Just saw them live and it brought the fandom all rushing back to me. I haven't been keeping up with the lore this phase at all though. Is there any more to it that "Murdoc started a cult"? Have there been any interviews with the band members recently?

Acknowledging 2D's abuse as anything more than cartoon violence for a gag isn't really Gorillaz' style, and the team hasn't taken the characters seriously since Cass Browne left. I have a hard time believing that there is any meaning in it other than Hewlett just deciding he likes white eyes more. It doesn't really make sense either, since 2D's white eyes first started appearing in Plastic Beach, and that was probably to most traumatizing time of his life.I do agree that the black eyes were cuter. Dark eyes with no visible sclera is a trait we associate with animals, so I think it makes him look more fawnlike and innocent. And it's a good contrast to Russel's eyes, which are blank for a different reason.
