Some outfits from fictitional media are impractical to wear out in real life, and it's perfectly fine to modify an outfit that you enjoy if it makes it possible to go out and around in. With OP's example, chafing, sweat and general discomfort while walking around all day on the convention floor, is a valid reason to modify the outfit to make it practical. It's not about being faithful, it's about appreciating an outfit you like but knowing it's not possible to wear out as it is without accommodations first.

I personally don’t have a problem with modifications but it has to be done at the actual design/pattern stage to look good, such as modifying the bottom to not be a thong or adding mesh or spandex panels to hold stuff securely in place.

You can get them to match pretty much any skin tone and cosplayers used to use them all the time, they seem to have disappeared recently though. The waistband might have been an issue with the tights route but some are pretty subtle and it still would've been better than the blue shorts.
