Otakon 2019 is coing up fast. Let's all start posting our favorite personal memories from any previous Otakon!!!
I miss the 35mm theater!
The smoking areas overlooking the streets of Baltimore were such good hangouts.
>>10166903Yeah they were. I met someone out there one year that had a hookah rolling. Good times
Yeah Baltimore is a shithole city, but you have to admit the Convention Center was pretty comfy
My favorite memory of Otakon 2013Thank you to the glorious bastards who did this
Seeing this cosplay my first Otakon/convention was mind blowing. I was like holy shit, hot women dress up as Final Fantasy characters?
>>10166907Is that the dance line?
>>10166914Sure looks like it may have been. Lololol.
>>10166910This is amazing!
>>10166915Do you remember when it was in that small hall way.
back when I was a broke young weeb in high school Otakon was a Big Deal. After Big Apple Anime Fest collapsed in 2003 I was finally able to make it down to Baltimore the following year. I don't really watch anime anymore, but I still go every year. I think we've all got some real nostalgia for Baltimore, but let's be honest, DC is better in every way except maybe for price. This shit right here was the fucking worst.
>>10166916Looking back, 2013 was a pretty kino year for Otakon.
>>1016704303,05,09,13 probably my favorite otas all time.
Anyone remember the rainstorm in 2017?This is water literally flowing out of a light
>>10167045This was nothing compared to 2001 with the exploding manholes >>10167044Would add 1996 and 2001
Guess what opened this weekend?https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2019/05/apple-carnegie-library-opens-saturday-in-washington-dc/
>>10167334I miss that fountain, I heard they demolished it at some point after otakon left
>>10167385They did it's all flat with alittle bit of green space
>>10167385Normally not a fan of Brutalism, but those fountains were pretty kino
>>10167400I think the walkway is also gone now
>>10167251Looks nice. I'll try to swing back in the next few weeks to see how much of it is open to the public.https://9to5mac.com/2019/05/09/apple-store-carnegie-library-dc-photos/
>>10167530Wonder of this guy will be backTFW no Ice Cold Water guy
Otakon Vegas was great. Shame it was never substainable without the original Otakon as it's financial life support.
BOYCOTT OTAKON 2019. We can put it out of business in one year. They already embezzled all their savings. Destroy the Ota Cartel. In the ashes of Otakon, a new con will emerge to fill the void. Supply and Demand.Pass up one Otakon and we can have something better. Let's worry about the future. We can all accept a Katsu or Magfest trip instead this coming year and wait for Otakons spiritual successor afterwards. The corruption is too deep in Otakon Staff and won't let go. Since almost the entire staff doesn't vote or get involved beyond the con weekend, the cartel has no opposition. We have a choice. Bail them out with attendance and let them carry on or destroy them swiftly here and now.
>>10168485What the fuck is this shit? I already bought my badge and have a hotel. Frankly I don't care about whatever you're on about, but don't you think you should start this at least a year in advance?
>>10168485Get this trash outta here
>>10168589The truth hurt? It's time to stop the abuse of power. Down with the old regime.
>>10168598Down with pussy bitches who hide behind anon post. Lol. Noone is worried about a shit troll.
>>10168649SMD troll. None cares about you protesting my knowledge. Otakorps failures are public record. Only the lazy would yield to your weak retorts. About the hiding behind a screen. I'd be happy to obliterate you if you're part of the corrupt voting staff cartel.
>>10168674Otakon is my favorite convention of all time. What are you even talking about.
>>10168485Fuck off cumdumpster.
>>10168721Awww. Lol. So mad that you're getting sexist! Do we want to go there? You could try being ethical and doing what's best for the con.
>>10168747A male can be a cumdumpster too :3c~
>>10168769Yeah so is your momma!
Otakorp as a non-profit organization has issues, big whoop, so does the NRA.Otakon, on the other hand, is a hell of a convention and a very well-run showAlso, there is already a thread for haters>>10106684
>>10167044Otakon 2013 was the last and final edition of Mystery Anime Theatre 3000
>>10168799That was such an awesome event.
>>10168798Yes, that's right you tell that fuck. Otakon is the best.
>>10168802It was indeed. I was one of the writers
>>10168804Bring it back as a panel! I'd be front row!
>>10168805The guy with the 'bots is still on-staff, the guys who provide the voices (one of which was the actual director and head writer) left after that Otakon.I was kinda happy with the reviews because they almost always referenced my lines
>>10166909Ew my ex bitch is there in that pic
>>10166909>>10166910I was there for that and took a spoopy pic too
>>10169246Still think this is awesome
>>10169252The Baltimore Convention Center era of Otakon is going to become legendary over time.RIP Burke's. Its a CVS now
>>10169989That being said...where are the good places to eat in ChinaBlock?
>>10168054>ice cold wota>and its only one dollagod i miss baltimore
Otakon's gonna be my first con, I'm going because of the Nujabes tribute show on Friday What exactly am I in for ?
>>10170004A good effin show!
>>10169995We had the Ice Cold Water guy at one of the opening ceremonies, he was quite a hit.The ice cold water guys in DC, they just don't have the same enthusiasm, or the body. He's on twitter as @IceColdWaterr but it looks like he doesn't post much>>10170004>>10170024This, this, a thousand times this. Will say it as many times as I have to. A lot of the corporate angst and drama is damn near invisible to the attendees. Instead, they see the 800+ staffers who do a pretty good job running "the show" and trying to give the best experience.Protip: Best close dining options are the food trucks along 17th street, followed by the Japanese-themed food court near the entrance to Artist Alley (because its nearly hidden, staffers jokingly call it "Narnia")
>>10170187Would you say going to the con on the final day is worth it ?I'm a europoor so I was thinking of going to the con on Fri+Sat and then just fucking around DC on Sunday before leaving on Monday, but I see it's just a $5 difference between a Fri+Sat pass and a full weekend one
>>10170594Yeah. Still lots to do Sunday!
>>10170594Heck yeah spend the extra 4.47 EUR! Thats a 10% discount from the American price.Otakon goes out of its way to put on concerts on Sunday just so people get some value, and the Dealer's Room closes at 3. I think they kind of run everyone out after 5PM. But with a full three more hours of daylight after that, you can knock around DC as well.Going to stay in the hostel?
>>10170862Where's the hostel at ? Help me pls I'm a newfag
Otakon is always a great place to fuck other guys girlfriends. Looking forward to another fun year of leaving my splooge in some girls mouth or cunt and sending her back to her man.
>>10171242There are tons of them. Try google
>>10170187Walk two blocks to Chinatown and get real cheap Asian food not the overpriced crap from “Narnia”
Saw this on /pol/ and it reminded me of a story from my early staffing days>Con ops>older woman comes in, wants to speak to someone in charge>okay, whats the problem?>theres a guy, he's dressed as a Nazi>oooooookay.jpg>Is he screaming?>Well, no but...>Is it giving the Sieg Heil salute?>Uhm, no but...>Is he bothering anybody?>No, he's just sitting there watching videos, but he's DRESSED AS A NAZI>(pause)>You know ma'am, we have something in this country called the First Amendment...
>>10171785Narnia had some decent food for the price. But in general, whoever holds the catering contract for the convention center is going to assrape the attendees. Unfortunately thats how it works. That said, what are your recommendations?
>>10172383It really bums me out that I love this series but can't cosplay it without attracting the most shit.Should I never cosplay villain characters?
>>10168104>Otakon Vegas was great. Shame it was never substainable without the original Otakon as it's financial life support.Otakon Vegas really messed up the entire convention budget, though. Vegas would have been axed several years ago, except there were long-term contracts would have made it even more expensive to quit early.
>>10166894why are cons so hard to hook up at/get laid at/do someone pretty? Why are all the pretty ones jailbait or taken and fucking some musclebound guy like living goku or whatever his name is?why are weebs/otaku and such *the only subculture/subgroup* with a LOWER than average # of women proportionately?
>>10175278I hate when people throw around the term "incel" to describe people they don't like. But seriously, dude....
Lets try re-railing this threadAnyone remember the "Plaza of Death"?
>>10176612Because of the sun! Omg. Do you remember when the pre reg line went that way
Best places to eat in the surrounding area? Especially those with fish or vegetarian options.
>>10176930Take a scooter up to H street there are tons of restaurants
>>10176930I'm fond of Cava myself, fast-casual Mediterranean in ChinatownThink that church across the street is going to serve lunch in their basement again?
>>10175278Because cons aren't for hookups, it's a giant nerdfest. Just jerk off, bro
>>10172462You can, just don't be obnoxious about it. I went to a con earlier this year with some people dressed as Millennium characters, we covered up when in public spaces and generally kept to ourselves, enjoying the con. We had no issues and there were plenty of people who where happy to take pictures with
>>10175278They aren't hard to hoom up at and there are many women. You are just a weak, whiny cuck.
Is Facebook the best place to find people who are offering rooms to share? I've used tumblr these past few years but have had no luck since the whole NSFW thing and everyone leaving.
>>10177348>Think that church across the street is going to serve lunch in their basement again?Whoa whoa what?
>>10181177That church across from the Marquis has a Soul Food lunch on weekends in their basement
>>10181317That actually sounds fresh as fuck
>>10177777no one even checked these quints! so sexy
Why isn't the 2019 Final Fantasy concert on the Otakon site? Conductor Roth is listed as a guest.
>>10183087Probably to build up hype and clickbait-ey shit, they've been teasing a third concert for a few weeks now
Is everyone booking for photoshoots right now?
>>10166949I miss the harbor, speak for yourself. I had so many fantastic photos out there, as a cosplayer.
>>10183388The Baltimore now is not the same. The fountain and sky walks have been demolished; Burkes is gone; California Tortilla is gone; Noodles & Company is gone--it's a soulless wasteland now.
>>10183715wtf cons have orgies? what is this shit?
>>10184498There was a 24 hour diner called the Upper Deck Bar and Grill that served god tier food after the rave ended. Now they're closed. In fact, somebody on here recommended that place as the go to cheap greasy spoon joint.
Outraged trash Matsuricon staffer is campaigning against Otakon. Petty fake shade to steal Otakon attendees while pretending it's for social justice. She is pretending Otakon won't let anyone wear and suit or dress by misrepresnting fashion terminology.
>>10185536As a transwoman sometimes I feel like I'm the only member of the trans community that isn't fucking triggered. Somebody tell this abomination to STFU and wear w/e
>>10185536Why do these cunts exist and why are they seemingly so prevalent in this community?Holy shit
>>10185639She just wants views and likes. Trying to hit the big time and too stupid to know she just burned a potential bridge towards it.
>>10185639Otakon staff had dress-up dinners for many years at their major planning meeting. I also think it was adopted for Otakon Vegas (great idea lab, not-so-great convention)
Going to Otakon first time. Hotel recommendations??
>>10188290Are you willing to fight trains
>>10188290>>10188292Metro closing those stations on the Yellow line is gonna kill some of the suburban optionn.Get as close as you can afford
>>10188290>>10188292>>10188527Hotels near Red/Green line stations are still good options. Try looking for hotels in Silver Spring and College Park.Worst case scenario, Hilltop Hostel is only $50 a night right now.
>mfw AXfags are seething over Otakon “taking” all of their guests
>>10188530+1 for Silver Spring, I work there. It's a few-block walk from the hotels to Metro station, but the county has a free circulator bus. It stops tight in front of the Courtyard by Marriott
>>10188290Check out some of the hotels on the DC Wharf. They're a 10 minute uber ride away. If you're feel up to it take a scooter or bikeshare to the convention center since both locations are on 7th street and is a is a straight shot to the con.
>>10189654Please no Uber, the streets are bad enough to navigate as it is!
This Otakon may be the last. Registration numbers are lower than this time last year. Otakon opened pre reg early as well. Remember all that talk of debt and shutting down? Otakon still hasn't had the strong year they need to get past it.TLRD: ATTEND OR WATCH IT DIE.
>>10190187Jesus, really? Guess I'll go buy my pass now... it was my first con so I'd hate to see it go
>>10190187Otakon has been relying on "spirit bombs"--surges in at-door registrations to take up the slack. The problem is advertising sucks rocks and they can't into Social Media
>>10191764More to the point, they are still adjusting to the new normal in DC. Used to go to cons in the region back in the day--Metro makes it more attractive for day trippers
>>1019018725 would be a good year to go out on desu
>>10190187People have been saying the current otakon is the last one ever since the dc move
>Otakon goes to shit immediately after Boatakon stopped being a thingCoincidence? Or was Boatakon the heroes that we deserved all along?
>>10183087They suck at marketing, nano was found out as a guest when the vip tickets was released for sale and when asked about it on Twitter, they basically said yup surprise! If they only market their events and guests better, people would pay attention but they strangely have quiet marketing and appears to not want people to attend
>>10172462Tanya did nothing wrong
>>10192516It's because they operate in propetual debt on the line between scraping by and bakruptsy. They haven't been able to get back in the green and roll the dice year by year.
>>10192638All Otakon has to do is advertise on the damn metro like Awesomecon has done. DC has plenty of nerds in the area so get to advertising for fucks sake.
>>10193247This has only really been since Otakon Las Vegas>>10193316The problem is Otakon has to book months if not years in advance to get signs into high-traffic stations. Also, Otakon has ZERO penetration into Northern Virginia, the just fucking ignore the region. May as well add that to the stack of reasons I am a soon-to-be-former staffer
ZUN as a guest when?
>>10195771Yes please but I cannot imagine this con making that happen
>>10195771>AWA got ZUNGoing by that single AWA I went to, Otakon is the better quality con honestly. Only thing AWA did better was the really impressive Touhou panel. The Touhou panel we get is always shit.
>>10195862Holy shit! How did AWA get him?
>>10195869I'm referring to the 2012(?) AWA. No clue how they got him, but it was his first time in America. AWA overall wasn't that amazing, so if they can get ZUN, I don't see why Otakon couldn't. It's a matter of if they even ask.
First time going to Otakon, let alone the east coast. Does the convention center's temperate stay pretty cool? Any site recommendations, besides the museums?
>>10196447Convention center is pretty temperate, yeah. All I can say is that tours are expensive.
>>10185536jfc people like this make me want to kill myself
>attend Otakon 2011 for first con. >be poor recent high school graduate. >subsist off nothing but cookies friend’s mom packed us and peanut butter sandwiches. >pack seven weaboo losers into a tiny Jeep plus baggage. >have no idea how to cosplay. >cosplay Kawabara with good will clothes; no one recognizes me. >spot cosplayers on 95 on the drive there, ohmygod fellow nerds. >spot progressively more cosplays on the walk to the convention center, excitement builds. >enter convention center. >foam at the mouth from sensory overload. >can’t go more than ten seconds without spotting something awesome. >spend way too much time playing Smash with randos. >learn about the significance of the wave painting. >learn how to actually put together cosplays. >enter dealers room, enter sensory overload again. >watch Ip Man in room packed with weaboos screaming and cheering at every punch. >watch anime’s craziest deaths in room packed with weaboos screaming and cheering at all the gore. >rave time back when it went ludicrously late. >phone is long dead>somehow remember what hotel room I’m in >wake weak willed friends who long ago hit the sack. >move shit to make floor space >knock wand thing friend bought at rave >light saber sounds and flashing neon lights fill the room at what is now 4 am>wake eight people because broke kids room packing >how do I turn this off?!?! >make more sounds fucking with it >bury it under pillow and pass the fuck out >wake up sat at 8am >knock back four coffees and cookies for breakfast >do it all again sat >never use vacation days for anything besides cons again
>>10171677Bro how do you tell that voice to stfu after you do the deed and leave? When I finish I end up feeling guilty and bad about my actions especially if the bf they have is mostly some scrawny dude or an asain nerdo who seems like they got that chick by luck or something. I tend to try and forget about it because god forbid I get one of these chicks knocked up and end up in a bad situation thats hella awkward
>>10195896Otakon got TMROtakon got L'Arc-en-cielOtakon never got Babymetal
>>10198954don't forget JAM Project
>>10171677Dude, how do you even get her away from the boyfriend in the first place? If he's leaving her alone for a prolonged period of time, that's on him. Or is it like a pokemon battle where you meet eyes and must fuck in some secluded corner of the con. I have a friend that just hooks up at cons. He brags about it, but the girls he hooks up with are fugly. Which, of course, he gets defensive about.
>>10199513>He brags about it, but the girls he hooks up with are fugly. Which, of course, he gets defensive about.Beauty is always a light switch away when you need a nut.
>>10199506Otakon also got Nana Kitade and Aya Hiranoand Yoshiki, TWICE But never Babymetal, not at their peak, not now
>>10197186I have pictures from that rave!(Technically, Otakon refers to it as a "dance" but to most normies, its a rave)
>>10198954>>10199506>>10200968Yoko Kanno as well.
What's your experience with wigs from EZ Cosplay? I'm debating the Abigail WIlliams wig but I'm not sure if it'll be shit.
>>10201410TWICE even!Missed the second appearance, I was told it moved the crowd to tears.gotta admit I kinda miss Baltimore, even with most of the cool stuff gone, it was still a great place to hang out.
>>10202204Getting in day 1 took forever. Or in some cases for those who came late, even longer. The bigger venue was really nice. But yeah, there's a lot of memories I have of Baltimore. Might be fun to just go back for the hell of it.
Schedule is out!https://hiroko.otakon.com/events_schedule.asp
>>10202859>Rune Factory panel>why is this here>'people were excited over RF5 announcement'>WHAT>sure enough, it got announcedWhat a way to find out about a game I've been wanting but gave up hope on.
>>10202260This is the last year for BronyCon. They have a ComiCon but its tiny Maybe wander around after an Orioles or Ravens game
>>10202859Is the GuideBook app version available yet?
>>10203086FUCK GUIDEBOOK. THE EVENTS SCHEDULE IS UP WEEKS EARLY IN AN EASILY CLICKABLE LINK RIGHT NOW.
>>10203086Not yet. Their Twitter says it will go out in a few days.
>>10203180It's out. I've literally read it.https://hiroko.otakon.com/events_schedule.asp
>>10203206That's not the Guidebook App, smartass.
>>10203144Fuck the clunky tiny ass website schedule, I want the Guidebook one. I can read each event at a glance with the app and then add it to my own schedule in the app and it tells me what overlaps. It also gets updated in real time.
This Nujabes tribute concert better be fucking worth it
>>10203605What tribute concert is ever worth it? Never be as great as with the original singer. Better not be a hologram of Nujubes
>>10189999quads of truth, everyone avoid uber at all costs. also im debating between doing a genderswapped Rey or Morrigan (dragon age).
>>10198954>>10199506>>10200968>>10201410>>10203605>>10203772Apparently Anime Expo is getting the Aqours from Love Live this year. The only truly notable performer Otakon has managed to get is Yoko Kanno and that only happens once in a blue moon...I wish they'd get Perfume, Band-Maid or Baby Metal but I guess they're too inept to do that
>>10203605Wait there is a tribute concert for Seba Jun? Holy shit!
>>10202859>>10203206Has anyone here been to one of those swing lesson panels? Sounds like fun
>>10203989Honestly if Otakon had the nuts, they would ride the wave of citypop and try to get Mariya Takeuchi to play at the con. Could you imaging if Otakon got Mrs. "Plastic Love" to come to the US as an Otakon exclusive? Double bonus if her husband Tatsuro Yamashita came with her to perform.I know we got staffers shitposting here so make that suggestion for them to come for Ota 2020.
>>10201482you’ll get exactly whats shown, no more no less. I dont purchase alot of premade cosplays, but I read alot of reviews, youtube, reviews on IG.
I've been to Otakon a couple times, but this is the first time I'm going in cosplay! Very excited! I might be going over my head picking two cosplays.
>>10204748Two is absolutely doable, there's people out there that bring 5 - 6 doing AM/PM cosplays. i believe in u gull
>>10204409I recently rediscovered City Pop, and you totally hit on something. This would bring a wave of nostalgia in for the oldfags who remember Commodore Amiga-based fansubs; while at the same time catching the revival to bring in new fans.I'm a soon-to-be-former staffer, so can't help you out sempai
>>10204767For the people who don't know City Pophttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYeQn73QiQ4&list=RDT7O7d1qdYGM&index=4
>>10204767>>10204770In a perfect world, Otakon's theme for bringing a in City Pop artist (or several) would be to have the entire con go full tilt into the 1980s Japan Aesthetic. Hell, you know how in youtube comments for city pop vids you will see someone say "I wish I was in a Japanese club in the '80s when this song came on" Do that theme for the dance. Replace the "rave" with '80s Japanese music, invite some Vaporwave artists to DJ it. To go even further with the "Bubble Era" theme, put the call out to host a mini car show for 80s-90s JDM cars. This area has plenty of weebs with nice JDM rides.
>>10204824Your ideas are intriguing to me, and I wish to subscribe to your newsletterListening to this right nowhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVhvH_fmPs0&list=RDT7O7d1qdYGM&index=2I would TOTALLY come back on staff if we did this. Was thinking ANRI would make an amazing musical guest as well
>>10204824 You know how you pay a $500K for a venue and you build it and then you have to sell the venue? And you never know when you have to turn a profit, you always have to make some extra money to keep the facility going. This means this is going to be difficult financially as well as emotionally and I am still unsure where we're going to be. I mean fuck dude
>>10204836A lot of these 80s pop Idols were shocked and surprised that they even have fans in the US. Another artist that would be cool to bring over is Miho Nakayama.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWHgmX2hn_ohttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crHB7le-weM
>>10204836>ANRIDon't get my hopes up anon. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GImIZ41IL0k
I wonder how many would be willing to fly to DC for a weekend to perform.City Pop is a much better theme than whatever the staff voted on for next year.
>>10204894Get Yubin over here to perform as well. Sure she's Kpop but look at thishttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MiQonPvlVM
>>10203989passcode would be dream tier.Babymetal already has promoters with normal US venues so they wouldn't take the lower payout a con gives, versus some band who'd never get much traction, even for a two city tour.
Babymetal is on the trailing edge of popular now, ne?Should've had them 5-10 years ago
What're y'all bringing to this year's Ota? I'm bringing Shuichi Saihara and Pit.
>>10206248Not sure if I am going at all, will find out tomorrow
watch out for the photographer Alemm1
Panic meeting time
>>10206947Nice. We should hang brah
>>10206931Stopped by the Apple Store during a lunch break, they had no freakin' clue Otakon was coming. At least &Pizza knows and remembered.
>>10206622He always seemed like a faggot but why the fuck did this retard keep hanging with him after all that?
What are the badge pick up hours, and how bad are the lines?
Otakon was my first time attending any kind of convention. Had a blast. The funniest thing I remember is this Tamamo's boyfriend (right) getting up and being defensive when I jokingly offered to buy her quartz.
>>10208272Forgot my pic.
>>10208187Sometime Thursday afternoon, and lines are not all that bad since the DC move
>>10201482Anything that’s on EZCosplay you can find on AliExpress for loads cheaper.
Im going to cosplay for the first time at Otakon, I've never been looking forward to a con this much before. Is the experience any different going into cosplayed and cosplayless?
>>10209094who as, anon?
>>10209130Akihiko from persona 3 on friday, and ffxiv Samurai on saturday!
>>10208274her cosplay is shit
>>10209094AbsolutelyPeople are much more open to talking to you and vice versa if you approach others.
I've enjoyed every Otakon for the past three years that I've been going, but I always feel like I miss out once it ends. I always make sure to visit the panels, arcade, and artist's and dealer's rooms. It's probably because I always go by myself and never talk to anyone. How do I go about making friends?
>>10206622>refers to actual humans as 'a random loli' and 'famous cosplayer'she seems autistic
>>10209329Talk to cosplayers from whatever you're cosplaying. Or hang out with 4chan people. That's how I've made my con friends.
>>10209307feel free to say hi if you see me around, I'll be walking around with another persona cosplayer.
Is there going to be a meetup this year? If so, where and when?
>>10209094If it's half way decent or clever, you're gonna be exhausted from taking pictures, but it's really nice to see some people's face light up when they spot you. As someone else said too, you'll probably end up meeting a ton of people cause cosplay is a great conversation starter. I always find Otakon to have great friendly attendees, so make lots of friends :) >>10209329Check the FB, discord, etc for meetups. Go play games in the game room with randos. Ask people about their cosplays. Invite peeps to join you for drinks or lunch/dinner.
>>10206248Aw man, makes me want to wear my Palutena this year
>>10166894>Let's all start posting our favorite personal memories from any previous Otakon!!!I've been going to Otakon since 2005. I still remember the last 4chan panel with moot and snacks in attendance. The line for the panel took up most of the top floor, and was comprised of probably at least 500 retarded wailing banshees regurgitating their favorite memes as loudly as possible. There were staffers using megaphones to direct the line and they occasionally used a button on the megaphone to make a long beeping sound. Everyone in the unruly crowd started mimicking the sound, hundreds of people beeping back each time. "fuck yeah, Seaking!" was the flavor of the month meme then, and it could be heard echoing throughout the entire convention center that night. The panel itself wasn't memorable... They showed that one super old 4chan flash animation and did a Q&A or something, while the crowd of screaming manchildren in attendance continued to spew out a steady stream of memes to try and get a laugh from their fellow audience. After the panel concluded the energy was still high and the convention center was shutting down for the night. so moot, snacks, and probably 100-200 others (myself included) congregated outside on the sidewalk by the main registration doors and had some impromptu after party. I distinctly remember that at one point, a staffer in a full fursuit came out of the main doors, and they were immediately mobbed by some retards screaming "kill it with fire" who thought it would be lulzworthy. I didn't see it, but apparently someone then kicked the furry in the jewels. The energy almost immediately died down as most sensible people realized that others were starting to go too far... And everyone started to disperse. Police started to show up at some point too. I don't know for sure but I'm about 90% certain that incident was why 4chan panels were banned from otakon afterwards.
>>10209747I both hate and miss the total anarchy of Otakons passed.
>>10166894>Let's all start posting our favorite personal memories from any previous Otakon!!!Same poster as above. While the 4chan panel and the ensuing chaos was definitely one of my most prominent early memories of otakon, it's dwarfed by the most significant moment in my life. At Otakon 2012, in the karaoke room, I met the most amazing girl. We liked a lot of the same songs, sang some Duets, and went to the concerts together. My favorite memory is of us both singing various anime songs in the street while walking back to her hotel at night. I had never felt such a close connection to someone. I moved to the west coast that year, but kept going to otakon each year just to see her. Eventually we got together and are now married! We have tried to make it to Otakon every year since, but are missing it this year due to expenses.
>>10209775Hey AnonFuck you Happy for you but AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
>>10209747Are you me?Otakon is the only anime convention I still attend. My first anime con was BAAF 2001, which was total shit, but that was back when the anime boom was cranking up and I was a full-on weeaboo so I tried to go to every con my broke teen ass could manage in the NYC area. For the weeb crew I ran with Otakon was the fabled 'best' and I finally managed to get there in 2004, when I was 17. I had to miss 2005 because of college but I've been every year since. Those early years were kinda rough- the first year we were six to a room at the Radisson (which I think was the Wyndham back then) and I was wedged between the entertainment center and the wall with no blanket, and didn't sleep a wink the first night. I still remember the crushing depression I used to get when I got home, but as I developed a routine and made better con friends it got better and better. Unfortunately one of my best buds and one of the few I could count on to go every year passed away shortly after Otakon 2009, but my regular group today includes a guy I met through him, so it's not all bad.Miss you, Ray.

I’m older with half way decent income now, so we don’t have to pack rooms quiet so much, but when we did it was all friend and there were some of the best worst time’s I’ve had. I’ve only been going since 2011, how was it prior to that? Has it changed a lot?
>>10210138Yeah a lot of this hits home for me. I started at Nekocon in Hampton Roads around 2001 or so when it used to just be inside a small hotel. I went with a small group of friends and started to go to more conventions, driving further away each time. I had a shitty McJob and mostly funded the con trips with that and writing articles for gaming sites on the side. Pay was 5 an hour and articles were only worth 5-10 bucks a pop, so I was still broke as shit. It was usually enough to get by though if I tried not to spend on "luxuries". Most of the time I wouldn't even get a hotel and would sleep in the car. In retrospect I'm lucky I wasn't carjacked or stabbed, since most of the conventions nearby were in shit holes like Richmond and D.C. My best friend and I eventually made it to Otakon in 2005, also hearing it was the biggest and best. We stayed in a motel about 10 minutes away in a sketchy area of town, and took the light rail into Baltimore to save money on parking. We were completely blown away by the size of it at the time and had no shortage of things to do. We kept going to Otakon each year thereafter, and would experiment with going to other random conventions at other times of the year. Definitely remember those times fondly, even though I was a dumb weeb fuck (and probably still am)
>>10210166It's gotten more crowded and more, I guess I'd say, predictable? I blame the internet, in this case- when I started there was a lot less information available about certain things, so you'd always encounter something new and exciting, and you never knew what you'd find in the dealers' room since it was all the comic book stores in driving distance emptying all the 'japanimation' crap they'd had in their backrooms since 1986. It's all gotten a lot more accessible since then which is great in some ways but it also means everything's homogenized and you get clout-chasing nonsense and all the dealers' tables are the same, and ten thousand kids cosplaying whatever the flavor of the month is (fuck thank god it's not homestuck anymore, grey greasepaint everywhere.)>>10210170I don't think I ever had it that bad, but man am I glad I'm not a broke fuck anymore. I remember back in those days I always tried to book the cheapest hotel in the official list (never managed a reso at the days inn) but once I hit on the Holiday Inn I did alright. I don't make a lot of money now (white-collar, but I work for a nonprofit) but I can afford to stay wherever I want. I had been booking the Marriott now that it's in DC, but I got fucked by the server errors when hotels went live so this year I'm at the Courtyard. I wish there were more at-con events that catered to older fans. I've never tried that Hiro's Lounge thing, but I poked my head in once and it looked sad as fuck.

Interesting, this is partially why I don’t really give too much thought to dealers’ rooms. I see people lining up before it’s even open, but all I can think is 90% of the stuff is probably sold some where online. On that same note, I do enjoy the artist alley cause you can run across some neat stuff you didn’t even know existed. The flavor of the month cosplay is so real though. My friends and I are probably becoming old guard at this point cause we hardly every cosplay anything relevant hahaha.
>>10208794Well the Abi wig was normal price $45 but on sale for $18 so I think I'll be ok
>>10210166>I’m older with half way decent income now, so we don’t have to pack rooms quiet so muchFunny enough, this is why con rooms are selling out so fast now. The broke college kids of 2007 now have money and good jobs now.
>tfw my first year was last year and I went for free since my friends have worked security for the dance parties for yearsI don't think they're doing it this year but I want to go again a lot and it'll suck if I have to pay for the 3-day pass and hotel, but last year it was the first time in my 25 years of life that I saw so many like-minded people and I almost cried realizing how many years I wasted not going to consFunny enough my best time was at the manga library, I introduced a normalfag friend of mine to yotsuba and he loved it. I just wish I talked to more people.
Does anyone know if they allow photography inside that library (well apple store now I guess)? Also what are the go to photoshoot spots?
>>10210178The dealer's room lost a lot of its appeal to me when I started using Toreba and realized a good chunk of it was just UFO catcher and kuji prizes. I still try to go in for that one booth that mostly sells 20+ year old mecha and toku toys
>>10209772Oh, are you talking 2001 when the city exploded? The move to DC meant going from everything being dialed-in to learning to do everything over.
>>10210178It was my idea to bring kimono dealers to Otakon, they did great in the early days. Still not sure how I feel about sword/airsoft dealers, even with the hoops buyers have to go through, they must make enough to keep coming back.Does Jabba the Cube still have tables?
>>10211358Apple store didn't even know Otakon was coming. Not a lot of space when you first go in, may have to ask to look around the place.Outside is a lot nicer throughthere is always that church
>>10212884I bought a yukata last year, fucking love that thing. It's perfect to wear around the house in the summer.
>>10213931I've lucked into yukatas at thrift stores before, but for most folks the kimono dealers at-con are the only place for a good selection.Wish the Apple Store would allow Otakon to have a Matsuri there, so they could bring back the yukata contest
>>10210138>I still remember the crushing depression I used to get when I got home, but as I developed a routine and made better con friends it got better and better. How do you deal with that? It still hits me hard.
If you see a male Abigail Williams walking around with this, say hello. This took forever to make but it was worth it
>>10204767Who’s the qt with a blue tail?
>>10204886https://youtu.be/o2uNvPqRUGgAnri was fucking lit live in the 80sIf only I had a time machine
>>10214077In all seriousness, giving yourself other things to look forward to. At one point I was so starved for fun and geek social interaction that my entire year was orbiting around Otakon, but I started taking several small non-con vacations a year and it's made my life a lot easier- I try to never be more than three or four months from some kind of trip.
Why is Otakon the same month as AX? Will there even be anything left over to buy?
>>10215571>Why is Otakon the same month as AX?It was when the convention center was available>Will there even be anything left over to buy?Yes, you will be getting the East Coast dealers in there mostly.
Does Otacon usually have a lot of group cosplay photoshoots? There's a space for them listed on the schedule but none are posted
>>10216297They don't post them for a while. They'll be out in like, the next week or so.
My narcissist cosplay whore exfriend is gonna be there and if she sees me she'll prob go full autist at me for ghosting her for being a psycho bitch. I can't wait.
>>10217108It's a big convention center, just keep your head on a swivel
Does anyone have advice when rooming with strangers? I've searched them up and they seem like good people, but is there anything else I should ask or look out for? I really don't want to get ripped off or ghosted.
>>10217225Maybe don't do it?
>>10217147>It's a big convention centerWish it was bigger. Ran into a guy I roomed with one time who was horrid. Told him we weren't going this year when he asked, and ended up running into him. Fun times.
>>10217301Lying is never the answer anon
>>10217314>lyingHe wasn't a friend. He was a shitty person. You cut those types of people out of your life. Something that a lot of people seem to not know to do and instead try to 'fix' people.
>>10217318I meant you should just tell shitty people upfront to fuck off forever instead of lyingIt feels great
>>10217320Oh, don't get me wrong. It's fun in person. I was not the one in contact with him initially though, thus not the one to tell him off. And if it was, it would have been over text.
yo so on a whim i entered the amv contest for this con, half thinking i'd be disqualified, and turns out i'm actually a fucking finalist.i live in los angeles, but i've got some nice healthy expendable income, so i'm vaguely interested in going i dunno. i'll look thru the thread more tomorrow i guess but is this shit actually worth attending.>tl;dr amv finalist in la, should i go
>>10218758The con is great but as an AMV finalist there really won't be much of anything different for you specifically. The contest voting consists of sitting in a room for 2 hours as they play the ~40 or so AMVs and people write on cards indicating their favorites. You may get a kick out of hearing other peoples opinions though
>>10218758What's the amv, anon?
>>10218833this sounds dull apart from appealing to my deeply unhealthy narcissism. as long as one person says it was adequately ok i can get my rocks off.>>10219463i never intended it as an "amv" per se, just as a music video to accompany a dumb mashup i made that i still like. but somebody in the comments suggested i submit for a contest and i was like fuck it why not.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9UanTCFKKg
>>10219663Holy shit I actually love it, great job on this one
>>10218758Can you get a cheap flight from LAX to IAD or DCA?Know anyone willing to put you in their room?Conversely, are you willing to stay in far-flung hotel in the Otakon Room block, or one in the sticks close to a MetroRail station? Also, reminder Otakon has gender-neutral restrooms
>>10220237Everywhere in DC does nowadays
>>10220237>planning on sleeping in my car to save money so I can go all three dayssomeone convince me it's gonna be fun and good
>>10220328Uhm, where do you plan to park it where you won't be messed with?I have a suggestion if'n you don't mind taking Metro
>>10220373Uhhhhhhh hadn't really planned that specifically. Figured a parking garage would probably work fine
>>10220328how are you going to shower everyday?
>>10219663I think Jables would accept Instrumentality, but Cage would talk him out of it. Great job.
>>10220328Imma be real with you, not a great idea. Better off finding a room w like 8 people and sleeping in the closet. There is a reason car parks here are not 24 hr and the metro closes at midnight
>>10220389If you don't mind taking the Metro, there is plenty of parking in Silver Spring MD; in particular Garage 58 (where NOAA has its main offices), there should be spaces way in the bottom even on Friday.Just take the Red Line to Gallery Place/ChinatownOr you can check out this website to find inexpensive hotels. https://hotelsneardcmetro.com/
Wanted to add there is NO Yellow Line service south of the Pentagon station, so bad luck for the cheap rooms in Alexandria
>>10221317I can't speak for the yellow line but I know that in place of the closed blue line stops they have free shuttles to the Pentagon.
>>10204313Yeah they're fun, you also get to know the people who'll be dancing in the lounge later so it's easier/less awkward to find a partner.
>>10221358Its a different room than last year, where Gopher Ops was the first two years.
Wonder if these guys will be back. A vintage pachinko parlor would be kinda cool
>>10206248>>10206947is danganronpa still a big deal?
>>10222557The cosplay scene is still thriving despite the fact that the series ended
