I see this con overcorrected and is now running a racist cosplay contest...

"The 1st place winner will be crowned “Black Cosplayer of the Year! With a combination of cash, prizes, and cosplay guest articulated invites (the 2021 winner guested at 3 cons following Blerdcon), the BCOY will return as a guest cosplayer for the Blerdcon 2023! All this in addition to a 4k photo and video shoot ON SITE!!

The Black Cosplayer of the Year will also win a trip to Costume College 2023 in California! Costume College is an annual three-day costuming arts conference created and produced by Costumer’s Guild West, Inc. The prize package includes airfare up to $400, student tuition for lectures, workshops and demos on all things costuming, a two-night stay at the Warner Center Marriott, and tickets to the tea and gala "
>>
Well if last year was anything to go by if they award anyone but a black cosplayer high award this year the con will riot. I've never seen people chimp out so hard.
>>
>>10762024
It's a con for Black nerds (blerds), you ninny, of course the contest is for Black cosplayers.
>>
>>10762032
Except the con itself keeps saying it's for all races

Unless it's first place, then only black people can win.

What are they going to do, require a family history to prove you are black? Tell people they aren't qualified to win because they don't look "black enough"

I hope this blows up in their faces for how ridiculous it is.
>>
>>10762050
>mad because the *black* nerd convention wants to pick a *black* cosplayer to win
anon serious question: are you retarded
>>

I mean it nakes perfect sense the Black con wants Black people to be highlighted and win competitions. Honestly why would a white person try to compete and win? Seems like weird attention whore behavior if you're not at least some form of minority by USA standards to go to a black people event with the goal of beating the black people in their cosplay contest.

This is just as normal as an all female con letting other people attend but reasonably wanting only women to win if it's basically implied to be a women's cosplay contest. Or at least a cosplay of a canonically female character I guess since crossplay is a thing.
>>
>>10762058
You'd be okay with a whites only convention that picks a "White Cosplayer of The Year" then? kek
>>
>>10762072
Name one women only anime con. That's not even a real thing.

Do I have to drop my pants and show my Vageen to participate or are we taking my word for it because of the trannies?

Oh boy, a racebait thread. That's just what we needed. Can we get this to devolve into Covid fearmongering, fat hate and "femoids" vs "moids" while we're at it? Betting we can before this time next week
>>
>>10762076
It's not a real thing but let's be real if an event says "this event is in support of and funded by and for X group" and it is even in their name, then no shit they will favor X group.

What kind of insecure jungle fever white person goes to a black specific event to compete in a cosplay contest against black people for validation? Just seems weird.
>>
>>10762072
>Honestly why would a white person try to compete and win?
One did last year
>>
>>10762082
The con itself keep saying it was open to everyone stop being so pig headed
>>
>Why a “Blerd” Con?
>Blerdcon is an event that highlights and celebrates Blerd culture and creates a marketplace of ideas where sharing that culture can take place with proper context, attribution and positivity in an inclusive environment.

>Blerdcon celebrates our connection with LGBTQ, the disabled, POCs and the international community! All are welcome to partake in the experience as we are an open community who love all the same nerddom.

Their website's cosplay contest page also makes it sound VERY MUCH like the black cosplayer of the year is a very different thing then their main contest
Supposedly someone asked online and they said it was the top prize, but I can't find it myself.

It'd be really shitty if best in show was automatically disqualifying someone that might be a foreign-language immigrant with a disability who made a better costume than anyone else (and thus would be even more impressive given their disability and barriers due to not being a native english speaker) only to win basically a runner up prize.
>>
>>10762082
Are you just ignoring the part where the event itself keeps saying the contest is open to everyone EXCEPT winning 1st place. You cannot win first place unless you are black. It's not like they added a new award to recognize black cosplay, or that they exclude everyone who isn't black from participating. They are trying to have it both ways claiming anyone can enter but then not everyone is eligible to win the top award because of race. It's fucked up even if they are marketing to a niche demo.
>>
>>10762091
Nobody cares
>>
>>10762087
the con and contest is but the first place prize is not open to everyone by definition of being a winning prize anyway so cry harder
>>
>>10762089
>It'd be really shitty if best in show was automatically disqualifying someone that might be a foreign-language immigrant with a disability who made a better costume than anyone else (and thus would be even more impressive given their disability and barriers due to not being a native english speaker) only to win basically a runner up prize.
Kek anon what bullshit this is insanely unlikely. I get it's an extreme for the sake of argument but they're not entitled to be given a bunch of resources outside of their basic needs (which disabled peeps in the USA rarely get anyway) for a hobby just because you see disabled people as so lowly and infantilized that it's inspirational porn when they do something that a non-disabled person could easily do. And they can still win any other place. What about the black disabled person that doesn't win and is not a native English speaker because an able bodied white woman wins again like last year?
>>
>>10762071
you remind me of the people that get mad that their anime cosplays don't win the cosplay competitions at the non-anime conventions
>>
NIGGERS TONGUE MY ANUS
>>
>>10762101
I'm sorry, did you just suggest that a disabled person could never win based on their skill level and only on sympathy points? JFC
>>
DESU this whole concept is weird. Why make a con that caters specifically to one race? They want to claim that anyone can come to the con and compete, but they can’t win? Just close it off to other races like they clearly want to then.
I feel like this is going to backfire, I’m really tired of every black cosplayer who throws on a wrinkled taobao cosplay and unstyled wig complainng about not getting enough attention because of muh racism. Even though anyone without a big following and who isn’t a skinny young girl doesn’t get much attention. I can only think of one black cosplayer off the top of my head who actually makes their costumes/wigs well and that’s Vickie Bane. Feel free to drop the handles of others but I never see any.
>>
>>10762085
To be fair though, that girl was encouraged to enter the contest by her black friend she was attending with. She didn’t even think she would win anything, but not a lot of people entered with handmade cosplays and hers ended up being the only good quality one so she basically won by default. Honestly felt bad for her for all the backlash she got, but her friend who encouraged her and the judges who picked her didn’t get shit on.

The whole thing is kind of ridiculous anyway. The con shouldn’t pretend to be welcoming of all races when they truly want it to be a black only space. I don’t even have an issue with them wanting it to be a black only space, I just think they should say it outright otherwise you set people up for failure like that girl from last year
>>
>>10762072
Seems weird to have a "black people con".
Would you be complaining if a black woman went to a "white people con" and won because she shouldn't have even been there?
>but muh history
Does not ever excuse double standards when dealing with people in the present.
>>
>>10762101
what? I was saying that if you have a condition that might make working with tools more difficult, then it's more impressive if your skill matches that of someone without the disability.
There's a lot of disabled cosplayers out there.

And This con is happening just outside of DC. Tons of immigrants up and down the coast there.
It's not an unreasonable scenario even if it's fairly unlikely
>>
>>10762174
>Why make a con that caters specifically to one race?
mostly because there's a subset of the black community which has really taken possession of geek subculture to create their own flavor of it and they want to revel in it.
It's not that surprising, given the rise of social media.
Still not a GOOD idea
>>
>>10762024
OOOOH SCARY BLACK PEOPLE THINGS OOOH OOOH AHHHHH IM SCAREDDDD SOMEONE HELP MEEEE MY PRECIOUS ANIME !!!!!!! ???? 4CHAN TOLD ME TO BE MAD ABOUT THINGS LIKE THIS
>>
>WOAHHHH why black people would ever want a separate cosplay group WTF???

Don't be disingenuous retard.
>>
>>10762246
Imagine being so much of a newfag that you don't remember the era of people like Proudtobeasian saying the exact same shit about white cosplayers... Are you actually that pathetic and insecure that you feel the need to create racially segregated cosplay contests because you can't handle someone posting meanie words on the internet? I genuinely don't see how it's not racist as fuck to imply that black people are so inherently inferior to white/asian cosplayers that they need to completely eliminate them to have a chance at winning kek
>>
>>10762172
No genius I said that it's not inherently more commendable when a disabled person does the same shit as an able bodied person. And we hate it when you use us as "inspiration" by thinking "wow they could do this even though they have a disability" as if it's difficult or you expect so little of us.

The unlikely part was that some random ESL disabled nonblack minority person would even attend Blerdcon and happen to win first place in a cosplay contest there. Why would they be at a black con? How would they attend and know how to buy tickets if all the communication is in English? That's the part that is unlikely, that they'd even be present or compete at all given the circumstances that were laid out.
>>
>>10762197
>Would you be complaining if a black woman went to a "white people con" and won because she shouldn't have even been there?
Literally yes I would and tell her she's a dumb bitch for doing it.

And the con isn't black only it's celebrating black culture, but it's weird to go and try to win something that cost money from this con designed to support one group when you're not in that group, which accepting a prize for a cosplay contest like the black cosplay of the year prize listed kind of is.

Even the white woman who won last time was pushed to participate when she didn't plan to which further proves most white people wouldn't even WANT to go there for the purpose of competing in a cosplay contest, they'd want to attend just to be with their friends who went. But people ree over the possible exclusion because they think they're getting one over on black people with the "but why can't I say white power" shit when even in the fantasy land where a white pride con existed most nonwhite people would be smart enough to to try to jump in and win a supppsed white only cosplay contest.

Plus the argument that it isn't inclusive is a lie. Inclusive means everyone can participate not that everyone can or will win. And Black cosplayer of the year just can't be a non black person based on the title, AND people already said that there is no official confirmation that Black cosplayer of the year is the same as the cosplay contest winner.

What happened to doing stuff for the joy of cosplay and crafting? Would you never cosplay if it wasn't to try to win a prize in a contest? That's weird too imo
>>
>>10762199
>what? I was saying that if you have a condition that might make working with tools more difficult, then it's more impressive if your skill matches that of someone without the disability.

Yes and people with disabilities hate it when you think that way of us because we can do a lot of stuff other people can just fine. Disabilities don't mean we're not capable of basic tasks like sewing and crafting. We're not the heads in jars from Futurama ffs we do still have some of our limbs or organs. And not every disability is visible from the outside too so you can't even tell some of us are disabled.

It's just seen as dehumanizing because saying it's more impressive of a disabled person to accomplish something considering our disability implies you expected less of us to begin with.
>>
>>10762262
Ok so because it's unlikely we'll just ignore the exclusion. Seems fair.

Forget the ESL part of it. What if a disabled person entered and hands down had thr best constructed costume
but couldn't win qst place because they aren't black. Con itself says its a safe and welcoming place for disabled people. It's very understandable someone might want to attend a con that advertises its accommodating to their needs. Still think we should just ignore it because it's the "black con"?
>>
>>10762267
There are black disabled people too idiot. And no one said we are not allowed for being disabled. I just think your attempted argument was ableist. But you don't care about disabled people you care about attacking the black event.
>>
>>10762272
So you should win the award over the other disabled person with a better costume because you happen to be black?
>>
>>10762272
>attacking the black event.
The problem is they didn't handle it right
They created a special, opt-in prize for black cosplayers to elevate them to the level of guest status. That's fine, good even.

Gutting a regular contest to do it, denying good prizes to a lot of people because you're paranoid about racists throwing another fit like they did last year when a non-black person won, that's objectively bad.
Also, don't presume someone who has a different opinion than you doesn't care about the same things you do. Opinions are formed from information weighted by experience.
Someone who's lived a very different life than you might have very different ideas than you on how to fix the same things you want fixed.

>Black Cosplayer of the Year
Would be funny if the winner was black but also mixed and white passing.
>>
>>10762073
Given everyone's obsession with chinese and nip cosplayers it doesn't seem unreasonable all things considered.
>>
>>10762314
We going back to the one drop rule?
>>
>>10762249
It has nothing to do with winning and everything to do with racism. A lot of people hate blacks. You can sugarcoat it, justify it, or whatever, but the truth is a white woman would not get the same flak. So why are you surprised that someone black who likes cosplaying would just rally around a more black space? It's not like they don't allow other races, the last winner was literally a white woman.

Most cosplayers in the West are white, you think they get dms and hate mail about being gorilla niggers ruining anime or whatever? Why do you fags even care, do you want blacks at your cons?
>>
>>10762072
>Or at least a cosplay of a canonically female character I guess since crossplay is a thing.
So a white cosplayer could enter the black cosplay contest so long as they're wearing blackface?
>>
>>10762329
>It's not like they don't allow other races, the last winner was literally a white woman.
The entire thread is bitching because this year they changed it, and the contest is really only for black cosplayers.
It's the only award with a real prize.
>>
>>10762024
If you're not attending this con, why is it in your head rent free?
>>
I hardly see any good black cosplayers. They never put as much work into their stuff as non blacks. When's the last time youve seen a black cosplayer make a full tailored set by themselves? Or their own foam armor?
>>
>>10762329
>A lot of people hate blacks.
No one at conventions hate blacks. Just the annoying race baiting ones. Who knew being an insufferable person constantly complaining about black rights will make you not fun to be around.
