Nostalgia time! Cosplay and event photos from the 00's (2000-2009). Stories are welcome too. I miss the time where was cosplay.com very active and no social media and instagram cancer like today.
>no responseIs this board is already full with zoomers?Yeah, oldfag here. The mid-end 00s was my best cosplay and event time.
That decade was shit. I remember normie mocking cosplayer constantly. Let's leave it and move on
>>10346412yes, this board is mostly zoomers. also mostly lolitas.
I have really old con photos but none from the 2000's era.
vivi from sakuracon in seattle
I'm cringing and disappointed at how bad my photography was.In 2007, my friend accidentally cosplayed L from Death Note and somehow did better than most people.
I have lots of pics I saved from early 2000 or so that I didn't take myself, but from cons I've attended. I'll dump some of my faves. I was so young and enamored with people's skill back then. I still am, but I think it's incredible what a lot of people could do without YouTube tutorials left and right. I liked to plan my con lineups in my signature on the cosplay.com forums, and read other people's too to get hyped for who to look for. I'm so sad it just isn't the same anymore.
>>10345160Here's a pretty good vid compilation vid talking to cosplayers of 2004:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5f9x_ddD-uU
>>10357563also lol at the guy lugging a huge selfie camcorder
>>10359827Its funny cause thats also the time when cons were adult events and some nudity was allowed.
not my pic and technically 90s but this is one of my favorite older cosply pictures. to me there's something so nice about these, people just dressing up for the sake of fun.
>>10359719Not op but id say anything underneath 2010
AND NOT A SINGLE MAN-FAYE PHOTO!? WHAT THE HELL IS THIS!?
>>10345160I love conventions during the early 2000s. There's just some sort of nice energy they radiate despite how crappy the 2000s kinda were.
>>10365004Thats because this was still a subculture thing and it wasn't infested by the mainstream.
>>10365009there u go. It feels really gross and corporate now.
>>10365011Absoultely. Back when i was going to cons in the early to mid 00's I always felt like that the Subculture would actually overtake the mainstream. That feeling stopped for me by the later part of the decade. Now look at where we are...
>>10365014BTW who else is an oldfag here thats pushing or in their 30's or older? I'm curious now...
>>1036501635 hereWhere's my senior discount?
>>10365089I am 31...
>>10365435pic also very related because thats how i feel about the old days now...
>>10365016Just turned 41 last week.
>>10364993this is one of the best cosplay photos I have ever seen
Old fag here. Early 2000s was my favorite time for conventions. I was lucky I went to them when they were full of genuine fans of anime and japanese pop culture. Our cosplays may not have been amazeballs like they are now, but there was so much heart in it. Here are some nostalgia photos for you.
>>1036501631 here. My last con was last summer and was shit. I only started cons in 2008 but those first few years were such fun, and while /cgl/ has always talked shit, the cosplayers cared a lot less with how perfect their stuff was if they were there for fun.I don't have a lot of pics, but I do have my old ass cosplay videosyoutube.com/watch?v=1H2oKi6QQA0
There was always the obligatory DDR pad cosplay
Occasionally there would be a giant mech that would blow our minds all away with how large it was.
Yaya pre-boob job
Tiffany Grant used to cosplay the character she voiced
Also early 2000s "Visual Kei" cosplay was a thing
And I'm ending with some Eva.
>>10366958here's another DDR cosplay! devil-zukin.
>>10367020and one more, jet set radio
>>10366955Even with as bad as it is I still find it incredibly endearing.
>>10366956god bless. this is pure and wholesomeReminds me of the second con i went to back in '09; me and my sis watched a game of cosplay duck-duck goose in the outdoor park of the con grounds and we saw and L and Light do a mock-fight as funny shenanigans. Everyone was laughing and having a good time until a security guard barked at them and broke the group upI think it was the same year there was a Caramelldansen flash mob lined up against a wall in the Dealers' Room too
>>10367023Nice! I've seen only two JSR cosplayers since I started going to cons in 2013. The character designs are perfect for costumes; it's a shame the series is so slept on.I'm too young to have lived through anything like what's in in this thread. I'm not so naive to say that I'd trade my convention experience for yours; there are positives and negatives to both. But I enjoy seeing and reading your memories. Thanks for taking a few minutes out of your day to share snapshots of your life with strangers. You may not think it's a big deal, and in the bigger picture, it's not. But it's still special, and I hope these threads always have a place here.
>>10367023Fuck that feels good to see anon. Legit highlight of my day
>>10364993this 100% would be what anthy would look like IRL
please im actually a fan
>>10367862This was my 2nd con actually I'm the Rune Knight (green hair) and the Naruto actually ended up becoming one of my close friends but not through the conventions, then when I was going through these years later I realized it and we both laughed our butts off over it.
>>10368496oh my goooooood that's adorable!
>>10367023in-fucking-credible. So cool.
>>10365001Because over a decade later I'm still trying to forget.
>>10345160>Just hit 30>Went to local cons every year from 2005-2010>20's was filled to the brim with work, existential crisis, loss, and more loss>Realize this year will be the last year I can go to a con without being the dirty 30>Corona virus guarantees final year of con-going to be non-existent>See this threadIt's all so tiresome.
>>10370141They're not the same at all anon. Unless you have a group of friends to go with the chances of fun are really low. Women are quick to use cosplay is not consent shit even if you're just trying to talk to them (seen first hand) and the amount of aspie dudes is even higher and they don't know when you're trying to end a conversation ever. Have legit had to walk away from people because they're not getting it.Only go if you're a con drinker and can find parties after dark. The amount of emotionally stunted 20yr olds crying and causing drama is stupidly high.Again though these are Sac Anime observations and it is a shit con.
>>10370171>Women are quick to use cosplay is not consent shit even if you're just trying to talk to them>just trying to talk to themI used to be very open and friendly with guys at cons but dude I dont think you realize how many creepers, horny dudes trying to get a quickie or otherwise super off-putting guys there are at cons after women. Those retards ruined it for all of you. And honestly in my experience there's only what I would call one "normal" guy for every 5 creepers that bother you, so yeah ofc women are gonna be flighty at cons. We ain't their looking for dick anyway, we're there to hang out with friends, shop and wear cosplays with said friends.I feel like that's kind've a misunderstanding between male and female congoers, or at least younger ones.
>>10370171Men are never "just trying to talk" to attractive women.
>>10370322female too my dude. It's not even at just guys. I've seen girls freak out on other girls for simply complimenting their bead work on a dress where it was across the chest "my eyes are up here!". Tumblr children have ruined cosplay at cons basically.
>>10370322young girl congoers are annoying though. someone yelled at my bf for "violating her personal space" in an event where we were all told to link arms.
>>1036501633 here but people can not believe I am that old. On the last event they said I look 10 years younger. Back then I was really a legal shota. I am now glad I look like a typical 20's guy and no longer the such underage appearance.
>>10371097dude, stop larping
>>10370542world heritage image
>>10370542God this fuckin picIs... is that lube below the paddles
>>10365001I remember taking a photo w/ Mansty in 2009 or 2010. Wish I still had it.
Oh man, I want this to keep going. I need to see if I can find any old photos of cons from 2005 that I have.
>>10370141> 32, been going to AX since 2006> 20's was directionless and filled with depression> Took too long to graduate and feel it was a waste of time> Never been to other cons while favorite series were still fresh> Why are we still here? Just to suffer?I wish I could get a do over.
>>10364993I'm in love
>>10366964I wish vk cosplay would come back but the popularity is as good as dead in the US
For me the cosplay community was much better without facebook, instagram and tiktok cancer. I miss the good old cosplay.com days.
>>10351325You probably didn't know, anon, but I had this picture you just posted saved on my computer for ages until I finally managed to finish my Ovelia costume! Thanks for taking it!
>>10370141Right down to the fucking Spades Slick reaction image you got me Anon.
even though the cosplaying was awful and more for fun i wish i was born in the order generation (i say this because i wouldnt want to be any younger when i got into cosplaying which is 18 in 2015, im currently 23). I hate seeing all these cosplayers trying to get famous and sexualizing everything. And the worst thing is when people assume you have a tiktok just because you cosplay
>>10375524same here anon, it saddens me i got into cosplaying when all this started to blow up
>>10377659I was 18 in 2005 and did the first time a hard and more complex cosplay. Feels weird you was a little child back then or in general all the zoomers are not born or babies. lol>And the worst thing is when people assume you have a tiktok just because you cosplayI am too old for this tiktok shit. I don't understand this site. Why this is so dumb and cringe? Srsly!
>>10345160I can't beat airman
>>10370542Now i understand
>>10375524I miss cosplay.com
>>10385989Me too, what happened to it
>>1036501629 here. I actually really miss cons between 2005-2010, nowadays is just about the appearance and not anymore about having fun.
>>10385997Pretty sure it still around.
>>10346426I'd rather be mocked than have todays watered down e-fame bullshit.
>>10386494In every hobby and fandom there seems to be those ones who feel a ton of guilt over their hobby, and the way they combat it is either hoping or working towards it becoming mainstream and accepted. Some kind of "I'm not a weirdo any more if everyone likes it" logic. And then they attack anyone who feels the opposite, who want the hobby to be "our" thing as gatekeepers and the like.
>>10386490It is but all the forums are locked an dit looks like they deleted a bunch of threads
>>10386548Yeah that’s quite unfortunate
>>10386515thats actually a pretty astute observation, but I will suggest a correctionyes there are gatekeeper types, but the purist types are not always overlapping with gatekeeper types.and the gatekeepers can be broken down further into custodian/scholarly types, and administrative/control types.
>>10385997The site is pretty dead or more in a coma state.>>10386494Oh, yes! This! Instagram is the best example for the e-fame bullshit. I don't like this site. Sadly most cosplayers these days use this site.
I miss Guilty Gear and Ragnarok cosplayers, if anyone have good photos of either franchises I will really appreciate it, anything's fine really
>>10346426You have to be 18 or older to post here
Me on the left
I've been going through archived old geocities sites from the 90s-early 2000s lately and it really makes me miss a simpler time. I think this happens when you get older regardless of who you are or what kind of life/hobby you're talking about, things just felt so much less complex when you were younger and the internet wasn't so fast-paced and all-consuming.I wish I still had friends my age who wanted to just dress up and have fun. But anyway I'll stop whining like the grumpy old man I'm becoming and just post some pics.
>>10402766Oh yeah, some of these are probably from the 90s rather than early 2000s but I didn't make notes.
And this is much earlier than the 00s, but I thought they were interesting to see - pics from AWA 1995. Wild to compare this to what cons are like nowadays.
>>10366960AHHH THATS YAYA HAN! nice find
>>10402787Make your own thread. 00s only. 2000-2009.
I kinda miss the slightly crappy very homemade looking costumes looking back. (t. rose tinted lenses) because these days you can get far superior costumes off the rack (or commissioned if you have the money), and maybe that's part of why cosplayers seem much more pretty than when I was in my prime, they have so much more time to think about makeup... and their filters.
>>10366961she looked MUCH better this way
