With all the re-releases going on, what are the status dresses? Cat's Tea Party has been knocked out of the Holy Trinity, Honey Cake and Silent Moon re-releases on the way, what can we still be selfish assholes with? >what are the current biggest status pieces >do you expect status dress prices to drop or rise over time >what do you think the next status piece will be Feel free to share any rare/status piece coords in this thread.
>>10187581>Cat's Tea Party has been knocked out of the Holy Trinity>posts CTP anyway
The better question is, what leads an item to becoming a status piece?
>>10187584Hey, it was up there at one point. Still part of the discussion, still worth looking at.
>>10187585Being on a limited release or otherwise difficult to find, on top of being highly coveted. The status pieces we've had over the years don't exactly have anything in common beyond this so I personally can't really pinpoint it to something like a specific design choice.
>>10187585I feel like a lot of the status pieces of today were flops when they come out and tastes just gradually changed until more people wanted them. Maybe they were just ahead of their time and it took people to warm up? That and just low numbers.
>>10187585Sometimes being part of a trend is what makes a status piece. Sugary Carnivak used to be *the* status piece but the OTT wave is over, it’s worth nothing now
>>10187597That and Milky Planet as well. They both used to be my dream dresses and desu I'm glad they aren't as popular anymore... If I decide to snag one just for nostalgia it wont cost me too much
>>10187627I think a lot of old Moitie pieces would qualify
>>10187636And older Imai Kira prints like this and Twinkle Mermaid
>>10187639Carnival in the limited pink x sax or pink x black colors
>>10187627This one is so underappreciated. There were very few in each colourway, and they almost never come up for sale. The ones that do are the same 4 or so that keep changing hands. And all the white ones are probably in collector's hands
>>10187642I think if anything were to truly replace CTP it would probably be La Princesse Sucre. It’s so pretty and I hate that I missed out on it. It rarely pop up for sale too
>>10187641A month ago the white one sold for 80k on Tokyo Alice. But I honestly think the majority of rare dresses aren't even that rare, they all just got bought by collectors, never to be seen or worn again.
>>10187651And that’s about all my photos saved on my phone. I might dump what I have on my laptop later tonight when I get home>>10187641I agree I love this print so much I’d kill for a MTO if this more than any other
Wish Me Mell Tea Time probably counts.
>>10187653Shit, I missed it!? I would have paid more than that for it. And in this case, the dress really is that rare. Only 10—20 were made in each colourway.
>>10187656>>10187651>>10187649>>10187647Don't get me wrong, it's hella cute. I do t really see why you think it could replace CTP though? Would you mind explaining a bit more?
what PC color is considered as more status-y, red or black? I like red OP better anyways tho :P
>>10187719Would take pink tho. Anyways I wouldn't wear the red rarity out of fear to ruin it, especially when you're really limited on washing it.
>>10187721You wouldn't be washing it anyway, it's velvet.
>>10187722people say it's okay to wash the top part. real circus comes when one will try to keep the skirt part out of the tube.
>>10187660Not that anon but probably because it another limited AP x Imai Kira release, which similar to CTP, the mto flew under the radar so there aren’t many of them out there. I agree it’s quite gorgeous. I’d love to get ahold of the pink OP or sax jsk.
>>10187627So what is the actual going rate for this dress? All the records are all over the place and desu I’d take it in any color, preference for pink.
>>10187627what dress is this?
>>10187582does anyone have the pic of this where the dress says "Bampire"? it cracks me up every time
>>10187579Some reasons;Puppet Circus because AP has said repeatedly that they will not ever do the detailed metallic printing again on velvet, it’s too difficult and expensive. I’m not sure why they don’t do the PC print as a MTO in another printing style though and new colorways since it’s such a popular and desired print. Iron Gate because they actually lost the print file, or it was corrupted so it no longer actually exists. Even if it was recreated, it would likely have some small differences.
>>10187722You don't wash velvet?I handwash my pieces with cold water and special soap. They're still in great condition. I wouldn't advise to wash on the machine, though.
>>10187828I don't own any velvet but I was under the impression that washing it would ruin the fabric.
>>10187828Puppet Circus OP in red, pink or black requires a special type of dry cleaning because it is very saturated colors of dye on cotton velvet with a metallic print transfer and then white cotton cuffs and bodice/collar. Believe me, those of us who one one have had to face this. It’s pretty much the lolita drycleaning nightmare.
is there a statut piece specific to each brand ? My knowelge of legendary piece is so bad.
Robe vert clair is iconic to me, I always think of it as a status piece.
>>10187766it's sold by a scalper who bought it for 22k yen but here you go: https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/e351040155
>>10187819Yeah, I spoke to some Moitie staff at an event and she confirmed that their files of Iron Gate all got lost/corrupted.
>>10187850Thanks, I’d go for it but with the alterations it’d be way too big for me.
>>10187834I love this dress. It's gorgeous.
>>10187832But the ivory OP is okay to hand wash?
>>10187832Oh, I see. The ones in velvet I own either don't have a print or are embroidered, so I guess that might be the difference.
>>10187875Tbh, I'm a little selfishly happy about this. Yeah, yeah, you should buy lolita for yourself and to wear it because you like it, not because it's rare, but that's part of the joy for me. I like having things not a lot of people have. I've noticed a lot of people getting salty about others being proud about having an original release, and I just wonder, why do they care? If it's a dress you wanted, it shouldn't matter what others think, and if it's a dress you dgaf about, the same is true.
>>10187797this is not a status piece
>>10187956Same, especially since original vs later release matters in other collector's hobbies. If there are people who buy lolita to collect it, then I think it's reasonable that they get excited about having the first release.
>>10187972>especially since original vs later release matters in other collector's hobbies.I don't understand why this is such a controversial statement. I've seen people get heated over calling it a collector's hobby. It may not be figure collecting, where they're meant to be displayed but never touched, but it's silly to think a good chunk of lolitas don't consider this hobby to be more than just wearing dresses. I think I've seen this mentality more among newer lolitas, the ones that buy and sell pieces without a second thought. I'm not against newer lolitas, but I think they don't really have that kind of collector mentality that a lot of oldfags do. It probably doesn't help that the material used in a lot of newer dresses is obviously not nearly as high quality as the older stuff. >not to say that all new lolitas are like this, ofc
>>10187956They aren't getting salty about it, they ridicule said people because it comes off as pathetic and desperate.
>>10187998All the "collectors" I know wear lolita once a month max, if at all. Idk, I just really hate the thought of lolita as a 100% consumerist hobby. Having the courage to actually wear the fashion on a regular basis needs a certain attitude and dedication and is not the same as just mindlessly buying items because they are rare and hoarding them in your closet. And I disagree with you, newer lolitas are pretty much introduced to that collector mentality thanks to social media and its demonstrative nature and the like system.
>>10187926Unsure, due to the metallic print on velvet. I would not trust it to stay adhered. But there is no color to run so id probably chance hand washing the top half then hang upside down to dry.
>>10187815The mid-print was not this dress, it was on Cembalo.
>>10188066oh, thanks for letting me know!
>>10187960Idk, it's somewhat hard to come by and pretty iconic.
>>10188111Iconic yeah, not really hard to come by in comparison to everything else ITT (or other old school pieces). It's just expensive now
>>10187627i never knew this dress came in black and now i want it so badlyi feel like i just found a dream that ill never own
>>10188022>pathetic and desperate How?
>>10188064That’s exactly what I was thinking about doing.
>>10187579Since AP's a cheapo nowadays, Puppet Circus will never be rereleased so that I guess
I'd say that celestial has become a status piece.
>>10191240Really? Why? Everyone and their moms have one
I always considered this colorway of Carnival to be a status piece, at least in sweet lolita terms.
>>10191240How if it isn’t rare? That’s like saying HL is a status piece
>>10191244It isn't as much of a rarity thing, rather, a popularity thing. It sells like hotcakes for more than retail price.
>>10191261There are tons of unsold listings on LM though... it’s like saying Holy Lantern or Misty Sky are status pieces
>>10191150NAYRT but it’s just something kind of insignificant. If owning a piece of clothing released before other identical pieces of clothing makes you feel “proud” it just makes it sound like you don’t have a lot going on for you.
>>10191318Isn’t it just like with rereleases of stamps and figures? I’d be happy if I had the original too.
I find it weird that we don't really consider things like expensive anniversary sets to be "status pieces" even though they're way more rare and expensive than this other shit resells for.
>>10191318Owning an original is like owning a piece of history. There's a reason why original paintings sell for far more than copies. People are just drawn to originals for sentimental value and that's how it's always been.
>>10191150Because it sounds like they're trying to cope with their dress not being a status piece anymore and the fact that they overpaid for it just to have something to still feel superior over. No one cares that the CTP you're wearing is the first release. >>10191456This is entirely your own perspective anon. Lolita is a fashion, not paintings or figures. No one is going to pay 1k for your Holy Lantern just because it was the first release.
>>10191471No one said anything about demanding higher prices for an original if its the same cut/fabric as a re-release. They're talking about personal sentimental value. That's not a "cope", that's a common experience for a lot of people who own originals. But yeah if they're getting braggy about it, I agree that's stupid.
>>10191456It's made by the same company. So the analogy is more apt to a first print of a book than an "original painting"
>>10187583Which color and cut is best of the best though? Red OP? >>10187582Ditto for this one, and I’m guessing it’s not the OP in any color. Black x blue jsk?
>>10199337Iron Gate OP is far more expensive, rare, and sought after than the JSK. I think black/blue first, then black/white, but they’re so close that they’d likely switch which is more so based on who is looking at the time.
>>10199337The cut that fits more ppl is higher priced in both examples. So jsk of puppet circus and op of iron gate.
>>10187638>tfw one of my dream dresses>tfw too tall and wide to ever fit in comfortably
>>10187832DO NOT DRY CLEAN SCREEN PRINT HOLY FUCK.
>>10191454I think it's weird too.Also, Honey Cake isn't a status piece... it's an "I sold out" piece.
>>10187632Milky Planet was thought after? I was new back than but I don't remember it beeing so famous
>>10191454because they're usually pretty ugly
>>10201949milky planet was huge back in the day. it was never iron gate or puppet circus tier because it wasn't really "rare" it was just "popular" and so secondhand demand was high and people could get away with charging $5-600 resale. once the OTT sweet trend waned, so did milky planet>>10201946>Honey Cake isn't a status piece the bag is though, it's an iconic, high-demand-low-resale item, regardless of your personal taste
>>10191456comparing mass produced dress to original painting, that's it anon you're an idiot.
I think that the volks x ATTP Marionette in My Closet collab is a status piece. The bjd white dress, the other black OP cape set, and the marionette in my closet jsks always go for a high price and are rarely found second hand.
>>10202379They are very pretty dresses and I highly doubt these will ever be re-released or be in a MTO
>>10202380They got re-released. That's how I got mine, I missed the original MTO due to being a broke ass. the individual pieces of the Marionette print itself is still gettable, you can usually tell who's new by who's blinking at the pricing for its pieces. However, the BJD versions of ginger tea doll might as well be status pieces, I've found milk tea set but not ginger tea, that one seems to have disappeared into the void.
>>10202379They made a skirt in all the colorways too but I rarely see it either.
>>10191456The original was not a unique ooak piece though. It is usually the print and often a certain cut that people are after and in the case of some, if there is a difference, sometimes the second one is actually better, just like many are saying they like the new fabric better on the re-release of Honey Cake. In the case of an identical re-release, there is literally no special difference to cause the older one to be ‘more valuable’ in fact, older fabric and a dress that has potentially been worn a lot more is LESS desirable.
>>10187627Is that a dude, dude?
>>10212480Holy hell you're new
>>10187640Its surprisingly easy to find this in black x pink. There's like 3 active listings right now.
>>10187627Are there any close up photos of the embroidery on this dress? I would like to do something similar on a solid dress (but my own flower and arrangement, not copying this one, ofc) so I would like to see the stitching better.
Aside from the horrible and infamous alteration of CTP, are there any other photos of rare or status pieces altered? Any stories for better or worse? Is altering one of the rarer pieces more frowned upon or if done well would it actually increase the value if it fit more people but was obviously altered?
>>10220118I don't think altering a rare piece would ever increase the value, regardless of how well it's done
>>10220114I have it, I’ll take some pics for you when I get home tonight and post them here
>>10220118I just bought rose ribbon embroidery and the previous owner altered it. I would never have done it but now that someone else has already done it I can enjoy wearing it and not feel bad knowing I destroyed a collectible dress. In fact since it was already altered I got it altered again to fit me perfectly and I’m sooooo happy.
>>10220118>>10220160What about the Iron Gate skirts that Mana signed at Sakura-con? That's technically altering it, even if it's just on the lining. That would probably increase the resale value?
>>10220160I don’t think altering something really would ever increase the value but I’m wondering if it would decrease the value so badly if a rare piece was professionally altered? My dream dress still doesn’t fit right at my normal weight because my shoulders are too wide. I’ll probably never sell it anyway unless I leave lolita so I’m thinking of just giving in and getting it altered. Thing I’m most dreading is even though I’d get it professionally done, if it’s noticed, I’d be bummed if people talked smack about me for altering a rare piece like they did Tif who got so much shit over altering her CTP. I’m probably over-reacting though and many people have probably already discreetly done this with many rare pieces and it’s simply not all that noticible if it’s well done.
>>10220199Thanks so much, anon! Embroidery accent on solid pieces is such a pretty thing and I really would love to use the same or similar embroidery technique to do one for myself. Close-up photo of the top and under-side of the embroidery please?
>>10220247Just sell it to somebody who fits it.
>>10220254Nope, but I figured someone would say this, since we are posting here. I’ll just suck it up and get it altered. As long as it’s clear to see that I’m not doing it because I’m fat, I should hopefully just be able to shrug off any potential criticism.
>>10220247It's your dress, you're free to do with it what you want.
>>10187579is AP's Chandelier Print still considered a status piece?
>>10220247People hate on Tif for that alteration because she's a cow *and* it was altered very badly *and* because it used two dresses for that hideous alteration. I think invisible from a distance alterations are fine.
>>10220247Tif got shit talked because her dress was altered badly. If you love your dream dress and want to wear it, I don't see any reason not to alter it. Anyone who's salty about that can just suck it
>>10220320How the hell did she get 2 CTP to mash together when they were rare then? Are you sure?
>>10187638What is this one called?
>>10220451Wow, I love the lace motifs, both of them.
its such a shame brands rarely make appliqué pieces
>>10220118Altering will always decrease the value but I honestly prefer people who alter their rare dresses or dream dresses over people who buy them, never or barely wear them but never sell them either.
>>10220250Sorry I took so long, I was really tired last night
>>10220483Black x pink version would suit this larme trend tho. Too bad they don’t make cutesy themed things despite the demand. Look at the latter release, everything is in stock but Milky Bear backpacks.
>>10220655Thank you so much for these photos, anon. The roses are done differently than the stitch I was taught and I was right in my guess on the stem stitch and also about the technique used on the middle of the leaf stitch so it's really great to see all these details up close!
