2023 Anime Expo / AX Los Angeles meet up thread
Talk about what cosplay you're planning, what you're planning to do, what you're looking forward to, past AX experience, give tips with any cosplay help etc.
>>
Last time I was at AX was 2018. Been a few years because of trying to get money for the travel then when I was ready covid was in full swing. Can't wait to go again this year though
>>
>>10828288
Lmao op you're making this thread a little early
>>
>>10828290
I figure to give everyone a good amount of time to talk about potential cosplay ideas. Help try not to make it a last second type of deal. Before we know it months will go by and some might not be ready or wish they had ideas way prior
But you're not wrong lol
>>
Someone recommend me some male and female characters who wear cool masks, preferably anime. I wanna do cosplays where I don’t have to bother with doing makeup.
>>
>>10828299
Can always cosplay as Tokoyami and put on a bird head mask and just wear casual clothes for an easy cosplay
>>
>>10828287
What’s the mask policy?
>>
RIP premier badges
>>
>>10828416
Well Line Con is going to be fun and getting a hotel close to the con will be a super bitch
>>
>>10828416
>>10828419
AX is about to take to have their own Comic Con Hotelpocalypse.

At least they are helping you save money during this recession.
>>
>>10828416
I honestly thought they were going to keep upping the price and cutting perks for years to come.

Trying to get JW Mariott is gonna be a mega bitch lel.

>>

If it helps you feel better, the premier badge kinda sucked and was a waste of money even if you had cash to burn.
>>
how does booking hotels work? I went last year but stayed with a friend
>>
>>10828448
Here's an old link on how'd it usually go.
https://www.anime-expo.org/2020/01/07/anime-expo-2020-hotel-block-information/
Now with premier getting discontinued, it's probably going to be even more hectic trying to get a decent walking distance hotel when the general block opens up.
>>
>>10828453
ah so basically a mad rush to book, damn
>>
>>10828455
Yep, when I tried getting a hotel last year I was there the exact minute the block opened up. Still couldn't get JW Marriott.
>>
Any guesses as to when hotel block will open?
>>
>>10828458
Regular attendee last year here, just check back around late May when guests begin to finalize. People begin to drop out when none of the guests interest them or when someone in their room catches Covid.
>>
>>10828474
I forgot to mention that I was able to get a room around that time.
>>
>>10828476
damn trying to get a room late May seems risky.
>>
>>10828287
I was planning on making Sailor Jupiter for this year's AX, but I started my big girl job and haven't touched it an inch since buying the materials. Part of me is sad about that and wants to rush to finish it on time and another part of me just wants to say fuck it buy a costume for the interim.

>what you're planning to do
I went with a close group of girlfriends last year and it was such a great experience. I'm hoping I can pull them in this year too but the prices have risen and idk if it's worth it for them since they're slightly above normie in their passion for anime. My best friend will definitely go with me (and in costume) though so I'm excited about going with her atleast :)
>>
>>10828419
Last year they managed to curb the linecon-iness at the entrances at least. Can't say the same about Dealer's Hall, AA, food lines, or panels though :(
>>
>>10828521
You have almost 6 months to make a costume, that’s plenty of time.
>>
I'm guessing what's happening is that they're going to offer a bunch of add-ons (limited qty) for the badges by splitting all the perks into single items. They will make more money by charging by perk (like autograph, priority sign up for an event, early lineup for x event on y day) AND know that some people will pay the money and miss the perk timing anyways.
>>
>>10828532
Not when you are a corporate office cuck like me.
>>
I caught up with someone who staffs with AX at ALA over the weekend and he informed me the reason why they are got rid of Premier is because the SPJA is about to hand over control of AX to ReedPop and one of the conditions is to ditch Premier Passes.
>>
i thought they were ditching premier because vendors, especially japanese ones, were pissed at the autists coming in early. many of them blamed the attendees for theft iirc
>>
$145 for 4 day pass wtf. And the schedule is kinda weird being Sat-Tues.
>>

How many years before AX becomes like SDCC where buying a badge is impossible and they get auto scalped by mechanical turks within seconds?

Last year's 4 days sold out two weeks before the event, but I'll chalk that up to it being post-covid and AX2022 sucking hard with zero guests.
>>
I've been to medium-big cons like Sakuracon and Katsucon and liked them a lot.

But Anime Expo is huge. Is it like, more fun? less fun? How does it compare?
>>
>>10828287
I'm wanting to meet up with anyone: boy, girls, trans, and hook up. In cosplay or not. Preferably in middle of con when starting to feel worn out, back to your hotel, let it all out, and then separate ways and enjoy the con. Also I want to cosplay as Naofumi from Shield Hero

My career and home/social life just take up so much of my time and energy that there isn't much left for me to finish in that amount of time. I know its more than enough for most people, but I'm pretty slow. I've been averaging about 1 year with my projects which is equivalent to about a weekend's worth of work every month or two. I'm also a beginner sewist with no permanent work space that hasn't worked with stretch fabrics before so I'm anticipating some learning curve which adds to the time.

Seeing you point that out does make me wanna put aside more time to finish though!

>4th of July is the third most packed day, but this year it's a Tuesday and the last day of the con instead of being in the middle
>>
>>10828583
Honestly I don't forsee it becoming THAT popular. AX is a great deal above other cons, but not to the level of SDCC where you're getting news on several upcoming blockbuster movie projects and tv shows, or once in a lifetime guests. Especially now that the bubble is popping on anime popularity and post-lockdown/mask activities, the crowd attendance will probably level out to its 2019 rates. Most people who went in 2021-22 had never been to an anime convention before and were making it their bucketlist event. Now that they've experienced it, I doubt a majority will return to AX. They'll probably fuck off to a cheaper con if at all.
>>
what are some other california cons that are also worth going to? fanime?
>>
>>10828588
I recently went to LACC which is held in the exact same convention center and the difference between it and AX is astounding. There was maybe 10% of the amount of attendees at LACC as you would expect to see at AX. There's a reason those pictures of everyone flooding the main hall prior to the con opening get posted on everyone's feed each year. There's just a massive amount of people who go.

To answer your question though: it depends on what you're looking to get out of a convention. If you like the industry, the ability to meet big names, or shop from big brands, then it's great. Some people feel that it's too overcrowded, too impersonal because of the sheer amount of attendees and lack of ability to congregate really anywhere except outside of the con center and therefore prefer smaller conventions to do so.
>>
>>10828607
Mask requirements are most like mask suggestions at this point since no one really reinforces it, but probably yes. I'm guessing the wristband vaccine check too
>>
>>10828641
ALA just passed and people really seem to adore it. The only other one I've heard of is Sacanime and Fanime

>>
>>10828653
Influencers are literally killing cosplay, you approach them and it's like a business exchange, they just want to network and don't even watch the things their costumes are from.
Some literally do it to promote their onlyfans, the sign rule was relaxed last year and you had sluts with those LCD display backpacks playing back video of them getting fucked and handing out business cards.
>>
>>10828638
>anime bubble popping
It's accelerating, if anything.
You used to not be able to find anime graphic tees outside of hot topic but now they're fucking everywhere.
Combine that with Crunchyroll censoring more and more of their releases, and Twitter screeching lasting longer and longer with every new FOTM, it's pretty clear that more normies will be coming into contact with it, not less.
>>
>>10828675
Yes well generally before a bubble pops its accelerates

how much is it through AX?
>>
>>10828741
As a guy in hospitality, that's standard. It's literally the July 4th weekend, inflation probably only accounts for like +$150 for that.

What I fear though is that room blocks will also scale with that +$150.
>>
>>10828744
probably $300 a night
>>
>>10828583
it's going to take more anime fans getting older and being able to afford things in order to get to that point. that's part of why SDCC is expensive, because motherfuckers don't think twice about dropping $300 on a badge and the same per night on a hotel, and even more than that combined on merch.

anime still being more of a young person's game means that there will still be lots of poor weebs and unable to immediately buy. so many people who waited til the last minute, got shut out, and then got scammed by people who prey on those desperate for a badge.
>>
How good is the Residence Inn and how good is the courtyard? Can i bring guests or do they do the wristband shit?
>>
>>10828818
The other issue I have with SDCC is that it's just a massive marketing mill for "nerds". It's an event that's literally the Funkopop to AX's Nendoroid.

Imagine paying to be cattle for shitty ass Western pop culture bullshit corpos like Marvel and DC? Can't be me.
>>
>>10828821
you really have to find that one thing that makes it worthwhile. as an anime fan it's generally in pretty short supply at sdcc, but this year i was able to get an autograph from Hidetaka Tenjin who has been one of the main mechanical designers for a few Macross series. whether that's worth hundreds of dollars is another thing, but i did do other stuff during the con as well
>>
>>10828825
For the overall cost and hassle to get a pass though? I don't think it's worth it.

I think I can find my own fun but SDCC just feels too cynical for me as a convention.
>>
>>10828827
i've been going for almost 2 decades. it's pretty easy to get a badge if you have a couple friends. if you're going solo i can see it as being a pain in the ass though.
>>
>>10828675
Like the other anon pointed out, I'm saying that we've reached peak with the normie community coming out of the bulk of quarantine since that's when they all started watching it. The appreciation and popularity is still there but we're reaching the deacceleration point. Some are going to leave normiehood and join our ranks, others are going to find a new interest.

>AX is a great deal above other cons
Hot take but here it goes.

I feel AX has become too big for it's own good. The merch is shit you can find at ALA, Fanime, Sakura con, etc. The ticket costs along with hotel costs are dogshit in value, you go to AX in the awesome summer heat only to get into a swamp ass infested convention center. Vendor hall merch is actually higher than what the same vendor might sell at a similar con because booth costs lol, very few exclusive merch vendors to pick from to justify the price. Panels boast big names but fuck me if I have to wait nearly 90 minutes in line just to get to a panel I can basically yt later and then listen to "ask the questions" to a VA/Influencer/whatever that are easily google-able answers. Music guests are what you make it though doesn't seem like Japanese guests are flocking to any cons just yet.

Even with room sharing, AX is kind of hard to justify in price as you can often knock out 2 other cons for the price of a weekend of AX in LA.

>Industry guests will do the exact same
>"Local" guests of honor are worthless as always
>Still either zero or near-zero actual entertainment/fun panels
Why are people excited for AX?
>>
>>10830855
Which would be stupid because the only time the fire marshal got mad last year is day 1 when there was nothing to do so everyone was crammed into south lobby for the exhibit hall. Once the hall actually opened and people had space to move into it, the problem went away. People were also expecting to have to spend hours in the security line which is part of why they came early. Now that they know they don't have to, they won't all come in at that time and be packed in the lobby waiting for the hall to open.

The other issue is that anime fans are still a lot of broke ass kids who can't drop $145 immediately

I can imagine it selling out sooner than last year (which was the first time it sold out before the con iirc) but not in an hour. I assume people who had fomo last year will be on top of it as well as people who have gone for years but I can’t see it being that much of a run on badges considering how much people procrastinated last year even as AX announced that they were almost sold out and then went *shocked pikachu face* when it did sell out

You know you nerds could actually pool if you both weren't so autistic, worried the other person was a serial rapist/murderer, worried they're just weird, or scared of making new friends
I don't have any stake in it, I just think it's nicer if people are more willing/able to be friends
>>
>>10830477
You need a strategy to get into panels now more than ever considering Premier has gone, look at the schedule on what rooms are cleared between panels and get in the room well in advance before the panel you want begins. Also don't bring a bag to avoid bag check hell.
>>
>>10830130
not a single fuckable person there
>>
>>10831034
There is no more bag check hell. You just walk through the scanners and they only trigger off really dense things like batteries, and then you just show them oh it's my battery and they let you through. The scanner gives them a general idea of where on your person the trigger was so they only have to search that particular area.

to buy a ticket? they go on sale before the hotels do. you have one hour gap between tickets on sale and the hotel block. good luck.

fug, got a boxing class during hotel block opening. How quick does hotel block fill up? I usually stay with my parents in the valley during AX but I wanted to try for a hotel this time.

a) skip/reschedule class
b) piggyback off a friend

i know exercising consistently is important and shit but there will be many, many more times for you to take your classes that aren't time sensitive, and the hotel block only opens once.
>>
>>10831190
I just have flashbacks to trying to get a 3080 GPU on launch, waking up at 6:00AM only to beat out by scalper bots in literal seconds. Is that worth cancelling a class for? I'll try to get my brother who I'll be splitting a room with to try and nab something close.

No idea since I haven't stayed in any of them; all of the block hotels should either have shuttles or be within walking distance though.
>>
>>10832008
Stayed in Indigo before, pretty nice place, was walking distance to con. Worth staying at if you can snag but have a feeling it'll go faster than others due to distance.
>>
So are they going to tweet out a link or something for the hotel block or do you do it through the individual hotel's website? I've never done this before.
>>
>>10832008
I've been staying at the doubletree since 2016.
It's nice because you're right next to plenty of good food (Little Tokyo), you can get two queens for cheap and it is pretty easy to get in.
Shame there's not that many parties.

I stayed there when it was the Wilshire Grand back in 2011. It took me roughly 20 minutes to walk to and from the LACC. Maybe wear comfy cosplay if you're going to stay anything further than the Marriott properties. Even the Indigo is already far as fuck to walk to the con in the LA summer heat.

I'm confused-last year I booked my hotel around April, months after the block opened up, and there were around seven hotels open that were within a mile of the convention center. >>
Anyone manage to get a room under $200/night?

People cancel due to travel plans, friend not going, PTO not accepted. Right now it's all reserved because not one is paying or a deposit is requested.

Are the butler/maid cafes worth going atleast once? Never been to one at a con but I've heard there ultimate cringe but I wanna experience one
And will it be awkward if I go to the butler cafe as a dude?
>>
>>10832490
Not at all. The butler maid cafes are not really an experience. They are glorified restaurants
>>
>>10832490
not worth it. due to various reasons, they're nothing like a japanese one. convention ones are held in random panel room with some tables. you're at a big table with a bunch of randos, and you get 1-2 maids who are basically only there to facilitate some games between you and the other people at the table. your group doesn't have your own "exclusive" maid. they cycle around the tables. they do some cutesy dances a few times, you can take some photos at some point, and that's it.

food/drink is limited to basic stuff because it's not an actual place with a kitchen, but a panel room. the line is going to be long and don't be surprised if you barely get your drink by the time it's over.

i went to it for free a few times because i knew the organizer and it was still a waste of time

>>10832500
calling them a restaurant would be very generous lmao
