Why are American wines so overpriced compared to their imported counterparts? I can buy a pretty drinkable Bordeaux for $7 but any Californian red in that price range is virtually always dogshit. Why would it cost less to grow decent vines across the ocean and ship the result over here than it would for Mexicans to stomp grapes two states away? Are Californians really just overpricing the shit out of their vintages based solely on the allure of Napa Valley these days?

Because they can and the market supports it. Supply and demand, cocksucker.
>>

I don't understand this statement. Are you agreeing with me when I asked "Are Californians really just overpricing the shit out of their vintages based solely on the allure of Napa Valley these days", and elaborating on it?
>>
Turn your entire country into a vineyard like France and the prices will probably drop as well.
>>
>>17036173
That's probably the case, I don't know shit about wine so I'm entirely talking out of my ass. But yes, they're charging what the market can bear and people are buying it. Capitalism. That and running a business out of California is just inherently expensive.

>drinkable Bordeaux for $7
You can't find drinkable Bordeaux under 8€, they are known to be overpriced

European countries with strong wine traditions have heavy subsidies to prevent small producers from going bankrupt in a bad year. America only subsidizes massive HFCS concerns in Nebraska, so the only wines that survive are prestige cost-no-object cult wines, and people who produce swill for getting homeless people shitfaced

What do heavy government subsidies for the meat and dairy industry from 15+ years ago have anything to do with why US wine is more expensive than imported wine?

>>17036774
>what do agro subsidies have to do with capitalism
t. the brainlet who says "duh, econ 101" to win arguments he doesn't understand

Not everything's an argument you fucking dolt. Get help.

There are salads that cost less than a big mac though. Prices depend on the restaurant.
>>

Actual answer here:

California is expensive real estate.

A lot of the Bordelaise and other old world producers have owned their land for ages and so they don't have that expense.

Other new world producers have to pay off their mortgage too, but the land prices are just not as expensive as in California.

because lots of taxes for land owning, business, government permissions, enviroment bullshit, water because california is a shithole with no water, etc, etc.
in Europe you can just have a vineyard in your backyard and produce your own wine without having to cut an arm and a leg.

anything American is overpriced by definition because nothing in the country, especially the people, has any value. Americans are disgusting.

I don't know why, but this made me laugh. Something way more depressing about a homeless alcoholic drinking shitty wine as opposed to vodka or something.

American wine is a big meme. Easily the worst of New World.

OP is lying. There are some good blended Sutter home and Gallo wines for like 5 dollars
