If the wig is crusty, over teased, or never once been combed, post em here!
The crunchier the wig, the better

Danganronpa cosplayers are the worse, I’ve seen them with paper wigs and wigs full of chunky glitter that just looks like dandruff.
>>

I see that a lot with jjba cosplayers too unfortunately

Shit looks fried, plus it was made for momokun
>>
>>
>>10478567
Ok this is just stupid. The wig looks great.
>>
>>10478575

The wig itself is cute but it doesn't even look like the reference image. It's spiky when Isabel has soft round fluffy hair. If it's for momokun tho it's irrelevant cobsidering she just uses a wig and a bikini for her patreon costhot pics right?
>>
>>
Question about the legality of wig ownership...
>>
>>10478601
...if you own a wig with pigtails...
>>
>>10478602
...is it illegal to also own a comb?
>>
Pictures like these are why I'm really nervous about getting into wigs in cosplay.
>>
>>10478667
It's not that you can never mess up, that happens to all of us. But even if you mess up, there are things you can do to mitigate the damage... like at least combing out the knots on half of these. Take your time and go slow and follow tutorials and get advice. Practice on some old wigs first to get an idea of how the fibers work. You'll do fine.
>>
More DR unfortunately.
>>
>>10478686
what is that
>>
>>10478785
I....I think it’s suppose to Ibuki Mioda from Danganronpa
>>
>>10478667
The fact that you can recognize that these wigs look bad means you’ll be fine. No one just starts out automatically knowing how to style a wig nicely, it takes time and practice.

The thing that these people don’t seem to realize is that just because you make a wig, doesn’t mean you have to wear it. The first wig I cut was ugly as hell. Wore it once, saw photos of it, had enough self-awareness to realize it looked awful, and then I chucked the wig. See? We all fuck up at some point. There’s nothing wrong with admitting something you made is ugly and throwing it away. You don’t have to show off something that looks bad on the internet just so you have some new content to post on social media

I will never understand this love and jumping on the deep fried extra glued stiffy wig trend.
Back then wigs were dead and shiny as a greasy rat, now every diva takes it to the other extremity and it's considered "professional level".

>doesn't look good either in photos in any lighting or in person
>smells like chernobyl radioactive imminent death site

>>
>>10479321
holy shit do I hate glued hairlines
>>
>>10479329
Same. It never looks good. I also don’t love the crimped shit because honestly it just feels like cheating. The skill is in putting volume into a wig without it being painfully obvious. Anyone can crimp the shit out of the fibers. It’s okay from far away but looks like ass up close imo.
>>
>>10479300
I mean it comes across more as foam than hair but I’d rather see clean shapes than a frizzy messy that would likely be the alternative.
>>
>>10479339
I don’t have a problem with crimping. The real issue is that people are crimping every layer of hair. You’re supposed to just crimp the middle parts to get the proper shape, then cover the crimped parts with the outer layers that are still smooth
>>
>>10479430
THIS. God I could scream this to the heavens. All of the problems in this thread could be solved if beginner stylists just sectioned out the hair so that there's a clean untouched layer on that sits over the rat nest instead of trying to """"trust the process""""" and beat the ever loving shit out of the wig by making it extra crispy

Different anon, but I also hate this fried fiber trend Umbran started, and we're seeing more and more of it. Hell even one of the Arda finalists crimps her hair to hell and back. It's a bad, lazy look when you've turned your wig into a cartoony fro. Why do these stylists not bother covering the frizz with more hair or just crimping less?
>>
>>10479079
How is it a vendetta post when it’s one post and not even showing her name? Retard.
>>10479713
Exactly this. It looks so gross in pictures.
>>
>>10478567
kind of sad that the stylist did not played more with layer and different definition of crimping, especially if the character is supposed to be a dog. I feel like a lot of the stylist who use crimping forget to document or observe hair styling outside of the cosplay and drag scene, it could be cool, especially if it's for photoshoot with less harsh situation for the wig.
>>

>>
>>10478561
I mean it's closer to what that bitch's hair looks like compared to OP at least.
>>
>>10479295
I understand that they're trying to match the source material exactly but I always preferred when the wig tries to accomplish the hairstyle that the anime is trying to convey instead of a 1-to-1. Like in your pick, instead of doing that make it look like natural hair with curly tips and 2 layers. And in >>10479300 make it look more like a real lions mane.
>>
>>10480391
Yeah I feel like the huge bangs just look really bad on people because it makes their head/face look super small. I think people just need to make the wig proportions to their head sizes instead of anime head sizes. Really hope this trend ends soon
>>
>>10479948
It's not remotely close to good work. Good work would be creating that volume and shape without leaving the wig looking like a frizzy halloween clown. How can anyone look at the texture in that zoomed in shot and think this looks fine? This is no different from plopping a "wig" made out of yarn or foam on your head.
>>
Ok I can respect the effort put into a wig, but I really don’t understand this styling trend that’s gotten HUGE. like,,,, trying to make a wig look so close to the original anime that it stops looking like hair. Kind of reminds me of those gimmick “Wigs” made out of foam ppl had as a joke.
>>
>>10480261
If I had gotten that wig I wouldn't be here...the underside is a mess of hot glue too
>>
>>10480531
Jesus why the fuck would they need to apply any hot glue on that
>>
>>10480491
I think it's because they're trying to mimic the big, teased wigs that some good stylists have made, but they're being lazy and just crimping the hell out of the entire wig to create that volume. IIRC Umbranwitch started the crimping trend. Most good stylists tease instead of using a crimper. Heehee is the first person I can think of who made wigs like this by teasing. The texture's a little rough in the back but she's not frying the hell out of the fibers.
>>
>>10480604
well like others said crimping should be done on just the inner layers.
>>
>>10480540
It's how they chose to attach the wefts into place...I don't know a whole about wig making but hot glue is a night before the con panic material for me personally. The seller got a bit snooty when I mentioned the glue prevented the wig from stretching over my hair. They claimed it was my fault for not giving them the right hairline measurement, which I did.
>>
>>10480621
Yeah those wefts should have been sewn in. That’s bullshit if you paid $300. That’s not a $300 wig job. I’d fuckin return it
>>
>>10480651
I've been trying to but this seller is being really adamant that it's in no way her fault. It's flopped from USPS's fault to somehow my fault that this wig is not what was promised.
>>
>>10480688
Since you bought it through Etsy, have you tried opening a claim with them?
If that doesn’t work you can try opening a claim through PayPal or your credit card company
>>
>>10480794
I'm in the process of seeing if I can get the charge reversed through PayPal. Etsy wouldn't help me because the seller claims on their page they aren't responsible for "damage during shipping" which is what she's using to try and cover her shoddy wig job. My fiancé is getting me a wig through a different seller who's already been heaps nicer and more professional. So the story at least should end in my cosplay still happening
>>
>>10480992
Glad you've got another one in the pipeline. Shit, I sometimes use fabric glue when I'm being lazy but I'm also not selling wigs on Etsy for $300...big yikes.

I hope you can get your money back. I'm legit curious what PP would do, because they don't cover custom items. I've always wondered if items like this that are made to order (and yet not a commission) would fall under that category and they could deny buyer protection.
>>
God this thread makes me terrified to commission a wig.
>>
>>10481026
Honestly I'm not optimistic about getting my money back and it kinda leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. But at the end of the day shitty people will do shitty things and I'm just going to be a little more selective with future commissions.
>>
>>10481088
Did you leave them a review yet?
>>
>>10481088
At the very worst end of it you could try to make the charge back through your card company. PP and Etsy aren't known for usually being on the buyer's side but your bank will usually be able to do something about it if PP won't.
>>
>>10481103

I got a wig that was supposed to have bangs cut into it but instead just has a few random wispy strands hanging down at the front. >>
>>10484177
That's great! And I'm sure there is, but your experience is not universal. You don't know how much of that time they spent cosplaying was quality learning time or purchasing costumes and prestyled wigs. Time only equates experience if you are using that time to actually improve. And it sounds like you put a lot of work into your craft. If their wig looks like it does, do you honestly think they've been putting the same amount of quality time and effort?
>>
>>10484400
Nayrt but honestly that stuff doesn’t really matter. 19 is old enough to figure out how to watch a YouTube tutorial on simple wig cutting techniques
>>
>>10484476
Sure, doesn't mean that they'll be good at it or that their standards for what good looks like will be high. I mean that's fairly obvious with what they deem post-worthy.

>that stuff doesn’t really matter
A person who dedicates their time to learning will accomplish better and faster what someone who doesn't spend time improving even though they've been doing it longer. That's just a simple truth. I was saying so because the fact that they have been cosplaying for years as a minor is irrelevant. Maybe if that had been doing so as an adult with access to more tools/supplies/money it would be a different story, but you're basically working with crumbs as a minor unless you have parents with a lot of disposable income and their approval.
>>

You're trying to justify that wig's frizzy, crimped texture by saying the wigmaker chose to do that because it looks like dog hair. When in reality Umbranwitch uses that lazy texture on all her wigs like >>10484153

Clear enough?
>>
>>10484486
>adult with access to more tools/supplies/money
Literally the only thing you need to cut a wig is a pair of $7 shears and a $4 wig head. And then the patience to watch a tutorial so that you do it right. If you're too poor to afford those, maybe you shouldn't be cosplaying.
>>
>>10484685
I was thinking the same thing. I used to return cans for supply money and walk to the library to look up tutorials. A lot of cosplayers actually come from poor backgrounds.
>>
>>10484580
I'm not excusing their behavior, I've made it very clear that their work is shit. I just don't agree with the idea that doing something for a few years means you're good at it, especially after barely becoming an adult.

Not excusing the shitty tackiness but I think one big factor in all of this is wig quality.
If your wig is cheapshit and trash from the get-go you might need even more money to buy
>some synthetic fiber softener
>detangle spray
>serum
>combs
>pins
>styling products and tools
etcetera and waste all your time and effort making it presentable which is where a lot of zoomers with 0 experience go wrong.
A lot of younger poorfags seem to think "it's better to buy a cheap wig and salvage it with my household products!" when in reality it can turn out more expensive and worse than buying a premade costier one.

tl;dr it's all arda's and cosplay shops fault for overpricing their shit scam wigs lole

Their lacefronts are way too expensive but $30-$45 for a good quality nonlace wig is not overpriced. Go roll the dice with China and Amazon if you need it to be cheaper, any USA based custom import is going to cost money to manufacture. I don't understand this mentality.

>>10485715
Maybe with their longer length wigs. But their shorter ones for spiking and styling hasn’t lost its quality or thickness. And their prices are not that much different then most other places with the same weft amounts and fiber quality. The only wigs I have had issues with shedding are the ones in the discontinued and sale sections. There’s reasons they are put there. Their lace fronts are a bit over priced for the lace they use. It’s rough and scratchy but not unbareable. Five wits is like lower quality arda but are still just as nice. I am not expecting a 200-800 dollar wig quality you would get at a actual daily wear wig shop. But quality wise it’s remained the same even though they are now using a different type of fiber. It works the same as the old fiber. Just got to know how to work with wigs apparently.

The problem with all these awful overly large wigs is that they never pay attention to proportions or placement on the face
>>
>>10485875
That might be because they style them on wig heads that are usually not the same features as the wearers actual face to scale it. Also wig heads tend to be smaller in size so it looks good on the form. Then all dumb and wonky on the actual person. It’s why it’s best to get a wig block in your heads circumstance and then mark where your features are on it so you can scale it. Or have your head casted for working on if you have the ability to get that detailed.

I've definitely had this problem. It's so frustrating working on a wig and then putting it on only to feel like your work is completely off. Any recommendations to fix that?
>>
>>10485968
Read the whole thing. There’s recommendations in it.
> wig block in your heads width and mark where your features are.
> get a cast of your head to use as your wig stand for styling.
>>
>>10485968
Alternatively to buying a block or getting a lifecast done, if you're in a pinch you can pad out a wig head to match your scalp https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtMw5DnNTZM

That's helpful, thanks! Would I need to alter the face in anyway since it's a premade face or is it generally good enough for proportions?

>>10486156
The features are just there fore aesthetic and are not good guidelines. Just measure where your own are and mark them on the base. Ignore what ever is already there. Or find a wig stand without a face on it at all and mark your own. That’s literally what a wig block is just made of fabric for easy pinning.

about, god probably 5 years ago there was a bad crafts/makeup thread and this girl who claimed she was a professional prop and makeup person got posted. /cgl took to her da for the gold mine of trash she had posted. Then someone started posting her address and phone number, and that's why /cgl can't have fun hate filled drama threads over a single person any more.

Watch youtube tutorials, buy a cheap practice wig if you'd like, and just keep trying. Don't think that any attempt at doing a wig will land you on this board. We're aware that everyone starts somewhere. These posts are examples of people who either think their work is hot shit or who we can learn from -- albeit not in the kindest way. What you'll notice from a lot of these wigs is that the mistakes are intentional. Some of these people were PAID to make which is even worse. The rug wig, foam wigs, chunky glitter, poop coils -- those were posted with full belief that their work is hot shit which is why we poke fun at them. tl;dr, don't be scared.
>>
>>10500067
Don't just jump in without knowing what you're doing and you'll be fine. Watch some videos or read some good wig tutorials on how to style. There's so many excellent resources out there, there's no excuse for these kinds of wigs.

New age cosplay wig tutorials be like

>Start off with 60$ Arda wig
>Soak wig in pure fabric softener for 2 days
>Let dry but don't rinse it
>Place on foam head
>Back comb it to hell and destroy it
>Aight now brush it out and coat it in lubricant to get out the tangles
>Melt and burn it with a crimper
>Cut off chunks so you can glue it to the scalp
>Style with more glue, no not hair glue. Super glue
>Seal with hairspray and your ready for cosplay.

I wish I was making this up. I wish I was making this up so badly but I've seen every single one of these things done so often.
>>
>>10505787

I don't wanna shit on it too much because it's mostly minors who do it, so I'm just using this as an example of what I mean, but really, everyone just wants to make their wigs as unique as possible, and that's usually fine if it's like, an additional bow, or something like that that really feels like something the character would use and makes sense for the setting, but too many people go overboard and stick whatever they want, like this is supposed to be Madoka. It's also fucking hilarious, I don't remember the name right now, but the original "creator" of the glitter wig idea threw a fit over people doing it too, claiming they were taking something that expressed themself and that they put so much work into it that it made them want to quit cosplaying.
>>
>>10506862
>This is supposed to be Madoka
She could easily swap out the dress for Junko's costume, I'd believe it. Also the top lashes glued straight onto the skin below the bottom lashline will never not be funny to me.

Honestly I don't even think that one is actually that bad. They're just trying to express some rough emotions and projecting it on Madoka, who did go through some pretty rough shit.

the shameless, unhinged fandomism of homestucks is exactly what leads to this, i have no clue how deep you had to reach into your ass to land on SJWs as the source.

Nayrt but tumblr style sjw have for years now been screaming about how there’s no wrong way to cosplay and all cosplays are valid. When kids who know nothing about cosplay enter the scene and see that message everywhere, it leads to shit like that madoka

currently yes. When it was popular in it's prime though the cosplay community of Homestuck had constant tutorials to help each other out and actually look good. Genderswap is done wrong a good 75% of the time because it's usually skimpy or add a beard, or they completely change the outfit from looking like the original character instead of changing pants to a skirt or simple stuff like that to gender bend it. AU ones are horrible 90% of the time, biker Sailor Moon groups were old after the first group did it. No one needs to do a coffee shop au outfit for ____ series, it's not cute or well thought out.
Cosplay is supposed to be fun, not "I'm working out why dad doesn't talk to me and mom won't look at me while in a costume" You dress up to have fun. Not deal with your mental illness.
