Is Otakuthon in Montreal really bilingual or is it mostly french? I'm from Ottawa and have been told Otakuthon is a lot better than Anime North (which I am skipping this year) but I can't speak french and I'm afraid I'll be a bit lost
>>
it's 80% french. not sure who told you it's better, unless you like 2hu fags
>>
>>10778805
2hu?
I've been told its better because it has actual programming while AN is literally just a bunch of people in the parking lot while the convention has zero interesting guests or noteworthy events. Otakuthon seems like it has cool events, some gaming tournaments, good stuff, high attendance etc
>80% french
Ah shame. The website has the option to choose between french and english and everything is in english so I thought I could make do with just knowing english
>>
Chien
>>
Hijacking this thread to ask about hotels. The website offers a discount on 2 hotels near the convention. Is there any reason to choose one over the other? They're pretty similar in price and quality. Where are the parties usually held?
>>
>>10778804
tons of degenerates from toronto go to that con. it's decently run and has enough of a roster of interesting international guests that make it worth it. and yea, people speak english in mtl, just dont expect to be spoonfed and everyone to be 100 fluent in english

also, vive le québec libre!
>>
>>10778804
the other nonnie is an idiot, the programming is mainly in english, probably closer to 75% english programming. if you get sick of doing stuff at the con, you're right beside chinatown so you can grab good & cheap eats, and also right above a metro station at the palais du congress if you wanna do anything else in montreal

why is captcha impossible to do what the fuck
>>
>>10779442
go fuck yourself, speak english you fucking retard
fucking quebecois, they should make french a banned language in all of canada.
>>
>>10779469
no it's not lmao.
>>
Everytime one of you 6 rat faced Leafs makes a post about your dead cons I wish genocide upon y'all. You don't see other irrelevant (Eurocucks) groups making threads for each of their individual cons. Keep this shit in a general.
>>
>>10778804
It's mostly French I think. I haven't gone in years and don't remember if there were more panels in French than in English.
>>
can i travel with someone? i'll sleep on the couch
>>
Haven't been in years but they're bilingual. There were many French-only panels but getting around wasn't an issue in general
>>
Finally going after 7 years, pretty excited.
>>
Question for those who may know.
Was hoping a friend would be transporting a prop sword from Toronto to Montreal on Via Rail. Its about 4 feet long and moderately heavy, is it possible for him to transport it?

idk about travelling but if you're willing to split a hotel room with me I'm interested. I've been looking at hotel prices and its pretty expensive by myself so I wouldnt mind a roomate as long as you have good hygiene.
Was thinking we could get one of those rooms with 2 queen beds at the Hilton one block away from the convention center. Its a bit less than 240$ a night so split that would be 120$ CAD each per night.

Anyway, if you or anyone else is interested in a deal like that just message me on discord Charolion#1930 and we can talk about it and discuss ideas.

and if its relevant, I'm a 20 yo male and doing cosplay. This is my first time at Otakuthon too and I'm going solo, hoping to meet people and make con friends and stuff.

Thats exactly what I was thinking while looking at the map. Now we just need a time and place.
Time would probably be around noon for lunch, either Friday or Saturday. As for the place I don't really know the interior layout of the con center and dunno where would be a good spot to meet
>>
>>10779482
we were here first retard, you guys stole the name canada and the national anthem from us, try to be original ostie d'anglais
>>
>>10778804
Its a pretty bilingual con, sure most of the attendants prefer speaking french but we're pretty accommodative, sometimes panelists will even ask "hey if some people here don't speak french we can do the panel in english" the website and any information is available in english, thw workers are bilingual, etc. It's a pretty comfy con you should try it
>>
Been going to otakthon since 2014 or so, I feel like the con vibe at least has been slowly more English speaking over the years as more people from Ontario are going in favour of AN and the Francophones there just roll with it at least when their friends from the GTA are around

That being said I also go to get away from AN so I'm not really helping with those numbers
>>
>>10784479
yeah there's definitely been more anglophones, i remember back in 2014 we could have panels in french but now theres always two or three people who don't speak french at panels so they have to do the panel in english. I've never been to AN, is it a bad con or do people just want to go to more cons
>>
>>10784813

how can I convince them to let me sleep on their couch for a weekend for Otakuthon?

>>
>>10778804
Bilingual
>major events have both English and French narrators
>staff can talk both languages
>plenty of events for both side (usually back-to-back)
>bandai and other video games publisher have their own panels
Meanwhile Anime North has barely any panels, and if they do: it's mostly lgbt shit. It's only worth it if you want to play vidyas with others, take pictures of cosplays and buy shit
>>
fug, Otakuthon is only in 2 weeks. I haven't reserved.
>>

Neat, nice guest.
>>
>>10784233
Oo, I'm also in the server and am down for anything. Chinatown makes the most sense as it would be the most convenient and there's lots of options. Just seems easier to meet there instead of dealing with crowds and trying to find everyone inside the con. For the day I'd prefer Saturday since I'll be driving up from the GTA Friday, it would give others a chance to get settled as well.
>>
>>10778804

We're organizing a /cgl/ meetup at Otakuthon here. Come visit if you're new to cons or you want to meet other seagulls in Canada. For now, we're looking at reservations for food places in the Chinatown area.

Don't expect much for this year. Many old staff left since covid or from pure frustration with the organizers. A lot of new staff replaced older ones across all level of positions. Many of whom is their first year managing any event, some fresh out of university just waiting to power trip. All while many staffer who should have been banished a decade ago are still around.
It won't be AN level of disaster but it certainly will mimic it's older brother.

A fair warning from an old timer
>>
>>10794376
yes but you have to perform sexual favours for the mods and regularly post feet pics
>>
>>10794376
Nta, ofc! There's pics of AN and Anirevo that were just posted. It would be nice if you wanted to chat or were coming to Otakuthon and wanted to hang out but there's no pressure.
>>10794484
At least they did badge mail out and aren't checking for vaccinations, so the registration line-ups can't be the same levels of fucked up right?

Otakuthon is going in the same direction because good staff quit and bad management.

Here is all the positions they had to fill since february (archives for 2020 and 2021 are missing): https://web.archive.org/web/20220217044349/https://www.otakuthon.com/staff/

It was good as usual. Can't compare to anything else because I only go to Otakuthon. The line for the cafeteria was much longer than usual. Not allowing people to watch panels standing up is dumb. My takoyakis were undercooked.

I wish they would do more events so I don't have to wait a whole year until next time.
>>
>>10797420
It was great, lots to do and the dealers room had good merch. Only thing that annoyed me was the genshin overload of cosplay, but it was still great there was other stuff.
Only real downside was flying out back home, airports can suck a dick

I only saw a few seagulls as well, could have tried to meet up with more but there was too much other stuff I wanted to do in and around the con. Staying at the rave till 3am on Saturday tired me out a lot. I ended up skipping out on Sunday entirely lol. Felt really different from AN where I was just chilling in my hotel room most of the time. I liked this dealer's room more, they had 3 kimono vendors as opposed to just the 1 and a half at AN although not much lolita stuff. That one hat/accessories vendor was really nice though and I picked up a few things. Next year I'm considering staying for more than just the weekend.
>>
>>10797514
At the 3rd floor (7XX), there's a cafeteria with a japanese-themed menu. I had bad luck with the takoyakis this year but generally it's really good.
