>You Preregistered?
Yes.
>You saving up for the con?
Obviously
>How’s your AX fund jar doing so far and what’s your budget?
Good, i’d say 1200-1500 if nothing gets in the way
>You got your work PTO approved?
Quitting 2 weeks before AX, job went to shit anyway and potentially have something lined up when I come back
>Any setbacks so far until the con?
Job went to shit. Family emergency visit I have to do before con
>Cosplay Day 0/1/2/3 plans?
Mostly casual.
>What concerts do you wanna see at AX this year?
Liella / Nijigasaki concert. Hiroyuki Sawano. I doubt it’s gonna happen due to people being people but a man can dream, can he?
>What are your dream guests?
The trash taste bois, everything else is just a bonus.
>What’s the first thing you’re doing at AX after going through a two year timeskip?
Cherishing every moment that I can, good or bad, since this’ll be my last AX until I get situated at a new job and go from there

I'm on leave
>Any setbacks so far until the con?
Not committed yet (no tickets or lodging booked)
>Cosplay Day 0/1/2/3 plans?
A puffy maid dress made from scratch
>What concerts do you wanna see at AX this year?
Love Live. It's not them who I want to see but their crazy fans.
>What are your dream guests?
Any JP light novel guest. Perhaps the author of 86.
>What’s the first thing you’re doing at AX after going through a two year timeskip?
Find friends and eat good food with them

You must be new here. They ALWAYS announce guests at the last minute.

Pre-cucked by COVID, Anime Expo announced ZUN, the creator of Touhou, a few days before con.

We’d be lucky at best if the Trash Taste podcast end up being the very last guests of honor announced a day before con
>>

Yes, if you do the proper outfit. Even DW fans would recognise you as a bonus. If you can find an EIKO to pair up with you'd definitely be recognised.

AX has been doing random ass cosplay guests for years now. They usually intersperse it with actual guests people might care about though.

>>
>>10760068
Because seeing them lose their minds debating over food and nearly ruin their friendship like they’re playing a game of Mario party makes for some good ass content. Everything else outside of food and anime can be pretty boring depending on the topic. Their jojo animator episode was sort of a snooze fest
>>
>>10760045
wouldn't they just do both at the same time? if anything the vax step is faster than the security step. although matching faces in makeup to photo IDs would be hilarious. they probably won't even bother with that part.

If this news gets out to the anime industry in Japan, AX isn't getting anyone noteworthy out of there this year besides Shit Taste.

the japanese were already hesistant to come because america is muh covid wasteland. the japanese are incredibly cautious and if they could they would stay locked up forever from the world.

So pretty much a TBBT type nerd. You watch something about nerds and think it makes you smart. Which is how New Trek works.
>>
>>10760048
Because he acts like a intellectual when it comes to anime. All the anime youtubers talk about anime as an art form but it is so surface level that it isn't even insightful. You have other youtubers who talk about movies and TV shows and they actually put in some effort to explain ideas, scenes or the production of a show. With anime youtubers they just find some season show and talk about how it is great or bad by focusing on one thing and act like they are the smartest person.
>>
>>10760060
I think you mean basic.
>>
>>10760219
The good news is there is one. The bad news is, it’s Mother’s Basement whenever he analyzes an anime opening
>>
>>10760231
> it’s Mother’s Basement whenever he analyzes an anime opening
That is what I mean by acting like an intellectual. He watches an anime and the looks for things in the opening that are in the show and then explains how the opening foreshadowed stuff in the show.

If was actually good at it then he would watch the opening of the first episode and before the second episode came out he would have a video explaining what was going to happen in the show. In the end MB is a hack who is probably one of the worst if not the worst anime youtuber.

>>10760276
I wonder if they'll have anything of substance. Shanghai is still under a lockdown (with hall passes given out to green households LMAO) so I doubt MiHoYo is going to ship their merchandise and wares or human devs.
>>
>>10760324
A "business trip" to somewhere with no restrictions and where no one gives a fuck sounds good, actually. In fact, make it a summer trip and hit up the big American conventions for a couple of months. If you had the option, would you do that or stay locked up in Shanghai where you can't even walk outside?
>>
>>10760327
>locked up
You don't seem to understand that nobody goes out, nobody comes in during a lockdown. Shanghailanders cannot even leave their apartment complexes beyond using the hall pass to buy essentials and groceries right now. They don't have the option to leave Shanghai and China has made the process of getting back in incredibly tedious and lengthy (14+7+7 days of quarantine in government facility + home) that it's not worth the lost wages for most people.
>>
>>10760327
If I had the option, I would stay in Shanghai.
I prefer China's COVID policies over US's.
I would be with my upper-middle-class family, so food and money wouldn't be an issue.
>>
>>10760355
I'm sure they can grease the proper party palms in order to be allowed out of the country. Go on your business trip and come back when restrictions lift. They can do a lot of things remotely in the meantime.

>>10760356
>upper middle class
lucky for you then. I assume your family has a sizeable home. Being stuck at home in a small apartment would not be fun after a while. I also assume that your family actually has food stocks whereas others during the lockdown have had to demend on government food deliveries, which don't always arrive.

thatsthejoke. There probably won't be any good guests this year. I will say that OffKai Expo had no problems with streaming people from their homes, minus a slight problem with lag from a couple being from across the globe. The Australian had a good 15 second delay between hearing/response.

I'm actually surprised at how little technical difficulties they had overall.

There are WNBA games that weekend, other events taking over both the Microsoft Theater and the NOVO. Any concerts will take place in the main events hall.

>>10760608
I doubt they get anyone worth justifying renting out the MS theater or Novo. It's best to just have everything at the convention center. Word coming out from AX is that they are not using the JW Marriott ballrooms for panels and other events this year.
>>
>>10760642
Then why say there was events taking over the novo? Like I don't expect ax to use it but don't say something is already booking the dates when nothing is
>>
This will be my first year at AX, I've never even been to California let alone LA

Does anyone have any tips for a first timer? Food recommendations? Any warnings?
>>
>>10760856
Don't take a bag inside if you want to get in quicker
Food trucks opposite the con centre are the best quality for the price, food inside is way too expensive and the hot dog carts roaming around will murder your stomach
Look at what panel rooms are clear/non-clear, if there's a panel you want to see which is in a non-clear room you should plan to get in 2-3 panels before for the big ones (World premieres, JoJo etc.) and sit through
>>
>>10760856
>Does anyone have any tips for a first timer? Food recommendations? Any warnings?

Yes, don't go. The guest list is a bunch of random cosplayers or youtubers who say they are anime fans but don't talk about anime.

You are going to LA, someone can rob you, assault you in that city and no one is going to help you. That isn't a joke, the police won't even bother to help.

Save your money and either go when they actually can put on a good con or go to a con somewhere else.
>>
>>10760856
>LA food
The Original Pantry Cafe is mid, Curry house is kill, Astro doughnuts is kill and Okamoto Kitchen is shit. Why bother?
>>
>>10760870
AX is a bucket list con at best. Every weeb deserves to go to Nippon ComicCon before they die.
>>
>>10760856
It's hot

Be ready for lines, hours of lining up in the heat and for your events/panels, your favorite vendors and booths

It's crowded, shoulder-to-shoulder traffic in the con

If you want to see cosplay representation from some obscure anime, you'll see it there

At the end you'll realize you had some fun, but also overpaid to spend 50% of the time in a line for a lot of nothing
>>
>>10760856
California usually has beautiful weather, but AX falls on the hottest week of the year every year. And like other anons said, you're going to spend hours of your time under that hot July sun. Don't think you're better than sun protection. Sunscreen, face towel, plenty of water (bring your own so you don't have to pay $4 a bottle), hat and sunglasses.
>>
>Mask mandate and vaccine verification are now official at AX
Let's see how many dumbasses drop out because of this.
>>
>>10760856
There is good food in LA, but not in the immediate vicinity of LACC.
Recommended to take one of the shuttles or uber to Little Tokyo a few miles away for better and far cheaper weeb food than the trucks offer.
Don't eat those fucking street hot dogs unless you want to spend the rest of the con in the bathroom.
Also there won't be too many in the con bubble, but downtown is full of schizo vagrants so be aware of your surroundings and be careful not to step in poop if you try to walk over to the Ralphs and that general area.

eat the danger dogs and street tacos, dont bother with the trucks. little tokyo os so packed during AX its pointless to bother. make use of the blue and orange lines, you can easily get somewhere else fast and eat food then head back. pay attention to your surroundings, crime in LA was always bad but its shot up and the new meth the homeless are on makes them nuts.
>>
>>10761165
Trucks are fine, although overpriced for the event. You do get the convenience of having them all in the same area where normally they're spread around the county. Danger dogs are just for the novelty. Tbh I would pass, they're nothing special. Tacos are OK but there are good tacos all over the place in LA if you have transport.

Don't forget blackouts. CA doesn't have enough power plants to power the state so they are already telling people to expect blackouts this summer. So if you are going to AX be ready to be in 100 degree heat outside and 100 inside because there is no power.

Y'know I was put off by that hard message at the start, that for this year's AX, they are offering no refunds or transfers to next year, what you get is what you get regardless of show quality or format. They can even move it online and still claim they delivered a show.

This con must be a joke at this point.

Guests
>Mika Akitaka only actual anime guest
>Youtubers who don't talk about anime anymore
>Yaya Han only real cosplayer
>A bunch of random cosplayers

They are holding the con in July where it is going to be over 100 degrees, in LA a city with a massive homelessness, drug and crime problems. The convention center will be cleared out but once you leave that bubble then you are on your own.

You can't get refunds once you buy your tickets either. So what is the point of going to this? I mean even if you live in LA it doesn't seem worth it.
>>
>>10761416
im just going for artist alley buys desu
>>
>>10761416
4th of July weekend is a good time for me to take leave. I'm from LA so it's a good time to see friends/family, go to the expo, and catch a Dodger game. But yeah I definitely wouldn't see the appeal of going if the con doesn't have anything good, anything you want, or if you aren't used to being in LA. I miss the old military discount though, it was wayyyy cheaper last time.

To clarify I'd just buy a 4-day badge now but I am only interested in LL and would just buy a one day badge for the concert.

You should be fine for two reasons :
1) AX shouldn't sell out this year because it's a shit lineup
2) the chances of love live are very low. Japan is risk adverse so Bushiroad and company are not going to send them to our covid hell scape (as stereotyped by the whole world)

>>
>>10761611
I see, so AX is broke.

AX has always been in debt on Day 1 of a con, when their accounts are charged for the venue and gigs, and they have to immediately start selling passes to next year to stay afloat. I wonder if they be forced to dissolve if they don't hit some financial goal for 2022.
>>

I really doubt it. They had to run at a deficit for multiple years from 2010 onwards after Lattanzio.

No, she was never a real cosplayer in the first place. She would either have her outfits made by other people or put on a bikini and a wig and say she was cosplaying a character.

At this point she is just doing OF because she can use all the makeup and filters she needs to hide the fact she is past her prime. Yaya is older than Nigri but at least Yaya is a cosplayer who has always made amazing outfits while also doing some fan service.

I saw this and just went… who is this? She apparently was on the winning team for WCS a few years back but nothing else I saw on her page looks very impressive. Not sure how I feel about her being a judge since I’m competing in the masquerade.

Speaking of, has anyone here competed in the masquerade before? I’m mainly doing it for craftsmanship since it’s just me so I know I really only have a chance for best craftsmanship award. I know Yaya knows her shit, no idea about this girl and other judges haven’t been announced yet. I hope it’s someone like Jhart.

>>
>>10762395
Thanks anon! I have a 25 page book of pictures since my costume took 5 months and was a ton of work. I’m hoping it’s good enough to have a fighting chance, it’s the best thing I’ve ever made and the best craftsmanship I’ve ever done, but it’s a ballgown and I know needlework tends to be looked down upon compared to armor work. So I’m really hoping there’s at least one other judge with high level needlework knowledge (Yaya knows a lot, so at least there’s that). I’ve never competed at AX or really any anime convention this big so I’m not sure how the masters competition usually looks.

Well, it looks like they have really nice foam work at least. Are they the ones who did the Street Fighter skit?
Why is AX paying to fly in all these foreign cosplayers to be judged? Yes, these guys (I think they’re both guys) and the Indonesian girl have done WCS but I find that a lot of WCS costumes don’t have the best craftsmanship in favor of being flashy, so I’m not sure how I feel about it. Why not get US people with high level craftsmanship besides Yaya? How many judges are there usually?

Will the foreign judges even be fluent enough in English to understand detailed technique descriptions?
>>
>>10762734
I agree, most foreign cosplayers abuse the shit out of filters and makeup (even moreso than domestic ones somehow) and they don't even look like the same people irl. I've crossed paths with some of them in public and legit didn't know who they were until they told me.
>>
>>10762115
She burned her bridges with AX a long time ago, was a headline guest at the peak of her popularity and didn't show up to the con. I was staff that year and it was a massive shitshow for the people involved, they even had to pull signs down and stuff.

It would take more research. Is the badge's state held on the badge and can it be modified? Or is there some sort of central thing that records the tapped in/out status of a given number's state? If it's the former and it's local then yes it would be useful. You could clone a bunch of valid badges and they would have independent states if the state is just modified every time to you tap in/out by whatever machine you tap at. If it's the latter then that would be less useful because you wouldn't be able to have multiple people use the same badge numbers since they'd all share the same state (ex person 1 tags in, number is now marked as in, so anyone else trying to tag in would have an error). Unless people were able to run up to an out machine and tag that so they can return to being "out"
>>
>>10762979
I saw this and I really don’t understand how this shit works. It says you still have access to everything so what’s the point of the groups?
I doubt anyone is going to go to this thing over AX unless they go for a day to see their favorite VA or something but that’s also not super likely since it’s usually kids who like English VA’s and they might not have the money for 2 cons.
Whomever planned this is supremely stupid and should never be allowed to plan anything again.
>>
>>10763107
>AVOX draws all the kids away
>less crowding at AX
>no English VAs around

I jest, of course. It's meant as a way for the english VAs to get more money because they didn't want to give AX a cut. They also didn't like how AX wasn't sucking their proverbial dicks.

I'm surprised there's so many people here who enjoy Trash Taste. I guess 4chan really has changed from the last time I regularly browsed if there are people defending content creators that only 15 year old redditors enjoy.

Anyways, this is my first AX but I'm gonna be helping out with my cousin's booth so I get a free badge, paid for my time, and no lines to get inside the con center. I'm mostly going so I can cross it off my list of cons I have never been to and hang out with friends in the evening. At the end of the day it seems like AX is a shitshow no matter what, so I'm going to go experience the shitshow in the least troublesome way I can aside from having to buy a $500 badge.

Also I think it's fairly obvious they're going to get Hololive and/or Demondice. Demondice is friends with the Trash Taste dudes and has already been doing a bunch of con performances so I would be more surprised if she didn't go.
>>
>>10763393
There are two Japanese non-AX concerts I'm going to during day 0 and day 1. One might be announced later for AX because they definitely related and their company is at AX but it'd be weird to have them do an outside show and then an AX show.
>>
>>10763421
Demondice is one of said concerts and is happening on June 30th at 1720, which is a couple of miles from the LACC. Not sure if they'll do Mori at AX.

You have the best badge for buying stuff as you can get into the exhibit hall early. Some vendors don't sell to exhibitors (since they know you can get in early) but most won't care. Where the Premier badge is better is if there are panels or a premiere you want to see since you can skip the line. Both do allow you into the convention center easily which is a godsend. It's a lot less shit show when you can skip lines. Like night and day.

That’s definitely excessive (I’ve never spent anywhere close to that on merch at any con) but if they’re traveling or coming from out of town the cost of food, parking/Uber/whatever, etc can add up and everything costs more in LA so it’s not a bad idea to save up extra cash just in case. Also some people blow a lot on booze for their room parties (I’ve seen them in line at Ralphs).

Old fogey here. What do the kids use nowadays? Insta? Twitters? snapchat? Tikkin and a tokkin? I've always been behind the times.

As far as the photog question goes, the one thing Facebook is good for is having general posts in a group instead of needing to know the right tag to use. Photogs posting their ad works with that.
>>
Is it worth going to the con by myself just for announcements or should I just pass?
>>
>>10763858
>just for announcements
Fuck no. There's literally nothing that will be announced at a convention that won't find its way through every single nerd journalism website within the hour of announcement that will make the con itself a necessity. Even if it's extremely niche, it will show up within those niche communities. The only thing you'll miss are moments of hype and excitement during the length of the announcement, and then after that passes, you're spending entire days with nothing to do. Go to a con if you have more plans than just that.

I don't buy merch unless it's a holy grail type item, this year I'm just budgeting for food
>>
Ok femgulls, I will pay you to spend a night with me in my hotel room
>>
>>10763899
So what do we do in said room?
>>
>>10763853
To find photographers, anon (if that's not you) is correct in that Facebook and soooomewhat instagram is best. I'm just complaining because I hate having to log in to that godforsaken website. The youngins do be using all the social media you mentioned for everything else tho
>>
>>10763846
never buy from dealers hall unless its exclusive. I spend a good $500+ on artist alley though. love pins, getting commission sketches, random cute drawings and such.
>>
>>10763754
what cosplay are you planning? If they're characters I like I may shoot for free
>>
How’s the 21+ lounge?
>>
You activated your badge yet?
>>
>>10763920
Would you shoot My Dress-Up darling or Spy Family?
>>
Is cell service in the convention center any good? I imagine it would shit itself with the number of attendees but AnimeNYC did all right.
>>
>>10763987
No. UPS fucked my delivery. I'm probably gonna have to pick up a replacement badge at the con thanks to those fags.
>>
>>10763992
As a matter of fact, yes to both. Guessing Marin and Yor?

Do you have an insta?
>>
>>10763790
thanks nonny, any recs for groups? I'm not much of a facebook user at all.

>>10763920
All of my cosplays are from idol games, mostly bandori. very understandable if that's not your style.
>>
>>10764049
Not the anon, but I'm heartened to hear that you would shoot these series. I hope I can run into you another year at AX.
>>
>>10764121
Anime Expo Fans which is a general AX group, but you'll get photographers posting too
Cosplayers & Photographers for specifically photography stuff, but spread around all the conventions

I can only really say "maybe" since I got out of playing idol games. Used to play LL a lot, and I sucked at Bandori, but I'll still watch the Bandori concerts. Depending on time/schedule constraints I might be able to give you a few photos. Not sure I'd be the best person for the job though (ironically I do a lot of live music photography)

>>10764136
I know they're flavor of the month but I happen to like those flavors of the month, and have liked them since before they even became flavor of the month.
>>
>On this day 3 years ago, Aqours was announced for their 2 day concert at AX
>Still no new Japanese guests have been announced
Dead con is dead?
>>
>>10763961
It sucks. You're better off getting drunk in your hotel room with a few of poorfag friends.

Who wants some overpriced beer?
>>
>>10764245
Is it good beer though at least?
>>
>>10764285
It's convenient in that you don't have to go elsewhere, but it's no better than beer you can get at the store. Also costs more than the beer from the store, but that's generally the case with anything that is served to you.

>>10763846

Same. I import figs so my budget is all Artist Alley
>>
I swear if buttfuckers spread monkeypox and AX is canned im going to lose it.
>>
>>10764437
It won't be canned. Just restrictions like masks and vaccines

Another shoddily made documentary about cosplay and possibly the anime community.

>Money that would have been used for big name Japanese guests are now being wasted on local literal who MacBook DJs
>>
>>10764613
All those MacBook DJs and nobody cosplayers combined probably cost less than flying over one guest from Japan.
>>
>>10764621
Those MacBook DJs and nobody cosplayers are more suited to being guest at local smaller conventions and not at "North America's Largest Anime Convention".

The problem isn't money. It's Japan not wanting to risk their talent. That's what my contacts are telling me. You'll notice that pretty much all conventions are light on Japanese guests. AX is no exception, biggest anime con in America or not.
>>
>>10764686
I think it's money too though, AX didn't have any revenue coming in the last two years, and this year they're probably selling a lot less badges than previous years. They're likely not going to blow whatever budget they have on a big name guest when they're going to have lower attendance no matter what.
>>
>>10764692
While you're probably right in that they don't want to waste money on a big name, I don't think they're out of money in general. They have built a decent reserve of money over the past few years and the bulk of their expenditures is the venue and guests. Not having to pay for that for two years meant they didn't have a big burn rate on the reserve.

Korea is risking their talent and they’re doing alright
>>
>>10764700
Japan has been notoriously risk-adverse the entire pandemic. They walled off the country to almost everyone that wasn't a Japanese citizen for more than two years combined. Even permanent residents/spouses were at risk of being shut out of the country.
There were small windows for people to get into the country but those were soon closed after. Only this year did they start letting other people back into the country, and only students/teachers/business people at that. They still haven't opened up completely. They're doing a test pilot of 50 foreigners on a set tour later this year. Those tourists can't roam freely and are only able to go to the tour destinations. Any further openings beyond 50 will likewise be stuck going onto to approved set destinations.

Meanwhile, Korea opened up fully in April. Two different cultures.
