by Mr. Fantastic.
>>126355398And the very second Peter finds out that this is a living breathing creature, he immediately wants to get rid of it. Symbiote did literally nothing wrong here, Peter is just an asshole.
>>126355410A lot of people don't remember that the symbiote never actually tried to make Peter kill anyone, eat anyone, or do anything bad to begin with. All of that was later retconned in to make Peter look like less of an asshole here.
>>126355423Although, with some of Peter's thinking here, wondering what it was feeding off of, and the fact that the symbiote was taking him out at night while he was asleep, it is possible that maybe it was eating brains on those midnight swings.
>>126355477And in the end, Spidey gets the red head back after rejecting the hot black alien. Literal speciesism, literal bigotry, and he's rewarded for it. I guess the 80s was just a different time.
>>126355423Wasn't it becuase of the 90s cartoon?
>>126355483But that ain't the end of the story, oh no, not by a long shot.
>>126355483Humanity first, fuck aliens and their weird tentacles
>>126355488I'm not sure if there is one specific reason for it, as far as comics go, there's always that shifting continuity. I imagine that for various reasons, people wanted to make the symbiote and Eddie less sympathetic at different times, I know there's always been a vocal minority of Venom haters, and many of them have worked for Marvel.
>>126355495Next we have the first issue of Web of Spider-Man. A lot of Venom iconography that will be reused later on comes from this issue.
>>126355557Hell hath no fury like a symbiote scorned.
>>126355567Damn, forgot to crop that one.
>>126355608>get this you alien creepPeter is such a scumbag, it's unbelievable.
>>126355618>alien monstrosityThis is the interspecies equivalent to calling a black woman a black bitch or a black whore. Totally uncalled for. Demi Levato is honestly right about how we should talk about ETs.
>>126355423I don't think he's out of line for NOT wanting to be fused to another sentient creature. Especially when he didn't even know it was alive when he first put it on.
>>126355722I don't think I've ever been more bored by a Spider-Man villain than I have by these vulture knockoffs... Actually, wait, nvm, just remembered Kindred. These vulture guys are alright.
>>126355637>>126355651This sequence of Spidey vs the suit is great and it's a shame it has never been adapted
>>126355764This page is a classic.>>126355734They usually skip right to the bell tower bit, I blame it on these vulture guys being kind of meh. Makes it harder to see how cool the sequence is as a whole.
>>126355778>I blame it on these vulture guys being kind of meh. Makes it harder to see how cool the sequence is as a whole.I agree. It'd be an easy fix in an animated adaption to replace them with THE Vulture though.
>>126355795Even after Peter tried to kill it, the symbiote still saves his life. Parker never deserved such a beautiful creature.
>>126355778Any Spider-Man adaptation that doesn't do this scene is automatically garbage.
>>126355807R.I.P. in peace, symbibro. At least for a little while.
>>126355833We're almost to Venom now, but before we make it there, before we make it to Amazing SPider-Man #300, we've got a few stops to make. Like this page of Web of Spidey from issue #18. Pretty mysterious, right?
>>126355887And then these two pages from Web #24. Even more mysterious. I wonder who could be doing this sort of thing to Spidey, without even alerting his Spidey sense.
>>126355919Next, Amazing Spidey #298.
>>126355943Amazing Spidey #299.
>>126355958And finally, Venom is home.
>>126355963Now here we have it folks, The Amazing Spider-Man #300. The first real appearance of Venom. We're about to find out what this crazy character is all about.
>>126355995Note that he didn't kill Mary Jane. He could have, if he was Green Goblin he would have, but he didn't. First sign that he's not your ordinary villain. He knows Spider-Man's secret identity, and yet he doesn't abuse that knowledge.
>>126356009Heck, he didn't even rape her or tear her clothes or anything. Tremendous restraint on Venom's part.
>>126356025Our first look at Eddie, and he's already having conversation with the symbiote. Something Peter never did. This is another thing to note, some people will say that the symbiote didn't always talk to its hosts, but it clearly always talked to Eddie, we just don't usually see what it's saying in these early comics.
>>126356089Bimbo Mary Jane is something we'll never get back.
>>126356124Love this bit with Venom changing his clothes in the crowd each panel.
>>126356152>slowly peter's spirits begin to rise.
have a bump, OP. I respect what you're doing here
>>126356202Now this is a moment that really paints Venom as a baddie. The question is, do we care that Eddie and the symbiote kill a cop here or not? I'm gonna be honest, I don't.
>>126356224The cop honestly deserved it for pointing a gun at a guy just for standing around in a church. Also, here we have Eddie mention innocents for the first time. Literally his first appearance and he's already talking about it. But people will pretend he wasn't always an anti-hero.
>>126356273The contrast between Peter's opulent new apartment and Venom's rundown abandoned building that he lives in is pretty cool. A subtle thing that paints Venom as the underdog and makes him more likable than Spider-Man.
>>126356291>You may call me Venom, for that's what I'm paid to spew out these days!Kino.
>>126356337>I'd heard that exercise could reduce stress. It didn't work.Just line after line, Eddie can't stop being kino.
>>126356408Round One goes to Venom.
>>126356422Church bells and symbiotes go together like peanut butter and chocolate.
>>126356475Despite disliking Peter, I do like the way that he beats Venom in this issue. Using brain instead of brawn, it was neat.
Have another bump.
>>126356483And we're back with the Fantastic Four, just as much a part of Venom lore are Spidey is, desu.
>>126356493Ben looks like E.T.
Come on OP, I'm trying to go to bed
>>126356516There we have it, the end of Venom's first appearance. There's a lot more after this, several twists and turns, but to recap what's happened, Peter Parker scorned the symbiote and indirectly destroyed Eddie Brock's career, and as fate would have it, Eddie Brock went to commit suicide in the same church that Peter got rid of the symbiote in. There, the two of them bonded together, creating Venom, a being that exists solely to kill Spidey, but one that is not interested in harming anyone else. Despite only wanting to kill Spidey, Venom does in fact kill a cop, this saddens Venom, but he claims to have no choice. What does /co/ think, did Venom need to kill the cop? Is it a bridge too far? Or is it justifiable? >>126356484>>126356222Thank you, Anon! I appreciate the bumps. I'm going to take a short break, but I'll be back with Venom's next appearance soon.
>>126356551Sleep well, Anon. We'll still be here in the morning.
>>126356556I don't think he needed to kill the cop, but I also think that if he hadn't killed the cop, it would've interfered with his flashy plan to kill Spidey. The cop would've brought more cops to said church, and Venom couldn't have that.
>>126356591Another thing that I think as a long time Spidey fan, is that this should've been the end of Spider-Man. I love the web head, but things need to end some time. The quality of Venom's first appearance isn't as high as other Spidey stories in the earlier 80s. At this point, Spidey had finished things with Green Goblin, beaten Doc Ock thoroughly, and made up with MJ in a satisfying way. Venom and his defeat would've been a fantastic last boss and the return to the red and blue suit would've been a terrific ending to a 300 issue saga of the greatest super hero in New York City... instead we got the clone saga
>>126356632I've never actually read the clone saga, how bad is it?
>>126356556It took about a year for Venom to return, and when he did, it was with a bang.
>>126355318>its late afternoon! looks like I slept through another day! I've been doing that a lot latelyHoly fuck Spider-Man is still just as relatable as ever
>>126356720Amazing Spider-Man #315 starts with a prison break.
>>126356727Venom kills his second innocent here. First a cop and now a security guard. This guard, though, his death will have repurcussions for Venom much later on. Keep his name, Hugh Taylor, and his Army service in the back of your head.
>>126355423tbf this reaction probably comes from the simple sentiment that alien = hostile
>>126356754This second security guard, though. Venom doesn't kill him. He lets him live. So only two deaths so far.
>>126356767And now Eddie and the symbiote are hitch hiking across the country. He returns to mess with Spidey in the very next issue of Amazing, but there's actually something interesting that happens inbetween 315 and 316.
giving you a bump venomfriend
>>126356704It's not that it's the worst thing to happen to Spidey, but it's just full of retcons that were completely unnecessary. Also, the 90s in general just kind of sucked for Spider-Man. >his clone comes back>actually he was the clone the whole time>actually he was the original after all!>his parents come back>actually they aren't his parents, they're robots!>Green Goblin comes back>turns out he just recovered from stabbing himself in the chestAnd it just goes on like that for a while.
>>126356785Venom gets a standalone story right here, in the middle or his hitch hiking. This is from Amazing Spidey Annual #25.
>>126356812Right here, before he's even fought Spidey twice, he's talking about innocents again.
>>126356826This is all by the same writer, btw. This is all David Michelinie, the guys who created Venom. So far he's the only person who has written Venom, and Venom is already acting like more than a villain.
>>126355536God this cover is so classic. One of the best comic covers of all time.
>>126355183I forgot how much of a drama queen Mary Jane actually was. There was always the argument of how Gwen was a crybaby soap opera actress while MJ was supposedly always cool and collected, but I guess MJ just lived long enough to outlive this trope for female supporting characters in comics. Comes with the times I guess.
>>126356884And that's how Venom's first solo adventure, first side quest, ends. Kissing a baby and getting back on the road so he can go kill Spider-Man.
>>126356899New York City, here we are.
>>126356934And here Venom spares a hobo. Shame about the rat, though.>>126356790Thank you, my fellow Venomfriend.
>>126356941Seems comfy down in the Venom bunker.
>>126355110X-Men carried the 90's you zoomer chud.
>>126356980>>126357001Cope, seethe, no one cares about those guys.
>>126356115holy shit Peter is fucking jacked
>>126356885David Michelinie wrote terrible mj
>>126357117Venom vs Black Cat.
>>126355220In comparison with other marvel events yes. Doom was cool but it's certainly overstay its welcome
>>126357167Shame they'll never adapt this scene to the silver screen.
Oh yeah this thread reminded me that I should storytime Cates run before the new series begins
>>126356432He actually shifts into priest garb lmfaook Eddie is kino
>>126357247Love this meat packing plant fight, the setting is great. I think they used a meat packing plant in Carnage U.S.A. as well.
>>126357266And that's the end of Spidey and Venom's second fight. Going to take a break before posting more issues.
Bump thanks for the story time
>>126355110Based angry boomer storytimer.
>>126357278Thank you OP, you're doing the lord's work.
>>126355220It was the first domino in a lot of issues Marvel has, but it's better than a lot of stuff since.
>>126356727Wait how is Eddie all of a sudden in a cell?
>>126355318>YOU'RE TEARING ME APART, LISA!
>>126355122Wait did this machine "repair" Hulks trousers into still being ripped?>>126357106 (/fa/ as fuck)>>126357198What a mane
>>126355122Shooter really wasn't keeping up with any of his comics lol.If I remember correctly, smart Hulk was currently losing his marbles when he was transported to secret wars.
>>126357001Being a kid in the 90s, I didn’t care about the X-Men. Venom was always where it was at. Symbiote powers are just great. Too bad everything since the 00s completely wrecked their lore.
>>126355110You know I was reading this last week, they call it the alien suit saga I think. Thanks for reminding me to finish it.
>>126356922>>126359976>The non mutant super hero!Fucking racists, lol.
>>126355483Anon, this isn't a one-sided issue. The symbiote was not only unable to properly communicate with Peter up to that, so upon finding out the truth, Peter couldn't have known what the symbiote's intentions were. Especially since the idea of bonding physically and mentally with a symbiote sounds bad upon hearing it for the first time. It's also arguable that Peter's asshole response was likely due to the problems piling up in a day and the fact he was constantly tired and on edge, which the symbiote unknowingly caused. Afterwards, everything went downhill on both sides. That said, ASM #800 was a missed chance. I mean they had Peter bond with it,but NEVER talk with it directly. They really should do something on to addres since symbiotes are literally everywhere. Just do a mini where they actually talk about their separation or something.
>>126355833>>126355887wtf why did you not include Deadpool Back in Black /s
>>126356493I would have had him beat the shit out of Eddie after dropping. You don’t with a super-heroe’s family!
>>126355110This thread feels like it was written by Eddie Brock to make himself look good and make Peter Parker look bad
>>126356306I love it when the eyes on Spidey's black costume are so expressive, even moreso than on his regular red and blues.
>>126357254I like how the one main power difference between the two was just that Eddie was packing more natural muscle thus being able to overpower Peter. Later on with Carnage it turned into symbiote augmenting abilities which is why Carnage is able to overpower both Venom and Spider-Man at once in their first encounter.
>>126356483>>126356475>>126356463I now realize how annoyed I am that Venom was IN that same bell tower and lived...the bells didnt hurt him and its going off.Peter didnt use the sonic gun to finish him off cuz he was afraid of killing him yet he has no problem letting him fall to "his doom"
>>126358800It’s a lotta hair for a lotta woman
>>126356306I found it interesting that they just plop what at this point was a literally who to be an archenemy in his debut. Even Norman had a few issues before revealing himself as the Goblin. Peter seems relatively familiar with Eddie when we’ve never even heard of him at all.
>>126361945They didn't really know what to do with the character after Michelinie's original pitch got vetoed.
>>126356556Wait when did Venom killed a cop? I remember there was a moment like that in dark origins retcon comic, but it was shit overall, and I think it is ignored by other comics.
>>126361945>>126362184Yeah he was originally supposed to be a woman
>>126355122>Oh this forbidding black orb is making my spidey-sense tingle>better pick it up Goddammit Peter
>>126362560Peter has spider sense not common sense
>>126355423>>126355442this solves a 20 year old question for me
>>126355410>>126355423No, Peter was justified in wanting it gone, because as he suspects here >>126355442 it had to have been feeding off of him in some way.But I do think this gives the symbiote a better motivation for revenge >>126355495 rather than just being an evil alien monster. The movie/TAS version of it being evil works better for a short story, while Venom being an anti-hero works better for a monthly story told over many years.I also think the symbiote was a lot more interesting and mysterious when it couldn't talk, except through Eddie referring to themselves as "we".
>>126355230>B-B-BUT ORGANIC WEBBING ISN'T IN THE COMICSfuck you organic webbing is based and is the same thing as aritificial webbing, except it doesn't become a plot device when the writer needs easy drama
>>126355833>>126356362How did the symbiote go from saving Peter to hating him?
>>126355664damn dude old aunt may is kind of a huge bitch lmao
>>126364234>except it doesn't become a plot device when the writer needs easy drama Yeah we totally didn't get a whole movie about Peter's erectile dysfunction problems out of it
>>126355183fucking hell.marywhore is such a cunt
>>126364295It was probably because of Eddie's insane hatred towards Spider-Man plus the Symbiote had only recently learned to feel so it was probably overwhelmed by Eddie's hate.
bump until OP comes back
>>126355122>Hulk discoveres machine thar repairs clothes>still has ripped pantsOkay.
I really should go back and read a shitton of old runs for Marvel.
>>126355230Based symbiote knows who best girl is.
>>126364295Pretty sure symbiote still wanted to hop on Peter's dick for quite a while, even nealy ditching Eddie. Untill they desided to go full Eddie/Venom love story.
>>126355277>"that frightens me"I wouldn't have guessed
>>126355110CoolI got that issue recently
