Fanime rule are so strict. Any props resembling a weapon are not allowed inside the building. No dressing up as an OC character.

Where does it say that? That’s fucking retarded if true.
>>
>>10829618
it doesn't. you don't even have to dress up, so of course you can dress up as OC.
>>
I met Sachie at Fanime once. I hope to see her again. I have a lot of questions for her regarding the scandal she's been in recently.
>>
>>10829563
>>10829618
At least make your lies believable.
>>
I met Lilypichu at Fanime once. I was too shy to say hi to her so I hope I have the courage to speak to her this year.
>>
Unless they bring back all their usual programming I'll likely not go. Shame, I bought a 4chan pass solely so I could make the posts to wrangle people.
>mask/proof of vaccination still required
Holy shit why. They have to REALLY bring in some good attractions to get me to go now.
>>
Fanime is just a large ponzi scheme nowadays. They have burned every bridge they ever built with their shady business tactics and lack of accountability. Then they try to ask people to be nice because they're all volunteers? NO. YOU STEAL MONEY. YOU LAUNDER CHILDREN'S MONEY. It's absolutely pathetic and 100% a scam con nowadays.

What a stupid policy.
>>

I think they mean actual government agencies. A bunch of randos with slacks and ties doesn't count.
>>
>>10830168
Iirc if you're actually military and show up in uniform, you're in the clear as long as you can prove that you're not pretending to be in the military. I've seen actual military dudes in fatigues in Fanime's dealers hall before.
>>
>>10829980
The lack of programming wouldn't even be as bad if Fanime's staff weren't the worst fucking people on earth.

>yfw never again experience Fanime with good guests and actual things to do at the con

>>10829650
I hope this means airsoft larpers get shown the door.

If you have a later booking slot, book outside of the con reservation system. The only hotels left are the ones several miles away.

I keep wondering why, but then I remember Fanime is near the pozzed mentally diseased Bay Area.
>>

>>
How bad has San Jose gotten since pre pandemic?
>>
>>10841043
Tbh it’s pretty much back to prepandemic status. Anons like to meme on the bay area for being lib sheep or whatever but in reality, almost no one is masked anymore. The few people I’ve seen still mask are food service workers or paranoid crazies. Fanime has a mask and vaxx card policy but imo they’re highly likely to drop it day 0 or right at the start of day 1 bc it’s going to take forever to check cards (you can fake it anyways like people from last year kek) and there will be too many attendees to enforce masks.
>>
2 and a half months out and we still have shit for guests
>>
>>10841194
Fanime is a party con. Who gives a fuck about guests and panels?
>>
>>10841194
Is swap meet back? At least masquerade seems to be happening again so the rest of the programming will hopefully follow suit.
>>
Prediction, they will absolutely not follow through with the mask mandate, the pandemic is finally over and too many cons have already happened where it was perfectly fine without them and at that this point they're not going to bother trying to make it the thing you have to do to attend, especially with how many people go to this con

>>
>>10846800
I’m local to the bay and no one here is masked anymore. There’s a 99% chance that >>10843845 will be right and Fanime will drop mask requirements on day 1.
>>
>>10846801
i hope you're right. i'm not crossing the atlantic ocean to wear a mask again
>>
>>10846801
>>10846803
Prediction poster here, I'm doubling down on it for sure, I have absolutely no doubt the mask mandate stuff won't stay. I have friends that went to PAX east and various smaller cons and friends currently attending EVO Japan who say most people are fine and no masked up, it's fine if people want to wear it just to avoid any sickness but I'm definitely not believing for a second that people will follow the rules and the con will just be like whatever it's fine.

We're already well past the pandemic and now the endemic and things are finally back to normal thank God, if they try to seriously heavily enforce it it'll just look dumb, especially with how many cons have taken place this year that were well off without those policies
>>
>>10846803

Only Doubletree since it's the only one you need a car to get to/from. All of the other con hotels are within walking distance, although AC is quite a long walk.

It's weird as fuck. Most people in California don't give a shit anymore. Even the people wearing masks have made it a personal choice and don't harass others about it
>>
>>10855203
It's a huge pain for staff to deal with/enforce, I think someone in management just got their mind broken by covid; they kicked out a vendor halfway through the weekend because one employee took off their mask to eat lunch.
>>
>>10855173
day zero mask requeriment dropped.
calling it now
>>
>>10855316
that was last year which, while still overcautious, wasn't completely out of whack given the norms worldwide. now, it's straight-up weird. even in japan it's a personal choice and they have signs saying as such.
>>
>>10855316
>>10855320
>>10855338
Said it earlier but I'm absolutely calling that they're not going to end up enforcing it by at least the end of day 1 or 2. The world's back to normal, everyone is vaxxed up or is generally fine, enough people have spoken against it and many cons already have been doing well without it so to have it be mandatory would be a detriment to the event.
>>
>>10855413
I live in SJ and am thinking the same thing. I haven't seen a single masked person in forever. The last time I masked up was last Fanime.
>>

>>
>>10855525
>>10855638
It's still weird that they operate like this though, they've been around for almost 30 years now, became one of the biggest and known anime conventions in the US and they're still late when it comes to posting news and updates about the con.

Since you're new, go with the flow. Take everything in, see the sights. Don't feel pressured to see everything, because Fanime isn't really big on guests. Once you go regularly, you'll get an idea of what you want to check out.

...and go to CWF.

same, lmao. I wonder how many are boots and how many are people coming straight there from Moffett.
>>
>>10841043

Yeah, the only places that really enforce mask are smaller cons, and even then, as long as you're vaccinated, no one really cares if it's not some power-tripping con dude with a grudge.

A few stores are gone, and Cafe Stritch's replacement now charges for weekends, but it's the same as always. I miss that ice cream place where Umi Hand Rolls is now.

This is weird, but I agree with both statements. I think it's worth flying out if you've got friends here and love the DJs, but I've considered not going for a while, because capeshit cons offer more for me.

>>10857023
They claim it was “last minute, unforeseen” but it doesn’t help when another guest has backed out as well

How long until this con goes into a hell in a hand basket?
>>
Gonna get fucking crucified but I'll admit it: I like the mask and vaxx mandate. I care for children with cancer as my job and I deserve to have fun too, and by requiring mask and vaxx I have less of a chance of getting sick and getting my patients sick.
>>
>>10857050
people in your scenario (and anyone else worried about getting sick) can use a n95 and focus on personal, individual defense without regard to forcing a blanket mask requirement in that case
>>
>>10857023
the state department is fucked right now. processing times are all fucked up.
>>
are the /vt/ waifus there this year?
>>
Oh theyre enforcing the mask mandate? No shot I go.
>>
Yeah the masks fucking suck. You have to wear a mask during karaoke, too. Why am I at a convention just to not even be able to see other people’s faces? We’re all vaxxed so this just feels performative.
>>
>>10857082
immunocompromised anon here.
here's the problem with mask mandates: they were always a platitude and functioned on the assumption covid was droplet based. but it isnt: we've known for over a year now it's aerosolised. this means that unless you're wearing an n95 that fits perfectly, the mask isn't doing anything. cloth masks? useless. paper disposables? useless. anything with a "filter"? useless. mask has a gap anywhere in the seal around the nose and mouth? useless. ntm recirculated air. the masks DID reduce unrelated things like flu season so hospitals could prioritise covid, but they should've just said that.

it literally would've been safer to tell everyone "don't bother with masks, but move all events and person to person meets to outdoor venues" but instead they told us to stay indoors and wear masks, and made it so pointing this out makes you sound like a conspiracy theorist.

personally i would've greatly enjoyed an outdoor convention. but i guess it's too late for that. now it's a virtue signal.
>>
>>10857050
If you wear a mask and have gotten the jab, then you have a higher probability of getting sick. If you disagree, then you have a low IQ -- in which case, the probability is even higher.
>>
Is it worth trying to get badge today or should I just go tomorrow
>>
>>10857128
same here should I go tomorrow
did I miss anything today
>>
>>10828623
I remember in the sakuracon thread someone schizo ranted that the mask mandate exists cause the con was full of MTF trans people and they want to hide their face, and I think about it everytime this comes up at a con.

is fanime an anime convention? or is it as autistic as sakuracon?
>>
>>10857112
Outdoor cons would be something like jpop summit was in the past when it was in Japantown or cherry blossom festival. Jpop summit was actually really successful (popular) but ran into funding issues because it was on public streets and therefore largely free. When they moved to fort mason the costs went up and they went on indefinite hiatus after that.

There's a guy who wants to revive it but he's an average Joe and doesn't have any money or knowledge of how event running works
>>
>>10857147
that actually sounds pretty fun-- i was imagining renting a lot or something carnival style.
>>
>>10857149
It was basically a street fair with a main events stage (peace plaza) and the restaurants and stores of Japan town on top.

the thing about ax is that even if it's on paper they won't do shit about it. last year when covid was still a thing yeah you were supposed to mask and be vaccinated but no one enforced the masking, and the vaccinations, the minimum wage workers stopped giving a shit halfway through and would just slap a band on you even if they didn't actually look.

ax 100% only had it on paper so people couldn't cry about it and try to sue them for not having one
>>
Good on Fanime keeping up with the mask and vaccine requirements. We should never lax on this again. Make it a permanent fixture in all conventions because Covid us never going away.

>>10857308
>>10857308
You're an idiot. Vaccines, sure but the masks don't do shit unless you're combining that with social distancing or have a perfectly fit n95. Its still nuts to buts in halls and anywhere with a line. If you wanna keep wearing one go for it but making it a mandate still is perfomative at best. Fanime is over. Nothing but hambeast and and to OPs question troons that are still obvious even with a mask. The same over priced drop shit junk I the vendors hall and the same tired ass artists selling shit merch that's mostly OCs no one gives a shit about or last years leftovers that didn't sell. To show the stupidity of the mask mandate, Hirokatsu said he didn't want to wear a mask and Fanime didn't stop him. If they really gave a shit they would have required him to wear one too

It was a green camping chair. I didn't bring it today.

Anyone outside? If you see a white guy in a day off sweater say hi. I'm hanging by the trees for a bit.

Fuck there are a lot of trees. The ones bordering the Marriot.

Just showed up today, anyone have recommendations for things I should do/see/buy? I haven't gone to many cons and I'm a bit overwhelmed desu

Go to CWF at 6pm. If you like <popular thing> then you'll like artists/dealers. Otherwise there won't be much of anything for you.

absolutely nothing to do. it was boring.

are other cons better? this was my first one and it's disappointing as fuck
>>
>>10857826
Yeah, pretty much. You go with friends, and maybe if you really like a guest. I keep telling myself to go to Kublacon or Momocon instead.
>>
>>10857826
CRX and SiliCon is unfortunately cancelled but I preferred the guests. There's Fan Expo in SF later this year and the first was great.

Do MagWest and California Extreme if you are local.
>>
>>10857826
Fanime is a horrible con for a solo. You really need to know people or be good at talking to people.
>>
>>10857873
just go to park con and get drunk and say stupid shit

Holy shit I need to make some friends. I have no clue what I'm doing here.
>>
Worth going on monday to check out the fashion trunk show? I'm local so it's not super out of the way.

>>10854429
How is it? I'd expect meta's stock to be pretty picked through by now but who knows.

>>10857202
>>10857232
Any FGO presence in AA?
>>
>>10857885
MagWest and California Extreme, and the former is 24/7. They're both gaming cons, so if you don't care for the panels, you're busy with games.

California Extreme isn't panel-focused, but then it is, it's cool boomers talking about how game dev and design was, back in the day.

Sac Anime, any version for sure; the panels are actually good and even though there's technically less to do, it's very well run.

I haven't gone to HornetCon yet, but the guys who ran Krakencon have never failed me before.

If CRX ever comes back, that's good.

If you don't mind normie capeshit, Fan Expo in SF, unironically. The guests were pretty hyped and it wasn't super crowded.
>>
>>10857826
Literally one of the worst cons I’ve ever been to and I’ve been to a ton. Just go to any of the suggested ones. Really liked CRX last year at the same venue.

>>10857909
I’d say no since it’s really small
>>
>>10857910

ty
MagWest is happening at the same san jose center that fanime was at today. I think I'll go to that one.

Fan Expo in SF might be cool too
>>
>>10857921
Just Doubletree. I'm not sure how long they'll have it for, because they're about to do major renovations. It's normally in Fall, so I'm a little concerned the hotel's trying to fuck them over.
>>
>>10857921
You can tell if a con treats its guests well if the big name dudes are just all universally hyped. Honestly, I've been liking capeshit cons, because even if it attracts normie, there's a wider variety of guests. Krakencon used to have animators who worked with Walt Disney and stuff like that.
>>
i had fun :)
>>
I had fun, though it was my first con. I wished AA wasn't just genshin merch though. Best panel was CWF wrestling.
>>
>>10857926

>>
>>10857993
How are you going to make friends if people can't tell who your are on a day to day basis? At the very least discord
>>
I won at charity golf so I guess I'm going next year. Hopefully the vax/mask restrictions get dropped and they get guests that can follow through and show up. At least CWF was fun.
>>
>>10857993
Well, that, and IRC. But I get you, social media's mostly cancer. Shit, I've nearly been doxed before, and there apparently used to be some /r9k/ group that deliberately set up fake /cgl/ meetups to mock anyone who showed up.
>>
>>10857974
Go. I'm going. It's nice to hang out, even if it's mostly done.
>>
>>10857931

what was the CWF wrestling panel like?
I missed it
>>
>>10857885
AX has always been at least decent, even if I'm solo or with really shitty friends. The sheer amount of attendees, stuff going on, and cosplay tends to make it entertaining.
>>
>>10858081
why would you go with shitty friends

People in cosplay trash talking the other cosplayers and a large crowd yelling for 3 straight hours. It is the best fan panel now by a wide margin
but I still liked Banzai Arcade better ;_;
>>
>>10858095
Are they even still doing cons in wherever they moved? Iirc the main dude is in the Midwest now.
>>
>>10858098
Last I remember the guy's laptop that had the whole thing on it got stolen. He's done other panels at fanime since but I think he said banzai arcade was not going to ever come back.
>>
If we were allowed to post from mobile internet, I would have replied to a lot of people to come meet up. The Marriotts internet was down could post an open room to help finish like 20 bottles. Hopefully ax is better.

Most public+mobile IPs have been range banned, I think that is a main contributor to thread deadness. I bought a pass just so I could post while on the go, but I wasn't in one place long enough to get something going.

Yeah I might have to purchase one before ax. Not really down for unsecure public WiFi.
>>
>>10858099
I'm honestly surprised there aren't more goons casing Fanime. When I worked for Cinequest (the San Jose film festival), we had a guy who had all his camera setup stolen.
>>
>>10858104
>>10858109
For 4G/5G, AT&T isn't banned, but Comcast is. That said, my ban only applies to /co/, for some fucking reason.

Speaking of, it sucks LAN had so much issues this year. I talked to the staff, and according to them, the new guys in charge of McEnery are charging them more to up the bandwidth.
>>
>>10857826
If you like /tg/ shit, Kublacon is up in Burlingame on Memorial Day weekend. There's Pacificon on Labor Day weekend at Santa Clara, but it clashes with Sac-Anime. Big Bad Con is also in Burlingame.

Anime Riverside is a thing and they had a shitton of anime VAs this year.

Has any of the AOD staff unretired?
>>
>>10858111
Yeah I'm surprised there aren't more robberies given all the photographers, myself included.

>>

>>
How did this go from being the best con in California to the worst con?
>>
>>10858146
Drama, oversaturation, and more focus on partying than guests.

I've heard Fanime doesn't get a lot of good guests because of past maltreatment, which always weirds me out when I found out Gainax personnel used to stop by pre-2010. On top of that, Anime Expo and other cons just pay out more, and given people still hold grudges about AX and Fanime at both cons, I wouldn't be surprised if it's AX deliberately trying to strangle Fanime. Last time I showed up to a WRAC meeting, even the East Coast cons knew Fanime was run like crap.

Everyone used to come to Fanime, even if you were only into capeshit, Western cartoons, or sci-fi. That changed when SDCC became a hype machine, I think, because now you really needed to get to Hall H instead of blowing money at some weeb con.

And, really, the zoomers, millennials, and Gen Xers don't give a shit as long as they get to party with friends. The people who want panels have fucked off elsewhere.

Kind of a shame, really. Also what >>10857583 said. It really changed around 2014.

I do wonder if Fanime will ever return to form. Them getting Haruhi's VA probably took an act of God.
>>
>>10858117

>>
>>10858150
>>10858152

>>
Would the city ever allow drift races and shit?
>>
>>10858169
Maybe if you had an organized and insured event held on a track or private property where the owner allowed it. If you mean some sideshow guerilla shit that'd get shut down
>>
The mask business might have been because of liability issues with the staff and the city and somewhat acceptable, while the vax rules were quite excessive, and probably not even particularly effective.

>>10858116
What're YumeCon's emphases on, anime and jfashion? how's the guest lineup usually?
>>
>>10858164
They do, but I can't remember the last time they were on the Dealer Hall floor. There's also the guys who show up and park around the hotels.

>>10858169
Very likely not, there's a huge issue with sideshows. Even if the city knows Fanime's deal, they'll cite the last time San Jose had a Formula/Le Mans thing, and if I recall, that was a clusterfuck. The roads weren't great for it, and they're even narrower now.

>>10858161
DAAAAAAD.
>>
Why did AA suck so much this year?
>>
>>10858187
San Jose stopped officially requiring masks ages ago. Any mask or vaccination requirements is solely on an event
>>
I feel the same way; it felt like there was just so much genshin stuff and I don't care for it.
>>
>>10858087

I met that dude after his panel and he signed my badge. He's cool as fuck and I respect him for saying not to the mandate.

Five bucks days they're all zoomers who only take Caltrain. I've passed on jobs because I'd need to be taking BART daily.

Sometimes, usually after sundown. Around noon, most people wanted you to show it.

had lots of fun, took many photos and had many people ask to take a photo. i just wish we didn't have to use masks by now, I prefer pics without them...

Yumecon has no money so they only get volunteer “guests” (really just randos trying to get their 5 minutes of fame). They got an English va last year but it’s literal whos otherwise.

I went to the smash bros gathering in lieu of there being a splatoon gathering. After having seen the Jojo meet up that day and especially after seeing the chainsaw man gaterhing the day after, I have to ask what the fuck was up with the guy running the SSB meet up? Easily one of the worst gatherings I've experienced in my years at fanime but leave it to fucking smash bros to be good at something

that's some optimism you got there, anon - assuming you believe next year will be more well- put together. this year was the most meh Fanine in recent memory. it's been reiterated every which way in this thread already, but it seems like the most fun people had didn't actually have anything to do with the con itself. i kinda have to ask myself if $85 is worth just hanging out in SJ for a weekend with very little to actually do in the con proper
>>
>>10858913
That's basically every fanime for many years. You have maybe one or two guests you like and the rest are whatever. You're more there for your friends that you only see one in a blue moon. It's more chill at Fanime than ax so you can actually spend time with them

I'm an artist. You need to sell popular shit so you can afford to sell less popular stuff as well. Plus I can still appreciate a character's design and style from an artistic perspective without knowing much about the source. It's a different kind of appreciation. I think that counts for something.

I've also personally become interested in shows or manga because of the cool fanart, so either way I think it's a positive thing. I understand where you're coming from, though.

Prediction:
Fanime will have a rule against arm wrestling or other physical activity like that.

That was outside the con center where their liability ends. They don't have control over what happens at the sideshows.

Are volunteer hours waivers worth it?

It sure doesn't look like it. The staffers I see look pretty overworked and have very little communication. Doing a panel to get the badge comp'd seems like a better cost/time ratio.

>shipgirl gathering
That’s what Carriercon is for
>>
>>10859234

that kinda goes back to another talking point i've seen in fanime threads in years past: staff seem to be running a big con as a little one. seems to be part of the reason why they haven't gone back to the 24h format yet; they can't find staff and/or volunteers who want/are able to pull the graveyard shift
