Are most Cons even fun to go to anymore? feels like they've became more mainstream

Start by not going to corporate ones. I only have limited exposure, but from what I've gathered many (or most) of them in the Northeast are just that

>FRIDAY: 2 PM – 8 PM

>SATURDAY: 10 AM – 7 PM

>SUNDAY: 10 AM – 4 PM

It's $89 for a Friday pass, after fees, for a 6-hour day. There is no hotel attached, so the con shuts down at night. For comparison, a 5-day pass for Dragon Con is currently $115. if you go to these corporate cons, you are getting robbed.
>>

Jesus H, it's even worse than I thought. What a joke
>>10883791
And also Reedpoop
>>
What other cons should I consider if I enjoy these corporate cons and they are the only ones I've been too
>>
>>10884642

Basically any con where you can stay at a hotel attached to the convention center and has a party scene. You don't have to party, but the atmosphere will make it more fun and ensure there is stuff to do outside of normal business hours. If you're on the East coast, Otakon, Katsu, Anime Boston is okay. If you can travel a bit, Dragon Con, AWA, ACen
>>
>>10883698
Or you're getting too old for them and either need to stop or change things up
>>
Betting that ANYC will have a bunch of more retarded “inclusivity” panels.
>>
>>10883785
This is the significant difference between paying the staff and most fan conventions that rely on volunteers. Someone has to pay up.

The people complaining that for-profit cons should be paying everyone don't realize that the costs are passed along to attendees to make that possible.

Javits also makes everyone pay a fuckton of money to move anything around. Ask anyone in the dealer room how much of a massive ripoff it is on drayage. This is also passed down in costs to attendees along with the gigantic markups.
>>
>>10885771
I might have misheard or misunderstood something, but someone said in big cons the cost to hang a small light costs $5000
>>
>>10885913
As a person who deals with this, it is entirely accurate. This is called rigging. It's another astronomical fee that big cons deal with.

I hate that basically all the Northeast cons are corporate, and I know that's probably only because a smaller group of people will have a lot harder of a time getting a venue out here than elsewhere because everything costs way too much.
Is there anywhere in theory that a con could be held that's like... smaller? Like maybe New Jersey or somewhere further up north like Vermont?
>>
>>10886071
You want a '90s anime conventions in which everything takes place in a ballroom and hotel rooms at '90s badge prices of $20 for the weekend.

It's called a time machine. Please invent it.
>>
>>10886087
I still kinda see small conventions held in university auditoriums, Hotel lobbies and state fairs
>>
>>10886071
Seconding this. I'm also in the NJ/NY area and want to go to a con again, but wasn't too fond of NYCC/Animenyc. There really isn't anything in the area?
>>
>>10886071
>>10886087

Flame Con. It's like $30 a day in the ballroom of a hotel. it's small but also in Times Square/Theater District.
>>
>>10886273
Im NJ too im going to Derpycon end of the month and castle point anime con wasnt that bad
>>
is this supposed to be the anyc thread or do people hate this con so much that they didn't bother making one?
>>
>>10889061

Yes.
>>
>>10889061
some cons just don't get threads here
>>
>>10889061

There's zero con culture at this thing, no parties, hang outs, no hotel bar. The only thing to talk about is how you bought overpriced merch or how you saw someone in Genshin cosplay they got on Amazon.
>>
>>10886071
There's some small cons in the northeast I just went to that were fun. Did too much drunk driving but that's my problem.
Another Anime Con is around Lowell MA a few weeks ago that was fun.
>>
>>10883717
Some of you hype up small cons so much like sub 3k attendance or some shit
>>
>>10889364
>no parties, hang outs, no hotel bar.

Nigga youre an alcoholic
>>
>>10889437
If the venue is right and the attendees are cool, I'll take a 3k convention over some monster size event any day
>>
>>10883698
I remember precovid this con wasn't that bag. Now it's false scarcity overpriced bullshit. I get they need money to bring companies who bring guests but at some point it's not worth trying to go.
>>
Wonder if ANYC's a good one to get laid at
>>
>>10889847
it’s not even a good con period
>>
>>10889847

Well it's a commuter con with no hotel, so it's dead at 6:30pm. Your best bet is to go across the street to the horse stables where the homeless gay dudes hang out. I wish I was joking about that.
>>
>>10889912
Crunchyroll has something against cons and evenings. CRX was at the same place as Fanime, surrounded by hotels, and they had shit for night time events. They wanted you gone and out of the building ASAP the moment the last panel let out, and it was maybe 7pm at most. Actively herding people out.
>>
Cons without a main hotel are almost universally dogshit, because there's no designated place for everyone to gather and do shit after the con.
>>
>>10890019
Someone who actually gets it. Cons in hotels > with hotel directly attached > university / some other kind of venue >>>> massive county convention center. And the ones with no hotel attached draw in the worst crowds to boot
>>
>>10889956
That's because it costs money to pay employees or they have to have fans who care. Crunchyroll is a dog shit company who wants neither. Still can't believe people give them money.
>>
Seeing all those comments on ANYC guests announcements getting hyped for shit ass guests like fucking RDC World or begging for Christina Vee for the thousandth year in a row. Con has been overrun by normalfags.

>they don't have bros to explore NYC with after the con ends
lmao
>>
I'm like 90% sure someone could get in with a fake badge they don't really scrutinize them all that much.
Hell, I'd take a crack at it if I had images to use. The only thing that worries me is the shiny logo on the top right corner. That seems to be the only deterrent I can see
>>
>>10890157
I live here, not much too explore that I haven't already seen
>>
>>10890270
as someone who knows how badges are made, the average printer cant put out a convincing enough fake to pass on a glance the colors simply dont match
otherwise yeah you could do it just get the right kind of paper and laminate your results
you shouldn't be faking badges for cons worth going to and theres nothing of value at ANYC
hell i can say that for NYC itself but thats another topic
>>
>>10890270
Last year some guy got in all three days by using a Friday badge. He stuck close with crowds and put the badge in a sleeve with a fake vax card in the front. When passing by any of the staff he'd just show the back of the badge which all looks similar.

Friday’s over.
Dunno why I really went.
I keep thinking this year will be the one I make some friends and all, but it never happens. Talk with some people, get some shots of cosplayers but never really like, hang around and talk about what we like. It just seems like everyone’s groups are so insular.
Got a couple of more days to change that, but I doubt it.

I think I was trying too hard to hide in a crowd and didn't expect me to have a badge to begin with.
Was asked during the walk up, and again during the security check. They were Javits security and not con staff so that might've been why I got though still. Was never asked when I actually made it inside, though I still avoided staff and crew. This year they didn't check for badges when going inside the exhibit hall, so that also helped.
Honestly I felt more from the rush of sneaking in than I did the con itself, until I participated in a photoshoot.

Con sucked
I'm faking a badge for next year.
Worst thing they could've done is eject me.
Feel like a sucker for not trying earlier.
>>
>>10891964
My expectations were unfortunately met. This con didn't feel as corporate as I expected, but it did seem like the only thing to do was buy stuff. (Maybe just a Sunday thing?) I spent the entire con just walking around the market portion and played smash bros for a bit. It was pretty depressing being alone but I saw a ton of people that were also alone and misery loves company I guess.

>>10892222
I also regret not faking a badge. I had a legit badge but it was in my pocket the entire time and no workers even glanced at me. Only hurdle is just getting it past the front Javis staff.

>Con sucked
Lol I doubt you a actually went to the con. If you did you would have explained exactly why it sucked. Go back to Twitter

I actually went to the con and it was fine. A lot of independent shops occupying much of the floor, corporate stuff is in its own section, so you can generally avoid it. Everyone was pretty friendly in the indie section, no major drama or events today.

>>10892226
>(Maybe just a Sunday thing?)
There tends to be more stuff on the Friday and Saturday, no official after parties on the Sunday. There are panels, but they are elsewhere in the convention center. There are also autographs, but you have to sign up in advance for them. It has all your typical con stuff, but the con is big so its hard to notice and find everything.
>>
>>10892237
Yea, I as there Sat and Sunday and had a good time flying solo. I will say the panels felt fairly meh this year, barely even tried to go to em and the few big ones filled up way too fast, even with the reservation system. But even the big panels didn't feel all that special. And there were virtually no screenings of lesser known or older shows or movies and that kinda sucks.

A few years back they had a screening of Project A-ko and it was a blast seeing all these kids react to a classic like that. I think it'd be great if they just had one panel room just doing a classic movie marathon all weekend or something, they have the room and screenings are always popular.

As for the Vendor room, it felt like a lot of the bigger companies stayed home. Usually they dominate the center of the main show room, but this year they were fairly tucked away and contained. In general it felt like there just weren't as many vendors as usual, which was kinda nice because it left more space to actually travel through the aisles without feeling packed in. I also liked how Artist Alley was in the main showroom, usually when it's off on it's own I forget to even check it out. But I got some nice little trinkets from there this year.

I don't know if I'd be willing to go to this in august though. It's already way too hot in the hall this time of year, I can't imagine how bad it'd be in the summer.
>>
>>10891878

>>
Yo, security were fucking cunts this year, they're usually aloof and kinda stupid, but goddamn they were assholes this time around
>>
>>10892255
Oh yeah I had that at my booth too.
Mostly just a bunch of 4-5's with unwarranted self importance, their boyfriends getting uppity because I'm speaking to their girlfriends (it was never the fat guys with girlfriends getting angry, they were nice in my experience), or the muscular retards trying to threaten me cause I'm literally doing my job.
I hate the people in this city sometimes.
>>
>>10892271
One part I hate about working a booth is cool/cute cosplayers I want to compliment, but can't stray from cage. As well as cute potential customers who I actually have great conversations with, but I definitely feel like trying to pivot into a conversation of interest is both too fast and inappropriate.

Approach a cute girl and talk to her (probably about weeb shit). If it goes well, ask for her number and/or what she's doing after the con and if she wants to hang out.
Do this a few times and you'll find someone.
It's not impossible that some nice gf will find you, but it's like a twice in a lifetime thing, you shouldn't expect it. You have to put yourself out there, that's all.

fuck getting a gf how do i meet people at cons in the first place?
>>
>How do I meet people at cons

Why do so many people out themselves as normies. Literally just cosplay. It doesn't even need to be very good. Just recognizable enough that other people cosplaying from that same series will want you in their group. Helps to do a character that's usually left out of groups for whatever reason, or a character from a series that is popular enough to have cosplayers, but not one of the trendytrash series that has 20 separate groups. They won't need anyone.

Just use your damn brain and actually put in the effort.
>>
>>10892321
I just talked to people who had cool stuff.
I talked to 2x Chris Chan cosplayers, a Doug Walker cosplayer, and the guy at the hentai booth with the TempleOS hat, and they were all based.

If you cosplay people will approach you.
I had 3x friends do some One Piece cosplay (I think I don't watch that shit) and they got stopped constantly, over 30x times easy in the day, with people talking to them and taking pictures. One of them had a giant pipe they made and even people on the street stopped to talk to us just because it's noticeable and funny.
I had a friend do a King Dedede cosplay and it's funny to see the difference between the One Piece fans and the Kirby fans.

Just talk to people who have stuff that makes you think they're like you, or dress up as something that will attract the people you want to talk to.
>>
You guys are asking over and over again how to make friends when you could have just...offered to do a meetup. While I didn't go to this shit, several people I know did. Ditto with the other two cons this week, Colossal North and Kumori. All far apart from each other but I got in with "the scenes" just by responding to people who asked to meet up

Went Saturday to the concert, I don't know why they put on a concert with sawano in such a small area but I'm lucky that I got in early and could see the stage. For some reason after co shu Niue set they stopped using the cameras to show the stage on the big ass monitor. That was disappointing as it was hard to see sennarin with the foam tube lights they handed out. But all 3 sets were really great with minimal technical issues. Getting into that area was another issue, very nearly crowd crush conditions with really pushy assholes around us

I didn't go to the cons but that'a definitely the AnimeNYC audience. A lot of people like to say that normalfags ruined the con but it was ALWAYS like this. The attendees have a nasty habit of being incredibly entitled and do whatever they want. The most polite people I met were the stereotypical nerdy looking guys and the actual normalfags who were here out of curiosity with their weeb friends. These two groups had manners and didn't act like absolute tards compared to the "real" weebs acting like 12 year olds on meth.
Anyways I'm really glad to hear you at least enjoyed the concert despite the issues. I'm hoping next year will have more things you can enjoy!

What's the deal with the Chinese cosplayers and photographers who set up camp in the North building entrance, where the big security shutter was? They were there all weekend and never moved, or allowed other people to use that space. I took mandarin in school, but I couldn't understand them because they were mostly screaming Chinese memes at each other.

New Panty & Stocking panel was legit good. It was a live drawing, they teased stuff from the new show, and the Japanese guests were high energy and open to draw weird shit. Honestly the worst thing about it was the audience, all the audience suggestions were lame, like telling them to draw a washing machine or pizza rat. When they ignored the audience, they were drawing Elon Musk as Iron Man launching giant dicks into space.

Once you had the reservation you just lined up for the panels as usual.

The reservation didn't guarantee any entry, it just made it easier for the event to not be stacked with a massive line of people who wouldn't get in.

>>10892490
>>10892505
Who is the target audience?
>>
>>10892703

Bruh, its called a convention. Do everything you would do in a dating app, but put that effort into your con presence. Cosplaying is the easiest way to do it, but other people can do it through being good at photography or just being able to talk to people. But it's like stats, you can min max your points or spread them out. But you have to have to put in the effort to make yourself look good, have skills that are useful to them, or give them entertaining conversation.

I'm thankful for the anon who told me last year to put effort into cosplays girls will like, I got approached by and asked for pics over 100 times (I know because that's how many business cards I gave away). A pair of girls almost fell down the big stairs trying to chase me down for a pic. I'm not good looking, but I'm tall and thin enough to cosplay the twink baby girl characters that girls like. Only one girl stayed with me at the end to go get Korean food, but I could have gotten more if I were better at talking to them. Still a decent experience, and I've got a dozen I'm chatting non-stop with on IG. I feel like I'm building up my skills with every encounter.

You don't have to be good at everything, just pick a few things to focus on and you can get with people at a con.
>>
>>10892763
I know all this, but I was working a booth, had no real time to experience the con itself
>>
>>10892763
I started cosplaying and get asked for photos but interaction ends after the photo is done how do I maintain a conversation?
>>
>>10892763
Why do retards think they are going to get a gf at a con?
>only a few days
>many travelled and live nowhere near you
>>
>>10892765

The conversation ended because you let it end. Keep talking to them until they leave, ask them what they like about the show you're cosplaying, ask them how their con is going, about panels, merch, whatever. But if you have to ask how to continue a conversation, you don't know how to have one in the first place. You'll fail at first, but you literally have thousands of attempts at a con, so get your mistakes out of the way.

>>10892766

Keep thinking that and staying where you are in life. It's New York, so it's a commuter con, most of the people there traveled from the 5 boroughs. Your chances are actually way better at NY cons if you're a local, since ANYC is super inconvenient to travel to, there isn't even a hotel attached. I made a point to ask people where they were from, and only a quarter were from outside NYC/NJ. And you don't need more than a few minutes to get into someone's DMs.

>think women are going to pick needy and intrusive (You) instead of rich NYC white guy #99 with weeb interests on hinge
Nigga doesn't even realize the only reason why he didn't get security called on him is because he's tall.
Nothing wrong with trying to make friends and possibly aiming for a con/weeb girlfriend, but be realistic. Nigga sounds like he's a rapist
>GOTTA HAVE THE RIGHT MINDSET
>GOTTA KEEP TALKING TO EM
>ASK EM WHERE THEY LIVE/FROM
>ASK THEM WHERE THEY'RE GOING NEXT
>KEEP THE CONVERSATION GOING
>THAT'S HOW YOU GET WOMEN BRO
I say this as a sex haver who got digits at the con, don't listen to these retards. You're going to get arrested if you try half the shit he does.
The con is a great place for introverts to make friends, but keep in mind that nerds are just as shallow if not more shallow than the normalfags outside of the convention. If you strike out, that is not failure on your end it's theirs for missing out on someone as great as (You).

Almost got a gf at a con I *wasn't* a local at, I cosplayed someone she was a huge fan of and she pursued me, we got talking on and off over the course of a few months and it felt like she was simping for me, but I never really wanted to push it cause I don't fuck with LDR's. Ah well.

They haven't changed

>>
>>10893563
My experience in 2007-2012 cons was that way more people were friendlier and there to have fun with what little industry booths we had
Cosplayers were more than happy to let you take their pictures, guys were more than happy to chat about their favorite anime, traps knew that only a specific group of people were actually into them and just enjoyed being treated with respect.
Nowadays it's 90% guys working out everyday to get laid at cons, girls and troons acting like they're a celebrity with the former only allowing "professional" photographers the honor of taking pictures of their taobao cosplay (this used to be a slight meme back in the day but it's increased exponentially over the years), and a bunch of not so thinly veiled politics shoved into panels. That's just my experience though.
But hey, at least we have more industry presence now.
