aka I wanted to wait until someone else made the thread to ask my dumb question but nobody else did so I hope I did this right.
>>
Anyways, my dumb question starter:

I decided to finally cut my hair from butt-length to something that won't be so heavy on my head, but now I'm looking for lifestyle / classic lolita wig suggestions since I don't have my long brown Asian hair for lolita anymore. Amazon would be nice so I can get them quick for upcoming events but otherwise I can figure my way around Aliexpress and Taobao if I know the shop names.
>>
Why are headbows called "KC"? What does KC stand for?
>>
The old thread didn’t even have 100 replies yet. But I guess it’s good this one has a title.
>>
>>10144693
Oh no, I didn't even realize cause I was scouring through titles. I even double-checked too...

Maybe some other dumbasses like me will appreciate it?
>>
>>10144691
first google result
KC is short for katyusha which is just an accessory (usually a bow) on a headband. It’s not used very often since most people usually just say headbow or Alice band.
>>
>>10144687
How short is your hair now that you need a wig? Lolita can be very cute with short hair too.

So I'm in the market for a serger machine.
I currently already have a fairly nice sewing machine that has served me well for making halloween costumes, but I want to upgrade and start making some more durable everyday stuff.
What should I be looking for when buying a serger? Any features I should look for? Also how much should I be looking to spend on one?

Would it be bad to wear pic related (navy) with a black blouse?
>>
>>10144960
No, but it depends on your other accessories as to whether or not it'll look good.
>>
>>10144965
Why?
>>
>>10144966
I mean, if you use pink accessories, for example, it's going to look unbalanced and trashy. If you wear a black blouse, wide socks might not look good. So if you're going with a dark scheme like that you might wanna stick to dark navy/black accessories too.
>>
>>10144966
Not that anon, but the reason people often say navy and black don't go together is that it can tend to look like you were trying to go for all black/all navy and missed that they are actually different shades. Specifically this is the case with menswear - a man wearing a black blazer and navy pants will just look like he grabbed the wrong pants for the blazer. If you balance the black and navy evenly throughout the coord it will look intentional, and then it's fine.
>>
>>10144943
Just look up reviews anon.
This one has a nice chart.

I really like my Juki-MO644D, it's worked really well for me. I was looking for something that would do a rollled hem and that I could switch between 3 and 4 threads. But check out reviews, it's the easiest way to find what you're looking for.

I bought pic related to use as a wendy themed coord and any ideas on what kind of purse I should get?
And should I get a wig or just braid my hair to get the point across.
I don't want it to be a cosplay. But this dress was too perfect for a wendy outfit to not use it as such.

Good god. The amount of sour cunts in this thread. Who cares if someone makes a meme coord?

Is EGL just a longer name for lolita or is it a distinct style?
>>
>>10146110
You sound most sour lol. Leave cunts out of it, they're delicious.
>>
>>10146112
It means Elegant Gothic Lolita and it comes from Mana who uses it for Moi-meme-Moitie. But a lot of American and European lolitas use EGL interchangeably with lolita, since the original livejournal comm about lolita fashion was also called egl. On top of that, the word lolita is blocked on a lot of social media searches because of pedophiles, so sweet and classic lolitas also use egl instead of lolita since egl isn't blocked anywhere. Even where lolita isn't blocked, it's better to tag your posts with egl fashion instead of lolita fashion to avoid a thousand porn bots following you. There are also a lot of comms who use EGL in their name instead of lolita because it looks better to normies who might look at which groups you're posting to.

I do need more accessories. I'm thinking of getting a sax blue ribbon and making hair ties from it.
But I'm kind of just hunting for ideas.
And I apologize for the shit quality of the socks. I couldn't find any better pics of the type of sock that I'm looking for. If I could find the Merry-Go-Round lace otks in red and white, that'd be preferable. I could get normie red and white striped otks but I kind of want them to have lace toppings to make it more of a coord than a cosplay.
I likely am just going to braid my real hair instead of a wig.

My dream dress is an older dress that I haven't seen shown up on the secondhand market for years. I found it for sale for a great deal in the colorway I want (which is the hardest colorway to find for sale) but the only problem is... it's the wrong JSK cut. Should I keep waiting for the right version to pop up or snatch this one up first?
>>
>>10146724

I would get it, especially if it's a good price.
Get it while you can, especially if you havent seen it.
>>
>>10146554
Do you use pins to keep berets on your head with these styles? Any time I try a beret on it looks like it will fall off with the slightest movement so I don’t buy it. Am I doing it wrong or is my head too big for berets?

AP and Baby's berets have small hair clips attached.

Can Holy Lantern (wine) be washed? Google gave me a result but it was a "cutsew" and I'm guessing if never releases had any improvement?
>>
>>10147034
Holy lantern has flocking so it MUST be dry cleaned or you risk the flocking getting rubbed off and destroying the print. I had another anon tell me to only go to a dry cleaner that doesn't use PERC in their cleaning solution but I don't know if that is required or not.
>>

Same with >>10147073, but I'll add it's a risk you should decide whether or not you want to take. I've seen it used to refer to "basic" lolita coords - Not casual, and not OTT either.
>>
>>10146313
Nobody uses it outside the group of people who are really into old-school afaik.
Old-school: really old lolita clothes styled like really old coords, not allowed to use newer items.
Traditional: more recent releases but have an old-school aesthetic.
Imo it's stupid and came from people obsessed with making up more rules and limit their own freedom and creativity for some reason.

>>
>>10148287
“Switching” refers to the bib on the bodice, outlined here
>>
>>10148287
>>10148310
I've seen it used to refer to any article of clothing where the material "switches" from one type to another. So if a jsk for instance has a bodice that's plain but a jacquard skirt, it can be called "switching" regardless of if it has a bib or not.

how would anons rate the quality of brands like leur getter, emily temple, and jane marple? i like many of their designs but its hard to justify their prices to myself when lolita is more intricate and the same price or cheaper.
>>
>>10148995
I own some jane marple and a lot of ETC. The quality is definitely comparable to "proper" lolita brands. I can see how you'd think it's not quite as detailed or over the top, but the prints are always stunning and the fabrics and trims are high quality as well, they're great for casual wear but also work with your lolita wardrobe. I love their cutsews, cardigans and sweaters n stuff. I have both printed cotton and chiffon skirts and I don't any difference between them and brand except for sometimes shorter length. Also, ETC and jane marple go for much less secondhand so that;s something to keep in mind, it can be either a pro or con depending on how you look at it.

I don't wear leur getter but it seems they have a more mature, minimalist vintage approach to the lolita silhouette, and while that might not be quite as eye catching as an OTT sweet print by AP, the detailing such as pintucks, pleats, and other construction factors justify the price to me. Especially when you compare it to new AP and it's flimsy chiffon sack dresses.

I had no luck on the cosplay help thread so I'll ask here, does anyone know what book this is from? >>10149005
Hmmm, this is a difficult one. I managed to find the listing for that work on Sakizo's website:

>シリコンスタジオ クロスレジェンド/カードイラスト(2012)

Looks like she did illustrations for a moba game called Cross Legend /クロスレジェンド? or xlegends. It might be something that was only shown within that moba community/higher ups but was never released to the general public? If it WAS in one of her artbooks, I reckon it might be from one of her 2009 ones. Perhaps Parfum de la Fascination?
>>
>>10149032
Wait, shit I'm a idiot. If it was done in 2012 why would it be in her 2009 artbook. Yikes me. But you have a general idea of that era now anon. Perhaps Art book 17 "Sakizo Art Works", according to the her website is the themed around her illustrations for work.

In my experience, Jane Marple has the best quality out of those three, which is reflected in their pricing. Emily Temple cute is second best even though they tend to be slightly cheaper than Leur Getter. Not saying Leur Getter is horrible, but I trust them less than ETC and JM. Maybe because LG is the newer brand they're less consistent. I should say I haven't bought anything from LG since 2017 though. ETC is very durable. JM too but sometimes they use (very nice) delicate fabric that you can't just throw in the washing machine like you would with ETC.

What really helped me was one of those cheapo tripods with a blue tooth remote for my phone.
I started with an Amazon Look which let me see the photos as I took them. This is kind of embarrassing but I took hundreds of photos one afternoon and tried to figure out what looked good. You don't need the Look, it just helped make it go faster. After that it was useless because the camera is crap.
Just do a bunch when you are alone and find your angles. Try to recreate poses like photos you like. Look at how your feet look in the photo. Try taking multiple photos, slightly moving your feet each time.
I didn't expect it but slight positioning of the feet really changed the whole effect!
You should be able to start seeing what looks better and practice getting to that pose.
If you are like me and not taking photos a lot it can feel embarrassing but no one will know. You will be a lot more confident!

https://lolibrary.org/items/ap-princess-long-petticoat-2016 <- can this be worn as an underskirt? Or is it only a petticoat for long skirts?
>>

it can be and is meant to be worn as an underskirt, petticoats as we know are referred as panniers in japanese while the word petticoat itself is for underskirts

I rarely see any sax, period. That colour just seems to be un-trendy right now. Lavender is in, brown is sorta in, navy is a has-been. Pink is always in (it's sweet lolita after all), and white is a basic staple colour since almost everything pastel AP ever made has white accents.

Sorry, didn't mean to say anything about your tits.

But check out this picture of a similarly cut jsk. It isn't meant to have much shape or anything.
Maybe the strap length isn't hitting you at a flattering spot if you are having problems.
Not that you shouldn't wear it, they are just dresses I see a lot of people struggle to wear because they have a lot of cut choices if you are built wrong for it starts to look odd.
>>
>>10150123
Just remembered: If it is one of those ETC dresses where the straps are buttoned on at the back you can add an extender. Sometimes when I wear a cardigan with my ETC I just loop an elastic through and hook the button. I am tall and it can help make the dress fall in a better spot.

are there any certain terms in japanese i should be using to find old school pieces?
>>
>>10150593
Searching for brands like Cornet will bring up more old school-friendly pieces, but generally speaking it mostly boils down to combing through listings and hoping for the best.
>>
>>10150596
thanks, that's what i assumed, but i figured i might as well ask anyway.
>>
>>10150564

Well navy is still somewhat trendy, there's still a bit of stuff being produced. It's just not quite like the deluge we had 3 years back when you could count on almost every release having a navy cw.

Sax is difficult, though. Might be a while before it comes back into style again.

They're a great place to start for someone who has no idea about posing, one that was especially useful for me was her tip about fixing double chin by pressing your tongue on the top of your mouth and moving your jaw forwards. And there is a reason these poses are so popular in our fashion: they're cute, reliable, and don't look edgy.

But yeah, I'd like to see a better posing guide so please link it if you have one

stupid question, new to lolita: when tying a rectangle headdress under your chin, should the ribbon be in front of or tucked behind your ears? The ribbon for the headdress I'm using is wide and looks kind of stupid tucked behind my ears, but if that's the right way to wear it, well...
>>
>>10151381
Honestly, no clue. When I wear them I normally tuck them behind my ears just so it feels a bit more secure on my head but they usually move or fall in front of my ears anyways. Kind of six to one, half a dozen to another type of deal.

Also depends on the type of hairstyle you have--if your hair is long enough to cover your ears then sure go for it, just section your hair properly. Otherwise tie in front if your ears are showing? Meh?

Possibly on the side, less lace (fabric doesn't have lace trim), possibly in larger varieties of fabrics.

So I'm a newb lolita and I really like the Haenuli Stained glass jsk and wanna buy it during the farewell preorder thing
The only problem is that I have around $500 budgeted for lolita stuff and currently only own 2 blouses, 2 tights, 1 jsk, 2 shoes and a plethora of accessories and getting that dress+shipping would leave me with only like $150/$175 to buy other shit
should I just buy secondhand stuff and essentials instead of getting a brand spanking new dress?
>>
>>10151934
If you email her the form she can do a payment plan if it helps budgeting.

Personally I found buying stuff second hand is only worth it if you want the item, don’t get something just because it’s cheap. As well you will never see her stuff sold direct from her again, so you may struggle to find it secondhand
>>
>>10151934
By "$500 budgeted for lolita stuff" do you mean budget for the next month, 6 months, ever, or what? If it's all you have for the forseeable future then I might stick to basics and secondhand things you really want. That being said, if you love the Haenuli piece enough to let it eat that much of your budget then go ahead and get it.
>>
>>10151953
It's my budget until mid july-ish, since that's when I start my summer job again. I'm currently in school and can't handle work and study at the same time due to illness, so that's what's left of the spending money I put aside from last summer
>>
>>10151968
Also- I should add that I can sew, so I can sew my own OPs and JSks and accessories and stuff so it's not like I'm soley dependent on what online shops have to offer
thank you for all your help!

Start before you get to the ironing stage, while they're damp from washing, gently yank them all straight so that they form less wrinkles from ironing. If you're using the dryer, no heat, and take it out while it's still a little damp and not fully dry so that you can still shape the fabric before it's fully dry.

For sleeves, you're supposed to use a tailor's ham, insert it into the sleeve and then iron right over it, the ham will keep the sleeve stuffed out so that you can iron each part. I don't have one, so I roll up some towels until they fit into the sleeves and then use that instead. Mostly you want to iron the middle so that it's wrinkle-free.

For any ruffles, instead of an iron, you can use a hair straightener as it's smaller (make sure it's clean and not gunky with hair product though).

If you hate ironing, switch to polyester, most of it is wrinkle-free (especially burando poly).
>>
>>10151456

The long and short of it is that Haenuli is closing shop, and while people may get bored of their pieces they also know there's no further supply of this dress. So if you wait to find it secondhand, it's possible you can't find anyone else willing to part with their dresses, or the price may go up since there's no further supply of it.

So basically, if this is your dream dress, it haunts you, and you know you definitely want to own it, then just buy it now instead of torturing yourself later.

If you think it's just a very pretty dress but it isn't your dream dress, feel free to wait. There's always another prettier dress around the corner, even if you never end up with Haenuli's version there's a handful of other stained glass prints by various other brands that you can buy instead.

If you have limited funds, you might want to take a look at the capsule thread and think about building a small, cohesive wardrobe where you can make a lot of coords out of as few pieces as possible, it's gonna save your more money in the long run rather than just picking up whatever is cheap but doesn't really match anything else in your wardrobe.

I'm struggling with the same thing, Anon. I'm currently leaning towards getting the dress since indie designs are harder to get on the secondhand market. If you decide you don't want it later down the road, I'm sure there will be someone who missed out who will want to buy it.
Actually, while we're on the topic, what colorway of St. Vitus do you gulls think is best? I can't decide which one I like better. I feel like the print blends best with the black but I've always found the white one to be very striking.
>>
>>10152334
Blackkk. It's the gothiest.

I pre-ordered the reprint of St Giles even though I already owned the first release because its going to be slightly better and my old one is worn. I think it's worth it too get the dress because it's not going to pop up again! It's likely to hold it's value if you decide to sell it

Anons who use Google Chrome, have you ever had issues with translate not working on Yahoo Japan Auctions? Every time I go to Y!J, it translates from Japanese to English for a split second and then right back to Japanese and then says the page is "translated". I've tried clearing my cache, deleting cookies, disabling browser extensions, everything. The only thing that works it straight up turning cookies off for the entire browser, but that shouldn't be the only solution.

ok so sometime last year I was browsing through violet blue on rakuten and I saw this old school hat which I thought was cute, but my dumb ass didn’t bookmark it and it had sold by the time I returned to the site a couple weeks later. It was really cheap too, like 500 yen or something. If you’ve been to violet blue before you know they’re shit with their images, it seems like they delete the pictures when the item is sold so I couldn’t find it again. I haven’t seen this hat since. I’m like 80% sure it’s from putumayo but I could be wrong. Trawling through early glbs and Japanese google images has led me to nothing so far, but I’m still looking. I don’t even need to buy it, I only want a photo or something. Even someone else’s recount of seeing this hat will do. Just want proof that this hat exists and I’m not hallucinating or anything, in that case I’ll just sew the hat myself

Are there any non-China based Taobao shopping agents?
It's a long story, but basically, it seems like all the payment gateways used by Chinese shopping services no longer offer services to my country.
