How old is too old to go to an anime convention?
I just turned 29 and finally have enough money to go to one.

If you saw this thread get deleted in /a/, yeah that was me. Yes I know im dumb af
>>
>How old is too old to
Whatever follows that is irrelevant because the answer is always the same: When you're dead. Simple as that. Twenty nine is admittedly a little old to start...at first glance. Show up to a decent sized event (I'm assuming you want AX?) and you will quickly find literal grandmas and grandpas alike starting out at over 60. Grandmas and grandpas who did NOT come to be there with their children or grandchildren.
>>
>>10758713
If you're still attending anime c9ns into your 30s, you need stop and think about your fuck ups.
>>
Most people I know usually move into more of a staffing position as they get older, rather than just attending - but that's more due to interests and where their peers are more than anything else. (PROTIP: it ain't the 18 year olds running most of the cons.)
>>
I’m in my 30’s and go to conventions, as do many of my similarly aged friends. It’s nice being able to afford things and not have to cram 8 people in a hotel room.
Most of us are cosplayers though.
>>
>>10758729
This is why I still go in my late 20's. I can afford to buy stuff in the artist alley and go to the nice restaurants in the area with my friends.
Fuck hotel stuffing.
>>
Too old is honestly when you're dead. I got dudes who went to the first AX still going. Like others have said, the older you are, the more money you make, and the more you can go to. Fly for a concert? Go to another country for an event? No problem!
>>
>>10758713
If anything you can go to con's you want to go to. Instead of being stuck going to a crappy con that is close by you can travel to one that you really want to go to.

Besides I've seen people who are over 60 at con's just to be there.
>>
when youre 6 ft under

whew projecting
>>
Never too old, but i think there are activities you should refrain from doing in the con as time goes by
>>
Just stick with your own age group and you'll be fine. Only children care about being "too old" for hobbies.
>>
>>10758874
this 100%

I've seen people in their 70s at anime cons and in some cases they were killing it in cosplay
>>

men who want to flirt with barely legals do too.

The moment you turn 18, you are too old. Pick up a real hobby like basketball, tennis, or rock climbing.

There will always be oldies vendors, panels, groups in anime cons like the people who discuss stuff like Tatsunoko, Astro Boy , GITS today

Eventually it will happen to homies who grew up on the original Eva, Rurouni kenshin, CCs

youre never to old. just dont be fucking creepy and people wont care.
im in my 30s now and my coworker is in his 50s and we still go to anime cons like AX still. he still watches a lot of modern anime because he thinks they are still pretty neat.
the only cons we dont go to are the smaller ones like ALA. those are more like anime social gatherings than an actual con.
>>
>>10758713

more to do with why you go.
>>
>>10758713
Dude in his 70's goes to a local anime con as Inuyasha every year I've gone so.

I'm sure there are plenty of veterans that still go to them.

I know this is a bait thread but who fucking cares, anon. As long as you aren't going to fandom meetups/photoshoots with 17 year old zoomers and just hang with people your age like >>10758874 said. You could be well into your 40s and if youre just around other 30/40 year olds, it doesn't matter.
Anyone trying to tell you that you can't go to a con in your 30s to hang with your friends and drink in your hotel room in cosplay is someone who probably doesn't have friends to begin with. A young NEETling getting pissy about nonsense, probably
>t. Going on 30, still hitting up cons just to hang with friends in cos and raid the artist alley
>>
>>10762717
Closer to about 40 years. Early 80's is when the first anime-specific cons (rather than sci-fi cons with anime tracks) began appearing.

When I started attending cons 20 years ago, the majority of attendees were over the age of 18, with a lot of people in their 30's and 40's.

I'm 40 now, and I don't have any issue meeting new people at cons in my age bracket. I don't feel out of place. I still attend cons for fun, but I mainly staff or sell in artist alley.

That said, there are a lot more teenagers than when I began attending. But back then, fandom, cosplay, conventions themselves weren't as well-known or commonplace.
>>
>>10758713
Dude it's your money just enjoy what you enjoy, don't hurt anyone, and stay within reason. The point of anime conventions is to socialize fans of anime so if you like anime go.

My mom goes to comic conventions and she's 54.

lol. zoomer
>>
>>10758713
Best part about going to cons over 30 is having disposable income with your career to do what the fuck you want at a con. I do not miss the days of room stuffing with 8 other congoers and being on a super tight budget. That shit was tolerable in 2007 when you were a wide eyed teen or college student with anime hype flowing through your veins. Now? Not worrying about how much a room costs and having that room BY YOURSELF is the best for your peace of mind and to wind down. Having a nice sit down meal instead of a bowl of coffeepot ramen does wonders for you as well.

It gets better the older you get if you have your shit together.

just have fun, who cares. there's older people there all the time. as other anons said, it gets better as you get older and get your shit together, no more sleeping on rando's hotel room floors.

>18 is still a groomer
I agree, women are incapable of decision making and should be sold by their fathers. praise allah!
>>
My first anime con was A-kon in 1996. There were less than a thousand people there and most of them were older men in probably their late 20s or early 30s. As anime and comics became more mainstream it drew in a younger audience but the entire scene was built by older people.
>>
i'm 34, married to another 34 year old, and we cosplay together. ive been going to cons since i was 14 and i don't think it's going to stop anytime soon.
thought it will take a back seat to war reenacting since i find that to be more fun and less homo shit shoved in my face at every turn.
>>

What is it with zoomers and their obsession with grooming?
>>
>>10763453
Blame it on the Me Too movement.

I feel bad for anyone who's getting into cons today with how much prices have spiked.
Only reason you'd have your own room is if you want to hold a room party or a place to fuck.

agreed
most girls i know fucked guys much older than them when they were still under 18 and they dont regret it. it's the old hags that have a problem with it and somehow brainwashed men into also having a problem with it.
considering i can go out on any given day (especially with summer around the corner) and see a 12 year old girl's ass hanging out of her shorts and little tits in a low crop shirt, while she's out with her family, makes the whole age of consent thing really messed up.

im in my 50s and "dress" as a ugly bastard to hook up with the daddy issue girls.
god bless anime for making girls get fat ugly fuck fetishes. ill never run out of 18-22 poontang now.

27 here,
in my experience (or at least the social circles I've encountered) generally the prime age for con-hopping is mid to late 20s through early 30s, I guess because it is still relatively young and people have disposable incomes without children
>>
>>10758713
Past 27 you are:
>too old for hotel room parties
>too old for hookups
And that's it

Everything else is free game, and the former doesn't even apply if you go with friends who throw a party for fellow boomers

it's both me too and the feminine teaching that has taught men that it's wrong to go after younger girls and thats it right to go after milfs and cougars (which all come with their own set of problems). I try to tell guys whenever I can to ignore people calling you a groomer. Girls seethe when they see me at 30 with 18 year olds. And thats out of jealously. There's nothing moral about their reaction
>>
>>10758874
This is the difficulty. I want to socialize because it's hard to find people into anime in the wild sometimes but most con goers tend to skew younger so it kinda limits you as you age.
>>
>>10758713
you're never too old to have fun man. Fuck what other people say and go out there and have fun and do what makes you happy. When you're old and senile you'll look back and regret not doing soemthing you were passionate about because "other people may think im too old". You're never too old to be happy. Now go out there and have fun man.
>>
>>10758720

I'm 28, married with a kid, have a decent job, etc.
I went to one in college but didn't dress up and haven't been since. Now that I can actually afford nice things, I'm considering going to one and actually trying to dress up.

Am I too old now? How weird would it be to go alone? I live in a city with my wife and kid away from anyone I know that would possibly be into this.
>>
On another note, how the fuck do you guys find people to go with? Like as a working adult out of college, how would I find a friend that would want to go to this?
>>
>>10758865
Thank god I'm 6'2
>>
>>10770537
Not be an asocial retard who has a group of friends who have similar interests. Or join the billion cosplay social media groups and talk there. Or make friends at the con.
>>
>>10770536
Not weird at all. Focus on you and having fun. That's the point. Worrying about being too old is a disservice to yourself. 28 is still young. I'm pushing 40 and have no plans to stop.

Bigger hurdle is the wife because you're going to an anime con with all those young girls around and people get jealous and shit like that.
>>
>>10770674
>Bigger hurdle is the wife because you're going to an anime con with all those young girls around and people get jealous and shit like that.
Mad jealous. Girls love hanging out with me and talking. Any girl that Im fucking casually sees this as a major threat and will not shut up about it. I try to keep as much as my interaction of different women as far apart as possible. And if it's not possible due to social media pictures I just get the women who don't mind knowing Im attractive. And they still get jealous. You cant fix it.
>>
>>10758713
youll get some college kids and teenagers (redundant, really) who MIGHT try to police you but they're few and far between and it's also harassment by most con rules. ive heard horror stories but a lot of it boils down to shitty kids and mankids whining on tumblr or twitter

in fact most con staff tend to be older - i was one of the youngest people when worldcon came to my city

if youre concerned about being old and go to cons, comic cons and sci-fi cons tend to trend older and are way less judge-y. in fact, some of the sci-fi cons here are staffed by people who felt like they got too old for the big cons in the area
>>
>>10770680
Had too many friends basically vanish as soon as they get married. Feels sad man. No more cons. No more parties or get togethers.
>>
Stopped going at 27 cause I got too fat to get invited to drink.
30 now and lost enough weight to get back into it.
Skipping cons with mask mandated tho so it might be awhile yet.
>>
>>10758713
I am literally SO SICK of this thread topic. No you are never too old to go to fan convention just don't be a fucking creeper incel thats trying to hang out with underage people you don't know.
>>
>>10770537
as an actual autist who suffers because our local big con is a party con, meeting other solo-dudes is alright

if you can convince any normie friends to go thats even better

otherwise: dont interrupt, only talk to groups if they approach you. worst comes to worst, using discord or irc to keep in touch with your internet friends to keep you company is alright
>>
>>10770783
fuck 'em, keep goin'. friends change all the time. try staffing (at the less drama-free ones, at least) and meet new friends. i notice a lot of staffers tend to be married
>>
The con experience hit different when you got a 6 figure salary and ample time off.
>>
>>10771471
ngl ive been starting to plan my stupid teenage/college dream of going to a lot of the big cons now because of this. it'll probably be exhausting but you only live once

Based. I'm trying to lose weight now but it's a very long way to go. I hope I get down to a reasonable weight before I go bald, I want girls to be into me.

12 year old girls do that because they want to be like adults. Not because they want to entice crusty old pedos.

Hate to tell you, but you're a little behind in whats 'old.'

Its now further back from today to the airdate of Bleach (2004), than it was from Bleach to airdate of Eva (1995).

its changing the dealers room and panels because of digital media. the nature of merch is changed because of it, too.
>>
>>10772526
Why in God's name would you even buy a gold pass? That's like buying a Winrar license key.
>>
>>10770896
>otherwise: dont interrupt, only talk to groups if they approach you.
So cons are pretty much a social gathering of asocial people. Got it.
>>
>>10772774
More like, you're responding to someone who's incredibly standoffish and maybe even contentious. Small or medium sized events are extremely sociable places, regardless of group size
>>
>>10772774
Pretty much. A lot of big of mid-sized cons are like this. I’ve overheard some real cringe interactions and people straight out ignoring people trying to talk to them - but at sci-fi or small comic-cons I’ve seen people make friends with creators or approach others out of the blue
>>

>>
>>10772774
Yes but there's various types of asocial people. The modern young people suck at socializing. Whereas the old guard at least came from an era where they were raised enough to be socially calibrated. So they may be nerds, but they are social and sensible. Today's youth seems off.
