NGE was done in the same way to some extent but here the new team clearly couldn't pull it off. Up until 3.0 I did see a vague general idea of a story/theme and characters, so 3.0+1.0 doesn't really feel that shocking to me and most things I expected. Their problem was never sitting down and defining that idea because now, in retrospect 1.0 is just a waste of time, 2.0 has shit happening every 2 seconds because they wanted to fit everything in a single movie and 3.0, while it sets the tone for what is happening well, feels a bit too slow when you have so many things to explore after it. 3.0+1.0 is like 2.0 in that way. Let's not forget their shitty fanservice too. I'm ok with fanservice when it's not tone deaf but in Rebuild it is like that 70% of the time. Like I've said here before, look at the scene of Toji and Hikari showing their baby to ReiQ. It's a very comfy scene and it makes me happy for Toji and Hikari but in the middle of it I get and ass shot of ReiQ for no reason. Those shitty 3D fights also count as fanservice btw, it would've been awesome if they were idk 5 minutes long instead of 10. I mention these because they are examples of Rebuild prioritizing fanservice over everything else. So sometimes fanservice is stronger than the story itself and wastes time that could've been used somewhere else.

Really they just suck at execution, but there was an attempt and you can analyze and understand the main characters just fine (Mari is difficult and simple at the same time though). You can find meaning and new meaning in Rebuild and the interactions between characters after 3.0+1.0. Even the hand symbolism of NGE/EoE is still there; but it's obviously inferior to NGE and EoE in many ways. There's also that theater play aspect of it all that is more noticeable than it was in NGE. I guess some justify things happening because they need to happen with that in mind. "The characters are acting in a stage/set, conveying this message to the public and the public decides what they got out of it"

In the end, him killing/using Asuka, Kaworu and Rei is resolved by "Shinji can take care of this later, he'll save their souls and bodies in the next scene so it's ok it'll be like nothing happened" and I don't think that's right at all, there should've been something more there, but the plot needed to move so it's something that doesn't matter in the scene because it needs to give closure to Gendo. I do believe that this isn't the case for the whole story. For example, Kaworu and Shinji's scenes in 3.0 are fine and hold weight, they are important for their characters and relationship. What doesn't hold weight is the main obstacle in the movie. Misato doesn't explain to Shinji because it's a plot device, Gendo wins because it's a plot device, Shinji doesn't listen to Kaworu because it's a plot device. It's just when the Eva and impacts and the end of the world are involved that things happen because they need to. Overall I think it's fine for Rebuild to be the way it is when it comes to theme/characters. I don't think it was ever trying to be something else in 1.0 either. Not when the main ideas behind it all were "entertaintment" and "to give Eva a hopeful ending". It's a toned down version, changed and arguably more straight forward than the original so I understand why there's people that don't like it at all, it's just that holy shit I wish Khara had done some things in other ways and had explored more.

The movies are written in a way that adapts to the previous one because they move retroactively, which is their biggest problem to me. I didn't like having Shikinami's whole story in a few minutes for example. Retroactively it now explains stuff, but I don't like it done this way because it asks me to just accept stuff that wasn't even foreshadowed (unlike Kaworu's arc) and then rewatch the whole thing again. And because it's a movie I didn't even get a true resolution to Rei and Asuka's relationship since they decided to focus on other things to move the plot.
